When summer in the city becomes almost unbearable, perhaps the best answer is simply to head into the mountains. In Lishui, Zhejiang, coolness seems to hide everywhere—in highland forests, deep valleys, rushing waterfalls and clear mountain streams. Instead of air-conditioning, there is the sound of flowing water; instead of concrete and traffic, there are green hills and fresh mountain air. One of my favourite escapes is Daji Snowflake Waterfall in Jingning. Perched at an elevation of around 1,000 metres, this mountain retreat is known for its pleasantly cool summer climate, with average temperatures of around 22°C. Walking along the forest trails, listening to the waterfall roaring somewhere through the valley, the difference from the sweltering city feels almost immediate. The higher you climb, the cooler the air becomes. And then there are the waterfalls. At Qingtian Shimen Cave and Qiansiyan, deep valleys open up to spectacular cascades, with water plunging through the surrounding cliffs and forest. On sunny days, the spray can catch the light and create fleeting rainbows—those little moments that make a waterfall feel even more magical. For something more playful, head to Baoxi Tangshang Village in Longquan. The streams here are remarkably clear, with pools of different sizes scattered among the rocks. The water is cold and refreshing, making it an ideal place to slow down, sit beside the stream or simply dip your feet into the water and let the summer heat melt away. And around the foot of Yunhe Rice Terraces, mountain streams wind through the landscape beneath the famous terraced hills. You don't necessarily need a major attraction. Find a shallow stretch of water, take off your shoes and walk barefoot through the stream. Sit beside the bank and let the breeze pass through the trees. Watch the water flowing between the stones while the mountains rise quietly beyond. Suddenly, summer doesn't feel quite so hot anymore. What I love about these places is that the cooling experience isn't just about temperature. It is the combination of shade, water, elevation, greenery and sound. The mountains seem to have their own version of summer. A cooler one. A slower one. A summer where the soundtrack is a waterfall rather than traffic, and where a few minutes beside a mountain stream can feel like a complete reset. 📍 Lishui, Zhejiang, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: For waterfalls, try including surrounding cliffs, trees and a little water mist rather than photographing only the cascade. Going out with kids for National Day and worried about getting tired? These 6️⃣ places are stroller-friendly 1️⃣ Dongguan | Guangdong Bringing kids to Humen Bridge? Don't try to walk the whole span. 📍The viewing road near Weiyuan Battery on Humen Bridge lets you push a stroller all the way to the river. The sea breeze is strong, so secure hats with a strap. ⏰ 4:30 PM–6:00 PM is the most comfortable time; the sun isn't harsh and the bridge lights are just coming on. 🚄 Take high-speed rail to Humen station, then a taxi for about CNY 20. The stroller-friendly area is actually the greenway under the bridge, not the bridge itself. Traffic on the bridge moves fast—don't take kids up there. Vendors sell bubble wands by the river for CNY 10 each; I suggest bringing your own and using the saved money for a lemon tea. If you have kids under 3, the main draw isn't the bridge but the freighters. Big ships pass slowly and a child can watch for half an hour. The river breeze is a bit salty, so bring a light jacket. National Day is crowded; shared bikes at the greenway entrance get taken quickly, so go early. 2️⃣ Lishui | Zhejiang The Yunhe terraces aren't very stroller-friendly because of many steps, but the wooden boardwalk at the Jiuqu Yunhuan viewing platform is flat and reachable by stroller. ⏰ Arrive before 7:00 AM; the mist hasn't cleared and the terraces look like they're sitting in milk. 🍜 At the farmhouse at the foot of the mountain, the dried bamboo-shoot and old duck stew is a hit—kids can drink two bowls of the soup. At Jinyun Xiandu, the greenway from Zhutanshan to Dinghu Peak is flat and stroller-friendly, about 20 minutes. ⚠️ Don't go at noon; the stone slabs reflect harsh light and kids in strollers will get fussy. After 3:00 PM the light is softer and photos look better. Qingtian Shimen Cave requires climbing steps, so strollers are basically discouraged. If you must go, lock the stroller at the entrance and carry the child for the first 200 meters—after that there's a gentle riverside trail. The creek water is clear with little fish, and kids can play there for a long time. During National Day the terrace cable car has long lines; walking the plank path can actually be faster. 3️⃣ Xuancheng | Anhui Chaji ancient village is stroller-friendly. The bluestone paths along the Xuxi stream are worn shiny, but strollers can pass. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, the students put away their easels and the alleys get quiet—kids can toss stones by the stream. 🍜 Chaji rice cake at the village entrance is CNY 5 each, served hot. The alleys in Longchuan, Jixi, are narrow and strollers can get stuck on thresholds. I recommend a carrier and leaving the stroller at the visitor center. 📍On Longchuan Water Street, the row of Huizhou-style houses has little animals carved into the wood; kids will point at them one by one. ⚠️ The ancestral hall thresholds are high and strollers can't go in—don't try to lift them in. When visiting ancient villages with kids, don't try to see too much. Do Chaji in the morning and Longchuan in the afternoon, with a nap in the car in between. Homestays in villages rise in price during National Day—staying in the county seat and driving half an hour can be half the price. There are lots of mosquitoes by the creek, so carry insect repellent. 4️⃣ Aksu | Xinjiang The mysterious Tianshan grand canyon allows strollers in, but only for the first section. 📍From the valley mouth to the first open area is about 1 km on a sandy, compacted road—strollers are fine. ⏰ Go before 10:00 AM; the canyon is cool then, and at noon the sun is brutal. 🚄 It's about a 1-hour drive from Kuqa; hiring a car is convenient. There is no signal in the canyon—download offline maps in advance. ⚠️ Don't wear sandals—the sand gets hot. Kids should wear closed-toe shoes. The canyon walls are reddish brown and kids will ask why the rocks are red, so do a bit of prep. Walking to the first viewpoint is enough. Further in, you need to climb narrow gaps and the stroller won't pass. During National Day there are queues at the entrance, so arrive early. Bring plenty of water—there's nothing to buy inside. After exiting the canyon, vendors sell Hami melon by the road—CNY 5 a slice, sweet. 5️⃣ Baise | Guangxi Haokun Lake can be circled with a stroller. 📍The boardwalk from the Fisherman's Pier to Haokun village is the flattest section. ⏰ Go after rain when there is mist on the hills and the lake looks like a mirror. ⚠️ Some planks on the boardwalk are loose—don't push the stroller near the edge. 🍜 The lakeside farmhouse serves steamed fish just caught that day; a child can eat half a fish. Tongling Grand Canyon isn't stroller-friendly—many steep steps. If you go, use a carrier and plan to walk only part of it. 📍The tree fern forest at the canyon mouth is on flat ground and stroller-accessible—the plants look like they're from the dinosaur era, and kids will think they're on an adventure. Chengbi Lake is best in the afternoon. 📍The island pier has a lawn and you can push the stroller to the water's edge. Bring a picnic mat so a tired child can lie down. National Day in Baise isn't cold—short sleeve plus a light jacket is fine. Don't try to do three spots in one day—split into two days or the kid will have a meltdown in the car. 6️⃣ Baicheng | Jilin The Da'an Nenjiang Bay tourist area is unbelievably stroller-friendly. 📍The entire river bay boardwalk is wooden and flat, so you can push a stroller all the way to the river. ⏰ Around 5:30 PM the sun drops into the river and kids will shout "egg yolk" 🍜 Grilled river fish at the park entrance is CNY 10 each and has few bones. This place is for slow strolling, not rushing to check in. Bring breadcrumbs for the gulls, but don't overfeed them. ⚠️ The river wind is strong—hang a heavy bag on the stroller or it could be blown away. National Day is not crowded, so there's no queue. It's about a 1-hour drive from Baicheng on good roads. There's little shade in the park, so hats are essential. If a child needs a nap, lay the stroller flat and they'll sleep—the boardwalk has no steps and is very smooth. I honestly recommend this place—it's worry-free. 7️⃣ Haikou | Hainan Wugongci accepts strollers—📍the stone paths in the park are flat, but the shrine threshold is high. Leave the stroller at the door and carry the child inside. ⏰ Go when it opens at 8:00 AM; it's cool then, and after 10:00 AM it gets sunny. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays—don't go for nothing. Qilou old street tests your stroller skills. 📍The Zhongshan Road pedestrian section is flat but crowded. Fit a bell to the stroller or you won't get anywhere. 🍜 The old street's spicy soup rice has a strong pepper flavor—kids might find it too spicy, so switch to qingbuliang (a cold dessert). During National Day the old street hangs national flags and kids will point at them. Volcano crater park is stroller-accessible to mid-mountain. 📍From the ticket office to the visitor center there's a slope that makes pushing hard. I recommend taking the sightseeing shuttle to save effort. ⚠️ The volcanic rock paths are uneven and the stroller will be bumpy—kids won't sit steadily. A carrier is more reliable. Haikou is hot in the afternoon, so plan indoor activities like museums. 8️⃣ Zhangjiajie | Hunan Wulingyuan generally discourages strollers, but the Jinbian Stream riverside path is flat and stroller-friendly. ⏰ Enter at 7:00 AM while the mist is still up and the monkeys are by the road. ⚠️ Don't bring plastic bags—monkeys will grab them. 🍜 There's no food along the stream, so bring rice balls. Tianmen Mountain is not stroller-friendly—cable cars and steps make it impractical, and carriers are tiring too. If you go, stick to the west-line glass walkway and leave the stroller at the lower cable car station. If a child is very young, skip going up—the summit is windy. In Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, strollers are only suitable for the Ten-Mile Gallery small train section—ride to the end and then push back. During National Day cable car lines start at 2 hours, so don't rush with kids. Stay at the Wulingyuan entrance so you can be among the first in the morning, return to the hotel at noon for a nap, and go back in the afternoon. This place is physically demanding, but on the Jinbian Stream path you can walk slowly with a stroller, watch monkeys and the water, and keep a child entertained for half a day. When traveling with kids over National Day, don't try to do too much. One spot a day—push the stroller where you can, and carry the child where you can't. Peak season tickets for Qianshan are reasonably priced, and children below the height limit get in free—please check the official announcement on the day of your visit for details. ⏰ Enter through the main gate before 8:30 AM. The section from Wuliangguan to Tianshangtian has gentle steps and dense shade, so a 5-year-old can easily walk it on their own. Forget the stroller; a baby carrier is more practical. 📍 There is a flat area near Longquan Temple, perfect for a break and eating packed rice balls. Bottled water on the mountain costs CNY 5, so bring a couple of bottles if you can carry them. ⚠️ Don't rush to climb Wufoding in the afternoon; if the kids get tired and you have to carry them down, your legs will be shot. Head back to the city center for Niuzhuang meat pies at lunch—it costs just over CNY 20 per person, and kids love them. 02 Kaifeng | Henan Kaifeng is perfect for a slow-paced trip with attractions clustered together, so you won't have to drag the kids all over the place. Millennium City Park opens at 9:00 AM. Catch the Bao Gong welcome ceremony right after entering; kids are usually more interested in the actors in costume than the architecture. 🍜 It is too early for the Gulou Night Market at noon, so I recommend heading to Shudian Street for a bowl of four-flavor vegetable soup—CNY 15 will fill you up. Visit Iron Pagoda Park in the afternoon; the glazed bricks on the pagoda look best in the setting sun. Just pick either Daxiangguo Temple or Bao Gong Temple; kids have limited patience. ⚠️ The evening live performance at Millennium City Park requires a separate ticket. Check the showtimes in advance so you don't arrive at the gate only to find it sold out. Staying near Gulou is the most convenient option; you can walk to two spots, and it is easy to head back to the hotel for a nap. 03 Lishui | Zhejiang September in Lishui starts to feel like autumn, with the terraced fields turning yellow. Enjoying nature with kids is much better than dealing with crowds. Driving to Yunhe Terraced Fields is recommended, but the mountain roads are winding and kids might get carsick, so have plastic bags ready. ⏰ Arrive at the Jiuqu Yunhuan viewing platform by 6:30 AM. The mist hasn't cleared yet, and the soft light means you won't need filters for your photos. 📍 There is a farmhouse restaurant at the entrance of Qixingdun Village where a pot of free-range chicken soup costs CNY 120 and is enough for three people. Dinghu Peak in Jinyun Xiandu is the main attraction, but with kids, focus on Zhutan Mountain where the stream is shallow enough for wading and catching small fish. Qingtian Shimen Cave has many steps, so seniors and those with strollers should be cautious. ⚠️ These three spots are spread out, so pick at most two per day—don't be greedy. Staying in Yunhe County is half the price of staying in the scenic area. 04 Zhuhai | Guangdong September in Zhuhai is still hot, but the sea breeze makes it more comfortable than inland areas. Tickets for Chimelong International Ocean Resort are not cheap, so I recommend buying a family package online in advance to save enough for a meal. ⏰ Head straight to the Whale Shark Pavilion when the park opens; it is less crowded before 10:00 AM, and kids can get right up to the glass. Behind it is Nanming Lake, a fairly wide lake with very clear water. At night, walking along the lake, the lights on both banks make it feel like a budget-friendly alternative to the Qinhuai River. There is Yingxing Pavilion by the lake. It's not as tall or famous as the Yellow Crane Tower, but it looks magnificent at night.
