Haystack Rock

Haystack Rock is one of the most iconic natural landmarks on the Oregon coast. This massive sea stack stands approx. 235 feet (approx. 72 m) tall along the Pacific coast and is named for its resemblance to a traditional haystack. Formed by ancient volcanic activity over millions of years, the hard basalt structure was gradually shaped by long-term wave and wind erosion into the spectacular rock formation that stands independently off the coast today. Haystack Rock not only features a unique geological view but is also an important local ecological conservation area. The area surrounding the rock hosts a rich intertidal ecosystem. During low tide, visitors can approach the rock to observe marine life such as starfish, sea anemones, and crabs, experiencing the diversity of the coastal natural environment. It also serves as a habitat and breeding ground for various seabirds. From spring to summer, visitors have the opportunity to observe activities of birds such as puffins, showcasing the ecological value of the close connection between the rock and marine life.
