Fuxian Lake

7.1
4.6/5
166 reviews
Fuxian Lake is located between Chengjiang, Jiangchuan District, and Huaning County in Yuxi, Yunnan. As most of the lake lies within Chengjiang, locals also call it "Chengjiang Sea." Accessible by a roughly one-hour drive from Kunming, it is a popular lakeside getaway in central Yunnan. Covering over 200 square km, it ranks as Yunnan's third-largest lake by area after Dianchi and Erhai, but its fame stems from its depth and water volume: with depths exceeding 150 m and a storage capacity of approx. 20 billion cubic meters, it dwarfs Dianchi and Erhai combined. The lake's crystal-clear azure waters boast transparency of up to 7–8 m, inspiring ancient descriptions like "10,000 acres of glazed glass." Highlights cluster along the western and northern shores. On the west, the Luchong scenic area nestles between mountains and the lake. A short climb up Bijia Hill rewards visitors with panoramic views, while ancient banyan trees shade its base. Here, traditional waterwheel fishing persists—locals channel lake water into ditches to catch the endemic kanglang fish. Further south, Mingxing Fish Cave's shallow, clear waters make it a hotspot for sailing boats and kayaking. The northern and eastern shores offer more photogenic scenes: coconut-fringed beaches at Moon Bay Wetland Park, red sand beaches on the Chengjiang side, the cherry blossom-lined Time Trail at Yinghua Valley, and flower fields at Fuhai Bay Wetland Park are all popular photo spots. At the lake's southwestern tip, Yudai River connects to neighboring Xingyun Lake, where the Jieyu Stone creates the curious phenomenon of "two lakes meeting, fish never crossing"—fish from each lake turn back at the stone. Divers have discovered mysterious stone structures on the lakebed, adding to its allure. The nearly 100-km ring road around the lake is ideal for self-drive or cycling tours, with mountain and lake views at every turn. Frequent stops for photos are encouraged, though holiday traffic can be heavy, so allow ample time. Lakeside restaurants serve must-try dishes like copper-pot fish and potato rice, with the tender, small-boned kanglang fish being a local delicacy. In winter, red-billed gulls overwinter here, and the soft morning and evening light creates perfect conditions for sunrise and sunset photography. For natural history enthusiasts, the nearby Maotianshan area on the north shore has yielded abundant Cambrian fossils dating back over 500 million years, worth a detour.Chengjiang · 17.6 km from downtown

Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural Museum

The Chengjiang Fossil Land Natural Museum is a natural science museum themed around the Cambrian Explosion. Built upon the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Chengjiang Fossil Site," it combines geological relics with scientific research to present visitors with brilliant chapters from Earth's evolutionary history. The Chengjiang Fossil Land Natural Museum showcases the 530-million-year-old Chengjiang biota fossils as its centerpiece. The museum features multiple themed exhibition halls that progressively explore geological formations, fossil specimens, and the evolution of life. Visitors can observe well-preserved ancient fossils like trilobites and Anomalocaris up close, enhanced by dynamic projections and scene reconstructions that bring these ancient marine creatures to life. A specially designed interactive "Tree of Life" installation visually demonstrates species differentiation, making it perfect for families to explore together. Beyond static exhibits, the museum has designed immersive experiences: visitors can transform into "paleontologists" and enjoy simulated fossil excavation with professional tools in the dig zone, or observe intricate details of microfossils through microscopes to experience the rigor and fun of scientific research. The museum building itself also features clever design—its facade draws inspiration from rock strata textures, creating harmony with the surrounding karst landscape. Leaving the exhibition hall, visitors can follow the trail to the fossil site preservation area to discover traces of time in authentic geological formations. The museum is located near Fuxian Lake, where a post-visit lakeside stroll blends the story of ancient life with the breathtaking scenery of blue waters and skies, adding a harmonious blend of nature and culture to your journey. This place is not just a treasure trove of knowledge for science enthusiasts, but also a key for all visitors to unlock the mysteries of Earth's life.Chengjiang · 7.9 km from downtown

Shimen Gorge Scenic Area

4.6/5
23 reviews
Shimen Gorge Scenic Area is hidden deep in the dense forests on the eastern foothills of the Ailao Mountains, at an altitude of over 2,000m. It is a canyon landscape in the Ailao Mountains area. The two sides of the canyon form five passes that resemble gates, which is how the scenic area got its name. The stream in the gorge is blue and clear, with cascading waterfalls, deep pools, and a canopy of trees reflecting each other. Many visitors call it the Little Jiuzhaigou of the Ailao Mountains. To explore, follow the ecological boardwalk in the gorge upstream, passing by spots such as Jinsha Lake, Mingyue Pool, Liuxing Spring, and Pearl Waterfall in sequence: the water of Liuxing Spring drips from rock crevices; the water of Pearl Waterfall scatters into fine droplets, and you can often see rainbows when backlit; the stream gathers into deep pools at lower elevations, where you can occasionally see Huayao Dai girls in traditional costumes punting bamboo rafts on the blue waves. The trail extends closely along the stream, passing through stone caves, crossing small bridges, and climbing cliffs, sometimes through deep, secluded forests, and sometimes opening up to wide views. High up in the canyon, towering trees reach for the sky with vines winding around them; lower down, algae, ferns, and mosses cover the stone walls in layers. The scenic area is located in the sameAilao Mountainsarea as the Ancient Tea Horse Road and Jinshan Primitive Forest, making it suitable to arrange them together in your itinerary.Xinping · 48.3 km from downtown

Ailao Mountain Nature Reserveis located in the central and northern sections of the Ailao Mountains, spanning Xinping, Chuxiong, Shuangbai, Jingdong, Zhenyuan, and Nanhua across the three cities (prefectures) of Yuxi, Chuxiong, and Pu'er. It serves as the natural boundary between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains, with its main peak, Damo Yan Peak, reaching an altitude of 3,166m. The reserve preserves vast areas of primitive subtropical mid-mountain moist evergreen broad-leaved forests. The forest is shrouded in clouds and mist year-round, earning it the reputation as the "biological gene bank" of central Yunnan. The reserve's primary conservation targets are the subtropical mid-mountain moist evergreen broad-leaved forest ecosystem and rare animals such as the western black-crested gibbon, green peafowl, and gray langur. It is home to thousands of species of higher plants and hundreds of species of vertebrates, serving as an important global habitat for the western black-crested gibbon. The Xinping jurisdiction of Ailao Mountain currently hosts 178 groups of western black-crested gibbons, making it one of the core habitats with the largest and most concentrated populations of this species in the world. Every fall and winter, flocks of migratory birds fly over the mountain ridges at night, creating a spectacular scene of mass migration in the areas of Daque Mountain andJinshan Primitive Forest. Most of the developed and open scenic spots are concentrated on the Xinping side of Ailao Mountain: Nan'en Waterfall, which means "silvery white flowing water" in the Dai language, cascades down from cliffs with a multi-level drop of over 100m; the bluestone road of the Qianjiazhai Ancient Tea Horse Road still bears the hoof prints of old horse caravans, and relics of Ming and Qing dynasty iron smelting furnaces can be found along the way; Jinshan Primitive Forest features towering ancient trees and intertwining vines. A cultural highlight is the Longxi Shizu Manor located in the mountainside; this hereditary chieftain's residence from the Qing Dynasty features solid construction and an imposing design, making it well worth a visit.Xinping · 49.3 km from downtown

During the National Day holiday, we arrived early at the Mingxing Fish Cave Scenic Area of Fuxian Lake. The weather was overcast today, lacking bright sunshine, so the overall scenery was slightly less impressive than on a sunny day. However, this didn't dampen our spirits at all; instead, it added a gentle and tranquil atmosphere. What surprised me most was the unique interplay of light and shadow on the lake: the nearby waters were shrouded in a hazy, serene atmosphere, while in the distance, the lake shone brightly with the light of a clear day. The dappled sunlight gently sprinkled across the surface, creating a play of light and shadow, layer upon layer of brilliance, and the water shimmered with a delicate luster—it was exceptionally beautiful and soothing. The scenic area isn't very large, and there aren't many crowded attractions, making the overall atmosphere very relaxing and pleasant. The ground is covered with fine artificial sand, perfect for children to play in. It's especially suitable for family trips; just bring sand toys, and your kids can play freely on the sand, letting loose and enjoying a relaxing time. The highlight of the scenic area is the several popular lakeside cafes, especially the second-floor window seats, which offer fantastic views. Sitting quietly by the window, you can look up and gaze at the entire Fuxian Lake. The water is clear and gentle, and a soft lake breeze blows, making it perfect for daydreaming, relaxing, and slowly enjoying the lakeside lifestyle. However, during holidays, it gets very crowded, so if you want a good spot and good photos, you'll need to queue early. Also, taking photos within the scenic area requires payment, which is a small detail to keep in mind. Besides coffee and leisurely sightseeing, the scenic area also offers sailing water sports. However, apart from that, the overall activities are relatively limited and not particularly diverse. If you're looking for a high-intensity experience with a variety of entertainment options, this place might feel rather ordinary. But if you're looking for peace and relaxation, spending a few hours here quietly, watching the lake, feeling the breeze, and enjoying the slow pace of life will be very comfortable. Here are some practical tips: The restrooms are located outside the ticket gates. If you need to go to the restroom, be sure to scan the QR code and register your face beforehand to avoid having to buy a second ticket – very convenient and hassle-free. Overall, Mingxing Fish Cave is not a noisy and bustling amusement park, but rather a tranquil lakeside retreat perfect for relaxation, family fun, taking photos, and simply daydreaming. It's even more stunning on a sunny day, and has its own serene and gentle beauty even on a cloudy one, making it a relaxing and comfortable holiday getaway that soothes the mind and body.

Moon Bay at Fuxian Lake, known as the "Little Sanya of Yunnan," is essentially the hotel's backyard. It's quiet and peaceful, with few people, so you don't have to rush. You can quietly watch the lake, feel the breeze, and while away the time – just the right amount of comfort! [winking emoji]

The first stop in southeastern Yunnan was to visit the Fuxian Lake Luchong Scenic Area. We left in such a hurry that we only visited Luchong in Fuxian Lake. The mountain is not too high and is suitable for the elderly and children. The scenery is beautiful on a sunny day!

Fuxian Lake is very large, with a circumference of more than 70 kilometers. It is recommended to go to the Red Beach to see seagulls. The water quality of Luchong Scenic Area is crystal clear, and there are several good places to take pictures. Moon Bay is too small and the scenery is average.

This is a scenic spot in the northwest corner of Fuxian Lake, and also one of the must-visit spots for taking photos. The shore is covered with red sand, which I heard was transported there. There are many seagulls, making it not only a great place for taking pictures but also a good place to bring children to play. When the weather is bad, the scenery is not particularly special, and in winter, it can be very windy, so be sure to dress warmly.

Wow, amazing hike into the gorge. It was around 2.6 km to the end and it took about an hour or so. The last 1.4 km was quit quick. The hike is not that hard or tiring. Lots of little flies flying around you but didn’t bite, just annoying. We used trekking poles and that helped a lot. Unfortunately, it rained on the way out. The multiple shelters can in handy. The path is relatively new but beware it can slippery. Well worth the 30 RMB entrance ticket.

Ailao Mountain One-Day Tour: A Fantastic Journey of Encountering Nature and History I embarked on a one-day tour to the Ailao Mountain Nature Reserve in Yuxi on the weekend. I thought it was just an ordinary trip, but I was surprised. As soon as I entered the reserve, the fresh air hit me, a breath mixed with the fragrance of soil and plants, which instantly dispelled my fatigue from the journey. The scenery along the way is like a slowly unfolding landscape painting, with rolling mountains and shady trees. Occasionally, you can see a few wisps of smoke rising from the villages in the mountains, like a paradise. Nanen Waterfall is the first stop of my trip. Standing under the waterfall, I was shocked by the scene in front of me. The huge water flow cascades down from the steep cliff, majestic, and the splashing water sparkles with crystal light under the sunlight, like a dream. The roar of the waterfall is deafening, but it makes people feel particularly calm, as if all the troubles have been washed away by the rushing water. Continue along the winding mountain road and you will arrive at Shimen Gorge. The stream here is clear and the stones in the stream are colorful, shining in the sunlight. The stone walls on both sides of the canyon are towering into the sky, covered with moss and vines, as if telling the vicissitudes of time. Walking on the plank road in the canyon, the sound of gurgling water and crisp birdsong is in my ears, as if I am in a fairyland. At noon, I tasted the local specialties at a farmhouse in the reserve. There are fresh Ailao Mountain native chickens, fragrant wild vegetables, and rice cooked with local rice. Every bite is full of strong local flavor, which makes people aftertaste endlessly. In the afternoon, I visited the Longxi Aristocratic Manor. This manor has a long history and unique architectural style, which combines the architectural features of the Han and Yi nationalities. The houses in the manor are scattered and well-arranged, with carved beams and painted buildings, showing the glory and style of the Longxi aristocratic family in those days. Walking in the manor, it seems to travel through time and space, back to that distant era, and feel the thickness and vicissitudes of history. Finally, I came to Jinshan Primeval Forest. The moment I stepped into the forest, it seemed as if I entered a world isolated from the world. The tall trees covered the sky, and the sun shone through the gaps in the leaves, forming golden beams of light. The ground was covered with thick fallen leaves, which were soft to walk on, and some rare plants and wild animals could be seen from time to time. Here, I felt the magic and greatness of nature, and I also realized more deeply the importance of protecting the natural ecology. One day passed in a flash, and when I left Ailao Mountain, I was full of reluctance. This one-day trip to Ailao Mountain not only allowed me to appreciate the beautiful natural scenery, but also let me appreciate the rich history and culture, and I gained a lot. If you also want an intimate contact with nature, you might as well take a walk in Ailao Mountain. I believe you will also be impressed by its charm.
