Il Bersagliere Review

This is one of those informal Italian restaurants frequented by locals, and thus offering good food at very reasonable prices. My spaghetti amatricana was great, as well as t-bone steak that followed it. My wife was also very happy with her beef with rucola. Only my kids were not that happy with their lamb, but it was our mistake to order it for them, and not the problem with the dish itself. So we were pretty happy with the meal. The problem was a surprise in our bill at the end - 15% service charge on top of standard "pane e copperto". Discussion about that didn't change anything so we ended up paying the full bill. The way I see it is that this is a restaurant mainly for locals, which adds this extra service charge only for tourists. Without this hidden extra 15% it would be cheap, especially for Rome. So the extra charge makes the whole bill equivalent to what you would pay in other, mostly worse restaurants. That is why it is difficult to rate it in this case. However, even though the food was very good, this extra service charge spoiled the experience, so I can't go above "average".

We went here for dinner having been to another restaurant at lunchtime with the same menu. At lunchtime we questioned the mysterious bread we were charged for ..along with a 3 euro service charge. This evening we were again charged for bread we didn't order and a 5 euro service charge! We questioned the bread and this was removed but the service charge remained again original bill price...what a con. Food was fine but beware of hidden charges..spoiled the evening.
