Hidden Gem Waterfall~Seljalandsfoss.
This is the famous and beautiful 'walk-behind' waterfall we saw on our South Coast tour. The path to the waterfall has handrails and is easy to walk. But as you get closer, the path loses its handrails, and you have to climb over large wet rocks to reach a muddy trail that leads behind the waterfall. Our guide warned us that it was very slippery here. It was raining and very windy the day we went. Despite having hiking boots, we didn't want to take the risk. We weren't the only ones who didn't walk behind; many young people also decided not to.
Please note that the entire path is not easy. Waterproof raincoats with hoods, waterproof pants, and waterproof hiking boots are also not easy.
The mighty Skógafoss waterfall 🗺️
#waterfall
I just got back from my trip to Iceland, and I have to say, Skógafoss waterfall was hands down one of the highlights! 🌊 Located in the south of Iceland, near the small town of Skógar, this place is an absolute gem. The entrance is free, which is amazing considering how breathtaking it is. The waterfall drops 60 meters (about 200 feet) and the mist creates a beautiful rainbow on sunny days. 🌈 I was able to get super close to the waterfall, which made for some incredible photos (and a bit of a soaking, but totally worth it!). If you're feeling adventurous, there's a steep staircase right next to the waterfall that takes you to the top. The view from up there is just unbelievable, you can see the entire valley stretching out before you. 🏞️
After spending time at Skógafoss, I took a short drive to the nearby Sólheimasandur beach to see the famous plane wreck – it’s about a 10-minute drive from the waterfall and a bit of a hike to get to, but so worth it! I also visited the Skógar Museum, which was super interesting and gave me a good sense of Iceland's history and culture. For those with a little more time, the nearby Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail is supposed to be amazing, connecting Skógafoss to the famous Þórsmörk valley.

Maybe the most beautiful waterfall ever 🗺️
#waterfall
Seljalandsfoss is hands-down one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've ever seen! 🌊 Located on Iceland's south coast, about a 2-hour drive from Reykjavik, this stunning 60-meter waterfall is a must-see if you're traveling around the island. The entrance fee is free, but there's a small parking fee of 800 ISK (around $6 USD), which is totally worth it considering the spectacular experience that awaits. 🚗
What sets Seljalandsfoss apart is that you can actually walk behind the waterfall, giving you a unique perspective of the cascading water with the beautiful Icelandic landscape in the background. The sound of the water crashing down was almost hypnotic, and the spray was refreshing—just make sure to bring a waterproof jacket, as you'll definitely get a bit wet! 🌧️ There's a well-marked path that leads you behind the falls, and the view from there is simply magical, especially when the sun is shining and creates rainbows in the mist. 🌈
Nearby, just a short walk along the same cliff face, you'll find Gljúfrabúi, a hidden gem of a waterfall tucked away inside a narrow canyon. To see it up close, you have to carefully step through a small stream, but the effort is so rewarding. It's a quieter, more intimate experience compared to Seljalandsfoss and feels like you're discovering a secret spot that not everyone knows about. 🌄
After exploring the falls, I recommend driving a bit further to visit Skógafoss, another breathtaking waterfall just 30 minutes away. You can climb the stairs to get a panoramic view of the waterfall and the coastline beyond. Also, nearby is the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, famous for its dramatic basalt columns and stunning sea views. 🖤
Seljalandsfoss and its surrounding attractions were the highlight of my Iceland trip, offering a perfect mix of adventure, nature, and photo opportunities. If you're planning to visit Iceland, make sure to put this on your list! #trip #Seljalandsfoss #IcelandAdventures #BehindTheFalls #GljúfrabúiWaterfall #SouthCoastIceland

Iceland: A Popular Filming Location
Iceland is renowned for its stunning landscapes, with countless beautiful sights. In the southern part of Iceland alone, you can find the Rainbow Waterfall (Skogafoss) and the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Each of these waterfalls has its own unique charm. The Rainbow Waterfall, facing south, is said to have a 95% chance of displaying a rainbow on sunny days, hence its name. It has also been featured in films such as 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' and 'Thor: The Dark World.' On the other hand, the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall has a more rugged appearance, with irregularly intersecting water streams. Visitors can even walk behind the waterfall to experience a different perspective and feel the grandeur of Seljalandsfoss.
Seljalandsfoss: Iceland's Version of the Water Curtain Cave
Seljalandsfoss in Iceland is renowned for its unique features. Not only is it a great spot for waterfall viewing, but it's also Iceland's version of the Water Curtain Cave! This waterfall, approximately 60 meters high, cascades down the cliff like a white silk ribbon, leaving viewers in awe.
The most interesting part is that you can walk behind the waterfall and feel the cool mist gently brushing your cheeks, as if you are in a mysterious water curtain. When the sunlight passes through the mist, it creates a rainbow, making the scene breathtakingly beautiful.
When you visit Seljalandsfoss, don't forget to take a 'water fairy' photo to add more color to your journey!
