For those who want a memorable one-day trip to a neighboring country, I recommend the Thai-Lao border in Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. It's directly opposite Huay Xai town in Bokeo Province, Laos. Just a boat crossing the Mekong River will take you to explore Lao culture, traditional houses, and sample Lao cuisine. You'll need your Thai ID card and a border pass obtained at the Chiang Khong District Office. Then, you'll go through immigration procedures at the pier before taking another boat to the Lao side and completing the same immigration procedures. On the Lao side, there are shared taxis (songthaew) waiting for you. The border crossing is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Today, we'll try grilled fish and "Khao Pun" (homemade rice noodles), a traditional Lao dish passed down through generations. An airplane used during the French colonial era is also on display. Most importantly, situated on a high hill, the area offers stunning views of the Mekong River. Besides drinks, the cafe also serves a variety of baked goods and one-plate meals. What are Laotian weddings like? We were very lucky to encounter a friend of a friend's wedding during our travels in Pakse, Laos, and were invited to attend. Laotian weddings are very traditional and lively. The bride and groom wear gorgeous traditional costumes, with the bride's hair tied up in a high bun and adorned with gold and silver jewelry. They half-kneel in the center of the hall, facing a room full of flowers and an elder who presides over the ceremony. Behind them, the parents of the newlyweds also half-kneel, along with 20 or so relatives and friends who have come to bless the couple. I noticed that among the flowers there was a bundle of cash, probably around 50-60 thousand . I heard from a friend that it was a gift for the girl's parents to repay them for raising her. The host's ceremony is quite cumbersome. After reciting for a long time, the knot-tying ceremony begins. First, the bride and groom are tied together with white cotton thread, then their parents are tied together, and finally, each guest takes a white rope and ties it to the bride and groom's hands, with cash attached to the white rope, which is also a form of blessing. Huixay is a town in Laos and the capital of Bokeo Province, located on the left bank of the Mekong River in the northwestern part of the country, next to the border with Thailand. Fort Carnot is a massive fort in Huay Xai that was constructed during the French colonial period. It is situated on a gorgeous hillside next to the Governor of Bokeo's main office, and there are two massive towers on display here, which represent the main component of the fort that has survived. The fort had fallen into disrepair and had to close in recent years, but it has since reopened and been cleaned up, making it a worthwhile stop on a tour of Huay Xai.
