Cotopaxi Volcano

Cotopaxi Volcano is located in central Ecuador, with an elevation of approx. 5,897 m. It is one of the most active volcanoes in South America and one of the few active cone-shaped volcanoes in the world. Its nearly symmetrical, snow-capped peak, along with the surrounding moorlands and lakes, creates a unique highland view, all protected within Parque Nacional Cotopaxi. The volcano is located approx. 60 km from the capital, Quito, a drive of approx. 1.5 hours, making it perfect for a day tour or a short hike.

Travelers can begin their exploration at the park entrance, where observation decks and short trails are available to help you acclimatize to the high altitude. Those with plenty of energy can challenge themselves by hiking to the base camp, though advance booking is required. Casual visitors may prefer horseback riding or cycling activities. Wild horses and Andean foxes are commonly seen around the volcano, and photography enthusiasts can capture the spectacular view of the snow-capped peak reflected in the lake when the clouds clear.
