I visited the Toyama Glass Art Museum.
Did you know that Toyama is one of the world's leading glass cities? This museum, designed by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma, is popular for its unique architecture. The building houses the Toyama Glass Art Museum, the Toyama City Library Main Building, and a museum shop.
On this day, in addition to the permanent exhibition, the Toyama Glass Art Award Exhibition 2024 was also being held, and the displays were absolutely stunning!
Please note that photography is not allowed in the permanent exhibition.
The museum shop also had a lot of stylish items, so I highly recommend it.

Trip to Toyama 🇯🇵
It was a trip to Toyama, Japan. When I visited Toyama, I discovered that this charming city offers a mix of stunning natural beauty, cultural experiences, and delicious local cuisine.
I began my exploration at Toyama Castle Park, a beautiful historical site right in the city center. The reconstructed castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's feudal past, and the surrounding park is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
📍Honmaru, Toyama, 930-0081
💰* ¥210
I also visited the Toyama Glass Art Museum. The architecture alone is worth the visit, but the real highlight is the collection of contemporary glass artworks, which is simply stunning. The exhibits are beautifully curated, offering a modern contrast to the historical castle 🙌🙌🙌
📍5-1 Nishicho, Toyama, 930-0062
💰 ¥800
After exploring, I had lunch at Sushi Dai Toyama, a fantastic place to try some of the freshest sushi 🍣 I've ever had. I would suggest trying their Masu-no-sushi, a type of pressed trout sushi that Toyama is famous for. The flavors are delicate and fresh, perfectly paired with the local sake 🍵
📍1-220 Sougawa, Toyama, 930-0083
💰 Around ¥3,000
I took a day trip to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. This is a must-do if you're in Toyama! The scenic journey through the Japanese Alps is breathtaking, with highlights like the majestic Kurobe Dam and the incredible snow walls in spring 😍 I’d recommend starting early in the morning to make the most of the day.
📍Tateyama Station, 68 Ashikuraji, Tateyama, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama 930-1405
💰Varies (around ¥10,000 for a full pass)
After a day of adventure, I dined at Minamoto Shokudo, a cozy local eatery that serves Toyama's famed white shrimp tempura. The crispy tempura with a side of rice and miso soup was comforting after a long day, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming.
📍3-1, Minami-cho, Toyama, 930-0087
💰 Around ¥2,000
I also visited the Ishiuchi Soba Village, a great spot to experience local culture and enjoy hand-made soba noodles. Watching the noodles being made from scratch was a treat, and the flavor was wonderfully earthy and chewy.
📍Ishiuchi, Toyama, 930-0835
💰 Soba set meal around ¥1,500
Last but not least, I stopped by Café Musetti, a lovely café in Toyama Station that serves delightful pastries and tea. It's a great place to relax, people-watch, and soak in the last few hours in this beautiful city.
📍1-227-5 Meirincho, Toyama, 930-0001
💰Around ¥1,000

Toyama | A Masterpiece of Architecture in a Small City Under the Snowy Mountains
Toyama Glass Art Museum, located on the south side of Toyama Station, is an eye-opening comprehensive building.
✅Exterior Design
🌟The 'TOYAMA KIRARI' building is the work of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who advocates for architectural design to return to nature.
🌟The exterior, skillfully combining different materials such as granite, glass, and aluminum, creates a visually stunning sparkling facade, reminiscent of the ice-covered Tateyama Mountain Range in winter, grand and majestic.
🌟The facade shines brilliantly as it reflects sunlight from different angles.
✅Interior Design
🌟The building houses a library, glass art museum, restaurant, gallery, and a bank.
🌟Looking up from the second-floor atrium, you can see through the five-story space at a glance.
✅Architectural Features
🌟Cedar wood planks are arranged in a surrounding manner upwards, leaving a small blank space under the ceiling, allowing sunlight to pour down from the glass ceiling, making one feel as if they are in a bright forest.
🌟Similar designs by Kengo Kuma can be found in COEDA HOUSE café in Atami, Kenzo Tange Building in Paris, and the lobby of Hyatt Regency Beijing Wangjing.
✅Glass Exhibition
🌟Toyama was once home to many glass craftsmen, which is why the theme of the glass art museum exists.
🌟After viewing the exhibition, you can check out the works of current Toyama glass artists in the shop on the second floor.
📝Note Tips:
2F: Cafe & Shop. You can buy various Toyama-exclusive glass products, daily items, and souvenirs in the shop, but they are quite expensive.
3F-4F: Special & Permanent Exhibitions. Mainly displaying modern glass art collected by Toyama City, with exhibitions changing periodically, gathering various glass arts in one place.
6F: Glass Art Garden. Showcasing the spatial art works of modern glass art master Dale Chihuly. His works are free-spirited, dazzling, and create a colorful world constructed with glass.

Toyama, a treasure trove of a city, is charming in its own right even without the 'shi' from 'Fujishan'
🎈Travelers, did you know? Besides the bustling Tokyo and Osaka, Japan also has a low-key yet enchanting treasure city—Toyama! 💎 Although it lacks the name 'Fuji', its scenery, art, and cuisine are second to none! 👀
🚄Transportation tips: Departing from Tokyo, Osaka, and other places, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen or JR express train directly to Toyama Station, then transfer to the tram or bus to easily get to various attractions! 🎒
🎨Toyama Glass Art Museum, this place is simply a perfect combination of glass and art! Designed by the architectural master Kengo Kuma, the interweaving of cedar planks, glass, and mirrors creates enchanting light and shadow, making you feel the urge to become an artist every time you visit! 👩🎨 Admission is only 200 yen, what a bargain!
🌄Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, standing here you can overlook the stunning views of the Japanese Alps and the Uchikawa Coast, instantly broadening your mood! Moreover, it's free to enter, offering great value for money! 💖
🌊Uchikawa Coast, truly a sanctuary for healing the soul! The sea breeze gently caresses, waves lap the shore, and worries are blown away! 💨 And it's super photogenic here, easily capturing great shots!
🙏Takaoka Daibutsu, as famous as the Great Buddha of Nara and Kamakura, is a symbol of Toyama! Standing in front of the huge Buddha statue, you can feel the tranquility and solemnity, as if all worries are embraced. 🙏
💡Attention anime fans! This is also the hometown of Doraemon! Around Takaoka Station, you can encounter various Doraemon character statues, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a ride on the limited Doraemon-themed train! 🚃
🍜Food recommendation time! Glass shrimp salt ramen, with firm noodles and a rich broth, paired with Toyama Bay's unique glass shrimp, is a feast for the taste buds! There's also the Toyama rice koji miso ramen, where the unique miso flavor perfectly combines with the aroma of whole wheat flour, leaving a lasting impression! 🍲
🌈Toyama, a treasure city that is charming in its own right even without the 'shi'. 🌈 Whether it's natural scenery, artistic atmosphere, or culinary experiences, it's hard not to fall in love with this place! 💕

Discover the beautiful of glass in Toyama
Toyama City in the Hokuriku region was my home for over two years. I finally had a chance to visit it again, this time with friends. I took them to one of the cities greatest attractions which is the Toyama Glass Art Museum. It is perfectly located right in front of a tram station and not too far from Toyama Castle. The museum does not only hold exhibits from famous artists all over the world, but also has an extensive collection of books in different languages and its own library. If you ever find yourself visiting the Hokuriku region, I can’t recommend this place enough.
