Fukuoka Dessert Tour - Spring Seasonal Parfait at Traditional Tea House 'Iwaiya'
🍡I visited 'Iwaiya,' located at the entrance of Atago Shrine, a scenic spot in Fukuoka, to try their shaved ice. However, I didn't realize that shaved ice was a seasonal menu item. Unfortunately, I couldn't have it, but I was lucky enough to try their spring seasonal menu instead.
🍡(岩井屋) was established in 1689, originally serving as a humble inn (旅籠屋, Hatagoya) for shrine visitors. Later, it transformed into a tea house and has maintained its traditional tea house style for over 100 years. The interior features antique folk crafts and a hearth, creating a serene atmosphere. In spring, cherry blossoms 🌸, and in autumn, colorful leaves 🍁, enhance the beauty of the place.
🍡At this historic tea house with over 300 years of tradition, I tried their spring seasonal menu - the Spring Parfait (春パフェ). The highlight was the 'strawberry bean paste,' made without any water, using only the moisture from fresh strawberries and homemade strawberry jam. The combination of fresh strawberries, homemade strawberry bean paste, and slightly bitter matcha cream was absolutely delicious. Upon sitting down, I was served a traditional tea set with warm tea, a custom of Japanese tea houses.
🍡Iwaiya is renowned for its traditional desserts made with carefully selected red beans and rice cakes. Next time I visit, I must try their Iwai Mochi (いわい餅). It's said to have a unique flavor distinct from Dazaifu's Umegae Mochi, so I'm looking forward to it. I also plan to return in summer to try their Fireworks Shaved Ice 🎇. Interestingly, it's also known as a place for great coffee ☕️, so I want to try their siphon-brewed coffee with its deep flavor.
🍡Enjoying desserts at Iwaiya and then climbing up to Atago Shrine to view the Fukuoka cityscape—could there be a better date course?
