Richmond is located at the top of the South Island of New Zealand, right at the southern tip of Tasman Bay. It sits approximately 13 kilometers (about a 15-minute drive) southwest of the city of Nelson and functions as the administrative center for the Tasman District. Key Highlights & Character The Sunshine & Berry Capital: Nestled on the fertile Waimea Plains, Richmond enjoys some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. The surrounding countryside is world-famous for its orchards, vineyards, and berry farms—particularly the local boysenberries (often enjoyed as fresh, real-fruit ice cream at local farm stalls during summer). Gateway to Artisan Flavors: The town sits right on the doorstep of Tasman’s premier food and wine country. Nearby Appleby and Māpua feature family-owned boutique wineries (like Seifried Estate, the oldest wine estate in the South Island), craft breweries, and artisan food producers. Cycling & Nature: Richmond is a primary hub for Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, a popular Ngā Haerenga Great Ride. Cyclists can leisurely pedal along scenic coastal boardwalks around the Waimea Inlet, stopping at roadside cafes, art galleries, and craft beverage spots along the way. Colonial Heritage: Originally settled in 1842 as Waimea East before being renamed in 1854 after Richmond upon Thames, the town retains a welcoming, community-focused spirit with historic roots, classic country pubs, and lush botanical parks like the Richmond Domain. When we arrived in Richmond, autumn was in full bloom. We spent our time walking along the quiet roads and down to the beach, taking in the stunning autumn scenery. I’ve always loved this season—there’s such a calm, peaceful energy here. With fewer people around, life moves at a much gentler pace, cars drive a little slower, and we had all the time in the world to cook, unwind, and truly enjoy our own quiet "me time." #travelblogger #blogger #travel#beachlife#thingstodo#myitinerary

What would a city look like if it were nestled between a lake and mountains, with hundreds of historic buildings preserved in its downtown area? Tucked away in the southeastern part of British Columbia, Canada, lies just such a small city: Nelson. It sits on the shores of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, embraced by the Selkirk Mountains. From a distance, the houses unfold in layers along the hillside, with the lake right at the city's feet. Once you enter the downtown area, you will find that the most surprising thing about this city is actually its streets. A street that takes you back over 100 years The most iconic place in Nelson is Baker Street. This street appeared in the city's urban planning as early as 1888. Walking here today, you can still see a large number of historic brick and stone commercial buildings on both sides. Most of these are not "retro-style" districts built later, but actual urban architecture that has remained since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Nelson) Why did a small mountain city build so many beautiful structures back then? In the late 19th century, rich mineral deposits were discovered on nearby Toad Mountain, and the development of the Silver King Mine attracted a large number of prospectors, merchants, and investors to the area. In 1889, the place was named Nelson, and it was officially incorporated as a city in 1897. With the development of mining, railways, and commerce, Nelson quickly grew from a lakeside settlement into an important hub for the West Kootenay region. (Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism) As wealth flowed into the city, banks, hotels, shops, and public buildings sprang up one after another. In 1897, to reduce the risk of fire, Nelson required new buildings to be constructed using brick or stone. Unintentionally, this regulation helped shape the most important urban landscape of Baker Street today. These old buildings were almost hidden by time However, Nelson's appearance today was not preserved naturally. By the 20th century, the original facades of many old buildings had been covered by modern exteriors. In 1979, local merchants and city officials began promoting a large-scale restoration project, investing over US$3 million to reveal the original appearance of many historic buildings. Between 1980 and 1985, about 70 historic buildings were restored in the downtown area alone. Today, the City of Nelson states that the city boasts more than 350 restored historic buildings, and these historic structures have become one of the city's most distinct identities. (Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism) So, when you come to Nelson, there is no need to rush to find a specific "must-visit attraction." Take a slow walk along Baker Street to see the old buildings, street-side shops, and cafes, then head to the lakefront to see the preserved vintage streetcar. The city is small, but history has not been locked away in a museum; instead, it continues to exist in the streets that people pass by every day. (Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism) And when you look up again from the end of the old street, the mountains are still in the distance, and the lake is still below. Perhaps this is what makes Nelson so special: The lake gave it scenery, the mountains once brought mining and wealth, and those preserved old buildings have kept the stories from over 100 years ago alive today.

My homestay airbnb was super lovely. A three story house near the coast with big huge windows that overlooked the sea. And of course, a balcony to oversee the coast with a sunset view for dinner.

Exploring Grampians Reserve was a lovely way to see another side of Nelson. The walk begins among the trees, with peaceful forest paths winding through the slopes of the reserve. Along the way, the scenery gradually opens up, making the walk feel more rewarding with every step. The sign at the entrance shows two tracks leading to the viewing platform — Mahoe Track and Kahikatea Track. I followed the path through the forest and enjoyed the changing views as I reached the higher part of the reserve. From the viewpoint, Nelson city and the surrounding landscape stretch out below, with Nelson Haven, the Boulder Bank and Tasman Bay visible in the distance. It was a beautiful place to stop for a while and take in the scenery. What I enjoyed most was the combination of a quiet forest walk and the wide views from above. The tall trees, natural pathways and changing scenery made this a memorable stop during my time in Nelson. 📍 Grampians Reserve, Nelson, New Zealand #GrampiansReserve #NelsonNewZealand #Nelson #NewZealand #NewZealandTravel #SouthIsland #ForestWalk #WalkingTrail #NatureWalk #ScenicViews #TravelPhotography #ExploreNewZealand #TasmanBay #TravelMoments #Tripcom

A peaceful view by the waterfront in Nelson, with a sailing boat moored in the harbour and beautiful scenery surrounding the area. I enjoyed taking a slow walk here and simply taking in the view — the calm water, the boats and the open landscape made it a lovely spot to pause during the day. Sometimes, it’s these simple waterfront moments that make a trip memorable. 🌿⛵ 📍 Maitai River Mouth, Nelson, New Zealand #NelsonNewZealand #Nelson #NewZealand #NelsonHaven #NelsonMarina #NewZealandTravel #SouthIsland #Waterfront #SailingBoat #TravelPhotography #ExploreNewZealand #NatureAndTravel #TravelMoments #Tripcom

#easytravelpost The Heaphy Track runs 82 km from Golden Bay (Collingwood) to Karamea, 4–6 days, a DOC Great Walk. The mossy palm grove ridge is the section between Gouland Downs and the Kohai Saddle (day 3 northbound) where Rhopalostylis sapida (nikau, NZ's only palm) mixes with Sphagnium seeps and Racomitrium on the tussock edge — nikau doesn't grow south of Westport, so this is the track's signature subtropical-meets-Alpine moment. I booked the 2025/26 season (international hut 66 NZD/night peak, 44 NZD shoulder; campsite 28 NZD peak, bookings open May via DOC, random checks) , flew Air Chathams to Nelson then drove. Mid-March: downs 15°C day, ridge 9°C night, moss squelch at dawn. Wore boots + gaiters; the ridge is mud-and-board, the palm grove seep boot-suck. Mistake: I booked southbound Karamea→Collingwood in Feb — peak sold out, got waitlisted, took a 48-hr cancellation alert at 2 a.m., yes. Book May 12. Second mistake: I carried a 2-kg camera tripod — hut benches full, every gram on the 82 km hurts, left it at Gouland. Third: I cut a nikau frond for a "palm umbrella" — DOC: nikau is slow-growing, 1 frond = 2 yrs, 200 NZD fine. Buy before the track: a 15 NZD resupply box in Karamea (dehydrated meals, no fresh veg), not the 60 NZD Nelson supermarket splurge. Gear: a 200 NZD 0°C bag — Heaphy nights hit 2°C even in March. Local rule: Great Walk booking mandatory, no dogs, no drones, huts have mattresses not food, carry out rubbish, the nikau grove is no-cut. The moss in the grove seep is the track's softest bed — step on board. Opinion: 66 NZD/night for a heated DOC hut on an 82 km track past a mossy nikau ridge is the best tramping value in NZ. Should DOC cap daily starts at 40 and add a 10 NZD "palm + moss" hut talk at Gouland, or keep it silent? I'd cap + talk. Would you tramp 82 km for a mossy nikau grove on a 1,000 m ridge?

#easytravelpost The Heaphy is NZ's longest Great Walk—78 km, 4–6 days, Brown Hut (Golden Bay) to Kohaihai (West Coast). No park entry fee, but huts are 66 NZD/night international adult Oct–Apr, 30 NZD May–Sep; campsites 28 NZD international Oct–Apr, 19 May–Sep; all bookings mandatory year-round via DOC. I flew into Nelson, bus to Collingwood (2.5 hrs), shuttle to Brown Hut, and walked westbound. Day 3 is the Gouland Downs: high tussock, 600 m contours, then the descent to the Heaphy River where the cliff flax (Phormium) leans over the gorge and the nīkau palms start. I camped at Heaphy Hut (28 NZD), swam the mouth at 07:00 (14°C, 10 min max), and pushed the coastal section next day—limestone cliffs, seal haul-outs, wind that pins you sideways. Mountain bikes allowed May–Sep only. Mistake: I booked late (3 weeks out) and got split hut nights with a 9 km overload day—book 3–4 months ahead for Oct–Apr. Another: I carried 1 L between huts and ran dry on the Gouland saddle; 2.5 L, the downs have no water. Would you walk the Heaphy westbound for the coastal finish at Kohaihai, or reverse it to save the dunes for last?

Tasman Golf Club in New Zealand is located in the Nelson Tasman region at the northern tip of the South Island, perched atop the picturesque Kina Cliffs. Hailed as a "hidden gem" by legendary golfer Sir Bob Charles, it is renowned for its breathtaking coastline and is widely recognized as having some of the most spectacular views of any golf course in New Zealand. ⛳ Course Highlights & Design Stunning Scenery: Perched on steep cliffs, offering sweeping views of Tasman Bay and the Mount Arthur range. Course Layout: A 9-hole course (can be played as an 18-hole round) featuring rolling terrain and relatively small greens. Ball Control Challenge: With no flat fairways, it provides the ultimate test of a golfer's precision and ball control. Signature Holes: Teeing off from a cliff-top tee box, and a challenging Par 3 right along the cliff edge that battles the sea breeze. 📍 Location The course is situated near the charming town of Mapua, making it an easy drive to either Nelson or Motueka. The surrounding area is famous for its premium wineries, craft breweries, cycling trails, and numerous art galleries—perfect for planning a relaxing getaway that combines golf with incredible food and wine.

Christ Church Cathedral in Nelson is the most prominent landmark and spiritual heart of this sunny city on New Zealand's South Island. Perched high atop Church Hill in the city center, its magnificent bell tower can be easily spotted from almost any corner of town. Architectural Highlights 1. A Cross-Century Build: The foundation stone was laid in 1925, but due to wars, funding shortages, and seismic design upgrades, it took 40 years to complete in 1965. 2. A Blend of Materials: Blending modern and Gothic styles, the front section features rare Takaka marble, while the rear uses white concrete for added earthquake resistance. 3. Breaking Tradition: Constrained by the hilltop terrain, the cathedral abandons the traditional east-west orientation in favor of a north-south axis. 4. The 35-Meter Tower: The iconic main tower houses eight large bells that still ring regularly today. 🎨 Inner Art Treasures Stained Glass: The double-pane "Water of Life" window at the southern end beautifully weaves together Māori culture and the local natural landscape. Antique Pipe Organ: Originally from London in 1871, this majestic instrument boasts over 2,000 pipes and delivers a breathtaking sound. Holy Stone of Jerusalem: The sanctuary's foundation stone hails from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, elegantly inlaid within local marble.

Sprig & Fern is located on Hardy Street East, just a four-minute drive from Tahunanui Beach. My usual routine is to head to the beach in the late afternoon—the long, shallow tidal flats let you walk out quite far at low tide, and you might even spot the occasional seal. Afterward, I’ll swing by Founders Park (which features replica Victorian buildings and a microbrewery) to check out some of the outdoor art installations before finally settling into the taproom for a tasting flight (five 150ml pours). The TV screens are tucked away in unassuming corners so they don't distract from the vibe. Most patrons here are craft beer lovers and beachgoers; during a match, you might see people raise their glasses in a toast, but it rarely gets rowdy. I highly recommend the Sprig & Fern because it perfectly balances "beer education" with "football viewing"—you might actually learn the difference between Nelson Sauvin hops and passionfruit esters during halftime. It's the ultimate Nelson slow-living philosophy: beach first, art second, and the game last. Don't mess with the order. Parking: There are dedicated parking spots right in front of the pub; however, arriving early is recommended on weekends during the peak season.

The Nelson Suburbs Hotel is located on the northern end of Rutherford Street, just an eight-minute walk from the downtown Trafalgar Mall. Start by exploring this pedestrian-only street to check out the sundial and street artists, then look for the starting marker for the "Centre of New Zealand" hike (about a 25-minute round trip starting from behind the tennis courts, offering views of Tasman Bay from the top). Afterward, head back to the pub and order a local Nelson craft beer (on tap from Mac's or Sprig & Fern) paired with some fried blue cod. The crowd is mostly made up of locals from the suburbs and brewers, keeping a quietly intense focus during games. I highly recommend this spot because Nelson boasts the most sunshine hours in the country and a rich brewing culture. Enjoying a top-notch local lager on a World Cup night, especially after taking in the city views from the hilltop—I just love that ritual of "knowing exactly where you are before diving into the game." This isn't a tourist trap; it's the living room of the community. Accommodation: A downtown motel or an Airbnb near the Church Steps area.

Stepping into this verdant sanctuary, a diverse array of plants flourishes before your eyes. Some boast unique shapes that look like meticulously crafted artworks, while others are covered in vibrant blossoms, painting the entire area in a kaleidoscope of colors. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting a dappled glow on the ground that makes it feel as though you're walking on scattered gold dust. The air is crisp and dewy; take a deep breath, and you can feel a refreshing rush of negative ions filling your lungs. As you wander along the winding path, the scenery shifts with every step—one moment you're greeted by a meadow speckled with wildflowers, and the next, towering ferns unfurling their fronds catch your eye. There are no contrived, artificial designs here; everything thrives in its natural state. Yet, the subtle touch of mindful caretakers is evident throughout. A stroll through this space allows you to fully immerse yourself in the vibrant beauty of life, bringing a profound sense of tranquility and a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

On a small hill in the center of Nelson, New Zealand, a solemn gray marble building overlooks the entire city—this is Nelson Cathedral, the most prominent landmark in Nelson and the spiritual heart of this sunny city. The story of the cathedral spans over a century: founded in 1925 and finally completed in 1965, its unique hybrid style bears witness to the changes of the times. Due to the limitations of the hilltop terrain, the cathedral adopts a rare north-south axis layout, with a 35-meter-high bell tower visible from any corner of the city. Most of the building materials are marble sourced from near Takaka, presenting a warm and unique gray tone. Stepping into the cathedral is like entering a sanctuary of light and color. The most stunning feature is the Great Rose Window on the east cross wing—the central image of Christ is surrounded by twelve doves, and sunlight passing through the stained glass fills the entire space with sacred light. The Apostles' Windows on both sides and the modern stained glass "The River of Life" at the south end each tell different stories of faith. The pipe organ is another treasure—2,481 pipes were shipped from London in 1871, and after expansion in 1968, it became even more magnificent. You can also find the chair used by Queen Elizabeth II during her 1954 visit, as well as historical military flags from the Gallipoli landing. Climb the steps in front of the cathedral to take in the entire city of Nelson. After visiting, you might stroll down the well-preserved historic district along South Street to the west, encountering art-filled galleries and shops. The cathedral is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM free of charge. If you visit in December, you can also experience the annual Christmas Tree Festival—over 70 uniquely decorated Christmas trees, free midday concerts, and evening lighting ceremonies bring magical festive brilliance to this ancient cathedral. At Nelson Cathedral, you don’t just see a building; you touch the century-old faith and glory of this city.

I went to Nelson!

"I stopped by to kill time before my flight, and had a wonderful time! First of all, the location is great, with the runway visible from the large windows. Watching the planes take off and land while sipping coffee really gets you in the mood for your trip. And the coffee was even better than I expected! They use local beans, so I was pleased with the authentic flavor. The freshly baked bread I ordered with it also had a homemade feel, was fresh, and delicious. There was a wide variety, so it was fun to choose. They open early in the morning, so I'm really grateful that I can get a hot coffee and a snack even on an early flight. The atmosphere is great for an airport cafe, and I think it's a valuable oasis where you can relax before departure!"

It's a two-hour drive from Nelson on the South Island. 🚗 This restaurant lies in the middle of nowhere, so you'll be surprised it even exists. They're famous for their mussels, so I ordered mussel clam chowder and carrot cake. The clam chowder had an unusual tomato base and was packed with shellfish and vegetables. The accompanying garlic toast was homemade and delicious! ✨ The carrot cake I had after the meal was moist and topped with yogurt. 🥕 It was also incredibly delicious! It was November, but it was a very cold day, so the fireplace was roaring, creating a great atmosphere. 🔥There were many reservations for groups and people playing cards, and it was bustling with locals. The homey atmosphere made it a great place to stay. If you're visiting the South Island, be sure to visit! 📍Kiln Studio A stylish, open space with a pottery studio on the second floor and a cafe/roaster on the first floor. 🌿 The cafe isn't listed on Google Maps, so it feels like a hidden gem. The dappled sunlight and plants create a lovely atmosphere that makes you want to stay. They also serve coffee and cookies. It's located in Nelson City, so it's easily accessible and highly recommended. ✨ #nelson #newzealand

📍Brick Eatery This restaurant was recommended to me during my trip to Nelson, so I visited it. 🍽️Everything was delicious, but I especially recommend the chicken liver and ricotta gnocchi! ✨🤤 The final dessert was a strange treat I'd never tried before: meringue with berry ice cream inside and a sponge cake underneath! 🍓 I made a reservation, but it wasn't crowded, so I think you could even walk in. I highly recommend the terrace seating! 🌞 If you're ever in Nelson, be sure to check it out. 💕 #Nelson #NewZealand #nelson

Located about a 30-minute walk from the city center, the pleasant weather made the journey enjoyable. The park features well-preserved old buildings and vehicles. Riding the operational train was a highlight. This small park recreates the old town of Nelson. The receptionist was very kind and provided detailed explanations about the map and facilities. Inside the park, there are shops and restaurants, and some visitors were walking their dogs. The charming buildings, cars, and even a real airplane make this park highly recommended for learning about the history of Nelson.

#0YenJourneyToNewZealand In the heart of New Zealand. This monument sits atop Nelson Hill. It's about a 30-minute climb from the parking lot. It's a moderate climb, but I recommend it for those with the time and energy. From the top of the hill, you can get a panoramic view of Nelson city. It's actually known as the "navel of New Zealand." You can get a panoramic view of Nelson city and the ocean, and looking back, the vast mountains are beautiful. It's not a particularly steep hill, and it takes less than 20 minutes to reach the summit, so many people choose to hike up as part of their walk.

#0YenJourneyToNewZealand I boarded a small propeller plane from this cute airport and it took just under two hours to get to Christchurch. I was a bit nervous, but it was more stable than I expected. On a 100-seater jet, carry-on luggage is allowed, but there was no storage space, so I checked it in and was charged an excess fee. It's a country where airfares are cheap but options cost money. The close proximity and ease of using airplanes makes it more convenient for travel than Japan. Please give it a try!

#0YenTripToNewZealand You can enter even on a normal day. There aren't many buildings like this in Nelson, so I recommend visiting it at least once if you're sightseeing. It's incredibly mystical and will make a wonderful memory. I'm not a believer, but I went to Sunday morning mass just to experience it. The solemn yet warm atmosphere was wonderful. It's definitely worth a visit, so please do!
