The park currently only has the Niuheliang Site 1 Goddess Temple (currently closed for maintenance), Niuheliang Site 2 (the location of the large iron frame, large canopy, and national heritage monument), and the Niuheliang Site Museum open to the public. Other previously open sites at Niuheliang are currently closed. The Niuheliang Site is located at the border of Lingyuan City and Jianping County, under the jurisdiction of Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. It belongs to the Hongshan Culture of the late Neolithic Age, dating back 5,500 to 5,000 years. The Niuheliang Site (core area) covers an area of approximately 8 square kilometers. There are 16 numbered site locations in total, with the four major key sites being the Goddess Temple, the Altar, the Cairn, and the Pyramid.

In 1981, archaeologists discovered many ancient artifacts at Niuheliang, including pottery, stone tools, and jade artifacts, all created by people during the Hongshan Culture period. Among these, pottery is one of the most representative artifacts at the Niuheliang site. Pottery is an important form of ancient Chinese craftsmanship, widely used in daily life and religious and ceremonial activities. A wide variety of pottery has been unearthed at the Niuheliang site, including pottery basins, pots, and bowls. These pottery pieces have unique shapes and exquisite decorations, holding high artistic and historical value. What is the Niuheliang National Archaeological Site Park like? Niuheliang is a mountain ridge located at the border of Jianping County and Lingyuan City, both under the jurisdiction of Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. Three hilly ridges, each about 10 kilometers long, run through the Nuluerhu Valley. It is named Niuheliang (meaning "Ox River Ridge") because the narrow Mangniu River meanders through it. The site contains a cluster of Hongshan Culture relics from the late Neolithic period, dating back approximately 5800 to 5000 years. These relics include temples, altars, and stone mounds, and have yielded precious artifacts such as sculptures, painted pottery, and jade objects. The Niuheliang Hongshan Culture site is of great significance in the history of Chinese archaeology. The discovery of a large altar, a goddess temple, stone mounds, and pyramid-like structures dating back approximately 5500 years pushed back the history of Chinese civilization by more than 1000 years, earning Niuheliang the title of "the new dawn of Eastern civilization." The altars, temples, and tombs of the Hongshan Culture represent the highest level of prehistoric culture known in northern China, pushing the study of the origins of Chinese civilization back from 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, and expanding the study of ancient Chinese history from the traditional Yellow River basin to the Xiliao River basin north of the Yanshan Mountains. The open areas of the Niuheliang National Archaeological Site Park include the Site 1 (Goddess Temple) Protection and Exhibition Hall, the Site 2 (Stone Mounds and Altar) Protection and Exhibition Hall, and the Niuheliang Site Museum. The Goddess Temple is the site where the clay goddess head, considered the "common ancestor of the Chinese nation," was unearthed. It is currently the earliest ancestral temple discovered in China, proving that the Hongshan people had developed from nature worship and totem worship to ancestor worship. The second floor of the exhibition hall offers a panoramic view of the Goddess Temple site. The Goddess Temple has been temporarily closed for construction since June 8, 2026, and is expected to reopen after October 1, 2026. Ancient Chinese people called raised mounds "zhong," and stone mounds are a type of Hongshan Culture burial site constructed of piled stones. According to expert research, the stone mounds at Niuheliang are the royal tombs of the Hongshan people more than 5,000 years ago. Each mound contains multiple tombs, categorized into three levels: a large central tomb, medium-sized stone-built tombs, and small stone-built tombs. The large central tomb represents the highest level, and the tomb owner possessed a regal bearing, indicating that the Hongshan people already had a primitive concept of hierarchy and social status. At the center of the stone mounds is a three-tiered circular altar, providing evidence of the ancient people's evolution from "sweeping the ground for sacrifices—building an altar—to worshipping the heavens at the circular mound." This reflects the Hongshan people's concept of heaven and earth worship and profoundly influenced the architectural form of altars and sacrificial rituals in later generations. The Goddess Temple is located atop the main ridge of Niuheliang, facing south. The altar is situated directly south of the Goddess Temple on a ridge lower than the main ridge, presenting a "north temple, south altar" layout and forming a north-south central axis. This may be the earliest rudimentary form of a central axis in China. The Niuheliang Site Museum mainly exhibits artifacts discovered during the Niuheliang archaeological excavation, including jade objects of various shapes such as goddess statues and jade pig-dragons. However, most of these are replicas, but since you're already there, you might as well take a look. Overall, it's definitely worth a visit. The entrance fee is 60 yuan, parking is 10 yuan per visit with no time limit, and the sightseeing bus is 20 yuan (I'll talk about how to save on the sightseeing bus ticket in the next post). Currently, the Goddess Temple is under construction and closed to the public. The museum is very generous, offering a discounted entrance fee of 50 yuan. I recommend it to anyone interested in history.

The Niuheliang Site is far from the city center, so renting a car is the best experience. For accommodation, prioritize the Shuangta District. It's close to Murong Street and the North Pagoda, making dining and shopping convenient. There are many hotel and homestay options with great value. 🗓 A Relaxed 3-Day Itinerary, No Rushing Day 1 | Fossil Exploration, Unlocking Billion-Year-Old Secrets 🦴 In the morning, visit the Bird Fossil National Geopark, Chaoyang's top attraction! In the evening, stroll along Murong Street, explore the ancient street, and see the North Pagoda. This ancient pagoda, which has survived five dynasties, houses the relics of Sakyamuni. The evening light makes it perfect for photos. Remember to book in advance via their official WeChat account; it is closed on Mondays. Return to the city in the afternoon and stop by Youshun Temple on the way. It's a quiet, ancient temple, perfect for a peaceful stroll. In the evening, head to Longshan Night Market to try local snacks and experience the vibrant atmosphere of this small city. Day 3 | Forest Bathing and Temple Blessings 🙏 Spend the day at Fenghuang Mountain, the ancestral home of Buddhism in Northeast China! The forest is dense, with cliff carvings, ancient pagodas, and temples scattered throughout. Climb to the top for a view of the Daling River; the autumn foliage is stunning. If you're not up for a long hike, you can take the scenic shuttle bus for an easy tour. 🍜 First, let's talk food. If you come to Chaoyang and don't try these, you're missing out big time. Chaoyang stewed sausage is a must-try. The sweet and sour sauce coating the potatoes and sausage is incredibly satisfying for just CNY 15 per person 😋. Kazuo lamb soup with baked flatbread is also soul food. The moment that milky white broth is poured, my spending perspective was shattered—I couldn't believe I could eat so well for so little. Lingyuan hanging oven flatbread is CNY 5 each and super flaky; Kazuo wantuo is CNY 10, and buckwheat geza is CNY 15. Eating my way through, I was stuffed for about CNY 130/day. Honestly, skip those flashy food streets on the main road. Duck into the alleys near the station instead. The barbecue skewers are thick, the heat is intense, and a CNY 10 grilled chicken rack will keep you busy for ages. That's the real local experience 🎯 🏨 Accommodation recommendations: Around Shuangta District/Beita Murong Street. I stayed at Lavande Hotel (Beita Murong Street Wanda branch). A room with a view of the Twin Pagodas was only around CNY 240. Murong Street and the North Pagoda are right downstairs, making it convenient to get anywhere 🏯. For those on a tighter budget, Home Inn Neo Wanda Plaza is available for CNY 160+. If you want to soak in a hot spring after climbing Fenghuang Mountain, Fenghuang International Hotel is CNY 300–500, featuring a new Chinese-style garden and hot springs—perfect for recharging after a tiring day. Truth be told: don't book those remote homestays that claim to have Fenghuang Mountain view rooms! Many are side views with windows angled toward the mountain peak. Isn't it better to stay in Shuangta District for just over CNY 200 mid-week? Prices can differ by half between weekdays and weekends, so booking on Trip.com two weeks in advance is safer ✅ 🏞️ Here's a 3-day itinerary that's varied and stress-free. Day 1 City walk: North Pagoda Museum (free, closed on Mondays!) + stroll around Murong Street + Youshun Temple (free). In the evening, take photos of the Twin Pagodas at sunset at South Pagoda Square, then take a walk along the Daling River. The night view is so beautiful you won't want to leave 🌃 Day 2 Fossils + Buddhist mountain: Morning at the Bird Fossil National Geopark, adult ticket CNY 85 (bookable on Trip.com). I chose Niuheliang. Seeing the 5,500-year-old Goddess Temple altar and touching the site where the jade pig dragon was unearthed really hits you in the heart with the power of ancient civilization 💓 💡 Hard-earned tips to save you some trouble. The North Pagoda Museum is closed on Mondays and also takes a break from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Don't blame me if you show up and it's closed ⚠️ There's no food inside the Bird Fossil Park! Bring your own water and snacks, or you'll suffer from hunger. The real fossils sold outside the scenic area are all fake—99% are replicas. Just look, don't buy 🚫 There are lots of mosquitoes on Fenghuang Mountain, so bring mosquito repellent. In September, the temperature difference between day and night in Chaoyang is large. Wear a short-sleeved shirt + sun protection clothing during the day, and add a light jacket at night, or you'll be freezing 🧥 I recommend chartering a car to and from the Bird Fossil Park; taking a taxi from the city isn't cost-effective. Chartering a car is about CNY 200 per day. Attractions in the city are concentrated, and a taxi ride usually won't exceed CNY 15 🚕 Drones are prohibited at the Hongshan site. Even if you bring one, you won't be able to fly it, so don't be silly like me and lug it all the way there 😅 For Warring States red agate on Murong Street, look for 'Yongchang Pavilion'. You can find raw stones starting from CNY 30, but don't be fooled by fakes. Coming to Chaoyang in September is a smart decision—it's not too hot or cold, there aren't many crowds, and tickets are cheap. My trip cost CNY 150 for tickets. Accommodation CNY 240/night. Food CNY 130/day. For a 3-day, 2-night trip, I spent just over CNY 600 and had a great time 💰. Booking tickets and hotels on Trip.com is cheaper than buying on-site, so go for it!

Research shows it was imported from the Roman Empire via the Silk Road across the steppes, a precious witness to cultural exchange between China and abroad during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. Celadon flying fish water container (Hall 18, Five Dynasties period): an outstanding example of Yaozhou kiln celadon, with a fresh and lively shape, a masterpiece among Five Dynasties ceramics. 💔 A little regret Several famous calligraphy and paintings I wanted to see this time were missing, including Ouyang Xun’s "Zhongni Mengdian Tie," Tang dynasty copy of Wang Xizhi’s "Wansui Tongtian Tie," and Song Huizong’s "Cursive Thousand Character Classic," all national treasures banned from leaving the country. Standing on the summit, you can see the Daling River winding around the city. The sunset stretches the tower’s shadow long, and wearing a light-colored dress for backlit silhouette shots is amazing 🕊️. Don’t miss the night view at Beita Square. The Liao Dynasty ancient tower lit up creates a great atmosphere. Use a wide-angle lens from below and have someone stand midway on the steps for a perfect social media grid shot. The National Bird Fossil Geopark has a bit of a Jurassic Park vibe. With the boardwalk and fossil wall as a backdrop, wearing a straw hat while walking gives off a lively energy 🦖. Also, the reeds by the Daling River are perfectly green in July. Visit half an hour before or after sunset when the water sparkles gold. The photo of sitting by the shore swinging your legs is one I could look at a hundred times 🌅. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls Chaoyang’s attractions are really spread out. The Niuhuliang Hongshan Culture Site is about an hour and a half from the city. If you don’t drive, book a day car rental on Trip.com in advance. Don’t trust the “30 yuan to get there” offers from guys outside the station—they take detours and waste time. The UV rays in July are stronger than expected. Don’t skimp on hats and sun sleeves. Phoenix Mountain has many steps, so wear shoes with soft soles or your knees will hate you on the way down 👟. The “specialty shops” on the few ancient-style streets near Beita have inflated prices. If you want to buy aged vinegar and red dates, just go to a local supermarket—it’s half the price. Also, the 4D theater inside the Bird Fossil Park is fine for kids but adults can skip it.
