West Lake is undoubtedly the epitome of Hangzhou's beauty. The famous "Ten Scenes of West Lake" surround the lake, where nature and culture complement each other, forming the core area of Hangzhou tourism. You don't have to be obsessed with visiting every single attraction; instead, you can spend half a day or a whole day strolling along the lake. No matter how you enjoy yourself, it will leave you feeling relaxed and happy. West Lake Scenic Area is the core of Hangzhou's landscape, "surrounded by mountains on three sides and the city on one side." The Su Causeway and Bai Causeway stretch across the lake, dividing it into several smaller sections. The most famous scenic spots around the lake are the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" passed down from the Southern Song Dynasty. In addition to the later New Ten Scenes of West Lake and the Third Evaluation of the Ten Scenes of West Lake, hundreds of scenic spots are laid out along the lake shore and the surrounding mountains. Pavilions, temples, pagodas, gardens, causeways, islands, and distant mountains and nearby waters complement each other. Legends such as the Broken Bridge where Lady White Snake and Xu Xian met add a touch of history to the lake and mountains. The West Lake Scenic Area has more than 100 scenic spots, among which the "Ten Scenes of West Lake", the "New Ten Scenes of West Lake", and the "Three Appraisals of the Ten Scenes of West Lake" are famous. West Lake Overview You can explore West Lake on foot, by cruise, by electric cart, by car, or by cycling. Electric carts are convenient and energy-saving; there are shuttle buses that stop on demand, and the route circles the entire lake. cycling along the lake is romantic and leisurely, and there are many public bicycle rental points along the shore. If you want to take a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks along the lake, offering various boats and routes. A recommended option is to take a boat to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon in the center of the lake, enjoying the scenery from the boat. Alternatively, you can hire a rowboat and have a boatman row you around the lake for a more flexible experience. Northern scenery The north bank of West Lake is home to many attractions. You can usually start from Broken Bridge in the northeast corner and stroll westward to Yue Fei Temple. You can walk along Bai Causeway to Gushan Island and see cultural attractions such as Xiling Seal Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, China Seal Museum, and Zhongshan Park - Fanghe Pavilion. You can also enjoy authentic West Lake Vinegar Fish at Lou Wai Lou Restaurant. After crossing Xiling Bridge to the island, Yue Fei Temple and Quyuan Fenghe are not far away. If it's a sunny summer day, I recommend taking a walk along Beishan Road. Find shade under the dense trees and admire the curves of the Broken Bridge and the swaying willows on the opposite Bai Causeway. There are several entrances along the way leading to Baoshi Mountain, where you can hike and enjoy the scenery. Descending the mountain will take you to Yue Fei Temple. There are many small shops offering food at Yue Fei Square. If you have the time and energy, you can also walk up Su Causeway from there for a panoramic view of West Lake. Southeast coast (Lakeside - Nanshan Road) Another area with a high concentration of attractions is the Hubin Road-Nanshan Road along the southeast shore. Hubin Road is located at the intersection of Hangzhou's urban area and the attraction, offering views of West Lake, docks for West Lake cruise, and the iconic musical fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is that it provides quick access from the attraction to the city center's commercial districts, making it suitable for tourists with limited time. Heading south from Hubin Road along Nanshan Road, you can visit attractions such as Willow Waves Listening to Orioles, Long Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, Evening Bell at Nanping Hill, and Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor. The distances between these attractions are not far, making them easily accessible on foot. Sightseeing buses and public transportation are also readily available. You can allocate a day to visit several attractions according to your preferences. Leifeng Pagoda and Evening Bell at Nanping Hill are particularly worthwhile in the evening; listening to the bell at Jingci Temple and enjoying the panoramic night view of West Lake from Leifeng Pagoda are both fantastic experiences.China · Hangzhou

Mount Huangshan Scenic Area

Mount Huangshan Scenic Area is located in Tangkou Town, Huangshan District, Huangshan City. Since ancient times, Mount Huangshan has been one of China's most renowned mountains. Its peculiar pines, strange rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs are known as the "Four Wonders" of Mount Huangshan. In addition to these, rime, snowscapes, and sunrises are also views that visitors will not miss. There is an ancient saying: "Having visited the Five Great Mountains, one need not look at any other mountains; having visited Mount Huangshan, one need not look at the Five Great Mountains." The attraction is divided into the south gate, west gate, and north gate. The vast majority of visitors enter and exit through the south gate, which has two entrances and exits—front mountain and back mountain—both close to Tangkou Town at the foot of the mountain. The town has also become a transfer hub for visiting Huangshan, and many visitors arrive here in advance to stay overnight. From Tangkou Town to the attraction entrance, you need to take the Huangshan New National Line shuttle bus, which stops at the front mountain gate (Ciguang Pavilion), the back mountain gate (Yungu Temple), and the Huangshan-Hot Spring attraction. Visiting the attraction mainly involves two routes up the mountain, the front mountain and the back mountain, both leading to one of the main peaks, Bright Summit. On the other side of Bright Summit, there is also a loop route — the West Sea Grand Canyon. Front mountain The front mountain refers to the hiking route starting from Ciguang Pavilion to Yuping Tower at the summit (accessible directly by the Yuping Cable Car), as well as the Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Lotus Peak and Tiandu Peak areas at the summit. The scenery of the front mountain is grand and majestic, making it very suitable for enjoying panoramic views from the cable car. Both the highest peak, Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Lotus Peak, and the other main peak, Tiandu Peak, are located here (the two peaks open alternately). There are also classic attractions such as the Guest-Greeting Pine, Jiulong Peak - Carp Back, Hundred-Step Ladder, One-Line Sky, and Tianhai. Back mountain The back mountain refers to the hiking route from Yungu Temple to Bai'e Ridge (accessible directly by the Mount Huangshan Yungu Cableway), as well as the mountaintop areas behind Bai'e Ridge such as Shixin Peak, Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Shizi Peak, and West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion. The scenery of the back mountain consists mostly of exquisite mountain views, suitable for enjoying on foot along the way. Flying Stone and Monkey Watching the Sea are both located here. West sea grand canyon West sea grand canyon officially opened in 2000. The canyon is deep and the scenery is very magnificent, and it is known as the true gathering place of Huangshan's essential scenery. West sea grand canyon can be entered from West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion in the summit area of the back mountain, and after looping around inside the canyon, you return to the main peak area of Tianhai. It takes about 2 hours to walk down from West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion to the bottom of the canyon, and then you can take a cable car to Tianhai. Route recommendations The standard way to visit Huangshan is a two-day tour, with routes divided into ascending via the front mountain and descending via the back mountain (front mountain - West Sea Grand Canyon - back mountain) or ascending via the back mountain and descending via the front mountain (back mountain - West Sea Grand Canyon - front mountain). Ascending via the front mountain and descending via the back mountain is suitable for taking the cable car up and walking down, which is both relaxing and allows you to enjoy the exquisite scenery of the latter half. However, since the essential route of the West Sea Grand Canyon runs from West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion to Tianhai, you will have to backtrack along a section of the trail. It is possible to visit Huangshan in just one day, but the itinerary will be tight. It is recommended to ascend via the rear mountain and descend via the front mountain, taking the cable car both ways, and to either skip climbing the main peaks of the front mountain (Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Lotus Peak / Tiandu Peak) or skip the West Sea Grand Canyon. Stay selection There are several accommodation options at the summit, mainly concentrated in areas such as Guangming Peak Tianhai, West Sea Grand Canyon-Paiyun Pavilion, Bai'e Ridge, and North Sea. Guangming Peak Tianhai is a great spot for watching the sunrise, and it is also suitable for storing luggage while exploring the West Sea Grand Canyon. Bai'e Ridge is the upper station of the Huangshan Yungu Cableway on the rear mountain; if you typically enter the attraction from the rear mountain in the afternoon, staying here is quite convenient.Huangshan City · 65.3 km from Shitai

Wangxian Valley

Wangxian Valley is located at the northern foot of Lingshan Mountain, hidden among mountain streams and gorges. It was formerly an abandoned granite quarry and, after years of ecological restoration, has been built into the valley town it is today. The attraction is structured around the Jiuniu Stream Gorge, where streams flow through the valley and waterfalls cascade in layers; the Sandie Waterfall and Sankou Pot are among its most recognizable natural views. In summer, visitors can also experience gorge rafting that winds through the ancient town. The cliffside building complex on Baihe Cliff is the attraction's signature view. On the nearly 100-meter-high cliff face, cantilevered guest rooms, plank walkways, and viewing platforms climb upward in a zigzag pattern, looking up from the valley floor like pavilions in the sky. After nightfall, the cliff lights come on one after another, and the entire valley resembles a painted scroll of lights; standing on Lanyue Bridge and gazing at the full panorama of Baihe Cliff is a classic photo spot here. The Yanpu Old Street in the valley restores the appearance of traditional dwellings in northeastern Jiangxi, with rammed earth walls, bluestone slab paths, and horse-head walls interwoven throughout. Workshop Street is lined with traditional handicraft workshops for brown sugar, brewing, papermaking, cloth dyeing, and more, where you can watch ancient production methods on site; Mingchan Alley gathers intangible cultural heritage crafts such as bamboo weaving and woodwork. Bawei Street offers a dazzling array of Jiangxi-style snacks such as dengzhan guo and taro dumplings. When visiting, it is recommended to enter the attraction in the afternoon so that you can clearly see the gorge landforms in daylight without missing the spectacular lighting after nightfall. The entire route requires walking and climbing stairs, so comfortable, slip-resistant shoes are advisable.China · Shangrao

Wuyuan Huangling Scenic Area

4.6/5

Wuyuan Huangling Scenic Area sits among the Shi'er Mountains of Wuyuan, with the ancient village of Huangling at its core—a Huizhou ancient village nearly six hundred years old. The village is built along steep mountain slopes, where "there is no flat ground three chi wide"; residences are arranged in a fan-shaped, terraced layout around the water outlet, with white walls and dark tiles layered one upon another on the cliffside, earning it the name "Tiyun Renjia" (Households in the Terraced Clouds). Surrounded by ancient trees and terraced fields, it is itself a three-dimensional painting of a mountain village. Huangling is the birthplace of the "shaiqiu" (autumn sun-drying) culture. Constrained by the terrain, villagers have since ancient times set up drying racks on rooftops to dry crops; every fall, red chili peppers, yellow chrysanthemums, pumpkins, and more fill the rooftop drying trays, with colors shifting as the seasons change. In spring, rapeseed flowers bloom in layers across ten thousand mu of terraced fields, dotted with pink peach blossoms and snow-white pear blossoms; the lower-elevation first-phase flower sea and the higher-elevation second-phase Gaoling flower sea bloom in succession, with the flowering period lasting into April. Riding the cable car up the mountain, visitors can overlook the entire golden flower field, and the view is especially open when passing the Leixin Bridge glass walkway, with layered terraced fields and distant mountains below. Tianjie in the village is the main sightseeing axis paved with bluestone slabs, linking classic Huizhou-style ancient buildings; shops line the street with workshops behind storefronts, and along the way visitors can taste authentic Wuyuan snacks such as steamed cakes, Qingming guo, and huizhi guo, and also take part in making folk snacks and handicrafts. Visiting in fall, besides the spectacular shaiqiu scene, the village's red maples are also a highlight, with maple forests fully tinted and echoing the harvest colors drying on the rooftops. Throughout the year, Huangling has something to offer in every season, and its core charm always lies in the unique Huizhou everyday vitality of this mountain village.China · Wuyuan

Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area is located west of West Lake Scenic Area, including Lingyin Temple andFeilai peakTwo main views.Feilai peakNot large or tall, yet it gathers hundreds of statues of bodhisattvas and eminent monks from different dynasties, creating a beauty of fusion. The Lingyin Temple in the mountains is a famous ancient temple in Hangzhou, bustling with incense offerings. Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area itself is not very large, and you can explore it on foot. After entering the main gate, turn left, and you'll see it in no time.Feilai peak, following the forest trail for less than 5 minutes, you'll see the entrance to Qinglin Cave. It's said that the stone slab in front of the cave was once the sleeping bed of Ji Gong, and lying on it is believed to free one from worldly troubles, attracting many travelers to take a rest here. Heading north, the Yuru Cave houses exquisite statues of the Eighteen Arhats from the Northern Song Dynasty, with additional finely crafted statues of the Six Patriarchs of Zen Buddhism on both sides of the cave's eastern entrance. The Longhong cave ahead is commonly known asGuanyin caveInside, there is a rock crevice known as "a thread of sky." Not everyone can see the light passing through the crevice, so you often see people craning their necks to look up. The cliff outside the cave is covered with stone carvings of Buddha statues. At the lower part, you can see the Song Dynasty carving of "the white horse carrying scriptures." The Ligong Pagoda at the entrance of Longhong Cave is the only remaining Ming Dynasty pagoda in Hangzhou. Following the Cold Spring Stream from here, you can also see the big-bellied Maitreya. Opposite the stone carvings stands the famous Lingyin Temple, which is open to the public free of charge but requires real-name reservation in advance, and is still well worth a visit. The statue of Skanda in the heavenly king hall is a relic from the Southern Song dynasty, carved from a single piece of camphor wood, making it extremely precious. The newly renovated Yongfu Temple in Hangzhou is located next to Lingyin Temple. Follow the signs uphill to reach it. Besides the serene ancient architecture, the temple grounds also feature a tea plantation and many ancient trees, offering quite a scenic view. Visitors must return the same way from Yongfu Temple. For those who wish to hike, there is a fork in the path halfway back to Lingyin Temple, leading to Taoguang Temple's exit and onward to Beigao Peak. This route is quiet with few people, making for a pleasant walk. Beigao Peak can be reached by hiking or taking a cable car. At the summit, the Temple of the First Wealth God under Heaven is one of Hangzhou's famous ancient temples.China · Hangzhou

Xidi

7.7
4.6/5
12.2k reviews
Xidi is a typical Huizhou-style ancient village in Yi County, and together with Hongcun it is known as one of the two great ancient villages of southern Anhui. If Hongcun is known for its waterscape, Xidi focuses more on the architecture itself—the village preserves a well-laid-out complex of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, with exquisite craftsmanship in the "three Huizhou-style carvings" of brick, stone, and wood. The patterns and branches are so finely detailed that they are a highlight worth savoring throughout the ancient village. Most residents of the village share the last name Hu. Legend has it that they are descendants of Li Ye, Emperor Zhaozong of Tang, who changed their surname to Hu to escape the chaos of war and have lived here for generations ever since. The ancient village was first built during the Huangyou era of the Northern Song dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, as Huizhou merchants rose to prominence, extensive construction took place, and a large number of Hu merchants returned home to build residences, once giving Xidi hundreds of courtyard houses. The ancient village was laid out in the shape of a boat, spanning three streams. In the south, the Qianbian Stream and Houbian Stream converge at Huiyuan Bridge inside the village to form the Xi Stream, which then joins the Shewu Stream to the north at the village entrance. All the streams flow from east to west, and this is how Xidi, meaning "westward flow," got its name. The main entrance is in the southwest corner, and the first thing that meets the eye is the Hu Wenguang Memorial Archway, built in the sixth year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. It is entirely carved and built from local "Yi County bluestone" marble, with five tiers of stone carvings stacked layer upon layer, grand and imposing. Beside the archway, the broad surface of Mingjing Lake is a good spot for photographing the reflections of Hui-style buildings. Entering the village, Ruiyu Ting at the Henglu Street intersection is a typical Huizhou merchant residence. The couplets in the hall are quite meaningful, such as "Happiness is earned through hard work; good bargains often come from being willing to take a loss," which discusses business principles and also contains a philosophy of life. Heading east along the Front Stream, Jing'ai Hall is one of the larger surviving ancestral halls in the village. The "filial piety" character hanging in the center is ingeniously designed—the right half resembles a person bowing with hands clasped, while the left half resembles a monkey, meaning that only those who observe filial piety are truly human, and those who are unfilial are like macaques. Shangde Hall upstream is one of the oldest surviving Ming Dynasty buildings in the village. In addition, Taoli Yuan, which pairs a residence with a study hall; the Hui-style courtyards West Garden and East Garden; Dunren Hall, the late-life residence of the Qing Dynasty Huizhou merchant Hu Guansan; as well as Zouma Lou, Xiulou, and Zhuimu Hall, each have their own features and are worth visiting one by one. Art academy students often come here to sketch, and the young people setting up easels among the white walls and black tiles have also become a scene of the ancient village.Yi County · 59.8 km from Shitai

Lingyin Temple, also known as "Yunlin Temple," is located at the foot of Lingyin Mountain on the west side of West Lake. With its serene environment, it is the oldest renowned temple in Hangzhou, preserving numerous exquisite cultural relics from various dynasties. This is the place where Jigong became a monk, and it is said that prayers made here are very efficacious, attracting a continuous stream of worshippers every day. Seventeen hundred years of trials have made Lingyin Temple a treasure trove of history and culture: the plaque inscribed "Yunlin Chan Temple" hanging in the heavenly king hall was written by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty; the stone pagoda in front of the main hall and the stone sutra pillar in front of the heavenly king hall are relics from the Wuyue period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms; the temple houses precious Buddhist artifacts such as ancient palm-leaf scriptures, a gilded statue from the Eastern Wei dynasty, a handwritten copy of the "Diamond Sutra" by Dong Qichang of the Ming dynasty, and the wooden dragon sutra from the Yongzheng era of the Qing dynasty. Lingyin Temple is also where the monk "Jigong" (Daoji) was ordained. In the Daoji Chan Master Hall of Lingyin Temple, a statue of Jigong is enshrined, holding a broken fan in his right hand, prayer beads in his left, and resting his right foot on a wine jar. Lingyin Temple is nestled against the Northern Peak and faces Feilai Peak. Though Feilai Peak is not tall, it features numerous fantastically shaped caves and over 340 Buddhist rock carvings dating back to the Five Dynasties period, making it a rare gem of ancient grotto art in southern China. The temple enjoys year-round bustling incense offerings, especially on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month or major Buddhist festivals, when devotees flock from all directions, creating massive crowds.China · Hangzhou

Tengwang Pavilion Tourist Area

8.7
4.5/5
30k reviews
Tengwang Pavilion Tourist Area is located on the east bank of the Gan River in Nanchang, with the riverside Tengwang Pavilion as its centerpiece. Originally built in the fourth year of the Yonghui era of the Tang Dynasty by Li Yuanying, Prince of Teng and son of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, it gained eternal fame through Wang Bo's "Preface to Tengwang Pavilion." Alongside the Yellow Crane Tower and Yueyang Tower, it is hailed as one of the "Three Great Towers of Jiangnan." Historically destroyed and rebuilt nearly thirty times, the current structure is a Song-style replica completed in 1989, designed based on Liang Sicheng's reconstruction sketches. With its green tiles and layered eaves, it remains a landmark of Nanchang to this day. The main pavilion follows a "three visible, seven concealed" layout: appearing as a three-story structure with encircling corridors from the outside, while actually containing seven interior floors—nine levels including the two-tiered base symbolizing ancient city walls. Turquoise-roofed galleries extend north and south from the base's flanks, connecting at their ends to auxiliary pavilions named "River-taming" and "Greenery-embracing," forming a mountain-shaped silhouette with the main tower. Below, an artificial lake and the nine-bend wind-and-rain bridge add classical garden charm to the majestic architecture. Each floor of the pavilion offers something remarkable. The white marble relief "A timely wind delivers Tengwang Pavilion" in the first-floor preface hall depicts the legend of Wang Bo riding the wind to compose his famous preface. The second-floor mezzanine features the long scroll painting "Gallery of eminent figures," gathering Jiangxi's historical luminaries like Tao Yuanming, Ouyang Xiu, Wang Anshi, and Tang Xianzu in one artwork. The third-floor mural "Linchuan dream" recreates Tang Xianzu's staging of "The peony pavilion" here. The fourth-floor "Land of wonders" painting compresses Jiangxi's iconic landscapes—Mount Lu, Sanqing Mountain, Dragon-Tiger Mountain, and Poyang Lake—into a single masterpiece. The fifth floor is the highlight for panoramic views: its central hall displays a bronze tablet inscribed with Su Dongpo's calligraphic version of "Preface to Tengwang Pavilion," while the east hall exhibits a scale model of the pavilion. Strolling the veranda offers sweeping views of the Gan River and modern skyline across the water. The top floor bears the plaque "Ninth heaven," with its west hall housing an antique-style theater flanked by replica ancient instruments like chime bells and stone chimes. Above, spiral-arranged bracket sets adorn the caisson ceiling, and between the double eaves hangs Su Dongpo's gilded "Tengwang Pavilion" plaque. After descending from the main pavilion, take time to explore the garden area: the square in front of the pavilion, the grand Song-style archway, the antique street lined with calligraphy and antique shops, and the small Suzhou-style garden Fuchang Garden with its lake reflections and bridge views—perfect for slowing your pace. To experience the poetic scene of "a solitary wild duck flying with the sunset glow, while the autumn water blends with the vast sky," an evening ascent to the pavilion is ideal. The fifth-floor corridor offers an expansive view, making it a prime spot to admire the sunset over the Gan River.China · Nanchang

My second visit to West Lake was great; the boat tour was excellent. The dock was easy to find, the staff were very friendly, provided clear explanations, and helped with any issues. There were also sightseeing buses, which were nice but a bit pricey. Taking the boat tour and then walking around was both perfectly fine.

The temperature inside the cave is 15℃, which is too cool in midsummer. The first section is about 60 meters, and you can take a boat. The rest is walking along the underground river. It takes about an hour and a half to play in total! It is very beautiful inside and worth seeing!

Five stars! The night view of Wangxian Valley truly lives up to its reputation; the cliffside pavilions are dazzlingly lit, resembling a fairyland. I recommend entering in the afternoon. Enjoy the canyon and streams during the day, and then experience the daytime and nighttime views at dusk when the lights come on – perfect for taking stunning photos. The park has excellent facilities, and online ticketing and ID card entry are very convenient. Definitely worth a special trip!

Before coming, I did a lot of research, and everyone said that you'd regret not going, and you'd regret going anyway. After much deliberation, I still came. My mother really liked it; she thought it was beautiful even though it's a man-made scenic area and took many photos. The area was very lively; even in the afternoon, there were still many people, and there were queues at the photo spots. I joined in the fun so I could take some pictures for my mom. Overall, the experience was just average because there were too many unfavorable factors: it was a cloudy day with no sun, the lighting was dim at night, and the ground was slippery in the afternoon… and it's essentially still a commercialized ancient town (village) with local characteristics. Luckily, my mother liked it, so it wasn't a wasted trip. However, the view of the terraced fields from the viewing platform was excellent; I felt like I'd seen such a view in my dreams. Finally, I want to praise the friendly and enthusiastic service from the shopkeepers within the scenic area. Overall, it was an expensive but worthwhile trip.

At the summit, there's just a rock and a flat area, nothing special. On the other side, there's a temple to the God of Wealth with 1399 steps. You need to be very sincere to reach the top. Below are various Buddhist halls and temples, as well as some stone carvings of Buddha statues. The scenery is pleasant, with mountains, water, and forests.

Xidi is nice; it's not overly commercialized, and you can see the villagers' lives. It's rustic and steeped in history. The village is well-preserved, perfect for a leisurely experience. However, wandering around on the off-main roads after dark can be a little scary. There are folk performances in the square at night, which are very lively, and at 11 pm, they even play gongs and drums to signal the night watch. Hongcun is heavily commercialized, with assembly-line-like shops selling cultural and creative products, Hanfu (traditional Han clothing), silver jewelry, and even grilled sausages—it's pretty much the same everywhere in China. But the morning and night views of Moon Pond and South Lake are worth seeing.

When it's not crowded, you can go upstairs to see the river view; it's a different experience, although the stairwells are indeed narrow. I didn't go inside the scenic area for the night view, but the photos I took outside were also very beautiful; the night view is truly stunning.
