As I grew up, I especially disliked the “bustle,” especially during the Chinese New Year and winter vacation when the crowds are predictable and overwhelming. 🍀 My child has always wanted to climb the Great Wall from the textbooks and witness its grandeur in person. As a mom, thinking about the crowded and windy Great Wall in winter made me hesitant for a long time. This winter vacation, I finally made a big plan. Among several sections of the Great Wall, we wavered between Simatai and Jinshanling, and ultimately decided to visit Jinshanling first. Most tourists start here. Since it was the Spring Festival, there were quite a few people on this section, but it wasn’t crowded. When there’s no snow in winter, the Great Wall inside and out has a desolate yet magnificent beauty. Every beacon tower has its name. Many tourists turn back at General’s Ridge, and some go from Shaling Pass further to Houchuan Pass to find a descent path. After Shaling Pass, the number of tourists drops significantly. ➡️ We chose to continue forward from Houchuan Pass. From this point on, it belongs to the “original appearance area.” The path is very steep, and the beacon towers are in ruins, which I personally loved. My child enjoyed the hands-and-feet climbing 🧗 feeling very much. This section of the Great Wall has a connection to Simatai at the far end, but a part of the path is broken in the middle. The farther you go, the wilder it gets, and the fewer people there are. It offers both safety and the original flavor of the Great Wall. Even though it’s physically challenging, it’s worth it. ⚠️ Reminder: Elderly people should act within their limits. The steep slopes make it easier to fall. The climbing areas are very windy, so be sure to protect yourself from the wind. Having trekking poles adds a sense of security! Jinshanling Great Wall not only has beautiful scenery but also offers relatively easy access to the more original sections. The ticket price is among the lowest for the entire Great Wall, making it very worthwhile. After the hike, enjoy a cup of coffee and a pizza 🍕 at the foot of the mountain, along with various little cats 🐈 and dogs 🐶—so healing ❤️‍🩹!

The crossing between the villages of Gubeikou and Jinshanling is perfect if you want to experience an original part of the Great Wall with almost zero tourists. At Jinshanling, part of the wall has been restored. It’s better to download the trail map beforehand so you don’t get lost. In some parts, you walk directly on the wall, and in others, you follow a trail beside it. It’s not always clear which way you’re supposed to go, and that’s how you can easily lose your direction.
