🗓️ Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Baoding, visit the governor’s office and ancient Lotus Pond
· Transport: Arrive at Baoding East Station or Baoding Station by high-speed train. Recommended to stay near Yuhua Road or Zhili Governor’s Office area, the old city center, within walking distance to attractions. Comfortable hotels cost US$18–27 per night.
· Afternoon: Visit the Zhili Governor’s Office (admission US$4.50). This was the office of the highest military and political official of Zhili Province during the Qing dynasty. Notable figures like Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang, and Yuan Shikai once worked here. The well-preserved complex, including the main hall and the “Gong Sheng Ming” archway, instantly transports you to the Qing officialdom.
· Evening: A short walk to the ancient Lotus Pond (admission US$4.50), one of China’s top 10 famous gardens. It has been a royal palace since the Jin dynasty. Lotus Pond Academy was once a northern academic center. In midsummer, the pond is full of lotus flowers and willows, with pavilions and towers showcasing the spacious and elegant style of northern gardens.
· Dinner: Head straight to Yonghua North Street or the Military Academy Square night market. Baoding nights must start with donkey meat sandwiches. Order “menzi meat,” and ask the vendor to pour a ladle of old broth marinade. The donkey meat is savory, menzi is chewy, and the sandwich is crispy. Pair it with tofu pudding or millet porridge. Around US$4 per person is top-notch.
Day 2: Full day at Baiyangdian, boating on the pearl of North China
· All day: Take a bus to Baiyangdian (about 1 hour). It’s the largest freshwater lake on the North China Plain, with endless lotus flowers and reed marshes. It’s also the hometown of the folk hero Little Soldier Zhang Ga.
· Main experience: At the dock, take a manually rowed boat (charter about US$22–30, can share with 4–6 people, much better value than speedboats). Cruise through the reed maze and lotus gardens. Visit the Lotus Flower Grand View Garden (admission US$7.50), home to hundreds of lotus varieties, with peak bloom in July and August. The Baiyangdian Cultural Garden (admission US$6) features the Yanling Team Memorial Hall, telling the waterborne anti-Japanese resistance story.
· Lunch: Eat at a farmhouse on the island, enjoying stewed mixed fish with flatbread. Fresh crucian carp and grass carp are slow-cooked over a wood fire in a large pot, with corn flatbreads lining the pot’s edge. The fish is tender, and the bread soaks up the broth. Around US$9 per person. Salted duck eggs are rich and a must-try.
· Evening: Return to the city and try beef flatbread. Two taels of beef with two taels of bread, clear broth soaking shredded flatbread and braised beef slices. The broth is light, the meat tender. Around US$4 per person.
Day 3: Visit Qing Western Tombs, explore local life
· Morning: Head to the Qing Western Tombs (about 1.5 hours by car, combined ticket US$16, focus on the Tai Tomb and Chong Tomb). This is the last imperial mausoleum cluster of the Qing dynasty, where emperors Yongzheng, Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Guangxu are buried. The nanmu wood hall at Tai Tomb and the underground palace at Chong Tomb are highlights. Fewer tourists than the Eastern Tombs, the pine and cypress forest is very peaceful.
· Noon: Eat Manchu cuisine in Yixian County, including steamed deer tail, flag sausage, and the eight big bowls. Around US$7 per person.
· Afternoon: Return to the city and stroll West Street. This is Baoding’s best-preserved old street, with a blend of Chinese and Western architecture in gray bricks and tiles. Known as “Zhili’s first street,” it lives up to its name. Buy Baoding’s three treasures: iron balls, noodle paste, and “Chun Bu Lao” (spring never ages).
· Evening: Behind Zhonglou Department Store, enjoy freshly roasted sugar-fried chestnuts and snowflake curd, a sweet childhood memory for Baoding locals. For dinner, try crispy pork knuckle wraps, a Hebei cuisine specialty with crispy outside and tender inside.
Day 4: Mancheng Han tombs, leisurely return
· Morning: Visit the Mancheng Han tombs (about 40 minutes by car, admission including cable car US$12). This is the tomb of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan in the Western Han dynasty, and his wife Dou Wan. Famous artifacts like the gold-threaded jade burial suit and the Changxin Palace lantern (national treasures now in the provincial museum) were unearthed here. The tomb chambers are carved inside the mountain, cool and mysterious. It’s one of China’s top 100 archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
· Noon: Return to the city and eat a bowl of Bai Yunzhang steamed buns, a century-old brand known for large, juicy lamb-filled buns, on par with Tianjin’s famous Goubuli buns. Pack Huai Mao pickles or Ma’s old chicken shop roast chicken as souvenirs.
· Afternoon: If time allows, visit Baoding Museum (free) or Daci Pavilion (admission US$1.50), Baoding’s ancient architectural landmarks. Then head back.
🍜 Baoding must-try foods
· Donkey meat sandwich: Baoding’s spiritual totem. A warm round sandwich stuffed with donkey meat and menzi, soaked in old broth marinade. One bite brings your soul back. Look for old shops like “Yan’s” and “Old Donkey Head.”
· Beef flatbread: Clear broth with rich flavor, hand-torn flatbread soaked in beef broth, tender meat and fresh soup.
· Baiyangdian stewed mixed fish with flatbread: Slow-cooked over wood fire in an iron pot, the bottom half of the bread soaks up the fish broth. The simplest taste of the water town.
· Bai Yunzhang steamed buns: Century-old halal buns with thin skin and large filling, lamb filling oozes juice with every bite.
· Snowflake curd: Traditional shaved ice topped with red beans, raisins, and preserved fruit, a childhood flavor for Baoding locals.
💡 Money-saving and tips
· Transport tips: Taxi starting fare in the city is US$1.05. The old city is walkable for sightseeing and dining. Tourist buses or carpooling are available to Baiyangdian, Qing Western Tombs, and Mancheng Han tombs. Three days of major transport plus carpooling costs about US$30.
· Accommodation: Near Yuhua Road is most convenient, close to all attractions. Weekend hotel price increases are small. Off-season, US$18 per night can get a comfortable stay.
· Baiyangdian tips: Always take boats from official docks. Don’t trust roadside low-price offers. Negotiate charter prices and tour times in advance. Rowboats offer a much better experience than speedboats.
· Best season: Lotus blooms in July and August, but it’s hot and humid. September and October have clear, cool weather, ideal for sightseeing.
Baoding is the sizzling aroma of donkey meat in the sandwich, the deep red lacquer pillars of the governor’s office, and a lone boat in the reed marshes of Baiyangdian. We hope you discover the bold spirit of Zhili and the lingering taste of history in this underrated ancient city.
