A Relaxing and Memorable Stay at Riu Atoll
We just returned from 12 nights at the fabulous Riu Atoll, and it's fair to say the experience exceeded our expectations in celebrating our silver wedding anniversary. From the warm welcome on the jetty to the affectionate send-off from the staff, we felt genuinely looked after. The hotel embodies typical RIU style but is truly brought to life by the remarkable staff. Every team member goes all out to ensure guests feel satisfied. Having stayed frequently in RIU hotels globally (you generally know what to expect and feel secure wherever you are), the staff here stood out for their friendly yet professional demeanor. Despite the long trek from the UK, we managed better than expected. We arrived in Male around 12.15 pm and reached the hotel by 4 pm. At Male airport, find the RIU desk where a staff member will guide you through to a cozy waiting area in the domestic terminal, offering complimentary food and drinks. Following a brief 45-minute domestic flight, you reach Dhaalu where helpful staff assist with bags and lead you to a minibus followed by a boat transfer to the hotel. Everything is very organized. The hardest part was locating the RIU desk (it's at the far right of the hall). After that, relaxation was effortless! Another compelling reason for booking this hotel was its variety of activities, ensuring my husband wouldn't get bored staying on one island. They offer the usual assortment of RIU Fit and RIU Fun activities, but the staff running them exceeded expectations with their welcoming, non-pushy approach and varied exercises (I tried suspension training out of curiosity and Sanjay was incredibly accommodating. Though it wasn't my preferred exercise style, he was patient and let me give it a shot. They also offer aero yoga, stretching, and total body workout exercises, although I didn't try those. Other activities are available as well). Aqua fit/gym/fun was a highlight for me, with Sanjoo and Vladim making it enjoyable while still incorporating proper aqua exercises. Aimee was wonderful at entertaining guests, maintaining a positive attitude in the intense heat, which is impressive. Hats off to the entire team for their hard work! The stunning lagoon of the Indian Ocean surrounds you, and snorkeling opportunities abound with diverse marine life in the house reef. I was fortunate to win a trip with the marine biologist, who expertly guided us around the reef while detailing the conservation project, sharing insights on coral nurseries and reef restoration. The marine biologist hosts a talk on Sunday nights followed by a Kahoot game where you can win a trip (other activities might offer similar prizes). This excursion was a vacation highlight. The Scuba Caribe water sports center offers numerous activities like paddle boarding, kayaking, and pedaloes, with snorkel equipment included for AI guests; I aqua, jet skis, and boat trips are extra. We joined a snorkel tour to Leopard reef, finding marine life less varied yet enjoying the open sea experience. The sunset cruise was also pleasant, offering a scenic boat ride past islands and seeing flying fish—though no dolphins, unfortunately. They offer free scuba diving demos in the pool, providing a taste before committing to a full session. Despite my DVT history potentially affecting insurance coverage for diving, I trusted their services for quality lessons and dives at the house reef. Our room in block 1500 felt ideal; it was quieter yet close enough to the hotel's hub. As you arrive on the island, you'll find the bars, restaurants, and pools at the entrance of the hotel, while villas are more secluded towards the opposite end. These villa accommodations include approximately 8-10 rooms and are typically quieter, each offering direct beach access and sunbeds on the terrace—perfect for peaceful relaxation away from activities. Opting for a ground floor room grants convenient beach access. We spent most afternoons here, walking and snorkeling through the reef on the opposite side of the island (consider requesting a room higher than 2000 for proximity to the reef, preferably reef-side as opposed to the more tranquil opposite side). The island's far end features hammocks and sunbeds among trees, offering a deserted island vibe—serene and calming. The room was cleaned meticulously daily and supply refreshes were frequent, including water, sodas (beer being the only alcohol), tea, and coffee. The room was appropriately sized for us with a large double bed, settee, coffee table, and a spacious bathroom with a big shower. The restaurant and bars were impressive too. We dined solely at the main restaurant as other specialty venues lacked veggie options; yet excellent service ensured satisfaction (thanks to Annabella who attentively found us tables and kept our drinks refilled). The cuisine was varied and suited diverse tastes, featuring Asian, Mediterranean, and Maldivian styles with assorted salads, cheeses, and fruits centrally positioned. The chefs (especially at the Asian counter) took pride in their dishes and readily assisted me as a vegetarian, providing a gourmet experience unique to AI resorts. Food explanations were clear, specifying meat types, vegan options, etc., with chefs offering additional insights when asked—try the silver dish for more local flavors. While less fresh fruit than anticipated, available selections like pineapple, melon, bananas, and notably tasty oranges marked an acceptable assortment given supply limitations. Shivaz and fellow waiters were attentive, managing the restaurant efficiently, diligently arranging tables for larger groups. The bars were well-managed too. The pool bar staff, including Niko and Jessica, established rapport and shared hotel updates. Niko impressively remembered our names and checked on guests even after days of absence. Ash (I think) and others at the pool bar expertly recalled drink preferences. The sports bar and evening entertainment area were also managed well. 'Beach style' seating with sand underfoot and rattan chairs offered a unique environment for RIUland entertainment and main parties. Thanks to Nagenda for overseeing bar areas with professionalism and friendly service, accommodating our nightly need for milk for tea. He was steadfast in looking out for guest safety amidst potential over-consumption situations, though we experienced none. Lastly, the August spa special provided unparalleled relaxation through a valuable massage. Special mention goes to the kind gentleman maintaining restroom cleanliness, especially near the sports and evening bar. His consistently warm demeanor and exhaustive toilet upkeep were admirable. Exemplary work ethics were evident across the entire staff, representing diverse backgrounds united harmoniously as a team. This resort earns my wholehearted recommendation. Considering the Palace vs. Atoll resort decision, the quieter Palace might appeal to some, though activities are centered in the Atoll, requiring travel via buggy or on-foot across the jetty. I favored Atoll's active environment as even a quieter resort enthusiast, with many secluded spots available for tranquility. Thanks once more to all, whose names I may not recall individually but whose efforts were recognized. We've forged incredible memories here and aspire to return.
