Hells of Beppu

5.6
4.3/5
433 reviews

Hells of Beppu is a famous hot spring in the Beppu area, and was chosen by the Japanese as the best hot spring in Western Japan. The most popular hot spring is the Eight Hells Hot Spring. The Eight Hells Hot Springs are: Sea Hell, Ghost Stone Fangzhou Hell, Mountain Hell, Stove Hell, Ghost Mountain Hell, White Pool Hell, Blood Pool Hell, and Tornado Hell. Sea Hell is the big one, and the distinctive one is Blood Pool Hell. It is famous for its "red hot spring", which is blood-red water that Japanese Buddhists believe to be a torrent from the underworld. "Blood Pond Ointment", made from the red clay of the blood pond, can treat athlete's foot and is popular in Japan. We also can't forget the Ghost Mountain Hell, also known as "Crocodile Hell". Currently, the crocodile farm in it is raising about 100 crocodiles of three kinds. During winter nights, keepers patrol every three hours to watch for crocodiles crawling out of the hot springs. Also surprising is the piranhas kept in the Wade White Pool Hell Garden, but what is fascinating is the "color-changing water", the water sprayed from the hot spring changes from colorless and transparent to blue-white when it falls into the pool..Hell is a name given to hot springs since ancient times, reserved locally to represent the long history of the hot spring town. The reason why hot springs are called "Hell" is that the place after a volcanic eruption is very similar to the landscape of Buddhist hell, because it is smokey and grass does not grow, so people are frightened. In Beppu, you can use hot spring water to make canned soft drinks, and use the free steam to cook rice directly. Locals use natural geothermal heat to make the famous steamed hell dish. The cooking method is very simple. Fresh seafood and vegetables are steamed in hot springs up to 100 ° C. Most of the nearby restaurants offer this. A kind of buffet. Steamed hell of cooking.

Oita Marine Palace Aquarium "Umitamago"

142 reviews

Located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture, the Oita Marine Palace Aquarium Umitamago is a popular aquarium situated in a beautiful location overlooking Beppu Bay. It is a popular interactive facility where visitors can learn about marine life while interacting with them. After being renovated and reopened in 2004, it has expanded its exhibits and performances beyond the traditional "just looking" experience, based on the concept of "an aquarium where you can become friends with animals." Upon entering the aquarium, the first thing that catches your eye is the large "Grand Circulating Tank." Here, schools of yellowtail and horse mackerel swim leisurely, giving you the feeling of being immersed in the ocean. There are also corners that showcase jellyfish and small fish in a fantastical way, and a "Touching Pool" that recreates a tidal flat where you can actually touch starfish and sea cucumbers, allowing both children and adults to learn about marine life while having fun. One of the biggest attractions of Umitamago Aquarium is the animal performances. The dolphin and seal shows are especially popular, and the synchronized performances with the trainers are truly spectacular. The comical and adorable walrus show is also not to be missed. Furthermore, outside the aquarium there is an area called "Asobeach," which recreates a sandy beach and shallow waters, allowing visitors to have a special experience where they can get much closer to the dolphins and seals. Furthermore, the aquarium places great importance on its educational aspects, offering extensive exhibits and explanations on marine environment and wildlife conservation. A major feature of this aquarium is that visitors can experience the importance of nature while having fun. The surrounding area is also very attractive as a tourist spot, with Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Park nearby, where you can see groups of Japanese macaques. It's highly recommended to visit in conjunction with sightseeing in Beppu Onsen or Yufuin. Umitamago is a place where you can have an experience that combines relaxation, wonder, and learning, and it continues to be loved by a wide range of people, from families and couples to tourists. Why not spend a special time while experiencing the charm of the underwater world with all your senses?

Beppu Onsen is renowned for the "Eight Hells of Beppu." The so-called "Eight Hells" is the collective name for Beppu, Myoban, Kannawa, Horita, Shibaseki, Kankaiji, Kamegawa, and Hamawaki. Each hot spring has its own distinctive features. Kannawa Onsen is a lively hot spring famous for its therapeutic bathing, and its steam springs are also quite renowned. Myoban Onsen gets its white color from alum content, and its standout feature is the "hot spring flower huts" with uniquely strange straw roofs; Shibaseki Onsen is located in a quiet ravine, with spring water gushing from rock crevices in the mountains. Shibaseki Onsen boasts pleasant scenery, where you can fully immerse yourself in the beautiful views and experience the lofty realm of finding joy beyond the mere act of soaking!

If you don't have time to visit all the hell hot springs, it is recommended to visit "Stove Hell" once, because there are six hell landscapes here at the same time! In addition to the mini version of Blood Pond, White Pond, and Ghost Stone Square Master Hell, the beautiful one, the tiffany blue hot spring water will change color in different colors during the day, coupled with the heat rising from the lake, it is very charming. In addition to providing a variety of hell landscapes, Kitchen Hell also has hot spring water to drink! The hot spring water that has just been scooped out is slightly hot, with a faint smell of sulfur, which can help digestion. It doesn't matter if you don't drink the hot spring water. There is this steam hot spring next to it. It is said that you can use your throat to absorb the steam emitted by the geothermal heat, and you can also maintain health. The snack kiosk here also offers "Hell Steam", including steamed corn, steamed buns, etc., at reasonable prices.

Having previously visited Iceland, I found the Hells of Beppu quite underwhelming. It had more of a theme park vibe rather than natural beauty. We bought the combined ticket to visit all 7 hells and out of all of them, for me, only Umi Jigoku was wow. I was most disappointed with they geyser at Tatsumaki Jigoku (tornado hell). The top of it has a stone mantle so it doesn’t shoot up very high. The entrance price is very reasonable and savings to be had when buying the combined ticket. You need cash to buy any snacks or drinks in the hells (no suica or other cards accepted). I can recommend the steamed sweet potato cakes and the sweet potato ice cream. We visited ourselves by local bus (very easy) rather than a tour but found the directions for some of the hells not very clear or obvious. There were also free hot spring foot baths in a couple of the hells which was lovely after a lot of walking. An interesting place to visit but not what I expected based on articles I’d read beforehand.

Beppu Onsen, also known as Beppu Hatto, consists of eight hot spring towns, each with its own characteristics. Beppu's geothermal phenomena are rich and varied, and the amount of water and the richness of minerals are second to none. Few places in the world can compare with it. The spring water in each place has different spring qualities and different therapeutic effects.

There's a direct bus from Oita Airport to the park, but it only runs once a day in the morning. It was so hot that we only went on a few rides before leaving. The rides were okay, but they were geared towards younger children. We also had lunch there.

Kamado Jigoku is about a 5-minute walk from Umi Jigoku and Onishibozu Jigoku. Multiple hot springs are separated into blocks, and experience corners such as "drinkable hot springs" and "steam baths" are unique to this place. Next to the shop and eat-in space where you can eat soy sauce pudding and hot spring century eggs, there is also a foot bath. It is a little crowded, but eating and drinking are prohibited in the foot bath area and there is a good turnover, so you can get in quickly. Towels are also available for free rental (other Jigoku are generally purchased for 200 yen). We recommend visiting after Umi Jigoku.

Mount Takasaki, located on the west side of Oita City, is 628 meters above sea level. There are about 1,300 wild Japanese macaques living on the mountain. They are not artificially bred or domesticated, but grow freely and unrestrained on the mountain. It has become Japan's largest free-range wild monkey zoo.
