based on 202 reviewsSiegestor is a three-arched, classical-style structure commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Modeled after the Arch of Constantine and built from light-colored limestone, it was completed in the mid-19th century and stands approx. 20m high and 24m wide.
The bronze sculpture group at the top is a highlight: the goddess "Bavaria" riding a chariot pulled by four lions—the lions are the heraldic symbol of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled the region for centuries. The structure also features multiple layers of reliefs depicting battle scenes and local scenery.
Originally built to glorify the army, the structure was severely damaged by air raids during World War II. During post-war reconstruction, it was kept in a simplified form, and the side facing the old town was inscribed with a new dedication: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, reminding of peace," transforming it into a monument that serves as a reminder of peace.
