Penang Hill

4.4/5
643 reviews
Penang Hill is located in the central part of Penang Island, known as "Bukit Bendera" in Malay, meaning "flag hill," and consists of several continuous peaks. Due to its high elevation and dense forests, the hilltop is much cooler than the lowlands. During the British colonial era, it served as a retreat for officials, and many old colonial houses from that time still dot the area. Most travelers choose to take the century-old cable car to ascend. This mountain railway opened in the 1920s and was later fully renovated. As the cabins climb the steep slope, the views of George Town and the Penang Strait gradually unfold beneath. Upon reaching the summit, the vista opens up: on clear days, the skyline of George Town, the shimmering waters of the Penang Strait, and the verdant mountains of the Malay Peninsula across the strait are all clearly visible. Here, the colors of the sea, sky, and land blend, and one can truly appreciate why Penang is often called the "Pearl of the Orient." The Habitat, a rainforest discovery center at the summit, is also worth a visit. A 1.6 km natural trail winds along the edge of an ancient rainforest over 100 million years old. The elevated canopy walkway, Langur Way, offers a bird's-eye view of the forest, while the treetop observation deck, Curtis Crest, is an ideal spot to watch the sunset. Over 2,000 species of flora and fauna inhabit this forest. If time permits, consider heading up in the evening—after sunset, wait for nightfall as the lights of George Town and the strait gradually illuminate like a starry sky, a sight many travelers find unforgettable. Those who enjoy hiking can also trek to the summit via the old mountain trails. A reminder: temperatures vary greatly between day and night at the summit, and fog is common, so bring a light jacket. Weekends and holidays see more cable car riders, so going early or during off-peak hours is advisable.Malaysia · Northeast Penang Island

Batu Caves is a cave temple complex formed by limestone hills and is one of the most famous Hindu pilgrimage sites outside of India. This karst cave complex contains over 20 known caves, with the larger Temple Cave housing the Hindu deity of war, Murugan. It is also the central venue for Malaysia's Thaipusam festival, which attracts a large number of Hindu devotees for pilgrimage every year. At the foot of the hill stands a gilded statue of Murugan, approximately 42.7 m high and entirely gold-plated, serving as an iconic landmark of the scenic area. Next to the statue is a colorful rainbow staircase, requiring a climb of 272 steps to reach the cave entrance. Flocks of pigeons often gather on both sides of the stairs, and the plaza is dotted with multiple Hindu statues and colorful decorations. After entering the Temple Cave, walking deep along the towering cave walls, sunlight pours in from natural openings in the cave ceiling, illuminating the rock walls and Hindu shrines, with exquisite statues of Hindu deities distributed throughout the cave. The Cave Villa complex at the foot of the hill consists of the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave, displaying statues and murals based on Hindu mythology. To the left of the main staircase is the Ramayana Cave - Suyambu Lingam, with a tall statue of Hanuman standing at the entrance, and murals inside the cave depicting classic scenes from the Indian epic "Ramayana." Stalactites, stalagmites, and other karst geological features can be seen on the cave walls, and the caves are also home to various bats and other cave-dwelling creatures. A rock climbing route has been opened on the northeast side of the hill, attracting many rock climbing enthusiasts to take on the challenge.Malaysia · Batu Caves

Putra Mosque is also known as the "Floating Mosque" because about three-quarters of the building extends over Putrajaya Lake. The exterior is predominantly pink, constructed largely from rose-colored granite, and features nine domes. Construction began in 1997, and it can accommodate over 10,000 worshippers at once, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Putrajaya. The mosque consists mainly of three parts: the prayer hall, the courtyard, and the learning and functional spaces. The roof of the prayer hall resembles an open umbrella, composed of 49 domes of varying sizes arranged in a radial pattern, with a design inspired by Islamic architectural traditions. The minaret next to the mosque is tall and slender, with a rocket-shaped spire, and is equipped with elevators and stairs to reach the top. The entire mosque is designed to take full advantage of natural ventilation from the lake, with lake breezes passing through the corridors and vertical grilles to keep the interior cool. Viewed from the opposite shore, the pink domes and their reflection in the lake create a picturesque scene.Malaysia · Putrajaya

The Masjid Selat Melaka is located on the artificial island of Malacca. If the water level is high, it looks like a floating building. The Straits Mosque under the sunset is very beautiful. The sound of chanting from the radio and the sound of the waves are intertwined. The golden dome is reflected in the setting sun. After dark, the mosque will light up, and the whole building will turn into another color, with a unique charm.Malaysia · Melaka Tengah

National Mosque of Malaysia is located right next to the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and is situated in the green space beside the Lake Gardens. It was completed in 1965. "Negara" means "national" in Malay, and the name commemorates the new nation's peaceful path to independence. Unlike common mosques with onion-shaped domes, it follows a clean and crisp modernist style, using concrete and marble to create a sense of open space, making it stand out among the city's many old Moorish-style buildings. The main dome of the prayer hall is particularly worth seeing: the 16-pointed star-shaped concrete roof resembles a giant open umbrella, radiating outward from the center. Beside it stands a minaret approx. 73 m high, with a top that looks like a closed umbrella, often described by visitors as resembling a rocket. The entire complex can accommodate over 10,000 worshippers at once. After major renovations in the 1980s, the roof was tiled with blue and green tiles, which pair neatly with the white columns.Malaysia · Kuala Lumpur

Since then, the square has been renamed "Merdeka Square," and it is where the annual National Day celebrations are held.Malaysia · Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Street Market is a vibrant market in the old town of Kuala Lumpur, often visited as the city's Chinatown. The name Petaling Street originates from a tapioca mill established on the street by Yap Ah Loy, a founding father of Kuala Lumpur. Today, long green awnings cover the street, with stalls lined up one after another, offering a wide variety of clothing, watches, bags, accessories, and souvenirs. After nightfall, vendors light up their stalls and the crowds surge. The aroma of snacks fills the air, and you might occasionally encounter street performers. The lively, festive atmosphere is truly bustling.Malaysia · Kuala Lumpur

Georgetown UNESCO Historic SiteLocated on the northeast coast of Penang Island, Malaysia, the entire old town was inscribed on the World Heritage List together with Melaka in 2008. Since its founding in 1786, the old town has been home to generations of Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities. The continuous rows of Nanyang-style shophouses, clan associations, temples, and churches are well-preserved, with layers of multicultural traces overlapping in the same neighborhood; walking is the ideal way to experience it. The old streets here are also very distinctive: the mural "Kids on Bicycle" on Armenian Street is by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, where visitors can pose for photos with the actual bicycle depicted in the painting, and there is often a queue in front of the wall; the Khoo Kongsi on Cannon Street is an exquisitely carved Hokkien clan temple; the Clan Jetties of Penang at Weld Quay were built by Chinese clans of the same surname in the late 19th century, with stilt houses lined up along wooden walkways extending into the sea; places of worship for different faiths, such as the Goddess of Mercy Temple and the Kapitan Keling Mosque, stand side by side, which is why the street is known as the "Street of Harmony."Malaysia · George Town

Genting Highlands is really popular among locals. It is packed with people every weekend and holiday. There are several hotels all over Genting Highlands, including three-star, four-star and five-star hotels. Moreover, the hotel group is very generous and provides free rooms (but certain conditions must be met). This "free" strategy can also attract tourists to come and consume frequently.

Definitely worth the experience and achievement of climbing the stairs. Monkeys are intimidating and although I had no food, one jumped onto my backpack while I was climbing the stairs. Nature inside the cave is lovely.

When visiting Malacca, one always wants to see the world-famous Straits of Malacca with their own eyes, to keep a promise to sail across the Straits. A special trip was made to the Floating Mosque, just to gaze upon this busy shipping lane. The sea was vast, and the sea breeze was strong. The architecture wasn't as stunning as expected, but the view of this strait was enough to leave a lasting impression. ✨
