"North Dunhuang, South Dazu." Before I went to see the Dazu stone carvings, I thought this sentence was just a saying, because Dunhuang is much more popular. However, when you really come to Dazu and face the Buddha, you can vaguely see the wind of the Tang and Song dynasties for a thousand years. Tens of thousands of exquisitely carved cliff statues are quietly hidden between the mountains. It integrates the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, lifelike, breathtaking. We just caught up with a rainy day, which added a layer of mist to the already mysterious stone carvings, and even my son said it felt like an outdoor adventure. · What to see in Dazu🦶 stone carvings? ✔️With its name in Dunhuang, it shows its important position in the history of Chinese grotto art. ✔️Compared with other grottoes, the characteristic of Dazu stone carvings is secularization. The Dazu stone carvings began in the Tang Dynasty and are distributed in five areas: Baoding Mountain, North Mountain, South Mountain, Shizhuan Mountain, and Shimen Mountain. Now only Baoding Mountain and North Mountain are open. 1⃣️Baoding Mountain: 📌Recommend going to Baoding Mountain in the morning, watch digital movies (need to make an appointment when buying tickets), there are two, one is regular and one is spherical, a bit like Dunhuang. 📌Then take the sightseeing car to Baoding Mountain to see the main body of the stone carvings. All the iconic stone carvings are here. 📌After visiting Baoding Mountain, take a car to the Stone Carving Museum to learn more about stone carving culture. 2⃣️North Mountain: It is about half an hour's drive from Baoding Mountain. You can drive by yourself or take a scenic shuttle bus. The statues here are earlier than Baoding Mountain, the scale is not large but very exquisite, there is a saying "Baoding is lively, North Mountain is the way". And there is a night scene🌌 here, watching the stone carvings under the light at night has a more mysterious feeling, anyway, I dare not go alone. 3⃣️Li Family Ancestral Hall: There is a small waterfall and a man-made reservoir here, those who like the outdoors can come and walk around. 4⃣️Mingshan Temple: This is in Anyue, you need to drive by yourself, the scale is not large. But the reason why the stone carvings here🔥 are popular is that after being eroded by the wind, the Buddha statue has a horizontal texture, which is very artistic. If it is not well protected, maybe after many years, these stone carvings will merge with the rocks again and become their original appearance, a bit emotional. · The National Day holiday is coming soon, if you want to come to Sichuan and Chongqing to play, I recommend you to go to Dazu to see, experience the last monument in the history of world grotto art!

We took a tour from Chongqing, and drove the 1.5hrs to Dazu. We visited a few sites, including Beishan, The Dazu museum and Baodingshan. There are other areas to see, though probably easier to get to with your own transport. I think it might be nice also to see some of the lesser visited areas to avoid the crowds! The carvings and caves themselves are extensive, well-preserved and varied. There is enough to keep you occupied - and it might be interesting also to see the Dazu movie (though we weren't able to do so on our tour!). It's quite a tiring day out, with lots of walking, and maybe some overload in terms of carvings and statues for some - but if you're interested in Buddhism & Taoism, Chinese history and these types of caves, it's well worth a trip! #dazu #history #buddhism #taoism #caves
