This is our family trip to Malaysia, and we have two elders and a baby with us. Considering the check-in time was 3 AM, we booked two days so we could enter early in the morning and rest. Honestly, when you’re traveling with family, you just do whatever is most convenient as long as it’s affordable. The apartment has a great location—literally 15–18 minutes from the airport. All the food spots and supermarkets are within walking distance. It’s just an all-around great package for a first-time visitor to the city. It was easy to sign in at security and get access to the apartment. The elevator is a bit slow because there are many residents in the building, but it’s acceptable. Once we entered the room, the AC was already on—what a breeze to welcome us on arrival. The room was clean, everything tidy. There were even clear instructions in the shower on how to use the water heater, which made things a lot easier. My in-laws took a nice hot shower after a 3-hour flight delay, and it was such a relief. Later in the day—maybe because of the red-eye flight and the massive delay—the fatigue kicked in. Plus, we’re not used to the humid and hot Malaysian weather. My father-in-law started having a fever. I had Tylenol and other medicines ready in the bag, but we clearly needed a plan B. I reached out to the owner immediately. My father-in-law was feeling cold even after the fever subsided. The owner contacted his friend in the same building right away and got us an extra blanket. Plan B was to cancel our driving trip to Mount Kinabalu the next day. Since my father-in-law was sick, having him in the car for a 2–3 hour drive wouldn’t help his rest. And if things got worse while we were up in the mountains, he wouldn’t get the medical attention he needed in the middle of nowhere. It was better to cancel and stay in the city. So naturally, if we could extend the room and let him rest another day, he might recover enough for us to continue the rest of the trip. Unfortunately, the room was already booked for the next day. The owner told us we could book another room and he’d try to let us check in earlier to make the transition easier. After we booked the new room, I believe he made some arrangements behind the scenes. He later texted us saying we could stay in the same room tomorrow—no room change needed. I’m really thankful to such an understanding owner, someone who genuinely cares and makes the effort to help a random visitor like me. I told him I’d write down this positive experience to share with others. Hopefully, it brings him more business.

Facilities: Pretty good for a city hotel, very convenient for dining and shopping. Hygiene: The hygiene was excellent on the first day, but I was surprised that over a three-day stay, the room was only cleaned once. I had to request water myself, but they provided it promptly when asked. Also, the in-room safe had no battery and couldn't be used. I informed the hotel on the first day, but it was still broken when I left, so I had to carry my passport with me every day. Environment: The environment is quite nice, with its own swimming pool and clean towels available. Service: The staff were very friendly, always smiling and greeting guests. However, despite informing the front desk about the safe issue and being told it was 'OK,' no one ever came to fix it.

The surroundings are pretty good, making it suitable for travel. The rooms are also quite spacious, which is a plus if you have a lot of luggage. It's definitely better than your average hotel. If I ever need a place to stay again, this would be my top choice.

Worth the price with a strategic location The hotel offers good value for money and is located in a very strategic city-center area, making it easy to get around, with shops and restaurants nearby. The staff are friendly and helpful, providing good service throughout the stay. The room is clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. Overall, the stay was pleasant. However, there is room for improvement in terms of in-room utensils. It would be better if basic items such as spoons and dishwashing liquid were provided for added convenience. Overall, a satisfying stay and would recommend it.

The hotel service is great, and the facilities are well-maintained. The location is very convenient, with a market directly opposite offering snacks, seafood, and fruits. Next to the central market, there's also a seafood street food stall area at night.

Exceeded expectations in every aspect. Second time and we had 4 nights of fabulous stay in a seaview (corner) room on 20th floor. Room was spacious and comfy, so much so that I just wanted to stay in 😄 Location is good, easy access to Gaya Street, Signal Hill, Todak Waterfront, Suria Sabah Mall and all the good food nearby. Hotel staff were friendly and professional and speaks multiple languages. Feedback and requests were promptly attended to. Kudos! Definitely my choice of hotel when in KK!

The room is well-equipped with appliances, and the cleanliness is also good. If the weather is nice, the view from the master bedroom window must be beautiful. The master bedroom balcony is convenient for drying clothes. However, the second bedroom doesn't have a large window, and the view outside is blocked by buildings. This building has many vacation rentals, so you might have to wait a bit during peak lunch hours. The location is excellent, though. It's half an hour from the airport, a ten-minute walk to Gaya Street, and a 10-15 minute taxi ride to Tanjung Aru Beach and Star Ferry Terminal. Downstairs, there's a convenience store and Burger King, and there are night market stalls in the evening. Next door are the Kota Kinabalu Central Market and Durian Street. The host is very easy to communicate with! I would definitely choose this place again next time I visit! 😽

The location is good. But is still a distance to Imago mall. The hotel do provide one-way transport service to Imago mall or Suria mall. The room size is big and do have table and chair suitable for business traveller. The receptionist service is good and friendly. They willing to change a damage hair-dryer for us although it is taking a long time to get a good one. The facility a bit old but overall still ok.

It is still pretty new, the room is okay, smart tv is a plus with Netflix and Youtube, room is clean enough compared to other places and we were staying there with car for the weekend, so far parking still can find dbkk parking, the private parking area is pricy. But so far all smooth check in and out, there is a 24 hour convenient store connected to lobby. Have not tried the swimming pool, but there is a cafe near it, not many food options but still okay to try the western food and chill.

MMeiernikeyalunI was absolutely delighted with my stay at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu! The service was incredibly thoughtful, and all the staff were so warm and welcoming, making for a truly wonderful experience. The hotel's environment is stunning; both the gardens and the sea views are incredibly picturesque. The spot for watching the sunset is absolutely unbeatable – you don't have to go far to witness a breathtaking evening glow. The breakfast spread was extensive, offering both Chinese and Western options, all delicious and fresh. What's most convenient is that you can book island hopping tours directly through the hotel, and the jetty is right next door, which saved so much hassle and time. The island scenery was also incredibly beautiful. Overall, I had a comfortable stay and a fantastic time. If you're coming to Kota Kinabalu for sunsets and a vacation, this is definitely the top choice – I wholeheartedly recommend it!

AAnonymous UserJust got back home yesterday, and I'm determined to write a thorough review for this hotel. My kids also encouraged me to review it, because it truly deserves it. We booked four ocean villas for two nights, and I initially thought our chances of encountering issues would be higher with such a large booking. But we didn't run into any problems at all! In fact, I even regretted not booking more nights, mainly because I was put off by too many negative reviews on Ctrip. 1. **Service:** If you're comfortable communicating in English, the hotel service is absolutely fantastic. Most of the staff speak excellent English and were diligent in explaining activities, facilities, schedules, and programs. They showed us where everything was in the room and proactively informed us about the cost if we broke any of the toiletries bottles. The higher cost for broken bottles is because the contents are genuinely expensive – they're pure plant essential oil toiletries. As someone who regularly uses essential oils, I know they shouldn't be stored in plastic. Plus, these toiletries left our hair and skin feeling moisturized, not dry. I found them to be very effective. If you're worried about breaking them, just place them on the floor. 2. **Seawater:** The seawater is quite clear. While it's not a 'jelly blue,' the clarity is definitely good. We did experience a heavy downpour one day, and the water became a bit murky the next, but it was still perfectly acceptable. The photo of the large sea turtle looks a bit blurry because it was taken with a waterproof phone case, but the water itself was actually very clear. That was taken from under our water villa. The manta ray was photographed near the stairs of our water villa room. 3. **No Outside Food Policy:** They don't allow outside food in the rooms because it attracts ants and monkeys. The front desk has a dedicated area for storing snacks. We didn't bring any snacks into our room and always closed the door promptly, so we didn't have any bugs or insects. A crucial point: absolutely do not feed the monkeys! 4. **Meals:** We had all our meals at the hotel restaurant, and the food was truly delicious. A main meal costs around 90+ MYR per person (about 160 CNY). We felt the food was excellent, with a good variety of dishes and drinks beyond just the main courses. The kids' portions were a bit small; our four children ordered 7 kids' meals, and eventually, we just ordered them regular adult meals instead. 5. **Hot Water:** Regarding previous reviews mentioning no hot water, one of our rooms indeed had this issue. We called the front desk, and it turned out there's a 'water heater' button on the wall. Hot water was available within 15 minutes. So, don't hesitate to ask! Don't be shy; good service often requires you to speak up. 6. **Free Rentals:** Paddleboards, small boats, fins, and masks are all available for free rental. 7. **Marine Life:** In the ocean, we spotted baby sharks, baby manta rays, triggerfish, archerfish (the ones that shoot water), porcupinefish, and even a large sea turtle (which is rare, but we got lucky!). 8. **Welcome/Farewell:** We received a welcome ceremony and a welcome drink upon arrival. Upon departure, we sometimes had the whole staff waving goodbye to us. 9. **Guest Demographics:** There were a lot of European and American guests at the hotel, some Koreans, but not many Chinese guests. I wonder if this is due to the excessive negative reviews on Ctrip. 10. **Cleanliness:** The hygiene was excellent, and the rooms were very clean. Each room came with life vests, so you could go snorkeling anytime. That pretty much covers it. I believe if your English communication is good, feel free to chat with the front desk and restaurant staff; they are very engaging. At 8 AM, the hotel organizes a free jungle trek. It was a bit tiring, and we didn't see much – just hiking uphill. For reference, my experience this trip, and with these four rooms, was genuinely excellent. Having been to places like the Maldives, Bali, and Koh Lipe... I think this hotel offers great value for money, and I would definitely come back. Hotels at this price point on Koh Lipe before were significantly worse.

GGuest UserOverall, I'm quite satisfied. The room was spacious, and the hotel is located right by the pier. There was dedicated staff to handle luggage, though the facilities are definitely outdated and the room had a strange odor. The service was decent, but the front desk really helped us out of a bind when an unexpected situation arose on our way back.

GGuest UserThis hotel is located in the suburbs and offers a shuttle bus service to the airport twice a day (morning and evening), which needs to be booked in advance. There's also a shuttle at 1 PM to Times Square and a shopping plaza, also requiring prior booking as same-day reservations might not be available. It's perfectly adequate for a family vacation, offering various paid activities, including a firefly watching tour at the Meng River mangrove forest. While there weren't many fireflies, it was still enough to entertain the kids, and its proximity to the hotel was a plus. The hotel's beach is uncrowded. The sunset views here are far superior to those at the Shangri-La in the city. The staff are very enthusiastic. All facilities here outperform the city's Shangri-La. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, there was a lion dance for guests to take photos with. Management came around to hand out red envelopes to children, creating a wonderful atmosphere. All in all, for a family vacation, I would still choose this hotel in the outer suburbs.

GGuest UserThe closest hotel to the pier, hands down. I don't know how the ratings are calculated... I'm not judging it by domestic standards; when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Local facilities just aren't that great. Based on what I saw online, I thought it would be terrible, but the room was surprisingly clean. Although there's nowhere to hang clothes to dry, I'd advise anyone who loves going out to sea and exploring the pier to stay close by. The front desk staff were also great; they have a WeChat for communication and translation. Don't bother looking at the negative reviews or the ratings. I stayed in town for 6 days, and the first place, which had the highest rating, was personally the worst.

HHefeng05This is my second stay at the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, and the experience was excellent once again! 👍 📍 The location is absolutely perfect, right in the city center. It's a 5-10 minute walk to shopping malls and duty-free shops, and even closer to Durian Street and Gaya Street, making it super convenient for dining, shopping, and exploring. In the evenings, it's lovely to stroll to the night market or the seafront. 🛏️ I highly recommend the high-floor sea-view rooms. The views are unbeatable 🌊, and watching the sunset is breathtaking! The rooms are spacious and clean, the bedding is comfortable, and it's perfect for family trips. They even offer a complimentary extra bed, which is a thoughtful touch. 🍽️ The breakfast deserves special praise! There's a wide variety of dishes, and the freshly cooked noodles and rice vermicelli have different toppings each day – the beef and tendons are incredibly flavorful 😋. The Teh Tarik (pulled tea) is rich and aromatic, and the croissants are thin and crispy, unlike any I've had in China! The Chinese-speaking staff even help prepare the Teh Tarik, providing friendly and attentive service. 💁 The staff are always smiling, proactive, and enthusiastic. Communication in Chinese is largely seamless, making you feel right at home.

GGuest UserEverything was fine. Service, location. Easy access. Free parking. Beautiful sight of room. Except I do feel the size of beds seem smaller than other hotel. Location is nice. Easy to walk around other places. Near KK plaza & walking distance to waterfront & centrepoint sabah. But do smell market at the parking lot. Swimming pool cgood. Got both for adult and kids. I do wish more table & seats provided outside of changing room. Breakfast was worth it. For kids & adults. I would suggest if you could add hot chocolate for drinks as well. Personally I would like to stay at this hotel next time.
