Review of a 6-Day Trip to Southern France (Provence & Côte d’Azur): Cities That Made Me Fall in Love

This spontaneous trip to Southern France turned out to be one of my most memorable European trips. The sea views, the people, and the relaxed pace of life were all wonderful.

Day 1: Marseille – A Charming Port City

We started our trip by taking the train to Marseille and chose to stay near the Vieux-Port (Old Port) area for convenience, reasonable hotel prices, and easy access to almost everything on foot.

In the evening, I recommend walking to Place Honoré d’Estienne d’Orves, just steps from the Old Port. This area is full of restaurants serving fresh seafood, where you can choose your menu right from the stalls. The atmosphere is lively but not chaotic, perfect for sipping wine or light drinks while people-watching.

⸻

Day 2: Slow-Paced Strolling

Today was a relaxed day. We explored the city center, visited the Natural History Museum of Marseille, and then hiked up to the fortress for stunning views of the sailboats lined up in the harbor.

The weather was pleasantly cool, although it can get quite sunny in the summer. Recommended to bring a hat and plenty of water.

⸻

Day 3: Coffee, Market, and Travel to Nice

In the morning, stop for coffee and stroll through the market near the old harbor. Lots of delicious and affordable food, great atmosphere.

In the afternoon, take a Bolt train to the train station and then a train to Nice, a dream Mediterranean seaside resort town.

⸻

Day 4: Nice – The City That Impressed Me the Most

The day I arrived in Nice was unforgettable.

I was dragging my large suitcase, looking for a bus stop to get to my hotel. Along the way, a group of elderly men approached me and asked where I was going. They then helped me get on a bus. At the transfer point, an elderly couple helped me get on the tram.

The kindness was in everyone helping each other without expecting anything in return.

Nice's tram system has three main lines (L1, L2, and L3), which are very easy to use and within walking distance of the hotel.

In the evening, I looked for something to eat. Near the train station, there was a Vietnamese restaurant that sold Pad Krapow (Thai basil chicken). It was delicious! Although not authentic Thai food, it satisfied my craving for Asian cuisine. Prices are around 17–24 euros per meal.

⸻

Day 5: City Life in Nice

No special plans for today.

Walk around the city center, have coffee, stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, then hike up to the viewpoint which has an "I Love Nice" sign for photos.

The view from the top overlooks the blue Mediterranean Gulf against the orange rooftops of the city – stunning.

What I liked most about Nice is the pace of life. Everyone seems unhurried. Sitting in a cafe, reading a book, or walking along the beach, time seems to slow down.

⸻

Day 6: Monaco – A Small Country Full of Luxury

The train from Nice to Monaco doesn't take long, the fare is about 2–3 euros (as far as I remember).

My recommendation is to buy a SIM card or turn on internet roaming beforehand, because we didn't have internet that day. We just followed other people and eventually found our way to various places by accident.

But one thing I noticed is that Monaco is a safe, clean city, full of luxury cars, yachts, and casinos.

I jokingly thought…

“I don't think I need to worry about being robbed.” "Because it looked like he was more afraid of us robbing him."

It's a joke I still laugh at myself when I think about it.

Ended the day with drinks with friends.

In total…about 10 glasses.

Even the foreigners at the next table turned to look.

But in the end…

Drunk…but not lost.

How I got back to the hotel…

To this day, I still can't remember 😂

⸻

My Impressions of Southern France

For me, Southern France isn't just about the sea or beautiful views.

It's the smiles of the people, the kindness of strangers, the small cafes along the streets, the fresh seafood, and the atmosphere that makes you want to slow down.

If I have the chance to go back…

I would probably choose to sit and sip coffee at the same cafe, walk along the same beach, and let time slow down again.

Provence & Côte d’Azur is one of the places that taught me that…

“Sometimes, the joy of traveling isn't about how many places you visit, but about how much time you spend in each place.”
