Outstanding

Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan city ruin, established by the Maya around 432-455 AD based on the manuscripts of Chumayya. In 1533, the Spanish conquered the area. Chichen Itza declined in the late 12th century and was later abandoned. It was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1988 and selected as one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World" in July 2007. It stands as historical evidence of the Mayan and Toltec civilizations in the Yucatan region. On the north side of the pyramid, many tourists, guided by their guides, clap three times, pause three times, and then clap three more times. They hear a call similar to that of the Mayan sacred bird, the green quetzal, emanating from inside the pyramid. This activity, spread by tourists and guides, has become a must-do experience, highly interactive and easily shared.
