World Heritage Slave Trade in the Atlantic This cultural heritage left by European colonists in Africa's history of slave trade can evoke memories of history and thus play an educational role for future generations. For only by not forgetting history can we move forward. The first Gorée Island, which was listed as a world heritage site in 1978, was a blood-tear witness to the Atlantic slave trade. The following year, Ghana’s Walter, Fort and Castle of Greater Accra and the Midwest were also listed on the World Heritage List as witnesses to the Atlantic slave trade. Ghana's slave castles are spread along the Gulf of Guinea and form a unique series of buildings from east to west, full name is the fortress and castle of Walter, Greater Accra and the Midwest (Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions). In 1979, the World Heritage Committee (WHC) considered it to be in line with the criteria for the application of Article 6 and entered the World Heritage Site. Ghana's slave castle is directly linked to the great historical event of the Atlantic slave trade, an important symbol of Europe's encounter with Africa and the starting point for African immigrants abroad. During European-African contact and interaction, these buildings (materials) were first used in the gold and ivory trade, and then in the slave trade, shaping not only African history, but world history.
