We stayed at the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort during our week-long stay in Maui, and it truly lived up to its reputation as a great place to use your FreeN pass. Compared to the two Waldorf Astoria hotels in LA, the rooms weren't newer, but the ocean view was excellent. The hotel itself was also very scenic, especially the small chapel by the sea. My husband and I had a $50 credit per day, which could be used at breakfast or the bar. I don't know if it was due to the hotel's natural environment or if guests left food outside their doors, but a huge, Cantonese-sized crab appeared in the middle of the night! There's a shopping mall nearby, and for brunch, we went to Island Vintage Coffee, a must-visit every time I'm in Hawaii. I especially loved the purple sweet potato bagel! Mama's Fish House on Road to Hana is supposedly incredibly difficult to book, and we hadn't managed to get a reservation before we went. So, on our way back to the hotel from Road to Hana, we thought we'd try our luck. Surprisingly, there was no line and we walked in! For those who couldn't get a reservation but still want to try, you can try going in the evening; it's even easier for two people to avoid the line and get a table at the bar. We ordered papaya beef, grilled fish, and curry, and none of them were bad. After dinner, the guy at the next table said that the espresso here was the best he had ever had, so we ordered one too, even though it was late at night. Nalu’s South Shore Grill is cheap, has large portions, is filling, and has a great atmosphere, but the food is just so-so.

Quickly writing a Hawaii travelogue, personally feel that being a special forces soldier in Hawaii can save a lot. Travel dates: 1/19/25 - 1/24/25 Day 1: Arrived in Maui at 3 PM, picked up the car from Hertz and drove straight to the summit of Haleakalā (P3P4), but the parking lot was full and they wouldn’t let me in. So I went to Wailea to find a public beach to watch the sunset (P5), and took the opportunity to use my Resy credit at a nearby Japanese restaurant. At night, I drove to Safeway to buy a few sandwiches for the next day’s food, then slept in the back seat in the parking lot. Around 2 AM, I woke up and drove up the mountain, arriving at the summit around 4 AM to watch the sunrise (P6). The ranger also played a traditional Hawaiian conch shell horn. After taking some photos at the summit (P7), I drove down and took a counterclockwise loop along the south coast (towards Kaupō). This road was extremely difficult to drive, so much so that when I later drove the Road to Hana in reverse, it felt like driving on a highway. The south coast scenery was actually very beautiful, but I couldn’t fit all 18 photos here. I reached Hana, lounged by the sea for a bit, then drove back along the Road to Hana, stopping at a few waterfalls and beaches along the way (P8-10). Later, I reached the west coast at Kaanapali and casually found a roadside spot to watch the sunset (P11). Stayed overnight at a hostel in Wailuku called Howzit Hostel, parked on the street. Day 3: Woke up and drove a counterclockwise loop along the west side (towards Kahakuloa). This section was also quite difficult to drive and required excellent reversing skills. At Kaanapali, I parked in a public lot and sneaked into a luxury hotel pool by the beach (P12). Then I headed to the airport to return the car and flew to the Big Island (P13). Rented a 4WD there to go up Mauna Kea, then drove straight to the base of Mauna Kea. At the base, someone checked the vehicle and explained how to use low gear braking, then I followed the traffic all the way up to the 4,000-meter summit and witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime sunset (P1, P14). Stayed overnight at Open Gate Hostel in the south, with a starry sky right outside the window (P15). Day 4: Woke up and drove to the volcano. Unfortunately, I missed the eruption by a few days and only saw a little smoke (P16). After hiking for an hour, I started heading back. Halfway through, I realized I had bought the wrong flight ticket for the next day, so I changed the ticket and chose to stay another night by redeeming 70,000 points for Hilton Waikoloa Village. The hotel is accessible by bus route 80 from the airport, so I ended up resting an extra day and didn’t do much (P17P18). The hotel was nothing special, just a regular seaside resort with a small train that was quite interesting.
