A well managed forest and lake section of the Shiretoko National Park. Managed parking for 500 yen, sign in for the hour long wander around the lakes area on well defined path.
First up is a good ranger talk, mandatory, about bears and sightings and what to do and not to do. Good English language version.
Had rained overnight, so plenty of opportunity to get mud on your boots for an authentic look of a forest tramp.
Lakes are scenic, and the final portion of the track is a raised boardwalk. This had electric edging to prevent any bear incursions.
The round the lake walk attracted a small fee. If you just wanted to do the raised boardwalk that was free.
We did not saw bears but did find deer happily dining on the local vegetation. From the board walk there were great views back to the mountains and across too the Ohkohsk sea.

Let's Learn About Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage Site in Hokkaido!!
Shiretoko is a peninsula that juts out into the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido, and it is a precious place registered as a World Natural Heritage site.
Many wild animals such as brown bears, Ezo deer, salmon, seals, and Steller's sea eagles inhabit the sea, rivers, and land.
In particular, Shiretoko is a habitat for brown bears, and on the Shiretoko walking trails, you may encounter them. Therefore, it is necessary to take a lecture from a local guide before going.
The lecture includes how to deal with encounters with brown bears and what to do if attacked by one, which was a very frightening and realistic lecture.
In fact, while walking on the trail, the person at the front encountered a brown bear, and we were prohibited from proceeding forward and had to return to the original place.

Shiretoko Five Lakes is a collective name for five lakes located in the Shiretoko National Park in Hokkaido, Japan. It is one of the eight scenic spots in Shiretoko and is also the main tourist attraction of Shiretoko.
The five lakes used to have no name. After becoming a tourist attraction, they were directly named by the number: one lake, two lakes, three lakes, four lakes and five lakes.
According to legend, this is the depression created by God's hand when it reaches here. It has become a lake after a long period of evolution. The biggest attraction here is that the calm lake reflects the beauty of the mountains and the red leaves. Watching the red-stained mountains from the walking trails is also a very shocking landscape.
