Neuschwanstein Castle

4.5/5

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the foothills of the Alps in Bavaria, Germany, near the Austrian border and not far from the small town of Füssen. Built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a tribute to composer Wagner and inspired by the legend of the "Swan Knight" Lohengrin, construction began in 1869. Its fairy-tale appearance—white walls, blue domes, and scattered spires—served as the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is perennially regarded as Germany's tourism icon. The castle interior was originally planned to have over 200 rooms, but by the time of the king's death in 1886, only a dozen had been completed, each exquisitely crafted. The throne hall's dome is painted with a star-studded blue night sky, while the floor features mosaic patterns of flora and fauna, with a chandelier modeled after a Byzantine crown hanging high above. The Gothic double bed in the king's bedroom took over four years to carve by more than a dozen sculptors. The relatively large singers' hall in the castle, adorned with murals of "Lohengrin" and "Parsifal," was modeled after the Wartburg singers' hall and still hosts concerts every September. Swan motifs are nearly omnipresent, appearing in murals, door handles, and washstands. Interestingly, this medieval-inspired castle was already equipped with telephones, central heating, hot water, and automatic flushing toilets at the time, making it remarkably advanced for its era. To capture the classic postcard-perfect shot, head to Marienbrücke. This pedestrian bridge, suspended over the Pöllat Gorge, faces the southern facade of the castle and is not far from the bus drop-off point. It gets crowded in the afternoon, so an early visit is recommended. You can take the shuttle bus, a horse-drawn carriage, or hike up the mountain. The hiking route offers a bird's-eye view of the castle, and along the way, you can also see the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle, the old royal palace on the opposite hill. The castle's ending carries a touch of tragedy: Ludwig II built it with his private funds and loans, facing strong opposition from his ministers. On a late night in June 1886, he was arrested in his castle bedroom and mysteriously died days later by Lake Starnberg. Seven weeks later, the castle opened to the public. Today, visiting the interior requires following a guide, and photography is prohibited inside. Live guides provide commentary in English or German, while an audio guide is available for Chinese. Visitor guide To the castle There are three ways to reach the castle: taking the shuttle bus, riding a carriage, or going on foot. Most people choose to take the shuttle bus, then walk a short distance to Neuschwanstein Castle, where there is a viewing platform to overlook another castle—Hohenschwangau. You can also reach the castle by carriage, where you can enjoy picturesque scenery along the way, and the witty carriage driver will share legendary stories that happened here. After disembarking, it's just a short walk to the castle entrance. If you don't want to wait in line for the shuttle bus or prefer outdoor activities, you can also hike to Neuschwanstein Castle. Along the way, you can capture an aerial view of the castle, and there are relatively fewer travelers. Take a postcard-perfect photo of the castle Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) is located near the terminal stop of the uphill bus. This 100 m-high bridge spans between two cliffs, with its floor made of wooden planks that slightly bounce when stepped on. Here, you can capture the famous postcard-perfect shot of Neuschwanstein Castle. If you arrive early before your scheduled visit time, you can first head to Marienbrücke to photograph the beautiful view of Neuschwanstein Castle, as the bridge gets overcrowded after noon. Guided tour To visit the castle interior, you must follow the official guide. The guide provides services in English and German. You can also choose to use an audio guide (available in Chinese). After the visit, you can take a short break at the café inside the castle.Schwangau · 93.3 km from Feldkirch

Abbey Library of Saint Gall is located in the monastic precinct of Saint Gallen in northeastern Switzerland. The collection here has remained largely intact since the 8th century and has been preserved to this day. It currently holds approximately 170,000 volumes, including over 2,000 manuscripts from the 8th to 15th centuries and a large number of parchment documents. The library, a Rococo hall built in the mid-18th century, features parquet floors, walls lined with carved wooden bookcases, and a frescoed ceiling. The entrance lintel is inscribed with a Greek phrase meaning pharmacy of the soul, comparing reading to nourishment for the spirit. Atop the glass display cases stand 20 cherub statues in various poses—some holding globes, others holding telescopes—hinting at the categories of books inside, like a code waiting to be deciphered. The library's treasures include the Plan of Saint Gall, drawn in the early 9th century, and an important manuscript of the German epic Nibelungenlied. An ancient Egyptian mummy is also on display here.Saint Gallen · 26.4 km from Feldkirch

The Abbey of Saint Gall is located in the heart of the old town of Saint Gallen in eastern Switzerland. Most of the existing complex was rebuilt in the mid-18th century, primarily in the Late Baroque style. The cathedral, the Abbey Library of Saint Gall, and the monks' archives together form a complete monastic precinct. The cathedral's two symmetrical towers have long been considered the city landmark of Saint Gallen. The Abbey Library of Saint Gall is the highlight of this complex. The lintel is inscribed with Greek text meaning "healing place of the soul." The hall houses approximately 160,000 books, including over 2,000 medieval manuscripts. The Irish and Carolingian manuscripts from the 8th–10th centuries are particularly precious. The hall even displays an ancient Egyptian mummy from over 2,000 years ago. The "Plan of Saint Gall," drawn around 820 AD, is also housed here. This parchment drawing depicts an idealized Benedictine monastery. The small wooden cherub carvings atop the glass display cases are also worth a close look. The cherubs on the astronomy bookcases are holding telescopes, hinting at the subject matter of the books inside. The interior of the cathedral is primarily white, accented with light green stucco decorations, creating a soft and bright atmosphere.Saint Gallen · 26.4 km from Feldkirch

We choose the horse carriage ride up, it was €8 a person. It took around 20 minutes and we enjoyed the forest view. Make sure to arrive and park at least an hour early. The entrance time is exact to every 5 minutes for crowd control. The entrance ticket includes an audio set and takes around 30 minutes. You are moved thru the rooms rather quickly. There are free lockers at information at the entrance area if needed. No pictures can be taken during the tour. **not handicapped friendly ** must be able to walk for 2-3 hours and climb up and down many flights of stairs. There are no elevators. We planned to walk down but it began to rain. So we took the horse carriage again -/€4/person.

If you're in Switzerland, it's a must-come attraction! Not only is the library itself worth traveling, but it's also great that they have a beautiful monastery here. This library is where you can kill time. Abracadabra is the first medical book to be published on the exhibition shelf. There is also a beautiful world. Please take the time to visit this wonderful place, because the city is also very strange and beautiful.

It only takes three hours to drive from the northernmost tip of Switzerland to the southeastern corner, along the southern shore of Lake Constance, then turn south, passing through St. Gallen, Liechtenstein, Chur, and St. Moritz. The St. Gallen Cathedral, a world cultural heritage site, is the most elegant church I have ever visited in Europe.

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is one of Switzerland’s most spectacular mountain destinations, offering an unforgettable experience high in the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by magnificent snow-covered peaks, vast glaciers, and breathtaking alpine scenery, the journey to the summit is an adventure itself. The panoramic views from the top are truly mesmerizing, especially on a clear day when the mountains seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon. Walking through the snowy landscape feels like entering a winter wonderland. The impressive Aletsch Glacier adds even more beauty to the experience. Jungfraujoch is a must-visit destination for travelers who love mountains, snow, photography, and extraordinary natural landscapes.

The most important and largest church in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Its tall spire is very eye-catching. It is located to the south of the Conservatory of Music and the National Palace. You can see it when you get off the bus. It is a great place to take pictures with the trees in the background.
