Mu Fu Mansion

7.8

Lijiang · 5.3 km from Yulong

11.4k reviews

Mu Fu Mansion is located at the foot of Lion Mountain in the ancient town of Lijiang. It served as the residence of the Mu family chieftains for centuries since the Ming Dynasty. The architecture retains the central plains style of the Ming era while incorporating Bai and Naxi craftsmanship. When Xu Xiake visited Lijiang, he could only admire the grand complex from outside the gates, leaving behind the praise "The splendor of these palaces rivals that of imperial courts." These eight characters are now gilded on the entrance screen wall. Locals often say "As there is the Forbidden City in the north, so there is Mu Fu Mansion in the south," regarding it as Lijiang's version of the Forbidden City. Visiting Mu Fu Mansion, you first pass through the wooden archway inscribed with "Tian Yu Liu Fang" – these four characters are a homophone for "Go study" in the Naxi language, reflecting the Mu chieftain family's tradition of valuing education – then through the exquisitely carved stone archway bearing the words "Loyalty and righteousness." In the past, locals praised it with the saying, "The Three Pagodas of Dali, the stone archways of Lijiang." Stepping through the vermilion gate, the central axis runs east to west, lined with the assembly hall, Wanjuan Tower (Ten-Thousand-Volume Library), guardian hall, Guangbi Tower, Yuyin Tower, and Sanqing Hall. The assembly hall was where the chieftain conducted political affairs, dignified and imposing. Wanjuan Tower once housed thousands of Dongba scriptures, hundreds of Buddhist sutras, poetry collections of six chieftains, and numerous calligraphy and paintings by renowned scholars, embodying the mansion's cultural heritage. The guardian hall, also called the rear assembly hall, was used for family discussions. Guangbi Tower, the gatehouse of the rear garden, has long been hailed as "the finest in western Yunnan." Yuyin Tower was where imperial edicts were received and banquets with music and dance were held. At the axis's end stands Sanqing Hall, situated high at the foot of Lion Mountain, offering a panoramic view of the entire mansion and the layered rooftops of the ancient town. Over a hundred auxiliary halls, pavilions, street-crossing buildings, and family courtyards flank the axis in staggered elevations, recreating the grandeur of the chieftain's residence. Most structures of Mu Fu Mansion were destroyed in wars during the late Qing Dynasty. Its current layout was reconstructed after fundraising following the 1996 Lijiang earthquake and completed in 1999. TV series like "Mu Fu Feng Yun" and "Qian Wang" were filmed here. After the tour, the Zhongyi Memorial Archway outside the mansion, the "Tian Yu Liu Fang" archway, and the screen wall inscribed with Xu Xiake's praise are all photo-worthy spots.

Old Town of Lijiang

7.7

Lijiang · 5.5 km from Yulong

15.2k reviews

The Old Town of Lijiang, also known as Dayan Town, is one of the famous towns along the ancient Tea Horse Road. TV dramas like "One Meter of Sunshine" and "Mu Fu Feng Yun" were filmed here. The town features wooden houses with dark-tiled roofs, ancient stone-paved streets, and small bridges over flowing streams winding past homes. Standing on East Street, one can see the snow-capped peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on clear days, with the iconic view of the mountain and the old town framed together. The ancient town is built along the mountain slopes, with streets and alleys following the waterways. Sifang Street, once a trading market on the ancient Tea Horse Road, remains the town's center today, with four main streets—Guangyi Street, Qiyi Street, Wuyi Street, and Xinhua Street—radiating outward and branching into a crisscrossing network of lanes. The Yu River splits into three at Yulong Bridge in the north, forming the East, Middle, and West Rivers, which further divide into nine tributaries and countless water alleys, creating a layout where main streets border rivers and small lanes adjoin canals. Mu Fu, the residence of the Mu chieftain praised by Xu Xiake as "palatial splendor rivaling that of kings," stands at the foot of Lion Mountain beside Guangyi Street. For a panoramic view of the town, climb to Wangulou on Lion Mountain, where layers of dark-tiled rooftops unfold below. The melodies of ancient Naxi music can be heard year-round in the town, while shops displaying Dongba script and handmade silver and copper crafts are scattered throughout the streets, offering glimpses of Naxi craftsmanship at every turn. The large waterwheel at the entrance of the ancient town is an iconic photo spot. The town is filled with shops selling ethnic accessories, tea, silverware, and shawls. Local delicacies like cured pork ribs and chickpea jelly can be found in restaurants, alongside Western options like pizza. Tired visitors can take a break anywhere.

The Yulong Snow Mountain Cableway is one of the three cableways in the Yulong Snow Mountain Scenic Area and it is also a popular one. Visitors can take the cableway from the cableway station at Ganhaizi, which leads directly to the Glacier Park at an altitude of 4,506 meters. After getting off the cableway, you can walk on the wooden plank road laid along the glacier to the highest point of 4,680 meters above sea level, and feel the charm of snow-capped mountains and glaciers from a close distance.

Lashihai Wetland Park

7.1

Yulong · 11.6 km from downtown

5.6k reviews

Lashihai Wetland Park is a highland wetland lake in the Lashi Dam west of Lijiang. The lake surface is as calm as a mirror, reflecting the distant Yulong Snow Mountain on clear days. Reeds sway along the lakeshore, and open grassy beaches are scattered with traditional Naxi villages. Located on the western migration route for migratory birds, tens of thousands of birds arrive here each fall and winter to overwinter. Waterfowl such as gray cranes and bar-headed geese forage and rest between the lake and grassy beaches, making it a famous birdwatching spot near Lijiang. Horseback riding along the ancient tea-horse road is the signature activity at Lashihai Wetland Park. Several Naxi villages by the lake have horse ranches, where grooms lead horses to take you through forests and over slopes along the old post road, or stroll leisurely around the lakeside meadows while listening to their stories of the tea-caravan trade to Tibet in the past. You can also take a boat onto the lake to observe waterfowl up close and admire the snow-capped mountains reflected in the water. For dedicated birdwatching, flocks are particularly active during winter mornings and evenings. It's recommended to bring binoculars, wear dark-colored clothing, remain quiet, and avoid feeding or chasing the birds. Please note that the lakeside horse ranches and cruises are scattered across various villages, with different operating methods and route lengths. Before departure, confirm the route details and safety arrangements with the ranch, choose a properly operated ranch, and ride within your ability.

During the cableway ride, visitors can overlook the magnificent natural landscape, the towering snow-capped mountains, the lush forests and the deep canyons, as if they were in a dynamic landscape painting. The design and construction of the cableway fully consider the special environment of high-altitude areas to ensure the safety and comfort of the ride. Blue Moon Valley lies at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain near Lijiang. It was carved out by Baishui River, fed by meltwater from Yulong Snow Mountain. The water of the lake is so clear, you can see the lake bed and is a stunning shade of blue. On the floor of Blue Moon Valley lie four lakes, each with its own distinct color: Jade Wine Lake, Mirror Pond, Blue Moon Lake, and Wave-Listening Lake. The valley is also dotted with many picturesque little waterfalls that make beautiful photographs.

Sifang Street

6.5

4.5/5

1.7k reviews

The Sifang Street Square is located at the center of Lijiang Old Town. This rectangular square was the start of the Tea Horse Road and the business hub of northwestern Yunnan during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This was the once hustling and bustling center of downtown Lijiang. Nearby there are many shops, restaurants, pub streets and places to visit. It's one of the old city's most famous landmarks. During the day, visitors stroll leisurely and locals gather to meet with friends. At night, this place comes alive with impromptu performances by local folk singers.

Baisha Ancient Town

6.5

4.6/5

485 reviews

Baisha Ancient Town is an ancient town about 12 kilometers north of Lijiang City. It was the original settlement of the Naxi people in Lijiangba and the birthplace of Lijiang Mu's Toast. At present, it still retains the antique style, and it is very quiet and simple. The "white sand murals" in the town of Ming and Qing Dynasties are even more precious. Some people say that Baisha is Lijiang ten years ago. There is only an old commercial street here, and there are many local Naxi courtyards, which retain the original appearance of the ancient town, and you can see the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain when you look up. The small shops selling souvenirs mainly sell two kinds of things, one is tie-dye, the other is all kinds of imitation antiques, and there are some cafes and snack bars. Compared with the bustling business of Dayan and Shuhe, Baisha Ancient Town is a relatively quiet place. The strange thing is that although the streets here are relatively old, there are almost foreign English signs on the doors and windows of the streets, and some shops can also do business with foreign tourists in English. This is because most of the people who came to Baisha in the past were foreigners, who preferred the primitive Naxi folk customs here, and the locals also learned foreign languages. There is a very famous attraction in the ancient town "Baisha Murals". The painting of "Baisha Murals" lasted for more than 300 years from the early Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. When you come to Baisha Ancient Town, you might as well come here to learn about Dongba culture. In addition to this scenic spot, most of the people who come to Baisha Ancient Town are for the sake of the cleanliness here. Chatting in languages you know or don't understand makes people feel relaxed and leisurely.
