Lingtong Mountain

4.9/5

Lingtong Mountain is a mountain scenic area shaped by volcanic eruptions over 100 million years ago. Its main peak, Qingtian Peak, stands at an elevation of over 1,200m, facing Daqin Mountain, which is over 1,500m high, across the valley; the mountain is shrouded in clouds and mist all year round and is famous for its four major features: perilous peaks, strange rocks, clear springs, and drifting clouds. It is known as Little Huangshan, and its natural and cultural landscapes have long been described as seven peaks, five cliffs, ten temples, and eighteen scenes. A must-see in the mountain isLingtong Temple, built inside a natural cave: covered by giant rocks above and overlooking steep cliffs below, it is accessible only by climbing a sky ladder stone path, making the temple appear as if it is suspended between the cliff walls. The "Pearl Curtain Turning into Rain" in front of the temple is long-renowned; a clear spring cascades down from a high point, scattering into water droplets that fill the sky, hanging like a beaded curtain in front of the ancient temple, which is especially spectacular when the water volume is high after rain. Viewed from the south, Xiaomao Peak, a mountain hundreds of meters high, resembles the head of a reclining giant Buddha, with distinct contours of the forehead, eyes, nose, and mouth; climbing Qingtian Peak at dawn, the flat and open summit is a natural platform for watching the sunrise and enjoying the sea of clouds. The Ming Dynasty scholar Huang Daozhou studied and lectured in the mountain during his youth, leaving behind the ruins of the Shizhai Study, and he once invited friends like Xu Xiake to tour the mountain. The name "Lingtong" originates from the four characters "Ling Ying Gan Tong" that he inscribed.

Pinghe County Sanping Scenic Area

4.8/5
52 reviews

Sanping Scenic Area is located in Pinghe County, Fujian Province, 47 kilometers away from Zhangzhou City and 30 kilometers away from Pinghe County. It includes the main scenic spots Sanping Temple and the Turtle Snake Peak, Hupao Spring, Monk Pool, Maodi Cave, Hulin, Longrui Waterfall and other attractions outside the temple and the back mountain. There is Sanping Temple in the scenic area. The peaceful Sanping Temple is a temple that many southern Fujian people go to every year, just like Mazu's status in the hearts of Putian people. The temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, and the existing temple was rebuilt in the late Qing Dynasty. The tour sequence in Sanping Temple is "Drum Tower - Daxiong Hall - Jialan Palace - Kaizhang Holy King Hall - Kizang King Hall - Zu Hall - Jianzhai Hall - Tiger Climbing Spring - Pagoda Hall". Among them, the two corridors of the Daxiong Hall are facing each other, and the right corridor wall is inlaid with the inscription on the rebuilding of Sanping Temple compiled during the Qianlong period. In the ancestral hall, there is a long corridor in front of the house, and pilgrims must enter the corridor from the side door to reach here. There is a statue of Yizhong in the hall. It was carved from camphor wood in the Qing Dynasty. It is more than one meter high. The joints of the statue can move, which is unique. The pagoda hall is the last entry of Sanping Temple, and it is also the height of Sanping Temple. The base of the tower hall is two meters high, with double eaves and steps on both sides. There is a relatively smooth terrazzo cage in the middle of the hall. There is a statue sitting in a posture. The statue is beautiful in shape, wearing a monk hat and a cassock, with a kind and amiable face. After visiting Sanping Temple, you can go to other attractions in Sanping Scenic Area. For example, Hupao Spring in the back mountain of Sanping Temple, Maodi Cave in the southeast of the temple, or Longrui Waterfall one kilometer south of the temple. The scenic spots are not very far away and can be reached on foot. It mainly depends on whether the tourists want to enjoy the water or see some cultural landscapes. The legend of Maodi Cave is the place where the Mao people lived, but these attractions are not more than Sanping Temple, they are all small scenic spots to play by the way. If you just want to walk around, the environment is still very good. There are also many tourists who come to Sanping Temple to worship and leave, after all, this is the main purpose of Sanping Scenic Area. When you are tired of playing, you can go to the Sanping family at the bottom of the mountain to eat. Tourists report that this place and dishes are good, for the reference of tourists who want to eat here.

Yunshuiyao Ancient Town

7.8
4.4/5
4.6k reviews

Yunshuiyao Ancient Town was originally named Changjiao, but gained fame after the film "The Knot" was filmed here. The ancient village subsequently adopted the movie's name and has now become a highly popular stop in the Fujian Tulou area. The attraction consists of three parts—Yunshuiyao Ancient Town, Hegui Building, and Huaiyuan Building—stretching along the Changjiao River. The ancient village sits in the middle, with the two tulou buildings at either end of the river, all connected by a walkable route. The five-story Hegui Building stands out with its striking square structure, a rare tall rectangular tulou. What's more remarkable is that it was built entirely on marshland, supported by pinewood piles that have held firm for over 200 years, earning it the nickname "Noah's Ark on land." In its central courtyard lies a small sunken pebble area that remains perpetually damp - stepping on it and gently stomping reveals subtle vibrations beneath your feet. The compound also features two ancient wells positioned close together: one with clear water and the other with turbid water, locally called the "yin-yang wells." In contrast, the Huaiyuan Building embodies a different character. This concentric circular tulou features an ancestral hall named "This Is the Room" at its inner ring's center, which once served as the Jian family's private school. Its intricately carved beams and rafters showcase exquisite craftsmanship, inviting close examination of the tulou's interior artistry. Nestled between buildings, this ancient town invites leisurely exploration: A dozen century-old banyan trees line the stream with aerial roots dipping into the water. Cobblestone paths wind along the bank beside creaking waterwheels, while stone bridges span murmuring streams where white ducks waddle—painting a pastoral scene.

Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) Scenic Area

1.3k reviews

The Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) Scenic Area is nestled among the mountains of Nanjing, Zhangzhou, Fujian, and consists of three major sections: Tianluokeng, Yunshuiyao, and Hekeng Tulou Folk Culture Village. The tulou are large family residences built by the Hakka and Minnan ancestors using rammed earth in mountainous areas. In 2008, the Fujian Tulou, represented by clusters such as Tianluokeng and Hekeng, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, making Nanjing a key destination for tulou exploration. The highlight of the Tianluokeng section is the "Four Dishes and One Soup" tulou cluster: viewed from the observation deck, the square Buyun Building stands at the center, surrounded by three round buildings—Zhenchang, Ruiyun, and Hechang—and the oval Wenchang Building, resembling a set meal from afar. Two other spots in the same section are worth a leisurely visit: Yuchang Building, nicknamed "The Leaning Tower" due to its tilted beams and pillars, has stood firm for over 700 years; in Taxia Village, an S-shaped stream flows through, with round buildings on both banks forming a taiji diagram, while a row of stone flagpoles in front of Deyuan Hall commemorates the Zhang clan's past achievements. The Yunshuiyao section, originally named Changjiao, gained its current name after the film "The Knot" was filmed here. Cobblestone paths wind along the stream, shaded by centuries-old banyan trees, with waterwheels, stone bridges, and old streets creating a laid-back ancient town vibe. Hegui Building here, built on a swamp and standing firm for over 200 years, is called the "Land Noah's Ark," while Huaiyuan Building is a finely crafted double-ring round building. The Hekeng Tulou Folk Culture Village sees fewer visitors, with over a dozen square and round tulou nestled between mountains and water. From the observation deck, their layout resembles the Big Dipper, exuding a lively atmosphere. The three sections are connected by winding mountain roads, so a full day is recommended to explore all; if time is limited, prioritize Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao. The tulou are still inhabited today, so tread lightly when visiting. At mealtime, try Hakka and Minnan-style home-cooked dishes at nearby farmhouses.

Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster

4.5/5
4.1k reviews

The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster is nestled among the mountains of Nanjing, Fujian, and is the iconic architectural complex of Fujian tulou, often referred to as the "calling card" of Fujian tulou. It consists of five three-story tulou buildings: the square Buyun Building at the center, surrounded by the round Zhenchang, Ruiyun, and Hechang Buildings, and the oval Wenchang Building. This layout, with one square building at the center and four round ones encircling it, resembles a dining table setup, earning it the playful nickname "Four Dishes and One Soup." It has also been the ancestral home of the Hakka Huang clan since the Qing Dynasty until its final form in the 1960s. There are two unmissable perspectives to appreciate these tulou clusters: from the hillside viewing platform overlooking five earthen buildings resembling a blooming plum blossom amidst terraced fields—their rammed-earth walls turn golden in the evening light, perfect for photography; or from the valley floor after descending the winding road, where the stepped tulou complex appears to emerge dramatically from the mountainside, often likened by travelers to a "Potala Palace." The shifting roadside views alternately reveal square and round structures in ever-changing compositions. The tulou still houses the Huang family today, with laundry drying in the courtyard, chickens and ducks strolling through the alleys, and cooking smoke rising behind the yellow walls—a living tableau of Hakka life. The central Buyun building, constructed during the Qing dynasty, bears the name "Buyun" (ascending to the clouds), embodying the clan's hope for their descendants to excel in studies and official careers. Stepping inside and gazing up at the tiered wooden corridors, one can truly experience the spatial layout of communal living.

The national 4A-level scenic spot, the thousand-year-old temple (Sanping Temple), is dedicated to the Tang Dynasty monk Yang Yizhong, who saved all living beings and blessed all directions. The scenic area is beautiful with green mountains and clear waters, and shady trees. It is a good place worth worshipping and vacationing!

Sanping Temple, located in Pinghe County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, is dedicated to Sanping Patriarch, also known as Master Guangji by the Minnan people. Sanping Temple is located in the deep mountains and dense forests of Pinghe, with high mountains and long roads. When there was no direct road, believers in the Minnan area came to worship on foot, which shows the depth of their faith. The temple is simple and natural, with the gold-painted sculptures in the hall and the painted sculptures on the eaves, all vivid; the red bricks, green tiles, and granite foundation stones all reflect the local characteristics and superb traditional skills of Minnan architecture.

[Scenery] Lingtong Mountain is just opposite, and it only takes half an hour to drive there. The scenery is beautiful. [Fun] There are five or six projects, and the main water slides and ropeways are worth buying and experiencing. Very exciting. [Value for money] It's OK! Although the price is a bit high, it's more private and you need to direct yourself, so it's still worth it. The service is good!

Four dishes and one soup, truly living up to the name. From above, it looks like a standard four dishes and one soup; but on site, each dish is unique and wonderful, with round, square, and oval shapes, organically combining different styles, fully demonstrating the superb wisdom of people in the past.
