Nan'ao Island is an island county located on the border between Guangdong Province and Fujian Province. Nan'ao Island has not been opened up extensively. The scenery still retains its original natural beauty. The sea water is clear and the sand quality is superior. In addition to the natural landscape, the island contains historical sites such as the Nan'ao Zongbingfu and the Song well. This place has many kinds of seafood, which is tasty and inexpensive. So this is a great place to eat seafood while watching the sea.Nan'ao County · 4.2 km from downtown

Queshi Scenic Spot

4.5/5
677 reviews
Queshi scenic area is located in Haojiang District on the south bank of the inner bay of Shantou, facing the old city across the sea. The character "Que" originally means "stone mountain". The mountain is covered with granite, which has been weathered over a long period of time, forming a continuous range of stone egg-shaped hills. Strange peaks, secluded valleys, and bizarre rocks are framed together with the bay scenery, and mountains, sea, rocks, and caves make up a beautiful landscape. The attraction consists of six sections: Xiaoshi, Tashan, Yanfeng, Xianglushan, Bijiashan, and Su'an. Among them, Tashan and Yanfeng are more developed and are the main destinations for most tourists. The attraction is divided into six attractions, namely Xiaoshi attraction, Queshi Tashan attraction, Yanfeng attraction, Xianglu Mountain, Bijia Mountain attraction, and Su'an attraction. Among them, Xianglu attraction and Bijia Mountain attraction are currently under development. You can choose to visit the remaining four attractions based on your preference, with Queshi Tashan attraction and Yanfeng attraction being the main highlights. This is because Queshi Tashan attraction is relatively more developed, while Yanfeng attraction is another well-developed attraction, which is comparatively larger—about three times the size of Queshi Tashan attraction—and notably features the natural scenery of Dream Valley. Tashan mountain is renowned for its secluded rock caves and cliff inscriptions, with attractions like Shuilian cave, Taohua stream, and Liudan pavilion scattered across its slopes. Its highlight is Chuihong cave—a series of interconnected caverns naturally formed by stacked granite boulders, where large and small rocks cluster chaotically along the ceilings and walls like a stone corridor. Visitors crawl through the cave and emerge halfway up the mountain; further up lies Piaoran pavilion at Tashan's summit. This two-story, six-pillared pavilion offers panoramic views of Shantou's inner bay and the city skyline opposite, making it perpetually popular. The quieter Mengou pavilion lies not far along the hiking trail. Visitors can choose the cable car or slide for ascent/descent, or hike the entire route. The least strenuous option is taking the cable car up and descending through Chuihong cave's rocky passage. The Flame peak area is much more open than Ta mountain, with its signature attraction being Dream valley: in the 1920s, writer Xiao Qian fell in love with a Chaoshan girl in Queshi and later wrote the novel "Dream valley" based on this experience. The valley features lush trees and serene streams, offering a different kind of rustic charm beyond rock and sea views. The attraction also preserves Western-style old buildings from the port-opening era, such as the former British consulate and Queshi church. After admiring the mountains and sea, these colonial-era structures present another unique aspect that distinguishes Queshi from ordinary mountain-sea attractions. To the left, a 5-minute walk leads to Chuihong Cave. This naturally formed granite cave complex features stacked boulders of varying sizes along its ceiling and walls, creating a stone corridor. Climbing through the cave is akin to ascending a mountain, as the exit actually nears the summit. Not far from Chui Hong Cave is the mountaintop viewing platform Piao Ran Pavilion, where you can overlook the panoramic view of Shantou, but this spot tends to be crowded. The Meng Ou Pavilion on the western side is quieter, and the distance between the two can be covered in approx. 10 mins on foot. After visiting, you can choose to take the slideway down the mountain.Shantou · 2.5 km from downtown

Shantou Small Park, the commercial center and cultural center of the old city of Shantou, is the core landmark and cultural symbol of the old city of Shantou. A small park in a narrow sense refers to the Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion at the core of the small park area. The small park in a broad sense covers the neighborhoods around the Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion, including Anping Road, Shengping Road, Guoping Road, etc., collectively referred to as the small park historical and cultural area. The arcades and streets in the small park area basically imitate the style of Parisian blocks, and are distributed radially in a fan shape; plus the old neighborhoods on both sides "Si Yong Yi Sheng Ping", the old "Yanchengtou" in the east, the red pavilion in the north, and the "Ping" in the south. Shantou Port” has formed a prosperous commercial area and residential area with the architectural characteristics of the 1930s. The department store in the area is 7-storey high. Its predecessor was the "Nansheng Company" founded by the Overseas Chinese Group in 1932. It was the second tallest building in Shantou before liberation, and was one of the symbols of old Shantou's landmark buildings and small parks.Shantou · 843m from downtown

Qing'ao Bay is to Shantou what Yalong Bay National Resort is to Sanya. This bay on the eastern side of Nan'ao Island leaves a strong impression with its crystal-clear blue waters and fine sandy beaches. As one of the most beautiful bays on Nan'ao Island, it serves as a primary destination for many visitors. After arriving on the island by boat, you can take the island loop bus directly at the ferry terminal, which will take you to the attraction. The bay of the attraction faces southeast with a deep basin, spanning 2.9 km in arc length. Viewed from above, it resembles a crescent moon, with rows of casuarina trees stretching along the curved beach. The waves, white sand, forest belt, and newly built pavilions within the woods create a picturesque scene by the shore. The beach here has a gentle slope extending into the sea with shallow coastal waters, making it an ideal bathing beach perfect for swimming. This is also a great area to stay. Most travelers visiting the island choose either Hap Mun Bay or this area for check-in. If you want ocean views, this location is more suitable than Hap Mun Bay.Nan'ao County · 11.5 km from downtown

Tropic of Cancer Tower -"The Gate of Nature" is located in Qing 'ao Bay at the eastern end of Nan Ao Island. It is the 11th Tropic of Cancer marker tower built in China so far. This is the unique scenery of Nan Ao on the Tropic of Cancer and is bound to play an important role in the research of the world's astronomy and geography communities. When the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer, the shadow of the sun will pass through the central tube of the upper sphere and project onto the center of the platform, which is one of the new attractions in Nan Ao. Shantou Mayu Island Scenic Area

5.1
4.3/5

Shantou Mayu Island Scenic Area is located at the mouth of Shantou Port, covering an area of 1 square kilometer. The island has a beach bathing area and accommodation facilities. Because it faces the open sea, the water is clean, making it a popular summer destination for locals. There are twoLaoma Palaceson the island, built in the Yuan and Qing dynasties respectively, hence the name Mayu. The island is also known as "Fangji Island" because in the old days, ships passing by would release a live chicken at theLaoma Palace. Over time, the island became a kingdom of chickens. In 1860, the British established a customs office here and carried out brutal plunder of the local area. The colonialists also gathered and shipped out laborers from here. Many were tortured to death before they could even board the ships, and a large number of laborers' remains have been excavated on the island, serving as solid evidence of the imperialist powers' invasion of China. The highest point on the island is 41 m above sea level, which is a natural pier for the Shantou Bay Bridge. A giantGoddess Statueis also built on the mountain. Mayin Stone: At the dock, there is a dark brown stone in the sea. It is not impressive in appearance, but locals call it Mayin Stone. It is said to be a relic left when Mazu transformed into a deity and entered the sea. Strangely enough, this Mayin Stone always floats on the sea surface regardless of the tide, and is never submerged. Tianhou Palace (Shengping Road): Built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368), it is one of the earliestLaoma Palacesalong the eastern coast of Guangdong. In the 48th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, He Binchen, the deputy commander of Nan'ao, expanded it, and the inscription he wrote is a historical treasure of theAncestral Mazu Temple, which has been re-carved and embedded in the wall. It was rebuilt in the 11th year of the Xianfeng reign, expanded in 1928, donated by Hong Kong compatriots in 1984, and completed on the "Mazu Birthday" in 1993. The temple covers an area of 335 square meters, grand and elegant, with a stone archway, a grand stage, a statue of the God of Longevity, pavilions, a corridor of steles, and a three-dimensional floating porcelain platform for releasing chickens. Laoma Palace: Built in the Qing Dynasty. It is said that a man surnamed Wu from Quanzhou, who came to Shantou to run a foreign firm, asked a geomancer to choose a site a few dozen meters away from Tianhou Palace (Shengping Road) as a cemetery. When Wu came to see the site, he saw a large incense burner. After asking around, he learned that it belonged toLaoma Palaceand had "flown here by itself." He then took the lead in donating money, and after more than 3 years,Laoma Palacewas built here, on a larger scale than the old one. In 1983, led by the municipal tourism company, Mr. Zhang Huaxiong, a Puning native and Thai Chinese, donated more than 70,000 yuan, and the company also donated approx. 10,000 yuan for a joint renovation. In the same year, an inscription written by Zhang Huayun and calligraphed by Gao Yu was erected in front of the temple. The door wall retains the Qing Dynasty style, built with more than 100 carved stones and standard stones, which is full of antique charm. The dragon pillars are exquisitely crafted, the inlaid porcelain is colorful and beautiful, and the wood carvings are extremely skillful. Dragon King Temple: This is a rare temple in Fujian and Guangdong. Located behind the Mazu Palace Stage, it was built in the early Qing Dynasty and repaired when Tianhou Palace (Shengping Road) was rebuilt in the 11th year of the Xianfeng reign. In 1988, Zhang Defa, the head of Beihai Temple in Singapore, dreamed that the Dragon King asked him to return to the motherland to repair the temple. He first returned to his hometown in Fujian to search for the temple but found nothing. Later, he heard that there was a temple onMayu Island. He landed on the island and indeed found it. He then took the lead and mobilized a total of 108 overseas Chinese to donate for its renovation, which was completed on November 2, 1989. The temple is famous for its exquisite inlaid porcelain, such as double dragons vying for a pearl, flowers and birds, and heroes, created by the famous Xu Mei family (deceased) and his son, which are shining. It is one of the representative works of contemporary Chaozhou and Shantou crafts. Goddess Statue of the Ancient Mazu Temple: The statue is located more than 100 m south ofMazu Temple, facing the sea.Mazu Temple, as the main worship place, was designed by Shantou Arts and Crafts School and carefully carved by the Chongwu Fengyuan Stone Carving Factory in Hui'an County, Fujian Province, to retain the nostalgia of overseas Chinese and connect their hometown feelings. The statue of the goddess of the ancient Mazu Temple, made of 108 stone carvings, symbolizes 108 peace doves to be released, praying for calm seas in Shantou Port, national prosperity and peace, and world peace. East China Sea Putuo Mountain Temple: Located at the southeast wall ofLaoma Palace, it was built in the Jiawu year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1774). The existing main hall is covered with a canopy to house the Buddha statue for worship. The government religious department has approved the reconstruction, and funds are being raised. Two important cultural relics inscriptions have survived. One is the temple plaque "East China Sea Putuo Mountain", with small inscriptions above and below reading "Respectfully inscribed by Yao Gao, the general commander of the Guangdong Nan'ao garrison" and "Established on the auspicious day of the second month in the 39th year of the Qianlong reign (1775)". The other is the "Pagoda of the Founder of Three Temples, Zheng Rui and Gong" stele, which records that the great monk Zheng Rui founded three temples (one of which is the East China Sea Putuo Mountain Temple), revived five temples, built more than 50 li of roads, and repaired more than 70 bridges, which can be regarded as great virtues. Customs: This is the new Chaozhou Customs, managed by the Chinese, also known as the "Native Customs", consisting of two stone bungalows onYingzi Mountain. In the third year of the Xianfeng reign (1853), trade between Chaozhou and Hong Kong surged, soGuangdong Customsset upCustomsonMayu Island, building two bungalows of 150 square meters each (a municipal cultural relic protection unit). SinceCustomshad already been set up in Anbu, the one onMayu Islandwas called the "New Chaozhou Customs". In the second year of the Tongzhi reign (1863), it was moved to Shantou, and in 1901 it was taken over by the Chaozhou Customs. Seven years later, on the south side of the island near the sea, the Chaozhou Customs was established, managed by foreigners, so it was also called the "Foreign Customs". A two-story foreign-style building was built for the foreign chief customs officer and others to live in (demolished in 2002), and a two-story large building was built nearby for theCustomspersonnel to live in (commonly known as the "Pilot Building", demolished in 1991 because it was a dangerous building). Natural Seawater Bathing Beach: The bathing beach is located on the southeast side, offering a distant view of Nan'ao Island and a close view of Luyu Island. It is a crescent-shaped bay about 100 m long. The beach is flat and white, and the sea water is clear and green, making it a natural bathing pool. On both sides are the Feng and Luan mountains, with grotesque rocks in various shapes. In the middle of the beach, a small stone peak rises, with cracks like petals, so it is called "Peony Peak", forming a beautiful scene of "Phoenix and Luan facing the Peony" with the mountains on the left and right. The casuarina trees on the top of the beach form a green belt, providing shade for swimmers. The shower room, dining room, and restaurant provide various conveniences for swimmers. The sea-eroded rocks on the beach are engraved with poems by Lai Shaoyi praising Mazu, "Wonderful Peaks of the South Island" by Zeng Ming, and "Listening to the Waves" by Chen Dayu, adding splendor to the island. In addition, there areShuangzhong Temple,Bogong Temple,Friendship Pavilion, Sea-Viewing Pavilion, Zuichao Tower, and the nearby Luyu Lighthouse and other ancient and new attractions, which are numerous and beautiful. Now, with convenient transportation, you can park at the west side of the Shantou Bay Bridge and take a boat for approx. 1 km to reach the island, which has become a hot spot for Chaozhou and Shantou tourism.Shantou · 7.4 km from downtown

We didn't catch any squid, but the owner helped us by casting a net every half hour, bringing up quite a few. We had a barbecue on the boat, which was a nice way to relax and have some fun in the evening. Even though we didn't catch any fish, we still had a barbecue and seafood porridge dinner.

Shantou Xiaogongyuan (Little Park) is located in the Shantou Port Opening Area, centrally situated at the intersection of Guoping Road, Shengping Road, and Anping Road in Jinping District, Shantou City, Guangdong Province. Starting from the "Sun Yat-sen Memorial Pavilion," a series of arcade-style streets named "Siyong Yishengping" radiate outwards in a ring, forming a city block. It boasts the largest collection of modern arcade buildings in China, most of which were invested and built by overseas Chinese who returned to their hometowns after venturing to Southeast Asia in earlier years. It's definitely worth a visit!

Shantou's Old Town is a treasure trove steeped in time, a fusion of Baroque arcades and Nanyang-style architecture. The aging bricks and tiles hold memories of a prosperous century-old commercial port. The aroma of local delicacies like Chaoshan beef balls and rice noodles fills the air, while details like the inlaid porcelain of the Guanyin Temple and the dome of the General Post Office are stunning. The free admission streets are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Despite signs of commercial transformation, the authentic atmosphere and rich history of the city remain. A two-day experience offers a chance to deeply experience the mysteries of the mountains and sea, and the memories of the city.

There are so many rooms that it's easy to get lost. A large area at the back is closed, with only a small section open, but it's still quite unique. There aren't many explanations, so it's a little disorienting. There are plenty of coffee shops inside, so you can always grab a bite.

There aren't many attractions on Nan'ao Island besides the beach. I made a special trip to the General's Mansion, the only one of its kind on a Chinese island. It's incredibly small, though. You can see the contents of a few houses and finish in half an hour. I wouldn't recommend it if you're on a limited island trip. The scenery along the way is nice though.

It's a very beautiful little park. After seeing the Song Well, lying on the big rocks by the sea and sunbathing was so relaxing. The park also has many impressive trees that grow around huge rocks. These parks still retain the feeling of the parks from my childhood, which is why I love Nan'ao Island.
