In 1826, the King of Vientiane, Anouvong invaded Siam, seeking complete independence. Anouvong's forces seized the city of Nakhon Ratchasima by a ruse when the governor was away. The invaders evacuated the inhabitants, intending to resettle them in Laos. Lady Mo is credited with saving her people by harassing the enemy. Varying stories describe her either getting the invading soldiers drunk, or leading a rebellion of the prisoners on the way back to Vientiane. The generally accepted version is that, when the Lao invaders ordered the women to cook for them, Lady Mo requested knives so that food might be prepared. That night, when the invaders were asleep, she gave the knives to the imprisoned men. They surprised the Lao troops, who fled, and the prisoners escaped. Thai King Rama III soon sent an army in pursuit, led by General Sing Singhaseni (สิงห์ สิงหเสนี). He defeated Anuvoung's forces in three days of fighting and completely destroyed Anuvoung's capital city of Vientiane.

The Thao Suranari Monument
The Thao Suranari Monument, also known locally as 'Ya Mo', commemorates a brave Thai heroine from nearly 200 years ago. She rallied the villagers to fight against the army of King Anouvong (the King of Vientiane) who intended to invade Bangkok. She was later honored with the title 'Thao Suranari'. As time passed, her story began to fade. To honor her bravery, a monument was erected during the reign of King Rama V, about 91 years ago. Since then, it has become a spiritual refuge and a center of faith for the people of Korat. People come to pray for various blessings, including good fortune, career success, safe travels, and overcoming obstacles.

legendary heroine Yaa Mo (Thao Suranari)
Address : Rajadamnern Rd, Nai Mueang, Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima District, Nakhon Ratchasima 30000, Thailand
Highlight :, Many attractions in Korat are centred around the legendary heroine Yaa Mo (Thao Suranari), as well as the victorious battle she led against invading Laotians (not bad for an elderly woman, although you really don’t want to mess with an Isaan granny). And Yaa Mo is celebrated throughout the city, starting with Korat City Gate (Pratu Chumphon), known also as ‘Yaa Mo Entrance’. Then there are all sorts of shrines and monuments dotted through the central city square including a presiding Yaa Mo statue in her honour. This is also where you will find a smaller city gate where legend tells ‘if passed through the visitor will either return to Korat someday or marry someone from Korat’. So to be safe I didn’t pass through (I’m happily married) and a return to Korat is almost guaranteed anyway. Again, back to Yaa Mo, there is a temple nearby named Wat Sala Loi (Floating Pavillion Temple) which was originally built by the heroine herself and is home to her relics (although there is a new more fancy temple now built next to it).
