Kashgar Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Kashgar Old Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The old city of Kashgar is not as good for strolling as imagined, but I would still visit if I come again
The off-season old city of Kashgar is somewhat bleak
Many shops are closed
It's deserted, and I couldn't feel the bustling scene of the old city.
If you just want to check in at popular spots and take cosplay photos, then traveling in the off-season would be a good time (⚠️Some popular spots are also closed in the off-season: such as the rooftop photos many people take). No need to wait, take as long as you want. We walked from the east city to the west city, and then walked back to the east city from the west city. Apart from the people living in the old city, there were hardly any tourists.
The old city of Kashgar is divided into east and west areas, separated by a main road
1⃣️【East Area】: Opening ceremony (one at 10:30 and 18:00 each), Sky Garden, TV tower internet celebrity spot, Corner Coffee, rooftop photos, Bazaar food street, etc. are all in the east area; the east area is relatively lively and larger
2⃣️【West Area】: Century-old teahouse, Rainbow Lane, Cloth Bag Box, Antique Street, Oil Painting Street are all here;
🌟There will be relatively fewer places to eat and stay in the off-season, but there is absolutely no need to worry. It is recommended to play for 2 days, one day in the east area and one day in the west area.
This time is just a meeting, and I will definitely experience the bustling old city of Kashgar when I go again in the peak season.

Sisters, it's really beautiful in Kashgar
Zebra Xinjiang Lake·Feng Villa, should be the best guesthouse in the old city of Kashgar. There are eight rooms, each with its own unique theme, the lighting and bedding are very thoughtful, especially the public area is decorated with great care, it is said to be the collection of the couple who run the place over the past eight years. A rooftop swimming pool, rarely seen in the border areas, has been built on the rooftop. You can sit on the ground surrounded by ethnic textiles, eat Uighur-style breakfast, and gaze at the Kunlun Tower, endless romance.

Shake off the inventory of October
The exotic style of the ancient city of Kashi has always attracted me
I set off directly before the weather got too cold
I arrived at the homestay in the afternoon and put my luggage in the room
I went straight to the rooftop
It satisfied all my imagination
Characteristic buildings, a lot of carpets, carefully arranged scenes
As a perfect start to this trip

Gaotai Ancient Homes Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The Soul of Kashgar Old Town - Gaotai Residential Area
Gaotai Residential Area is a Uyghur residential community built on a loess high cliff more than 40 meters high and over 800 meters long at the northeast end of the old town of Kashgar, Xinjiang. It has a history of 600 years and is a major landscape for displaying ancient Uyghur residential architecture and folk customs in Kashgar.
The soul of Kashgar Old Town lies in the old town, and the essence of the old town is the Gaotai Residential Area. The 'Gaotai Residential Area' only occupies one-tenth of the area of Kashgar's old town, yet it almost encompasses all the architectural styles of the old town. Gaotai Residential Area is a Uyghur residential community built on a loess high cliff more than 40 meters high and over 800 meters long at the northeast end of the old town of Kashgar, Xinjiang, with a history of 600 years. The characteristic residential buildings here are mostly made of earth and wood, and they are important physical evidence for studying the living customs and architectural features of ethnic minorities, as well as one of the mysterious colors of Kashgar Old Town.
The high cliff has existed for two thousand years, and more than a thousand years ago, Uyghur ancestors built houses and settled here. It is said that the famous Eastern Han generals Ban Chao and Geng Gong once left their footprints here. In the mid-9th century, during the Karakhanid Dynasty, the royal palace was built on the north side of this high cliff, and the current Gaotai Residential Area was built on the south cliff. Koziya Beyxi - in Uyghur, meaning 'high cliff pottery house', has developed over a thousand years of history, forming a unique residential architecture with hundreds of years of history on the high cliff.
The Uyghurs of Kashgar have been living here for generations, building their houses against the cliff. As the family population increases with each generation, they add another floor on top of their ancestors' houses. Generation after generation, houses connect to houses, floors to floors, layer upon layer. A single residential house is a family history of reproduction, livelihood, rise and fall, and the continuation of descendants. The Uyghurs have a strong sense of clan, and the core of their residential culture is the attachment to home and homeland, so many residential houses have been passed down through seven or eight generations. Some large residential compounds have as many as ten or twenty rooms, with several generations living together in one courtyard, truly embodying the concept of 'four generations under one roof'.
Here, you can see everywhere 'over-street houses', 'half-street houses', and 'suspended houses' built over the crossroads of alleys, which look like watchtowers or blockhouses standing in the alleys from a distance. These unplanned, randomly built houses upon houses, and houses outside houses, are arranged into deep, crisscrossing, winding, and undulating alleys of Kashgar's Gaotai Residential Area. Walking along any path inside the alley, you can see the large gates of residential courtyards built along the alley, opening against the outer wall, with each household right next to each other.
Gaotai Residential Area has a strong Uyghur architectural style, which has been influenced by Islamic culture under the unique environment and natural conditions of Kashgar, and has gradually formed over hundreds of years of historical evolution. Gaotai Residential Area is rugged, densely populated, with many alleys, crisscrossing in all directions. It is praised by tourists from home and abroad as the 'living folk museum of the Uyghur people' and represents the connotation and historical heritage of Kashgar, a famous historical and cultural city in China.

I really didn't go abroad! This is the Gaotai residential area in Kashgar
The bustling and noisy old city of Kashgar makes you want to be quiet?
Don't like commercialization and want to experience the beauty of ancient city architecture?
Then it's really better to cross the road to the Gaotai residential area on the opposite side.
Gaotai residential area is a newly rebuilt attraction, admission is free but reservation is needed, there are few tourists inside, but the architecture is really distinctive, brick carvings and wood carvings are gorgeous and exquisite, full of Western Region style.
The meaning of Gaotai residential area in Uighur language is the clay pottery people on the cliff, inside are houses connected to houses, buildings connected to buildings, layer upon layer of layout. The labyrinthine alleys and unique house architecture together constitute the residential spectacle, which is the only labyrinthine city with Uighur characteristics in China.
After entering, you will find that a residential area has several exits, different exits correspond to different alleys, which is quite interesting.
Want to avoid the crowd to take pictures, this place is really good.

Xinjiang | The Panlong Ancient Trail
Having walked all the detours today, from now on life is a smooth journey.
1️⃣Location: Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County, Kashgar, Xinjiang - The Panlong Ancient Trail
2️⃣Transportation: It is recommended to drive yourself to truly experience the winding mountain roads.
Go up to the viewing platform to witness the astonishing 'Panlong Ancient Trail'.
3️⃣Accommodation: Staying in Tashkurgan is feasible; book a room in advance through an app. The rooms are mostly bungalows, but the interior decoration is the same as hotels and folk customs, without any difference. The temperature can vary greatly at night, rooms are equipped with electric heating plates, and the conditions are completely acceptable.
4️⃣Dining: There are quite a few dining places in Tashkurgan where you can try the local specialty 'Yak Hotpot'. Near the Yak Hotpot, there is also a local milk tea shop 'Pamir's Milk Tea' which also offers local special snacks that you can try.
5️⃣Notes: Bring extra clothes as the temperature can vary greatly. It is advised to carry some water on the road. The driver will be very tired after concentrating for the whole trip. There are many viewing platforms along the road, make sure to get out of the car to take photos safely, it's very photogenic! It is recommended to bring a drone for a more spectacular panoramic view. At the entrance of the Panlong Ancient Trail, there is a snack street, so you don't have to worry about being hungry, but the prices might be a bit high.
Tashkurgan has many beautiful sights, come and check in soon.
Xinjiang | Experience the snow-capped mountains in early spring
Feel the different temperature of spring in southern Xinjiang.
1️⃣ Location: Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in Kashgar, Southern Xinjiang
2️⃣ Attractions: Panlong Ancient Path, Wakhan Corridor, Warrior Mountain, Stone City, Why Flowers Are So Red, White Sand Lake, Muztagh Glacier Park, Bandier Blue Lake, Oytag Red Valley...
3️⃣ Transportation: It is recommended to rent a car for travel, the price is very affordable. For the four of us, the total cost for three days was about 700 per person❕ (Joining a tour group costs about 800 per person for two days) Renting a car is more appropriate.
4️⃣ Accommodation: Book in advance on the app, many homestays have similar prices, they are basically self-built houses but the interior is completely hotel-style, the conditions are not bad at all.
5️⃣ Dining: For the first visit to Tashkurgan, you can try the local specialty 'Yak Hotpot', which is not very expensive. It is recommended to book on the app, as there is some difference from the menu prices in the restaurant. For breakfast, there are many breakfast shops offering steamed buns, pan-fried dumplings, spicy soup, etc. (if you are not used to the local breakfast). There are also barbecue restaurants, pepper chicken, and so on, all very complete.
6️⃣ Tips: It is advised to bring more clothes, as the temperature at some attractions is just right, but! The temperature in Muztagh Glacier Park is very low, extremely cold, minus thirteen degrees! It is recommended to bring your own oxygen bottles (there is a price difference compared to those sold outside the attractions). There are many beautiful sceneries along the way, it is strongly recommended to stop and take beautiful photos📷 when parking is possible! It's really, really, really photogenic, every shot can be a screen wallpaper💯

Pamirs Plateau Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Touring Southern Xinjiang | Heading to the Pamir Plateau | Pamir always needs to be seen once
Some places, just hearing the name makes people love it, and Pamir is one of them. This land carries the snow-capped Muztagh, Gongger Jiubie Peak; it has Karakul Lake, White Sand Lake; there are Wakhan Corridor, Hongqirafu Port, and all these are centered on Tashkurgan, this border county town at the junction of three countries in western China.
In terms of scenery, honestly, I think it may be slightly inferior to the Tibetan plateau landscape, but in a geographical sense, this is a place that must be visited once in a lifetime. And the Taerman Wetland is the place I think can best showcase the scenery of Pamir.
Here, the blue sky, white clouds, snow-capped mountains, rivers and grasslands are perfectly integrated, presenting the most authentic plateau landscape. It is hard to find another picture that can simultaneously display snow-capped glaciers, red ridges, green pastures and gurgling streams. Each layer is a unique landscape and landform, but together they elevate this stunning scenery again. Southern Xinjiang is mostly desert, with a dry climate, and the Pamir Plateau is the same, but the Taerman Wetland is a rare plateau pasture.
Muztagh Peak, known as the father of glaciers, has very developed glaciers. The huge ice tongues scatter down from the mountain, and the distant snow-capped mountains are Gongger Peak and Gongger Jiubie Peak, which are also the highest peaks on the west side of the Kunlun Mountains.
"Today I have walked all the detours, and from now on my life is smooth", this sentence is absolutely a textbook-level tourism slogan. Whether my future is smooth, I don't know, but in Pamir, I have indeed walked a lot of detours these days.
There are many other places worth checking in, such as the Apricot Flower Village in Datong Township, the signboard of the Wakhan Corridor, the Bandir Blue Lake on the Panlong Back Tower County Road, etc. But I think all the attractions are more meaningful because they are all part of the Pamir Plateau. Pamir is always worth exploring.
If you haven't been to Southern Xinjiang, you won't know the beauty of Xinjiang - the Pamir Plateau
The mysterious Pamir. If you haven't been to Xinjiang, you won't know the vastness of China; if you haven't been to Southern Xinjiang, you won't know the beauty of Xinjiang.
Southern Xinjiang is not only a place to see culture, but also scenery. Southern Xinjiang has the White Sand Lake, which is half white sand and half lake, the majestic Gongger Peak and Jiubie Peak, the Muztagh Peak known as the 'Father of Ice Mountains', the rugged Panlong Ancient Road, the Bandir Blue Lake, the Yarkand River, and the exotic Kashgar Old City.
The snow mountains of the Pamir Plateau are so close that they seem to be within reach, and the emerald-like lakes change with the weather and angle at any time, everything is so beautiful that it makes people intoxicated ☺️
This winter, come to Southern Xinjiang for a visit.
Xinjiang Muztag Peak | It is finally arrived at the Pamirs
is finally arrived in the Pamirs, the westernmost border of the Chinese border, is also the southernmost coordinates of this Xinjiang road trip.
The car is driving in the borderland, walking in the thin air of the Pamirs, sleeping night under the Muztag Peak, suddenly feels that those who have been quiet for thousands of years, it seems that they have never been clean The land has happened.
Only plateaus, snow mountains, lake glaciers,
into eternity.
Tips
One must visit the Pamir Plateau at least once in a lifetime, even if it means enduring altitude sickness
The Pamir Plateau, known in ancient China as the Congling, was traversed by the ancient Silk Road. It is located in the southeastern part of Central Asia, at the westernmost point of China, stretching across Tajikistan, China, and Afghanistan. It is the convergence point of several major mountain ranges in Asia. 'Pamir' means 'the roof of the world' in Tajik, and the plateau has an average altitude of 4000 meters to 7700 meters, boasting many high peaks, with the main peaks all above 6000 meters. There are mountain passes such as the Khunjerab and Mintaka, which were important passages of the ancient Silk Road heading south to India, west to Afghanistan, and Iran. The moment you set foot on the Pamir Plateau, tears involuntarily fill your eyes. It's not out of sadness, but a tearful appreciation for nature's grandeur—beauty beyond imagination.
