Find Your Next Poetic Muse: Discover Inspiration in Suzhou's Timeless Ping Jiang Lu
Wandering through Ping Jiang Lu is like stepping into a living poem. This ancient street in Suzhou, dating back over 800 years, is a haven for those seeking both beauty and inspiration. Lined with traditional white-washed buildings, curved stone bridges, and quiet canals, Ping Jiang Lu transports you to a simpler time, where life unfolds at a slower pace, offering endless moments for reflection.
As you walk along the cobblestone path, you’ll hear the soft sounds of water flowing beside you. The narrow canal, dotted with wooden boats gliding peacefully by, feels like a scene lifted from a classic Chinese painting. This setting, with its understated elegance, evokes tranquility—a perfect backdrop for contemplating life, love, or the passage of time.
The street is flanked by charming teahouses, art galleries, and quaint bookstores, each one a potential spark for creativity. Stop for a cup of tea at one of these centuries-old teahouses, and you might find yourself gazing out at the water, imagining the stories of the people who once lived in this very spot. You can even browse through local poetry books at the cozy bookstores or admire the artwork that captures the spirit of Suzhou’s past and present.
Ping Jiang Lu is also home to various traditional performances, including Kunqu opera, one of China’s oldest and most revered forms of theater. The melodious voices and graceful movements of the performers bring to life the rich cultural history that has long thrived in Suzhou. These performances are a true reminder of the city's deep artistic roots, capable of igniting creative thoughts as you witness age-old stories unfold.
As the sun sets, the street’s lanterns begin to glow, casting a soft, warm light over the canal, creating an atmosphere that feels timeless. It’s in these moments, surrounded by history and beauty, that Suzhou’s Ping Jiang Lu reveals itself not just as a destination, but as a muse, waiting to inspire your next poem.
Whether you're capturing the elegance of a passing boat, the quiet charm of a hidden garden, or the poignant scenes from an evening stroll, Ping Jiang Lu is a poetic sanctuary. Here, every step you take is a journey through both history and inspiration. So if you're searching for a place that sparks creativity, let the peaceful, ancient streets of Ping Jiang Lu in Suzhou be the canvas for your next poem.

Life advice: Before leaving Suzhou, make sure to visit Pingjiang Road
One road, one city | Comprehensive travel guide to Pingjiang Road, Suzhou❗️
🏯 Pingjiang Road carries half of Suzhou's history. As a classic epitome of the ancient city of Suzhou, the Pingjiang Historical and Cultural District showcases the Jiangnan water town style with white walls, black tiles, small bridges, flowing water, and old-style residences.
🌊 The Pingjiang Road district is built along the Pingjiang River, and most of the surrounding alleys are historic lanes. It is famous for its unique style of 'parallel water and land, adjacent river and street.' If you come to Suzhou, this Pingjiang Road, known as one of 'China's Top Ten Historical and Cultural Streets,' is definitely worth a visit!
📍 Location: Pingjiang Road Historical District, Gusu District, Suzhou
⌚ Duration: About 3 hours
🚇 Metro: Get off at Xiangmen Station on Line 1, exit from Exit 3, and walk about 300 meters to reach the south entrance of Pingjiang Road.
🚍 Bus: Take bus No. 5 to Suzhou Museum Station, then walk to the north entrance.
🌈 Suggested travel route:
Start from the north end of Pingjiang Road ➡️ Pipa Language Pingtan Teahouse North Pavilion ➡️ Take a boat at the sculling boat dock ➡️ Huxiangshi Bridge ➡️ Dingxiang Lane ➡️ Suzhou Check-in Wall ➡️ Visitor Center
🌟 Recommended experiences:
1️⃣ Take a hand-rowed boat to cruise the Pingjiang River. Walk about 200 meters from the north entrance, and there are black awning boats available. The round-trip ticket is 40 yuan per person. Although the black awning boat may be a bit cold, the jelly-like clear river water is mesmerizing, and the boat seems to float lightly on the water. It's definitely not to be missed, highly recommended!
2️⃣ Visit cultural and creative shops. Pingjiang Road is lined with cultural and creative shops, and small items like hand-painted bookmarks and fans are very interesting, priced around 30-40 yuan. It's a great choice to take home without regrets.
3️⃣ Enjoy tea and listen to the pipa. When in Suzhou, you must listen to Mr. Wu's 'Slow Sound.' Ticket prices are divided into three tiers: 58 yuan, 88 yuan, and 128 yuan, with noon and evening sessions. Tickets can be purchased online or offline, and it is recommended to choose seats offline.
4️⃣ Taste local Suzhou snacks. Must-try items include:
📍 Plum Blossom Cake, 8 yuan each, sweet and soft, with glutinous rice balls on top paired with osmanthus and red dates, red bean paste at the bottom, and a crispy crust. Highly recommended.
📍 Su-style Osmanthus Sugar Porridge, 9 yuan per bowl, warm and not greasy, very comfortable after eating.
📍 Jasmine Tea Ice Cream, 25 yuan each, although slightly expensive, the visual effect is full marks! The slightly bitter freeze-dried jasmine flowers perfectly balance the sweetness of the ice cream.
📷 Photo spots:
1️⃣ Huxiangshi Bridge and Tongli Bridge: Standing on the bridge, looking at Pingjiang Road on both sides, the scenery is charming, an excellent photo spot!
2️⃣ Opposite Pingjiang Road.
3️⃣ Suzhou Check-in Wall, with a background of the iconic wall with the big characters 'Suzhou.'
🍱 Food recommendations:
1️⃣ Bamboo Tube Milk Tea is available in almost every beverage shop, recommended for photo-taking.
2️⃣ Imperial Secret Chicken Feet, very tasty.
3️⃣ Peach Blossom Spring snacks, such as Plum Blossom Cake, Su-style Noodles, Osmanthus Red Bean Small Balls, etc., are all local delicacies.
🌟 Travel tips:
1️⃣ It is recommended to visit during the day and take a hand-rowed boat to enjoy the beautiful scenery on both sides of the Pingjiang River.
2️⃣ Walk into the alleys to get closer to the daily life of Suzhou people.
3️⃣ The Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum are nearby and can be visited along the way.
4️⃣ Dingxiang Lane, where Dai Wangshu's 'Rain Lane' is located, is quiet and beautiful, a good place to find peace in the midst of the hustle and bustle.

The Coolest Cat Cafe in Suzhou
I was strolling down Pinjiang Road, soaking up the old-timey vibes of the town, when suddenly, I stumbled upon the coolest surprise ever – a cat cafe!
And let me tell you, it was like stepping into a feline paradise. Every cat in there was a total knockout – so graceful, so elegant, and just oozing with charm.
But here's the best part: the owner of the cafe was like a cat parade master! Up on the second floor, they'd strut those fabulous felines right by the window, putting on a show for all the passersby. It was like a kitty fashion show. Talk about a purr-fectly fun time!
This is the coolest cat cafe I've ever been to! They have the most amazing cats. Definitely worth stopping by for a coffee and some kitty cuddles.

A day trip to Suzhou
Exploring the narrow lanes and historic streets of Suzhou's old town, such as Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street, offers a glimpse into traditional Chinese life. You'll find quaint tea houses, artisan workshops, and local eateries tucked away in these atmospheric neighborhoods. Don't miss the Suzhou Museum designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei, which showcases both ancient and contemporary art.

Ahhh! I captured the photo of a lifetime on Pingjiang Road!!!
"A single Pingjiang Road, half of Gusu City," this saying really hits the nail on the head. This summer, I must make a trip to the south of the Yangtze River🍃
Wearing Hanfu on Pingjiang Road is an experience you must try. As you walk along the stone-paved road dressed in Hanfu, it's as if you've traveled back to ancient times, with every step filled with poetry, truly stunning!
Then, take a ride on a hand-rowed boat, gently gliding on the water's surface, feeling the caress of the breeze, and admiring the picturesque scenery on both sides of the river, everything is so pleasant.
Don't forget to look at the blooming flowers along the way, they add a splash of splendid color to this southern region.🌸 And this place is really perfect for taking photos, any random shot turns out great, and I captured the photo of a lifetime here!!!

Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, this is the most Jiangnan-style place!
'A single Pingjiang Road, half of Gusu city.' The more than 1600 meters long Pingjiang Road basically continues the street layout since the Tang and Song dynasties. It's like a thread-bound book, recording the history and culture of Suzhou. The Pingjiang Historic and Cultural District, to which it belongs, has 1 World Cultural Heritage site, 20 cultural relics protection units of various levels, 45 controlled preservation buildings, and 70 newly discovered cultural relics sites identified in the general survey, known as the 'open-air museum of Jiangnan culture without walls'. Whitewashed walls with black tiles, stone-paved roads, small bridges over flowing water next to people's homes. In the Pingjiang Historic and Cultural District, you can wave a Suzhou fan, listen to a piece of Pingtan; or boat on the river, or stroll through the streets and alleys. Where to experience Jiangnan? Here is 'the most Jiangnan'.

Hot roasted milk in winter 🍼🥛
#foodies
This is a small cute shop that located at the entrance of the Pingjiang road, Suzhou!! Strolling in this area during winter time, I would recommend you to buy a cup of hot roasted milk to keep your body and hand warm while enjoying this over 1000 years road + buildings!!
A must mention, the owner of the shop is SUPER friendly and talkative where it makes us feel welcomed all the time👍🏻👍🏻
If you would like to take some instagrammable picture, top up some money to buy the cup decor on top of the drink and afterwards, you can keep it as a souvenir as well🍶

Pingjiang Road in Suzhou like a Painting🇨🇳
#cherryblossom2024 🌸
The travel in Suzhou has a great aftertaste, and if you don't listen to my true feelings, I feel like entering Suzhou all morning, with eyes full of Jiangnan. The garden bridges and towers, water smoke alleys and alleys, Wu Zhao Pingtan, and all of them look like drunken Jiangnan. No wonder the ancients were all vying to praise Suzhou! If you only have two days and one night, then follow this attack, go for a run to Pingjiang Road, blow the night breeze of Shantang Street, and feel the city of Gusu in Tang and Song poetry~

Ancient Ping Jiang Road in Suzhou🧳
#chinatrip
Ping Jiang Road is a famous ancient and historical street that located in the Gusu District, Suzhou. From the south Song Dynasty, the buildings, blocks, rivers, stone bridges across the road have been well-preserved until today and walking here, it feels like you are walking into the daily life of the ancient time.
If you are travelling to the Suzhou, this is one of the top tourist spot I would highly recommend as there are a lot of small stalls, restaurants selling local foods. You can also enjoy the Kun Operal and Pintan (storytelling and ballad Singing in Suzhou dialect) while enjoying cups of Chinese Tea. For those who like photo taking, remember to rent the chinese traditional clothes in Song Dynasty, and take the picture in the nook and corner of the street.

Lazybones who can't understand complicated strategies, please come in
Lazybones who can't understand complicated strategies, please come in💢||| I chose these four locations because they are close to each other, near Suzhou Station, surrounded by subways, and convenient for transportation. There's everything for eating, drinking, and shopping, and a budget of one to two hundred yuan is enough. (For those like me who arrive at Suzhou Station🚄 and are on a one-day tour, I suggest copying the order directly, so you don't have to backtrack.)
1️⃣ Xiyuan Temple
Transportation: Take a taxi from Suzhou Station to Xiyuan Temple💰12🚗
Time: Try to arrive before 9 o'clock⌛️ so there won't be too many people eating noodles at Xiyuan Temple, and it's also better to feed the cats as they haven't eaten much yet.
Tickets: 💰5R, scan the code at the entrance to buy tickets, no reservation needed, if you want a paper ticket you can go to the ticket window.
Strategy: At the entrance, there are grandmas selling cat snacks and grandpas selling calligraphy fans. Enter and receive three incense sticks, go straight to the Hall of Heavenly Kings on the right to light the incense, the specific method can be seen on the sign. Exit the Hall of Heavenly Kings and turn left to eat vegetarian noodles🍜, order at the entrance, get a ticket, then queue up for noodles. The place to get peace charms and dragon ropes is in the Sutra Copying Pavilion opposite the Lake Center Pavilion.
Cost: Guanyin noodles💰15+ peace charm💰20/piece + fan💰10
2️⃣ Shuangta Market
Transportation: Take a taxi directly from Xiyuan Temple💰13🚗
Time: Recommended before 12 o'clock, to solve lunch
Tickets: None
Strategy: Half of the market is a vegetable market, cold dishes, and cultural and creative stalls, the other half is a street with open-flame snacks. There are two sizes of plum drunk shrimp🦐, the small one is 48 for half a pound about 4-5 pieces, the large one is 68 for half a pound about 2-3 pieces, poached chicken is 25/box, all sweet and very fresh. Nuojiji pastry is about 20/box on average, and the dessert tofu pudding is about 18/serving on average.
Cost: Plum drunk shrimp💰49+ poached chicken💰25+ taro mochi green dumpling tofu pudding💰18
3️⃣ Pingjiang Road
Transportation: Two-minute walk from Shuangta Market, just cross a road🚶
Time: Go straight after lunch, just in time to digest
Tickets: None
Strategy: There are many cultural and creative shops, each with its own characteristics. The most popular foods are plum blossom cakes and chicken foot corners. There are two 'Suzhou' character walls, located at 68 and 82 Pingjiang Road respectively.
Cost: Water💰3 (actually, there is drinking water available)
4️⃣ Ou Garden
Transportation: Five-minute walk east from Pingjiang Road🚶
Time: Try to arrive before 4 pm, entry stops at 5 pm, and the garden closes at 5:30 pm
Tickets: 💰20R, no reservation needed, tickets can be bought on the platform or on-site
Strategy: The garden is quite large, with many varieties of flowers, plants, and trees, and it's very suitable for wearing Hanfu and taking photos. If possible, it's recommended to follow along with a senior tour group to listen in, as you can learn a lot of interesting history, and the garden also has recommended tour routes marked.
Cost: 💰0
Duration: 7 hours
Equipment: 14plus original images straight out

20 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls When Visiting Suzhou in March
1️⃣ It's currently 2-15°C in Suzhou🌡️, with significant temperature differences between day and night due to the late spring cold. Remember to bring warm clothes🧥
2️⃣ For Suzhou gardens, besides the Humble Administrator's Garden, you can also visit the Couple's Retreat Garden and the Master of Nets Garden this season. The plum and magnolia blossoms are just right🌸
3️⃣ If it's your first time taking a night tour🌃 of the gardens, I recommend the Master of Nets Garden, which features live Kunqu opera performances.
4️⃣ You must book the Suzhou Museum in advance!! It's currently by timed reservation, at least 2 days ahead!🕐
5️⃣ The Suzhou Museum is closed on Mondays, and entry stops at 4 pm. Opening hours are from 9 am to 5 pm🕐
6️⃣ Pingjiang Road is next to the Humble Administrator's Garden, a hotspot for gourmet food🍜. To be honest, the bamboo tube milk tea is just for good photos.
7️⃣ On Pingjiang Road, you can take a ride on a sculling oared boat for 40r/person💰, with the trip lasting about half an hour🕐. I recommend going at dusk when the lights and shadows of the oars create the most romantic atmosphere.
8️⃣ Teacher Wu Liangying's Suzhou Pingtan can be found at the 'Pipa Language Pingtan Teahouse' on Pingjiang Road, with 5 shows in the afternoon and 3 in the evening. You need to queue on-site to choose the showtime and seats. If you're in a hurry, I suggest going early to book⚠️
9️⃣ Next to the 'Suzhou' log on Pingjiang Road is the Seven Percent Sweet. You can directly navigate there🧭
1️⃣0️⃣ For night views🌃 on Shantang Street, it's best to arrive around 5 pm🕐, as dusk is the most beautiful.
1️⃣1️⃣ Shantang Street is free, and it's a 3-minute walk🕐 from Exit 3 of Shantang Street on Subway🚇 Line 2.
1️⃣2️⃣ Suzhou doesn't have an airport🈚️. Suzhou Station is in the city center, closest to the Humble Administrator's Garden, Suzhou Museum, and Pingjiang Road.
1️⃣3️⃣ The ancient towns around Suzhou are a bit far from the city center, but Mudu Ancient Town and Tongli Ancient Town are accessible by subway🚇.
1️⃣4️⃣ If you're visiting the ancient towns, I suggest setting aside a whole day🕐. You can stay in the town and I recommend taking a covered boat🚢.
1️⃣5️⃣ When visiting Suzhou, I recommend cycling. Buy a 'Suzhou Hand-drawn Cycling Map' to experience the local atmosphere🎆.
1️⃣6️⃣ If you want to eat vegetarian noodle dishes in Suzhou, I recommend going to Xiyuan Temple, with prices at 10/15r💰 per bowl.
1️⃣7️⃣ For a proper meal🍜, I suggest going to Qian Yuman. A nostalgic restaurant near Shantang Street, it's a rising hotspot with must-try dishes:
✅ Signature Bamboo Net Duck
✅ Tri-color Shrimp Tofu
✅ Grandma's Braised Egg and Pork Knuckle
✅ Peach Blossom Ten Miles Wine
1️⃣8️⃣ Eslite Bookstore📖 is at Jinji Lake and has Suzhou's most beautiful staircase.
1️⃣9️⃣ For Suzhou cuisine🍜, I recommend going to the Shuangta Market, a popular food market with lots of delicious and affordable options.
2️⃣0️⃣ For travel, I recommend using the subway🚇, especially on weekends and holidays when Suzhou can really get congested.

Suzhou Trip ~ Strategy Edition
📍📍📍 Four attractions in two days and one night: Pingjiang Road (1-5), Humble Administrator's Garden (6-8), Xiyuan Temple (9-10), Shantang Street (11-13)
✔️Pingjiang Road is full of snack streets and boutiques, a combination of hustle and tranquility. Many young ladies dress in very Jiangnan style for photos.📷
✔️Walking along Pingjiang Road is the Humble Administrator's Garden, which has a history of almost 500 years. The buildings in the courtyard are very distinctive. If you encounter a tour guide, you can listen to the stories about the garden.
✔️The next day, take a taxi to Xiyuan Temple. It's amazing that your heart calms down as soon as you arrive at the temple. It's very suitable for office workers who are always in the workplace. The outside world is too noisy, here you can feel a tranquility that is completely different from usual.
✔️Walking along Xiyuan Temple, you will reach Shantang Street, which is full of special snacks and souvenirs. After the lights on both sides of the waterfront are turned on at night, it completely conforms to my impression of the Jiangnan water town~
Finally, if you have time, I also recommend going to the Suzhou Museum and listening to the Suzhou Pingtan by Teacher Wu

the surroundings are also classic.
The Lion Grove is one of the four major gardens in Suzhou, don't miss the blooming wintersweet and the beautiful glazed flower windows;
The collision of modern and classical in Cang Street, there are both top-stream waist-down girls and the beautiful water rhyme of Gusu with few people;
The Couple's Retreat Garden is one of the eight major gardens in Suzhou, small and exquisite, the meaning of "a perfect match" attracts many couples to take pictures;
Dongyuan is free to feed black swans and is more popular with locals.

A slice of the Venice of the East 🛶🌿✨
Pingjiang Road, 平江路 is one of the best preserved historical street in Suzhou, dating back to the South Song Dynasty. With water canals, bridges, old architecture and cobbled pathways, it retained the characteristics of the classical Jiangnan water village style. In 2005, the street received the Asia Pacific Heritage Award by UNESCO for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Pingjiang Road is pedestrian and narrow, but yet such a charming place to visit in the heart of old Suzhou!
What to do at Pingjiang Road 👇🏼
➡️ Walk along the road and appreciate the beauty of old Chinese architecture and water canals.
➡️ Go on a boat ride 🛶 I found it lovely that the oarsman also sings traditional songs whilst rowing the boat for tourists 🕊
➡️ Try the local cuisine! There are a lot of restaurants around with delish Suzhounese dishes 🍽 as well as local snacks.
➡️ Lots of shops for souvenirs and silk products! Jiangsu province is well-known for its silk production. During Ming and Qing dynasties, high quality products were crafted by silk weavers in Suzhou for royal families. You’ll definitely spot so many of the shops there selling silk dresses, scarfs… etc
➡️ Perfect place to capture glimpses of old China on 📸
How to go 👉🏼 Take metro to Lindun Lu, 临顿路or Xiangmen 相门 🚇 station (both on line 1). It’s located between these stations and takes about 10 mins by walk to reach from either.

Beautiful lighting at night falls
Pingjiang Road can be considered as Suzhou Old Town in miniature. When night falls, tourists can taste local specialties in the snack shops, appreciate old-fashioned houses on the riverside with warm lights and listen to Suzhou Pingtan in the old teahouses. Although you cannot understand what the performers sing, you will be addicted to the soft singing in Suzhou dialect, which give people a peaceful feeling.
Food & Restaurants - many restaurants located along the canals giving you a view of the boats passing by
Shopping - snacks and souvenirs shops are located along this stretch of road too.

Pingjiang Road
Suzhou, a city west of Shanghai, is known for its canals, bridges and classical gardens. When travelling to Suzhou, I believe Pingjiang Road should definitely be on your sightseeing list. Pingjiang Road, historically known as Shiquan Li, is a street and historic district in Gusu District, northeastern Suzhou, China. It is a well-preserved area and is part of the so-called Old Town of Suzhou. Pingjiang road is packed with cute and cozy shops, bars and restaurants and some local food specialties. There are plenty of photo opportunities- in fact, you will come across a lot of traditional wedding photoshoots while walking down the street! This is a beautiful place and definitely a must see!

What kind of Shops are on Pingjiang road 🍵
While walking along this road called Pingjiang Lu, there were a bunch of different shops and different stores on either side of the road in which you could check out if you needed to. One of these shops that I went to was this tea shop where you can try out different types of tea made with flowers with fruits and which would smell amazing. So I was able to stop there and try some nice tea and then I moved on to other places.
However walking along this road he would see so many other shops that aren’t necessarily restaurants but you can see shops where they sell art where you can buy decorations jewelry souvenirs and much more.

🏮Venice of the East🏮
Dubbed the ‘Venice of the East’, historic Suzhou is known for its ancient canals and many UNESCO listed gardens. It is easy to spend a weekend wandering through the old stone temples, riding boats down the canals or visiting the 9 heritage listed gardens 🌸
Located 30 minutes from Shanghai via bullet train, the old centre of the town is preserved and still resembles it’s time in history when poets and artists would flock to the area for inspiration.
Another thing to do in Suzhou is eat, eat, eat! The cuisine is seasonal, which means the dishes available in autumn would be different in winter. A food tour is highly recommended!
