Bafang Shisanxiang

Bafang Shisanxiang is a historic Hui ethnic district preserved in the old town of Linxia. In ancient times, people established religious quarters around eight mosques, gradually forming a settlement pattern of "living around the mosque and trading around the quarter." "Bafang" (Eight Quarters) thus became the synonym for the Hui residential area in Hezhou. With its blue-brick alleys, brick-carved gate towers, and bustling daily life intertwined, walking inside feels like unfolding a long scroll of life in an old Northwest city. On the wall of Dagaxa Lane, there is a large brick carving titled "Panoramic View of Bafang Shisanxiang" that captures the entire district. The Dagongguan old residence restores the old scenes of Bafang families drinking Gaiwan tea, receiving guests, and the historical scenes of the Tea Horse Road trade and merchant caravans. In the Handicraft Museum, you can see intangible cultural heritage crafts such as carved gourds, copper fire pots, Hezhou clay sculptures, and egg carvings. The "Dragon and Phoenix" brick-carved screen wall in front of the Beixiang Mosque, dating back to the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, is also worth stopping to admire. Themed alleys like Hezhou Suyuan Lane, Silk Road Hui Merchant Lane, and Tongqu Lane, as well as the Gaiwan Tea Square and the Hongshui River area, are all perfect for strolling and exploring at a leisurely pace. If you get tired of walking, why not sit down for some "Gua Wanzis" (tea scraping)? Learn from the locals how to use the lid to scrape the tea leaves, then blow and sip a cup of Gaiwan tea, paired with Youguoguo (fried dough) and Sanzi (fried dough twists). In Bafang Weidao Lane, you can also find local snacks such as beef offal soup, sugar oil cakes, Liangpi (cold skin noodles), and sweet wheat.Linxia · 18.1 km from Dongxiang Autonomous County

Gansu Provincial Museum

Gansu Provincial Museum is a large comprehensive museum centered on the civilization of the Silk Road. Located at a strategic point along the Silk Road and a convergence zone of Han and Tibetan cultures, its collections embody the diverse characteristics of the Central Plains, Western Regions, and the Tibetan Plateau. The three treasured artifacts—the Galloping Bronze Horse, the mural brick of a courier, and the painted pottery vase with a human-head-shaped mouth—serve as iconic representations of the museum. The museum has three floors, featuring permanent exhibitions on themes such as the civilization of the Silk Road, Buddhist art of Gansu, painted pottery of Gansu, paleontological fossils, and revolutionary Gansu. The Silk Road civilization exhibition on the second floor is the museum's centerpiece: the bronze galloping horse unearthed in 1969 from the Leitai Han tomb in Wuwei is displayed here. The horse has three hooves in the air and one stepping on a flying bird, standing steadily on a single hoof. Its image is now the symbol of Chinese tourism. In the same hall, the mural brick depicting a courier from the Wei-Jin tombs in Jiayuguan shows a messenger galloping on horseback, notably without a mouth, symbolizing the need for couriers to "keep their mouths shut." This pattern was later adopted as the emblem of China Post. The exhibition also features a procession of chariots and horses excavated from the same tomb as the bronze horse, along with Han and Tang dynasty silk textiles, gold and silver artifacts, making the prosperity of Silk Road trade vividly tangible. The Buddhist art exhibition hall on the third floor features replicas of caves from the Mogao Grottoes and Maijishan Grottoes, alongside statues, ritual objects, white pagodas, and prayer wheels from both Han and Tibetan Buddhism. Stepping into the hall feels like entering a temple, and this harmonious blend of Han and Tibetan styles is rarely seen elsewhere. On the same floor, the painted pottery exhibition showcases ceramics from cultures such as Dadiwan, Yangshao, and Majiayao, with intricate and fluid patterns like spiral and sawtooth designs. Among them, the painted pottery bottle with a human-head-shaped spout unearthed at Dadiwan in Qin'an, which integrates facial sculpture with the pottery vessel, is a highly popular exhibit. If you're interested in natural history, the paleontological fossils exhibition hall features the impressive skeleton of the Yellow River ancient elephant unearthed in Heshui, and the dinosaur fossils and reconstructed models are also popular with children. The revolutionary Gansu exhibition hall showcases historical artifacts and materials from periods such as the Nanliang base area and the Shaan-Gan-Ning border region, narrating the modern history of this land. The museum houses a large quantity of exhibits, and even a quick tour would take half a day. It's recommended to start with the Silk Road exhibition on the second floor, then proceed to the third floor for Buddhist art and painted pottery, following a logical route. In the exhibition halls, you can scan to listen to the audio guide, and at certain times, volunteers also provide guided explanations.Lanzhou · 56.7 km from Dongxiang Autonomous County

Yellow River Three Gorges

The Three Gorges of the Yellow River is located in Yongjing County, Gansu Province. The Yellow River winds and twists when passing through here, forming three tall and deep canyons, namely Bingling Gorge, Liujia Gorge and Yanguo Gorge, which are also known as the Three Gorges of the Yellow River. Within the Three Gorges of the Yellow River, there are many resort scenic spots such as Liujiaxia Reservoir, Bingling Temple Grottoes, Taiji Island, etc. There are natural scenery such as canyons and reservoirs, cultural attractions such as Buddhist temples and grottoes, and entertainment projects such as farm picking, which are rich in content. The Three Gorges of the Yellow River is only 70 kilometers away from Lanzhou, making it a short-distance travel choice around Lanzhou. Liujiaxia Reservoir is on the north side of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. There is a direct bus from Lanzhou. Tourists who come to play will come here first. If you come by car from Lanzhou, you will first arrive at the dam in the scenic spot, where you can see the huge lake on the Yellow River created by the water conservancy project. It is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the river is very clear, the lake is also clear and green, and the environment is very beautiful. The end point of the boat is at Bingling Temple on the south side of the lake, and tickets can be purchased to enter the tour. Bingling Temple is built on the mountain. It is a cave temple mainly dominated by mountains. The surrounding mountains are all Danxia landforms, with rows of red rock walls steep and towering, as well as sister peaks, skull cliffs and other uniquely shaped red rock cliffs. Bingling Temple is a group of grottoes dug along the cliffs. There are four floors up and down, and there are more than 180 large and small grottoes. The grottoes were excavated in the Jin Dynasty. No matter their historical value, age and craftsmanship, they are no less than Dunhuang's Momo. High Grotto. Visiting the Bingling Temple Grottoes, you can see a 15-meter-high Buddha sitting in the middle of the mountain wall from a distance. There are small caves on both sides and above of the Big Buddha, you can climb up the steps to visit them one by one. The Buddha statues in the small caves are different from the Buddha statues in the mainland because the local culture was influenced by the Hu people when the statues were made. After viewing the Bingling Temple Grottoes, it is usually in the afternoon, and you can return to the dam by boat. The dam is about 1 km away from Yongjing County and can be reached by walking westward for ten minutes. Taiji Island, Zaoyuan, and Lotus Garden are located 2 kilometers west of Yongjing County, which can be reached by taxi or on foot. This area is close to the Yellow River, with many ponds, wetlands and reeds and other landscapes, which are particularly beautiful in the desolate northwestern land. You can watch birds here in spring, watch lotus flowers here in summer, and pick jujubes that are rich in the local area in autumn. There are many entertainment activities. It takes about half a day to visit Taiji Island, Jujube Garden, Lotus Garden and other attractions. At noon, you can have a special lunch at a local farmhouse, and you can try the Yellow River carp. In the afternoon, drive back to Lanzhou.Yongjing · 26.9 km from Dongxiang Autonomous County

Zhongshan Bridge

Zhongshan Bridge, also known as the Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge, spans the Yellow River with White Pagoda Mountain to its north and serves as a city landmark of Lanzhou. Completed in the late Qing Dynasty, it was built by the German firm Telge & Schroeter. The bridge materials, including steel beams and cement, were shipped from Germany across the ocean and then transported to Lanzhou via railway and horse-drawn carriage. It is one of the earliest permanent bridges built across the Yellow River in Lanzhou's history. It was later renamed Zhongshan Bridge in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a name that remains in use today. The bridge is over 200m long, and its gray-black steel truss structure is simple and substantial. The several arched steel ribs added above the bridge body during reinforcement in the 1950s give the entire structure a more imposing appearance. Today, the iron bridge is open only to pedestrians. Walking onto the bridge deck, you can see the Yellow River flowing slowly eastward beneath your feet. On the south bank lies the lush Binhe Road, while the north bank is home to White Pagoda Mountain Park. Climbing to the top of the mountain and looking back, the view of the iron bridge, the Yellow River, and the streetscape on both banks framed together is particularly beautiful. People often line up to take photos in front of the golden "Zhongshan Bridge" inscription at the south end of the bridge. In the pavilion on the east side of the south bridgehead stands a Ming Dynasty "General Pillar," a relic from the earlier Zhenyuan Floating Bridge that is easy to miss if you just walk past. After nightfall, the iron bridge offers a different scene: the bridge's colorful lights turn on, and the entire outline of the bridge is clearly illuminated. On one side are the bustling lights of Binhe Road, and on the other are the lights shining on the mountain, making it a great place to experience and photograph the night view of Lanzhou.Lanzhou · 58.9 km from Dongxiang Autonomous County

The scenery is magnificent and pleasant, and the key is that it is free. On the way to Yongjing, I passed by Liujiaxia Bridge. The mountains and rivers are beautiful. There was a thin mist floating on the lake that day I went there. It was really beautiful. There is an observation deck next to the bridge, but the sun was too strong and I didn't go up

Hidden within the Eight Squares and Thirteen Lanes is China's first museum dedicated to covered bowl tea—the Hezhou Mingyuan Covered Bowl Tea Culture Museum! The entire museum is housed in an ancient Qing Dynasty residence in Northwest China, preserving the "style of the Tang and Song Dynasties and the layout of the Ming and Qing Dynasties." Even the walls are decorated with blue and white porcelain covered bowls—it's incredibly unique! A leisurely stroll through it is so relaxing!

The Liujiaxia Reservoir is a large-scale hydroelectric power station built independently during the First Five-Year Plan. The green Yellow River and the earthy yellow mountain valleys complement each other beautifully, and the scenery along the bridge is also stunning. It's definitely worth a visit!

Lina, the lecturer at the Gambo Museum, is exceptionally skilled. During the two-hour learning experience, she demonstrated a thorough understanding of the chronological order and comparative analysis of the artifacts, meticulously integrating historical evolution with everyday life. I look forward to the completion of the new Gambo Museum and visiting it again next time.

October is a good time to appreciate chrysanthemums. The chrysanthemums in the Red Garden are graceful, elegant, and beautiful, which makes people envious. Look at the pink as rouge, the red as the sunset, the yellow as the gold in the garden, the curled silk as if it is cut by a skilled hand, and the colorful as if it is a painting. It is really more beautiful than peony, and the beauty is even more amazing. The pavilions and towers in the Red Garden are more graceful and charming under the shade of these colorful chrysanthemums.

Lanzhou Old Street is quite close to the Yellow River Tower. We walked there after visiting the Yellow River Tower. The old street area isn't small, and it feels like a newly built commercial district. In the afternoon during the off-season, there were very few people. I wonder if it will be more crowded at night? The shops are mainly restaurants, plus souvenir shops. If you're passing by, you can check it out!

Before coming to Lanzhou, I had no idea what this bridge was like. I arrived around 3 PM; the sun was still blazing, and the iron railings on the bridge felt hot to the touch. This iron bridge, built in 1909, spans the Yellow River, looking sturdy yet silent. Standing on the bridge, the Yellow River surged beneath my feet, carrying the scent of silt. Speedboats darted out from under the arches, splashing up waves, and children on the bank screamed excitedly—their jubilation was unstoppable. I didn't rush up the mountain; instead, I found a seat at a teahouse under the bridge. I ordered a cup of "Sanpaotai" (a type of local tea), 15 yuan, with refills. The bamboo chair was a bit old, but just the right amount of comfortable. Several local old men around me were cracking sunflower seeds and playing chess, occasionally glancing up at the river and saying, "The water's risen again." That relaxed feeling is rare in tourist spots. You absolutely must try the Sanpaotai at the teahouse. Don't rush; sit for at least half an hour, just gazing at the river and daydreaming—that's the real deal. The cruise ticket is only a few dozen yuan, not expensive at all, and worth experiencing the view from under the bridge. Speedboats and sheepskin rafts are available on the shore; thrill-seekers can give them a try. Regarding photography: the "Zhongshan Bridge" stone monument on the south side of the bridge is a classic spot for photos. Take your time; although the sun is strong 🌞, the river breeze is very pleasant.
