▲ The Lama Temple was originally the residence of Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty during his tenure as a Beile and Prince, as well as the birthplace and childhood home of Emperor Qianlong. It served as the "residence before accession" for both emperors. In 1694 (the 33rd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign), Emperor Kangxi built this mansion and bestowed it upon his fourth son, Prince Yong, hence it was called the Prince Yong's Mansion. In 1725 (the 3rd year of Emperor Yongzheng's reign), the mansion was converted into an imperial palace and renamed the Lama Temple. In 1744 (the 9th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign), it was transformed into a Tibetan Buddhist monastery and became the Qing government's central institution for managing Tibetan Buddhist affairs nationwide.
