The Grand Hall of the Jade Emperor Pavilion
A rare Nanming wooden structure - the Grand Hall of the Jianshui Jade Emperor Pavilion
The Jianshui Jade Emperor Pavilion was originally built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573 ~ 1620), and was burned down in 1647 when the rebel army led by Zhang Xianzhong breached the Jianshui city walls. It was rebuilt in 1654, and the earliest surviving building in the Jade Emperor Pavilion is this grand hall from the Yongli era.
Representative double-eaved grand halls from the Ming Dynasty in Yunnan include the Zhi Lin Temple Grand Hall, the Heqing Confucian Temple Ancestral Hall, and the Chuxiong Confucian Temple Dacheng Hall, among others. The construction methods of the Jade Emperor Pavilion Grand Hall have appeared in the aforementioned Ming structures, such as the mountain beam frame of the upper eave resting on the corner beams of the lower eave; the dougong (bracket sets) on all four sides of the lower eave are connected by horizontal tie beams to form a well-shaped frame; and the four golden columns in the central bay support the core two-bay beam frame with five sets of beams, etc.
