Heading south from Okayama, we arrived at Onomichi, the only thriving port in the Seto Inland Sea, nestled on steep slopes. It serves as a stopover on the way to Hiroshima City. After storing our luggage 🧳 at the station, we discovered a cosplay and market event happening in the square across the street. The bustling crowd made it seem like everyone in Onomichi had taken Monday off to gather here. After mingling with the crowd to explore, we returned to our tourist itinerary, passing through a somewhat quiet shopping street to reach the Senkoji Ropeway 🚡. Under the blazing midday sun, we queued for about twenty minutes to ascend to Senkoji Park, where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. We then entered Senkoji Temple to light a candle 🕯️ and pray for family peace. Following that, we strolled along the Cat Alley, feeling the sea breeze and listening to the sound of wind chimes 🎐, searching for traces of cats. I must admit, Cat Alley felt like a small, rundown version of Houtong Cat Village, with its art installations appearing somewhat aged and neglected, leaving a slight sense of disappointment. However, looking at postcards depicting cats and the mountain town, I guessed it might just be bad luck 🍀 this time. At the end of our Onomichi journey, we walked along the Seto Inland Sea coastline on what CNN has rated as one of the world's most beautiful cycling 🚲 routes, reaching the destination, Onomichi U2. In contrast to the winding stone steps in the city, this area felt orderly, as if stepping into a different world. Unlike the bustling vibe of a metropolis 🌃, Onomichi exudes a simple and unpretentious charm. While it might not appeal to those looking to shop for cosmetics and electronics, it’s a wonderful little town for those seeking to experience a slower pace of life.

This time, I had lunch at Onomichi Shopping Street and chose Senryo Ramen, ordering through the self-service kiosk 💻. I ordered a bowl of ramen with bean sprouts 🥬. The broth was oily and fragrant but not greasy, with a balanced soy sauce and fish flavor. The noodles were on the firmer side with a good chew 🍜, and the bean sprouts were crisp and added texture. The fried chicken was a large boneless thigh 🔥, with a thin, crispy skin and plenty of juice, served with a small amount of lettuce to cut through the richness 🥗. I also ordered a fried rice 🍚, which was slightly moist but well-balanced in flavor. The rice grains absorbed the broth and had a pleasant aroma, perfectly complementing the ramen and fried chicken. Senkoji Temple (千光寺) is perhaps Onomichi's most iconic landmark, perched near the summit of Mount Senkoji with views of the Onomichi Channel. It's one of a number temples in the vicinity that Onomichi is known for, but also joined by several nearby attractions at the top of Mount Senkoji inside Senkoji Park, including the Onomichi City Museum of Art and an observation platform at the top.

⛩️The torii gates floating in the sea are amazing! ⛩️ The scenery is completely different depending on the tide, so the way you enjoy them changes depending on when you go🌊 At low tide you can walk right under the torii gates, and at high tide they look like they're floating in the sea. One of Miyajima's charms is that there are lots of delicious things to eat♡ I recommend watching the high tide, eating a meal, climbing Mt. Misen, and then returning to watch the low tide☺️✨ A spot you definitely can't miss if you're sightseeing in Hiroshima! Upon arriving in Onomichi, the first thing that catches your eye is the extraordinary scenery unique to this town of hills and sea. As you climb the narrow alleys, you'll encounter old houses and cats popping out unexpectedly, making you feel as if you've stepped into a movie scene. On the way to Senkoji Temple, every view is picturesque, and leisurely walking while taking photos is truly enjoyable. From Senkoji Temple, you can overlook the Onomichi Channel, with its serene sea dotted with islands, leaving a lasting impression. The shopping street is lined with unique cafes and shops, perfect for a quick break. Additionally, Onomichi is famous for its ramen, with renowned restaurants scattered throughout the town.

Transportation: Take the train to JR Onomichi Station (Sanyo Main Line), then walk about 15 minutes to take the cable car uphill. Visit Time: June 2024 Onomichi is a small seaside town that might have once been a fishing village, but now it seems to have quite a bit of shipbuilding industry. Since it's not a major tourist hotspot, there aren't many people around. Occasionally, you might spot a few foreigners (noticeably non-Asian), and even the locals are sparse. To reach Senkoji Temple, you first need to pass through Hon-dori Shopping Street after leaving the station to take the cable car. Hon-dori Shopping Street has small alleys branching off on both sides—one side offers views of the railway, while the other side overlooks the port. The street has a somewhat Showa-era vibe, with buildings that are neither too new nor too old, and quite a few mixed-style structures combining Japanese and Western elements. The cable car runs every 15 minutes, with a small cabin. The ride is very short, lasting about three minutes, and it takes you to the cable car station at the top of the hill. From there, you can walk down the mountain along a small path. Along the way, there are signs with poems or verses, seemingly describing the scenery of Onomichi. As you descend, you'll arrive at Senkoji Temple, where you can hear the sound of wind chimes from afar. With the sea breeze and the chime sounds, it feels refreshingly cool. The entire temple is built on the mountainside, blending with the natural rocks at varying heights. One of Senkoji's famous sights is the bell tower "Kyo-on-ro" (Echo Tower), which has been selected by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan." However, you can't hear the bell being rung on-site, nor can you ring it yourself. The view from here is excellent, offering a bird's-eye view of the Onomichi Waterway and the distant Onomichi Bridge. The temple sells a wide variety of amulets, as well as numerous types of ema (wooden prayer plaques) and omikuji (fortune slips). There are also many different styles of omikuji to choose from.

Don’t miss Onomichi, a place full of hipster vibes, when visiting Hiroshima! This time we arranged a leisurely half-day tour, which is a paradise for cat lovers and a secret base for scenery lovers~ 🚡The trip starts from Onomichi Ropeway! It only takes a few minutes to walk from the bottom of the mountain to the cable car station. Take the Onomichi Cable Car all the way up and you can overlook the entire Onomichi city and the Seto Inland Sea. It's so relaxing. Although you can't always see a lot of cats, this time we only encountered 2 cats playing around, some lying on the wall, some hiding in the corner, as if they were playing hide-and-seek~ 🍮How can you miss the "Onomichi Pudding" during the dessert time! This pudding shop is extremely popular in Onomichi. The pudding that appeared in the game "Ryu ga Tomoko" is worth a try even if you are not a fan of Ryu ga Tomoko. The store offers a variety of flavors of pudding in glass bottles, including original, coffee, and matcha. The accompanying syrup is served in a fish-shaped container that is often used to hold sushi soy sauce, which is also very clever. The matcha flavor is quite strong, and I bought some to eat on the train on the way back. 🧁There are coffee shops and grocery stores along the way, many of which are converted from old houses, giving off a hipster vibe. Time flies by while you stroll around, take photos, and have a drink. ⏳The whole route takes about 2 to 3 hours to walk slowly. After the walk, you can leisurely drink a cup of coffee and enjoy the railway scenery, or go to the shopping street to eat the famous Onomichi ramen. The port located in Onomichi City today was first established in 1168 as a hub for rice transportation and international trade. Although the port no longer sees as much activity as it once did, it remains a cultural center of the city. Every April, the Onomichi Minato Matsuri, or Port Festival, attracts many participants and celebrates the city's rich history with food stalls, parades, and dance competitions.

Hiroshima, a town of slopes, sea, and cats 🐱 Unfortunately, since I visited in the middle of summer, I didn't see any cats during the day, but I heard there are many during cooler seasons 💕 My favorite town with a view of the sea. I spent about 4 hours taking the Senkoji Mountain Ropeway to the top, visiting Senkoji Temple, and walking down while taking photos 😊 (with a cafe break in between ☕️) On a sunny summer day, the view of the sea in the distance while descending the slopes and stairs was really wonderful ☺️ The view from the ropeway is in the 4th photo. The 5th photo is towards the Onomichi City Museum of Art 📸 The Seto Inland Sea could be seen far into the distance, and it was a spectacular view 🥹 If you want to see the cats, it might be better to visit during the cooler seasons 😊

Unlike the tourist waves in Kyoto or Tokyo, I would say this is one of the best cities to relax your mind. Onomichi is also known as the City of Literature and has been the inspiration for many movies and art games. If you're a frequent consumer of Japanese culture, why not take a pilgrimage to Onomichi? Another highly recommended activity in Onomichi is cycling. Onomichi's famous Shimanami Kaido is a paradise for cyclists. The Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi City and Imabari City, is Japan's first bike path that crosses a strait. All bridges are equipped with bike lanes. There are plenty of bike rental facilities, and even beginners can choose simpler routes. Bicycles can be rented in Onomichi and on various islands, allowing even beginners to enjoy the fun of cycling!

When I went to Ehime, I went on a road trip to the Shimanami Kaido, which I had always wanted to go to! There were people renting bicycles, so I'd like to try that next time. Due to time constraints, I couldn't go through, so I turned back halfway. I've been living in Japan for almost a year without realizing it. In addition to the well-known Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, I've also visited quite a few smaller cities. Here are some of my personal favorite small cities for those who are struggling to decide where to go (in no particular order) ⭕ Takamatsu Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku, and it was the first place I visited on my trip to Japan 10 years ago. It has a famous nickname as the hometown of udon noodles, so you can enjoy various kinds of udon here. Also, the triennial 'Setouchi Triennale' art festival is an event not to be missed, and from Takamatsu Port, it's very convenient to travel to treasure islands such as Shodoshima, Naoshima, and Teshima. ⭕ Kochi It could be said to be the most low-key capital city in the Shikoku region. This is the hometown of the anti-shogunate warrior Sakamoto Ryoma. During my half-day city walk in Kochi, I truly felt the city's tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, I particularly like Kochi's trams, which have super cute liveries. ⭕ Tokushima Tokushima is also a place I visited on my first trip to Japan. The Awa Dance is a local specialty here, and you must see it. Also, the Iya Valley is a great place to escape the summer heat. ⭕ Onomichi A small city facing Shikoku across the sea from Honshu, it has both mountains and sea, and cycling is very popular here. Cycling from Onomichi to Shikoku's 'Shimanami Kaido' is known as Japan's most beautiful cycling route. Ramen and oysters are local specialties here. Oh, and Yasujiro Ozu's famous work 'Tokyo Story' was also filmed in Onomichi. ⭕ Kanazawa The largest city in the Hokuriku region of Japan. It is also a city with a 'high gold content.' Ninety-nine percent of Japan's gold leaf is produced here, so you can buy various gold leaf products, including food and drinks containing gold leaf. Additionally, one of Japan's three great gardens, Kenrokuen, is also located in Kanazawa. ⭕ Saga Saga in Kyushu is often rated as one of the cities in Japan with the least presence. But after going to Saga, I fell in love with it. Saga's ramen and Wagyu beef are really delicious, and the key is that they are much cheaper than in big cities. A double portion of Saga beef for just over 5000 yen is incredibly tempting. ⭕ Hakodate I've been to Hakodate twice, once in autumn and once in winter. Compared to Sapporo, Hakodate is much more interesting. From Mount Hakodate, you can see the million-dollar night view, and Goryokaku Park is a treasure with beautiful scenery all year round.

Looking from the distance, the tide was a little low, so the road to the Kannon Hall was not a beautiful single road.
