This shrine called Tomioka Hachimangu is known as the birthplace of Kanjin sumo. Every year there will be 2 sessions (Spring and Autumn) of wrestling event to be held here under the permission of the Shogun during Edo period. Established almost 400 years ago in 1627, this shrine received cordial protection from the Tokogawa shogunate. In 1900, there is a stone monument being erected to commemorate the succesive yokozuna, named Yokozuna Rikishi-hi, built by Jinmaku Kyugoro. Today, it is named one of the 10 important shrine in Tokyo (Tokyo Jissha).
