It was built to house and display the works of Edvard Munch, the Norwegian artist behind the world-famous masterpiece, The Scream. The museum opened its new building in 2021, boasting 13 floors of exhibition space. It’s an absolute must-visit for any art lover traveling to Norway. The ultimate highlight is, of course, The Scream 😱. The museum holds 8 versions of it in its collection and rotates the display between the painting, the pastel drawing, and the print. You can always count on seeing at least one version on display at any given time. This rotation is necessary because works on paper and cardboard are fragile and require limited light exposure. Beyond The Scream, the museum features a vast array of Munch's other works, including paintings, sketches, prints, and more. With over 26,000 pieces by Munch out of a total collection of more than 42,000 items, visitors get a comprehensive look into the artist's creative evolution and life story. I visited Norway in May, and it was one of those trips that stays with you long after you've returned home. The vibe there is completely unique: breathtaking nature, mountains, fjords, waterfalls, and a sense of incredible tranquility all around. What struck me most was the harmony between nature and urban life. Oslo is modern and chill, but just a short drive away, the landscape completely transforms. It feels like every view is a postcard. 🏔️ May turned out to be a fantastic time for a trip: the days are long, nature is waking up, yet you still feel that crisp, authentic northern atmosphere. I also particularly remember the cleanliness, the relaxed pace of life, and how much people respect personal space. Norway felt extremely comfortable, though it is definitely a pricey destination! 😅 It was the kind of trip where I didn't feel like rushing to see everything; I just wanted to slow down, look around, and soak in the moment. I definitely want to go back to Norway, especially to explore more of the fjords and the northern part of the country. 🇳🇴❤️

The MUNCH Museum was one of the highlights of my time in Oslo. While many people visit for The Scream, the museum is so much more. It’s an opportunity to explore the life and work of Edvard Munch through thousands of paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs that delve into love, anxiety, loneliness, hope, and the many emotions that make us human. A few tips from my visit: · Plan your visit around the weather. If rain is in the forecast, this is the perfect day to explore the museum and spend a few immersive hours indoors. · Go early in the day, preferably on a weekday. If you’re anything like me and enjoy taking in art at a slower pace with fewer people around, you’ll appreciate the quieter galleries and the chance to connect more deeply with the artworks. · Start on the top floor. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of Oslo and the Oslofjord before making your way down through the exhibitions. I also found this route much more relaxed, as it naturally keeps you ahead of the larger crowds. · Don’t miss the MUNCH & Chocolate Factory exhibition if it’s on during your visit. It offered a thought-provoking perspective on racism, colonialism, and the history of the cocoa industry. Watching archival footage of Black workers and seeing how they were represented at the time was deeply moving. It was one of those exhibitions that leaves you reflecting long after you’ve left. Allow yourself 2–3 hours to explore at a comfortable pace. For me, the MUNCH Museum wasn’t just about seeing famous paintings—it was about experiencing the emotions, stories, and questions that Munch’s work continues to evoke. One thing that stood out to me about Oslo was how often its art invites you to reflect on the human experience. From 1 December 2025 to 4 January2026, we embarked on a epic journey of a lifetime in 35 days and 10 cities, fulfilling a full loop through Northern and Central Europe to chase winter lights, Christmas markets, and cozy moments on the road. This painstakingly planned bucket-list itinerary takes us from Berlin and Copenhagen up through Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø, Rovaniemi and Helsinki, before looping via Tallinn, Prague and Vienna. Our journey brought us to our third stop in Oslo, Norway and we absolutely fell in love with this captivating Norwegian capital! Oslo is an incredibly beautiful city! It’s compact, walkable, and so easy to get around. 🇳🇴Oslo Norway 📅 7-10 December 2025 Christmas market: 🎄Jul i Vinterland We visited one of the biggest Christmas markets in Norway in 2025, and it was truly unforgettable. Wandering through the vibrant stalls was a real highlight of the trip, with the lively Christmas atmosphere and constant laughter spreading to everyone around. The air was filled with the delicious aroma of festive foods and sweets, wrapping you in warmth and instantly putting you in the perfect happy Christmas mood. Sightseeing: 📍Opera House 📍Munch 📍Barcode street food 📍Karl Johans Gate 📍Mathallen Oslo 🥩HELT VILT (Completely Wild) We had our very first authentic Norwegian wild game cuisine at HElT VILT, a very local Nordic restaurant in Mathallen Oslo! we ordered the Arctic Journey and had our very first taste of Reindeer, Moose and Whale meat! Not to forget, we also had the delicious Reindeer Stew which was incredible. The service was amazing with the server explaining each dish to us patiently, making this the perfect welcoming start to our Oslo adventure! 🏨 Accommodation 📍Comfort Xpress Inn Oslo Our stay at Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station placed us right in the city center, with a grocery store, money changer, pharmacy, Karl Johans gate, and tram and bus stops practically at our doorstep. We enjoyed stunning views from our window overlooking the Opera House and harbourfront, plus surprisingly spacious and comfortable rooms with friendly, welcoming service. I took a walk from Oslo Central Station, passing the Opera House and the Munch Museum, along the waterfront all the way to Akershus Fortress. 😊 It’s a great way to soak in the Oslo atmosphere, even if you’re short on time! ♪ Start at Oslo Central Station! 📍 Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) ↓ 🎭 The Opera House (Operahuset) ↓ 🖼️ Munch Museum (MUNCH) ↓ 🧖‍♀️ Waterfront Stroll Take a walk while admiring the floating saunas, seagulls, and massive cruise ships docked at the harbor. ⛴️🌊 ↓ 🏰 Akershus Fortress (Akershus festning) The Opera House is just a short walk from Oslo Central Station. You can actually walk on its roof, so I highly recommend checking that out if you have a moment! ✨ From there, head over to the Munch Museum with its striking, unique design. Then, keep heading west along the seaside promenade toward Akershus Fortress. It feels amazing to just wander along the water here. 😊 With floating saunas and benches scattered along the path, you get to experience a different side of Oslo compared to the busy city center. It took me about an hour at a slow pace, stopping to take photos and enjoy the view. Keep in mind that this time is just for the walk itself. If you want to go inside the Opera House or Akershus Fortress for a tour, you’ll definitely need more time. For the trip back, I called a taxi via Bolt from Akershus Fortress to Oslo Central Station. 🚕 It cost me 100 NOK. 😊 If you still have the energy and time, you can also walk back to the city center from there. 🏰 ✈️ Perfect for Layovers This route is ideal if you have a long layover in Oslo and want to explore the city for a bit! 😊 Just a heads-up: if you plan to go inside the Munch Museum (MUNCH), make sure to add at least another two hours to your schedule. Next time you have a few hours to spare in Oslo, I highly recommend giving this walk a try! ♪
