The building itself was originally owned by Wu Jintang (1855 ～ 1926), a Chinese industrialist active in Kobe, formerly known as its villa "Songhai Biezhuang". In the spring of 1915, on the east side of "Songhai Biezhuang", this octagonal three-story pavilion "Empathy Pavilion" was built, because its appearance looks like six corners, in the local people affectionately called "Danzi six corner hall". Sun Wen and "Songhai Biezhuang" (Empathy Pavilion) origin, began on March 14, 1913 Sun Wenlai god. At that time, the Chinese and the economic community of Kobe held a welcome luncheon, which was located in "Songhai Biezhuang". After that, in November 1983, Hyogo County took over the management of the "Empathy Pavilion" Kobe Overseas Chinese Association and organized the renovation project. On November 12, 1984, on the day of Sun Wen's birthday, the "Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall" was opened to the public, and in December 1993, it was designated as a key tangible cultural heritage of Hyogo County. In November 2001, the Empathy Pavilion was designated as a key national cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture and Science. In October 2005, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was renamed the Sun Wen Memorial Hall. The exhibition focuses on the historical origins of Japan and Sun Wen, Kobe and Sun Wen, and also introduces the life of Mr. Wu Jintang and the changes of the Empathy Pavilion.
