Yankou Ancient Town

4.1
4.3/5
148 reviews
Yankou Ancient Town is located in Wusheng County, known as Fengshan Town in ancient times. Yankou Ancient Town is the second largest settlement of Hui people in the Jialing River Basin, with Islamic characteristics. The entire ancient town is built on the mountain, with a total length of about 4 kilometers and an area of about 0.5 square kilometers. In ancient times, due to the convenient waterway transportation, merchants gathered here, and more than 100 merchant ships were gathered here. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Wusheng moved the county seat here, and the ancient town became the political, economic and cultural center of the county, and it was even more prosperous. Due to the low terrain of the ancient town, it has been invaded by Jialing River floods many times. Since the 1980s, the county seat in the valley has been relocated and developed, and the buildings of the ancient town have been well preserved. The streets of the ancient town are based on terrain, with high and low connections, and twists and turns. The streets are narrow and deep, with slate paving and several meters wide. The houses are wooden structures, with many styles of two-entry or quadrangle courtyards. Thousands of traditional dwellings are scattered at different heights, and the buildings such as mosques, old theaters, winemaking workshops, and Muslim cattle slaughterhouses are antique and large-scale. The Majia Mosque, which was built in the 43rd year of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, was continued in the 8th year of Daoguang. It is a wooden structure with a large scale and a courtyard layout. It consists of a mountain gate, a chapel, left and right wing rooms, and inner and outer patios, with Islamic characteristics. The surviving Huangjia Mosque and Yuwang Palace are also Qing Dynasty buildings. Yongshou Temple, a thousand-year-old temple, has a bridge directly connected to it. Dingyuan Ancient Pagoda stands majestically, and you can see the beautiful scenery of Jialing River and the style of the ancient town in front of you. The statues of the Thousand Buddhas Rock in the Song Dynasty are full of fun and interesting. The tombs of the Han Dynasty unearthed under the Thousand Buddha Rocks add to the mystery of the ancient town.Wusheng · 910m from downtown

Located in Guang'an City's Wusheng County, Baozhen Fortress is a fully fortified Eastern Sichuan residential complex built by the local Duan noble family in a way which integrated the functionalities of military defense and daily living. The special nature of the fortress can be seen not only in its advantageous location but also its integrated towers, defensive walls, and structures reminiscent of southern Fujianese tulou. The result is a fully enclosed defensive living quarter. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities such as strawberry picking, fishing and paintball.Wusheng · 21.6 km from downtown

The Dikeng Waterfall Scenic Area is located in Yuechi County, Guang'an City, Sichuan Province. It was formed by the collapse of the bedrock on the bank of the Jialing River. It is about 200 meters wide and 70 meters high, wider than the Huangguoshu Waterfall, but lower in height. Despite this, its momentum and magnificence are not inferior to other famous waterfalls. When you come to the waterfall, you will be impressed by its magnificent scenery. The Yuechi Dikeng Waterfall Ecological Tourism Scenic Area takes natural scenery as its theme and follows the spatial layout of "one center and six functional areas" (i.e., tourist comprehensive service center, waterfall sightseeing area, flower viewing area, leisure and entertainment area, garden sightseeing and leisure resort area, wetland conservation area, jungle entertainment area) to create a rural leisure tourism destination that integrates waterfall and flower sightseeing, ecological leisure, sports and health, vacation and entertainment, and other elements.Yuechi · 16.7 km from Wusheng

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is located along the main branch of the Lancang River, west of Dujiangyan City. It was constructed in the Qin dynasty around 256 BC by Li Bing, Prefecture Chief of Shu County, and his son. It is one of the few ancient Chinese water conservancy projects that has remained preserved and intact. The project consists of three primary works—Yuzui Diverting Embankment, the Feishayan Spillway, and the Baopingkou Water Inlet, and two secondary works which include the Baizhangdi (the thousand-feet dam) and Renzidi (the y-shaped dam). They divide the Yongjiang River into an outer and an inner branch, the former of which is used to divert floods and the latter for irrigation. This has allowed the Western Sichuan plateau to become "the land of abundance" as we now know it.China · Dujiangyan

Mount Qingcheng

8.9
4.6/5
33.6k reviews
Mount Qingcheng has long been praised as "Tranquil Paradise under Heaven," with its peaks encircling like city walls—hence the name. Legend says Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty established Taoism here in a thatched hut, making it the ancestral home of Celestial Master Taoism, where temple incense still burns today. The mountain divides into front and back sections: the front features Taoist temples and cultural relics, commonly referred to as "Mount Qingcheng" by most travelers; the back excels in natural landscapes like pools, waterfalls, streams, and gorges, making it ideal for hiking and summer retreats. The highlights of Qianshan are concentrated. Starting from Jianfu Palace beside the mountain gate, follow the ancient stone steps upward past Natural Picture, Tianshi Cave, Chaoyang Cave, and Shangqing Palace, with the summit's Laojun Pavilion as the final vantage point. Tianshi Cave, also called Changdao Temple, is one of the mountain's largest Taoist complexes—its front courtyard holds a millennium-old ginkgo tree allegedly planted by Zhang Daoling, while the cliffside Ink-throwing Trough behind is said to be where the celestial master drew mountains with vermilion ink. Painting master Zhang Daqian once resided at Shangqing Palace, styling himself "Guest of Qingcheng." At the mountain's base, Yuecheng Lake's mirror-like waters add ethereal beauty to the lush greenery. The rear mountain entrance is the quaint Tai'an ancient town. From here, the trails connect Wulong gully and Feiquan gully into a loop, with views like Misty spring triple pools, Double spring water curtain cave, and Hundred-zhang long bridge accompanied by the sounds of water and shaded woods. The Longyin gorge walkway built along cliffs overlooks rushing streams below, making it a dedicated hiking route. The mountain stays pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The front mountain and back mountain entrances are not connected, usually requiring separate itineraries. Most 1-day tours choose one of the two. The front mountain's main temples can be visited in half a day, while the back mountain loop is longer and requires reserving most of a day. Travelers wishing to see the sunrise often ascend the mountain a day early, staying overnight at mountain temples for convenient morning viewing.China · Dujiangyan

Hongyadong commercial street is located on Cangbai Road of Yuzhong District, Chongqing City. It is at the intersection where the Yangtze River and the Jialing River meet. Most of its buildings are “Diaojialou” style, which reflects traditional architectural features of Bayu. It is a great place to go if you want to check out the old streets of Chongqing, appreciate the two rivers, or try local cuisines. At the same time, it is home to a bustling night scene, making it a fascinating attraction for photographers.Chongqing · 91.6 km from Wusheng

Mount Emei is one of the four famous mountains of Chinese Buddhism, and it is also the temple of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. There are numerous Buddhist monasteries in the mountains that combine to give this place a holy and serene atmosphere. The scenery in the mountains are beautiful. The four seasons each have their own characteristics. If you are lucky, you can see the sunrise and sea of clouds. Do note that the monkeys in Mount Emei are notoriously naughty. They are not afraid of people, and even take the initiative to ask tourists for food.China · Emeishan City

Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum

The Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum is a temple dedicated to honoring Shu Han heroes such as Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang. Its origins date back to 221 AD during the first year of the Zhangwu era under Emperor Zhaolie of Shu Han, when Liu Bei's Hui Ling Mausoleum was constructed. The Han Zhaolie Temple was also built during the same period. Approx. around 500 AD during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, the Wuhou Shrine was relocated from Chengdu's "Shaocheng" to the vicinity of Hui Ling Mausoleum and Han Zhaolie Temple, maintaining this layout until the Ming Dynasty. In 1390 during the 23rd year of the Hongwu era, Zhu Chun, the Ming Prince of Shu, visited the Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum for worship. Citing that "monarch and subject should be united as one," he merged Hui Ling Mausoleum, Han Zhaolie Temple, and Wuhou Shrine into a single complex. As Zhuge Liang's influence among the common people surpassed that of Liu Bei, the site became colloquially known as "Wuhou Shrine." The cultural relics area of the Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum mainly consists of the Hui Ling Mausoleum, Han Zhaolie Temple, Wuhou Shrine, and the Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum - Sanyi Temple, with the main structure being the Wuhou Shrine. The shrine is divided into the main gate, second gate, Liu Bei Hall, passage hall, Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum - Zhuge Liang Hall, and Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum - Sanyi Temple, all aligned along a central axis from south to north. The shrine houses 50 statues of Shu Han heroes including Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, along with numerous stone inscriptions and plaques related to Zhuge Liang and Three Kingdoms culture. The famous "red wall and bamboo shadows" of Chengdu are located within the attraction. Don't forget to take photos. The garden area of Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum, located on the west side of the shrine, features architectural structures such as the stone archway gate, three-arched gate, square pavilion, Jiexin Hall, and burial chamber. It is the only northern-style mausoleum complex in southwest China. The shrine is adjacent to Jinli Ancient Street (Jinli Folk Custom Area), making it convenient to visit both sites together.China · Chengdu

It's worth taking kids to see it. Besides the waterfall, there are many facilities for children to play on, but the facilities are not very well maintained, and some rides are no longer available, probably because there are too few people and they've been abandoned. When we went to the waterfall, the water had a slightly fishy smell, probably due to too much algae. There's also a wire-suspended flying ride, but we didn't dare to go on it.

Dujiangyan, a monumental water conservancy project that has influenced millennia, is situated on the Minjiang River in the western Chengdu Plain of Sichuan Province. Standing silently for over two thousand years, its influence extends to the present day, spanning dozens of generations and profoundly changing the destiny of this land. In ancient times, the Minjiang River was prone to flooding, and the people along its banks suffered from its devastation year after year. Li Bing, the governor of Shu during the Qin Dynasty, led the people to carve through mountains and build dikes to divert water, constructing this complete, dam-free water diversion system. Instead of brute force to alter nature, it guided and regulated the water flow according to the terrain, transforming the raging river into fertile water that nourished thousands of miles of land. This freed the Chengdu Plain from famine, turning it into a land of abundance, free from drought and flood. Even after thousands of years of weathering, it continues to play its irrigation role, a true miracle that has benefited future generations and influenced the course of Chinese civilization.

The Two Rivers Ferry is absolutely fantastic! The 15 yuan ticket is incredibly cost-effective! Here's a great route for families with kids: After visiting Jiefangbei and Kuixinglou, see Hongyadong during the day. If you're traveling with a 6-year-old and don't want to brave the crowds at Hongyadong at night, the stilted buildings during the day are just as beautiful. Afterward, take the Two Rivers Ferry to Danzishi, disembark, and explore Danzishi Old Street, Nanbin Road, and Xiahaoli. Then, take the light rail/bus or taxi back. The whole route is smooth and relaxing. The boat ride is novel and fun, and the kids especially loved it, remaining enthusiastic about exploring the shopping streets afterwards. At the pier, there's a large bowl of freshly cut watermelon for 10 yuan – watch it being cut right in front of you! It's sweet and refreshing. I highly recommend this route for families!

Xiaoxiao, the guide at the Sanxingdui Museum, was extremely professional. Her explanations were ample in time and in-depth, covering not only the exhibits but also a great deal of archaeological knowledge, with excellent interactive elements. She brought the ancient Shu civilization to life in a vivid and easy-to-understand way. I learned a lot throughout the visit and highly recommend her. Her explanations of the Sanxingdui artifacts, casting techniques, and ancient Shu beliefs were clear, engaging, and the experience was excellent. I was very satisfied!

It's worth a visit, but I recommend booking a guided tour in advance for a better understanding of the history. Trying to see it on your own, especially if it's your first time, might be confusing. The scenery inside is nice, the area is quite large, and there are many places to stroll and take photos. The exit leads to an old street with lots of snacks at reasonable prices.
