The Temple of Confucius, Kong Family Mansion, and Cemetery of Confucius represent holy land memorialized throughout the history of China. The Temple of Confucius was built from the remains of Confucius's old residence and is a famous place for making offerings to the scholar. The scale of the Kong Family Mansion is second in China only to the Forbidden City, and it served for hundreds of years as the long-term residence of Confucius's descendants. The Cemetery of Confucius is the burial site of Confucius and his descendants.Qufu · 24.7 km from Ningyang

The Confucius Temple is located in Qufu, a large-scale temple dedicated to Confucius, built on the site of his former residence. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's four great ancient architectural complexes, alongside the Palace Museum, the Chengde Mountain Resort, and the Dai Temple. The architectural complex here is grand and vast, preserving many historical relics and stories. Travel notice On-site guides are available at the visitor service hall and Confucius Temple square. It is recommended to hire a guide to better understand the historical anecdotes of the relics here. If you come in the morning, you can watch the city gate opening ceremony at 8 am outside the south gate of the attraction, featuring performers in ancient costumes. At 5 pm (5:30 pm during peak season), there is a city gate closing ceremony. However, performances are usually suspended during the Spring Festival (please check the attraction's official website for specific announcements). Another thing to note is that the localPrice gougingIt is quite common, and many travelers have encountered taxi drivers, tricycle riders, or guides who trick them into visiting overpriced and obscure man-made attractions or restaurants. Do not easily believe their promotions. Also, try to avoid eating around the attraction, as many nearby restaurants overcharge customers severely. Travel guide Here there are nine courtyards in total, with over a hundred buildings symmetrically arranged on both sides of the central axis. After entering the first memorial gate, "Confucius Temple - Lingxing Gate," and looking inward, one sees gateways layered deep beyond sight. Next, you will pass through the Confucius Temple - Shengshi Gate, Confucius Temple - Hongdao Gate, Dazhong Gate, and Tongwen Gate in sequence, with lush courtyards between each gate. Among them, there is a corner tower on each side near the corners of the Dazhong Gate, while the Tongwen Gate has two large stone steles on each side, which are the famous four imperial steles from the Ming Dynasty. Beyond the Tongwen Gate stands the towering Kuixing Pavilion, a library building originally constructed during the Song Dynasty. Past the Kuixing Pavilion, you'll find thirteen stele pavilions housing over fifty stone inscriptions from various dynasties, primarily recording imperial temple renovations and sacrificial ceremonies. Further ahead lies the Dacheng Gate, whose name plaque bears the calligraphy of Emperor Yongzheng from the Qing Dynasty. The architectural highlight here is the interlocking flying eaves between the Dacheng Gate and adjacent stele pavilions. Beyond the Dacheng Gate stands a pavilion named "Confucius Temple - Apricot Altar," built by Confucius' descendants to commemorate his teaching. Further ahead lies the majestic Confucius Temple - Dacheng Hall, with its twenty-eight stone columns adorned with cloud-and-dragon relief carvings. Inside the hall hang inscribed plaques, including Emperor Kangxi's calligraphy "Model teacher for all ages" and Emperor Guangxu's "The essence of culture resides here." Confucius Temple - Dacheng Hall is the main hall and iconic building of the attraction. It is known as one of the "three great halls of the East" along with the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Palace Museum and the Tiankuang Hall in Dai Temple. The hall enshrines a statue of Confucius in the center, flanked by statues of his 72 disciples and other Confucian sages. Major Confucius worship activities by emperors throughout history were held here. Today, many visitors come here daily, among whom areDacheng HallIt used to be quite popular for incense offerings. Dacheng HallThe rear hall enshrines Confucius' wife Qiguan Shi, while the hall of sacred traces contains stone-carved comic strips depicting Confucius' deeds. Additionally,Dacheng HallThe western path features structures for worshipping Confucius's parents, while the eastern path includes Confucius's former residence and the Lu Wall. The "Lu Wall" is a short section of low wall where, according to legend, Confucius's descendants hid his bamboo scrolls during the Qin Shi Huang's "burning of books and burying of scholars" era. During Emperor Wu of Han's reign, bamboo slips such as the "Analects" and the "Classic of Filial Piety" were discovered here. Attraction activities Throughout dynasties, it has been a place for worshipping Confucius, and the Confucius worship activity continues to this day. In recent years, the grand Confucius memorial ceremony is usually held between September 26 and October 10 annually, featuring large-scale temple music and dance activities. You can see many participants wearing Hanfu and traditional hats, along with people from all walks of life coming to pay homage to the sage Confucius.Qufu · 24.6 km from Ningyang

Millennium City Park

4.6/5
28.6k reviews
Millennium City Park is located by the Longting Lake in Kaifeng, a large-scale historical and cultural theme park that faithfully recreates the Northern Song Dynasty's capital based on the famous painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" by artist Zhang Zeduan, following the original layout at a 1:1 scale. The park is divided into two sections by the Shuangting Bridge: the southern area recreates the bustling urban life of Bianjing, with taverns, teahouses, pawnshops, and artisan workshops lining the streets, where peddlers with shoulder poles and shouting shop assistants move about; while the northern area features imperial gardens, with lakeside halls and quadrangular courtyards standing by the water. Staff and vendors throughout the park wear Song-style attire, accompanied by ancient music and the rhythmic sounds of bells and drums, creating the illusion of "stepping into a painting and traveling back a thousand years in a single day." The architecture here offers visually striking highlights: the Rainbow Bridge spanning the Bian River replicates the famous bridge from ancient paintings, arching like a rainbow—watching grain barges pass beneath recreates the painting's ambiance. Fuyun Pavilion towers above all other structures with its crimson facade and golden-roofed eaves, offering panoramic garden views. The reconstructed Shangshan Gate mirrors Kaifeng's Northern Song dynasty city gates, standing majestic with resplendent paintings as the garden's most imposing structure. Waterside pavilions like Shuixin Xie, Double Pavilion Bridge, and Nine Dragons Bridge dot the emerald waters in picturesque harmony. The daytime highlight is the scattered live performances throughout the park: "Judge Bao inspecting the Bian River grain transport" unfolds on the water by Rainbow Bridge, "Squire Wang's daughter seeking a husband" brings the embroidered ball tossing matchmaking to the streets, and "Yue Fei unhorsing Prince Xiao Liang" stirs up dust with galloping hooves in the drill ground. Folk performances like cockfighting, stilt walking, cuju (ancient football), and pan drumming are interspersed throughout. Families with children can visit Fun Garden and Great Song Games to try archery, dart throwing, rope climbing, and hoop diving—experiencing every Song dynasty game from a thousand years ago—or dress in period costumes at Square Courtyard to take mock imperial exams. Street-side workshops showcase folk crafts like Bian embroidery, Zhuxian Town woodblock prints, official kiln porcelain, and dough figurines, where visitors can watch artisans at work. The park takes on a different face after nightfall: red lanterns light up one after another, and the streets are ablaze with lights, making it seem like a completely different place from daytime. The large-scale water show "Northern Song Dynasty: Splendid Dreams of Dongjing" is performed on Jinglong Lake. The entire show is connected by eight classic Song Dynasty poems and a scroll of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," transporting the audience back to Dongjing of the Northern Song Dynasty a thousand years ago. The performance lasts approx. 70 minutes, and many travelers specifically reserve their itinerary for the evening to wait for this show. After the performance, you might as well climb the Shangshan Gate tower to overlook the park scenery and the night view of Kaifeng under the lights. Dining in the park is also convenient: the snack street and night market around the Dongjing food area gather Kaifeng snacks like soup dumplings and mutton pancake, perfect for eating while strolling; for a proper sit-down meal, head to Sunyang Restaurant, a recreation of the "main shop" depicted in paintings, and try traditional Henan dishes such as soup dumplings and carp with noodles.China · Kaifeng

In the Analects, Confucius praises Yan Hui everywhere, and Yan Hui is also famous for his virtue. Therefore, when later generations worship Confucius, they also constantly raise the honorific title for Yan Hui. During the Yuan Dynasty, Yan Hui was given the title of "Fusheng Gong" and honored as "Fusheng". The Yan Temple is also called "Fusheng Temple". The Yan Temple is divided into five courtyards, with 159 halls, pavilions, storehouses, and gatehouses. The main buildings in the temple include Fusheng Gate, Guiren Gate, Yangsheng Gate, Louxiangjing, Leting, Fusheng Hall, and stele pavilions. It is a rare and large ancient building complex. There is a Louxiang Well inside the Fusheng Gate and an octagonal open-air pavilion outside. To the north of the well is a stone tablet of "Louxiang Well" erected in the Ming Dynasty to commemorate Yan Hui's frugal character of "living in a humble alley with only a bowl of rice and a jug of water". The Fusheng Hall is the main hall. There are also tablets of Yan family celebrities such as Yan Zhitui, Yan Shigu, Yan Zhenqing, and Yan Gaoqing in the east and west wings.Qufu · 24.5 km from Ningyang

I visited twenty years ago. In those twenty years, scenic spots across the country have undergone tremendous changes, but the Three Confucian Sites seem to have made little progress. The Confucius Cemetery looks like a mountain in the suburbs; besides Confucius's tomb, there's not much to see. The Confucius Mansion is basically a Republican-era style; everything is new. Compared to other grand sites like the Qiao Family Compound and the Zhu Family Garden, it's nothing. The Confucius Temple is alright, with history and artifacts. The entire scenic area reeks of horse urine, and the roads are covered in tree sap that sticks to your shoes. This was supposed to be one of the earliest 5A-level scenic areas!

The official guide, Mr. Li, was excellent and definitely a plus for our experience at the Confucius Temple! Because it was past the summer holidays, there weren't many tourists, which made it a really pleasant experience. Mr. Li spoke softly and gently, making the explanations very comfortable, and the content was rich and interactive. Highly recommended!

They're all imitation ancient buildings, one large courtyard, overly commercialized. The back garden is alright, but the Confucius Mansion in the Three Confucius Sites area isn't good value for money. It's not as nice as the Confucius Temple.

The Confucius Cemetery, originally called the Sacred Forest, is located 1.5 kilometers north of Qufu City, Jining, Shandong Province. It is the family cemetery of Confucius and his descendants. Construction began in the 16th year of Duke Ai of Lu during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (479 BC). After more than 2,500 years of development, it has now become a vast garden covering approximately 2 square kilometers, making it the world's longest-lasting, largest, and best-preserved clan cemetery. The Confucius Cemetery is not only a solemn mausoleum but also a "natural museum" rich in cultural connotations and a "chronicle of the Confucius family."

The visitor center's parking lot is very large and well-planned, allowing for quick entry and exit even during the National Day holiday. A short bus ride of about ten minutes from the visitor center takes you to the scenic area, which is very beautiful. Located right next to the reservoir, it features a lake, architecture, and stunning scenery. Inside the Nishan Academy, you can watch exciting acrobatic performances. The five halls representing benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness within the academy are enormous and impressive, each with its own unique design. The visit concluded with a spectacular fountain and fireworks show in the evening, making it a very satisfying experience for visitors.

The hotel is located within the scenic area and has its own parking lot. On our first day, they gave us snacks and drinks, and when we left, they gave us a souvenir—a copy of the Analects of Confucius. The hotel was very clean and tidy, and they upgraded our room for free. Overall, it exceeded our expectations and is a great place to stay when visiting the Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, and Confucius Cemetery.

A single ticket to Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden grants access for three days, which is very convenient! 👍 There are so many attractions inside! We spent two days there, enjoying all the attractions and watching performances like "Yue Fei's Spear Against Little Liang Wang" and "The Defense of Bianjing (Kaifeng) in the Northern Song Dynasty." It made me deeply appreciate the happiness of living in the present moment! Cherish and be grateful! 🙏🙏🙏

The Yan Temple was built to commemorate Yan Hui and is a free attraction. It's a ten-minute walk from the east gate of the Confucius Temple. The archway at the entrance dates back to the Ming Dynasty, while the Louxiang Well is even older. Although the Leting Pavilion and Fusheng Hall are reconstructions, they are very well-preserved. My middle school student had just studied a classical Chinese essay about Yan Hui last semester, so the experience was excellent. Overall, it's worth a visit.
