Onsen with a Breathtaking View of Lake Tōya
Lake Toya is a must-visit destination in Hokkaido during winter. It not only boasts a magnificent scenery but also features one of the world`s most unique natural occurrences - its lake never freezes during winter. This is due to the stratovolcano, Mount Usu, around the lake. Very interesting isn't it?
There are many things to do in Lake Toya, and the best decision we made was to go for Onsen. We have Onsen in Singapore but it's an entirely different experience to do it in winter. When temperature dips to sub zero, the cold never truly leaves you, regardless of the number of layers you wear. Onsen becomes a source of warmth, comfort and relief. We felt so so blessed then, the feeling was indescribable.
Things to note: There are public and private Onsen. Strict rules must be followed at the public hot spring baths - tattoos, photography and the use of bath towels are prohibited. For private ones, there are no restrictions. We stayed at Toyako Manseikaku. It has the perfect view of the lake and a public Onsen. We also made frequent trips to their in-house café as the views from there are exceptional! Starting from SGD$200 per night, guests can enjoy their Onsen for free and complimentary buffet breakfast for two. If you prefer privacy, you can also book a private spa at Nonokaze Resort for just SGD$33 per 50 minutes.

Strolling along Lake Toya
#celebratewithtrip
Lake Toya was born more than 110,000 years ago following a huge volcanic eruption. We took our time for a relaxing long stroll along the lake. There are a lot of very nice modern sculptures along the way.
Lake Toya (洞爺湖) is one of the best hot spring towns in Japan for budget travelers. The combination of many free hot spring facilities, cheap bus routes and some super cheap accommodation makes the place stand out from the others.

Nice local ramen restaurant. We stopped by Lake Toya for lunch so we just tried this. They have the most common ramen on their menu. Simple, great flavors and good service.

Stunning views from Lake Toya Nonokaze
Lake Toya is argubly the most scenic spa resort in Hokkaido. With its paranomic views of the scenic Lake Toya from the upscale hotel resort, its well worth splurging for a magical night here just to have a wonderful experience in Lake Toya, Japan.
There are both Japanese and Western style rooms available at the resort and we chose the Western style room which comes with a king bed. If you choose the Japanese style, it comes with a futon bed.
We booked a free shuttle from JR Sapporo Station to get to the hotel and it was relatively fuss free to get there.
The hotel restaurant has wonderful views of Lake Toya as well while you dine from the restaurant, which is very relaxing.

October Hokkaido Maple Leaf Tour, Lake Toya.
With my parents choosing a chartered car from Noboribetsu to Toyako in the afternoon, the sun and the breeze blowing away the fog, the entire Toyako area is very quiet and clean, maybe the guests staying at the hot spring hotel have not arrived yet. .
Tong Yee Lake is the northernmost non-frozen lake in Japan. It will not freeze in winter, cherry blossoms in spring, fireworks in summer, autumn is the season I come to, the scenery is like a painting, the most suitable for sitting Cruises to see the red maple landscape on both sides of the river, as well as the good weather to reach the distance like the twin brothers of Mt. Fuji in the mountains, but unfortunately there is no snow in the late autumn.

湖光山色:漫遊北海道洞爺湖的詩意時光
Stepping into Lake Toya, you are greeted by the tranquil and clear waters, like a giant flawless mirror reflecting the surrounding green mountains and the blue sky. The lake's surface ripples gently with the breeze, like a soft whisper of nature, making you let go of mundane thoughts and immerse in this serene environment. In the distance, Mount Yotei rises majestically into the clouds, imposing and magnificent, facing the lake and forming a stunning natural painting.
Walking along the lake, you occasionally see small boats drifting leisurely, breaking the surface of the water without disturbing the peace, adding a touch of poetry. The cool breeze brings the refreshing scent of the lake, invigorating your senses, and the birds' songs seem to welcome every traveler. As the sun sets, the lake is tinged with a soft orange-red hue, and the mountain shadows change with the light, creating a dreamy scene that makes it hard to leave. At this moment, time seems to stand still, allowing you to deeply connect with nature. The beauty of Lake Toya, like poetry and painting, leaves an unforgettable impression.

Toyako Lake Memorial Hall
Toyako Lake Tourist Information Center is right next to the bus stop. I went inside for a visit and it felt like a memorial hall. The first floor displays the living environment and pictures of Hokkaido residents. The second floor is divided into two exhibition areas. One area showcases the long table used during the G8 summit held in Hokkaido, the resting places for the leaders, and the flags of the participating countries. The other area mainly introduces pictures of Hokkaido's mineral resources. By taking your time to look around, you can get a general understanding of Hokkaido!

Ranking of Hokkaido attractions in September
After arriving in Hokkaido, I chose a one-day tour of Hokkaido with Ctrip, participating in the Lake Toya route and the Furano route, while I went to Otaru by myself.
Advantages: No need to research complex routes for the one-day tour, and it is quite cost-effective.
Recommended ranking:
Otaru Aquarium, Shukutsu Observatory, Otaru Canal
Boating on Lake Toya
Lake Toya Observatory
Lake Shikotsu, Cape Chikyu
Noboribetsu Hell Valley, not recommended in summer, quite boring
Biei's flower fields in late August are already desolate, and the area is super small, not much to see
Blue Pond, a spot where you just take a photo and it's over, not worth a special trip
Shirahige Falls, same situation as above
Farm Tomita in Furano, although the flowers have withered, the overall layout is exquisite, and the lavender-related items in the shops are also interesting. Overall, it is more decent than Biei.
Summary: On a good weather day, you can see Shakotan Blue at Otaru Aquarium, no need to spend a long time going to Cape Kamui
Regretfully, I couldn't go to the Blue Cave due to strong waves
Next time I come to Hokkaido in summer, I will stay in Otaru for one night. The one-day tour was too rushed, and the shops on the commercial street closed at 6 PM. I didn't get to visit the music box shop or Kitaichi Glass, which is a pity.
Food: Went to Nemuro Hana, super cost-effective
Went to Tokusho, highly recommended, excellent quality, low price
Also had yakitori, couldn't get into Nemuro Hana on the first day, so I randomly found a place on the street, and every skewer was delicious
Sapporo beer is so good, the foam is like cream, and it doesn't have the bitterness of domestic beer. I had a big glass with every meal. Compared to Otaru whiskey, I prefer it more.
Otaru Sankaku Market stops taking orders at 4:30 PM. I randomly found a place on the street and had a seafood bowl, which was also good. No need to specifically check in at a particular place!!

#japantrip Pit stop along the way to sapporo during winter in feb. The lake is so vast and amazing with a small island in the center. This lake doesnt freeze over during winter. There is a rope way to the top and a free visitor center of sorts to view the history of this area. In the town there is also a bear zoo to view the bears. Overall a good stop over for photos and a lunch break.

A fireworks spectacle that can be enjoyed without stepping outside—the Lake Toya Fireworks Festival!
Lake Toya is a lake formed by volcanic eruption, and the geothermal vents at the bottom of the lake keep the water flowing all year round, so it never freezes in winter. It is famous for its volcanic hot springs, and you can get there with just a few steps from the hot spring town. Taking pictures by the lake is always beautiful!
On clear summer days, when the night of the fireworks festival arrives, people dress up carefully, meet up with two or three friends, stroll along the riverbank, and slowly enjoy the fireworks filling the sky!
The fireworks soar into the sky, drawing brilliant arcs in the night, and from any angle, you can witness the stunning spectacle of ice and fire colliding!

Toya Illumination
#thingstodo We deliberately made a stop at Lake Toya while traveling from Hakodate. The permanent night illumination, unlike Christmas lights, created a perfect blend with the lights and cold weather, making it easily visible from a distance.

Journey to Toya: Nature's Embrace
#2024wish
As I boarded the train in Sapporo, excitement surged through me for the journey to Toyako. The scenic ride unfolded like a painting, with lush landscapes and distant mountains painting the backdrop. Arriving at Toyako, Lake Toya revealed its serene beauty, surrounded by verdant hills. The tranquil waters mirrored the skies, creating a mesmerizing sight. Exploring the lakeside town, I discovered quaint shops and enjoyed local delicacies. As dusk settled, the view of Mount Yotei casting its shadow on the lake left an indelible memory. Reflecting on that unforgettable day, I vowed, "In 2024, I wish to go there again," yearning for the serene embrace of Lake Toya and the scenic train journey that etched itself into my heart.

Lake Toya - One-day Stop
A good place for onsen and hiking. The Toyako Onsen Bus Terminal serves as a transport node in this town to other places. It can be reached from Toya JR Station by bus/taxi. It costed me Y340 and the bus ride took about 20 min. There is limited bus service daily, so do check out the bus schedule. Google maps gives good recommendation of the travel route, cost and timing.
There was no bus service available to the Usuzan Ropeway as I was there in end-Apr (end of the "winter" period). The only option was to book a taxi from the hotel reception, and then at the Usuzan ticket counter for the return trip. The taxi trip will cost about Y2000 one-way.
It is also worth visiting the Kompirayama and Nishiyama Walking Trails for hiking. You get to see the devastation from the last volcanic eruption that was preserved.
There are also other attractions (that I didn't explore) such as Lake Toya Cruise and there also many sculptures along the lake shore for art enthusiasts.
Featured locations: Usuzan Ropeway, Kompirayama and Nishiyama Walking Trails

Lake Toya Cruise and pier
I am impressed with the cool surrounding. Superb for picture . The cruise took around 1 hour. Taking in afternoon of a winter is so chilling but it’s good feel. I was told by locals that this lake will not be frozen because of volcano nearby.
The cruise boats run to the middle of the lake and the four islands that make up Nakajima. Passenger can look out at Mt. Yotei, Showa Shinzan and Mt. Usu and the magnificent surrounding countryside.
As it’s winter time, I don’t get to take another cruise which should have fireworks but this is good for me. Note that there is cafe in the cruise . A coffee while witness the view in chilling weather. Relaxing
