23°C Hezhou: The ultimate family getaway! Stay at a creekside homestay in Gupo Mountain and play in the water right outside your door — traveler post in Hezhou

23°C Hezhou: The ultimate family getaway! Stay at a creekside homestay in Gupo Mountain and play in the water right outside your door

When traveling with kids in summer, I just want to find a place with clear water, cool temperatures, and few people. Gupo Mountain in Hezhou, Guangxi, is a cool hidden gem in eastern Guangxi. The average summer temperature is around 23°C. The mountain breeze blows away all the summer heat. Everywhere you look, there are lush primeval forests and crystal-clear mountain streams. The air is filled with the scent of grass, trees, and moist soil. The key is that there is a Sanjie Gushi Forest Hot Spring Resort right next to the stream. You can step out the door and walk a few steps to step into the cool stream water. Adults can finally slow down their pace between the streams and forests. 📍 [2-day, 1-night relaxing cool getaway] Day 1: Arrive at Hezhou Station by high-speed rail and take a taxi directly to Sanjie Gushi Homestay at the foot of Gupo Mountain (about a 40-minute drive). In the afternoon, splash around in the shallow stream next to the homestay. In the evening, take a walk along the creek and watch the sunset dye the water a warm gold. At night, soak in the private hot spring pool at the homestay to wash away the fatigue. Day 2: In the morning, head to the Gupo Mountain Scenic Area. Walk along the gentle creekside trail, see the Xiangu Waterfall and the shallow mountain streams, and let the kids splash around and catch small fish in the shallows. In the afternoon, return to the stream by the homestay to continue playing in the water, or drink tea and relax in the courtyard before heading home at a leisurely pace. 🏨 [Creekside hot spring courtyard at the foot of Gupo Mountain] The Sanjie Gushi Homestay where we stayed is nestled in the forest next to the Gupo Mountain Scenic Area, surrounded by greenery, with a clear stream right beside it. The best part is that some room types come with a creek-view balcony and a private hot spring pool. You can play in the water by the creek during the day and soak in a warm bath at night—the kids slept soundly after playing all day. The service at the homestay is very thoughtful; you can buy attraction tickets and sightseeing bus tickets directly at the front desk, saving time on queuing. Adults can sit in the courtyard, drink tea, and listen to the sound of the stream while relaxing. This kind of laid-back vibe is much more comfortable than just sitting in air conditioning. 🎯 [3 highlights tested with kids] 💦 Splashing in the shallow stream: The stream next to the homestay is so clear you can see every grain of sand and stone on the bottom, and the shallows are gentle and safe. The kids rolled up their pant legs and stepped into the cool stream water, bending over to flip rocks and look for small shrimp. They giggled whenever they got splashed and wouldn't budge for the whole afternoon. 🫧 First hot spring experience in a private pool: When we returned to the room at night, the private hot spring pool was already filled with warm spring water. The kids soaked in the warm bath, and all the fatigue from playing in the water all day vanished. Looking up, we could even see the stars in the mountains. This rhythm of playing in the stream during the day and soaking in a warm bath at night is much more comfortable than rushing between tourist spots. 🌿 Nature classroom in the Gupo Mountain valley: The trails at Gupo Mountain are gentle and easy on the legs, flanked by ancient trees that block out the sun and moss-covered rocks. The kids squatted down to look at the ferns on the tree trunks, reached out to catch dew dripping from leaf tips, and excitedly pointed out butterflies flying by. This authentic forest experience is more vivid than any picture book. 💡 [A few practical tips] The stones by the stream are slippery, so non-slip water shoes are a must. Playing in the water gets you wet easily, so bring extra changes of clothes. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent, as there are quite a few bugs by the stream and in the forest. The Gupo Mountain attraction ticket is valid for 3 days and allows multiple entries, making it very flexible for planning your itinerary. The number of rooms at the homestay is limited, so remember to book in advance during peak season. After this 2-day, 1-night trip, the whole family was immersed in the coolness of the stream and the greenery of the forest. The kids were completely worn out from playing, and the adults were able to fully recharge. It’s truly rare to have such a comfortable and relaxing family time during the summer vacation.

Photography spots at Dailong Bridge — traveler post in Hezhou

Photography spots at Dailong Bridge

📷 [Front view of Dailong Bridge] To photograph Dailong Bridge, stand on the stone steps below the bridge so the arch and the water surface are both in the frame. Morning light hits the bridge, showing the true color of the stone slabs. Evening light is angled, coating the bridge in gold and making the reflection clear. Crouch down to make the bridge arch and its reflection in the water form a circle for the most balanced composition. 🪨 [Depth of the stone-paved street] The stone-paved streets in the town are narrow, and the old houses on both sides are tall. Stand in the middle of the street to shoot. The street extends into the distance, creating great depth. Early morning is best when there are fewer people and the stone slabs are clean. Rainy days are even better, as the reflection and moist colors of the stone slabs are something you won't find on sunny days. 🌳 [Canopy of the ancient banyan tree] The ancient banyan tree has a large canopy. Stand under the tree and shoot upwards to frame the shot with the branches, leaves, and sky. Standing in front of the canopy provides good proportions. Evening light leaks through the gaps in the branches, casting light spots on the stone road, which is very atmospheric. 🌾 [Fields outside the town] Huangyao is surrounded by karst peaks, and there are vast fields outside the town. In autumn, the rice turns golden, and the peaks stand at the edge of the fields. Stand on the ridge of the field and shoot toward the town to capture the ancient town's roofs, the peaks, and the fields in one frame. This is the most expansive view of the day. ⚠️ [Notes] The stone roads in the town are slippery, so be careful on rainy days. Most of the old houses are wooden structures, so do not climb on them or carve anything into them. The ancient town is most photogenic in the early morning when there are fewer people and the light is good, so don't sleep in. Carry an umbrella on rainy days to capture the unique reflections on the stone roads. Please refer to the scenic area's daily announcements for specific opening hours and restrictions.

Huangyao Ancient Town's bluestone roads — traveler post in Hezhou

Huangyao Ancient Town's bluestone roads

🪨 [The years of the stone streets] Huangyao Ancient Town in Hezhou, Guangxi, is hidden among karst peaks. The town is small but famous. The roads in the town are all bluestone, worn smooth and shiny after being walked on for hundreds of years. On rainy days, the stone slabs glisten, and water drips from the eaves of the old houses on both sides, creating a very atmospheric scene. 🌳 [Ancient banyan trees and ancient wells] Huangyao has many ancient banyan trees, with several being hundreds of years old. Their canopies spread out, covering half the street. There is an "Xianren Ancient Well" in the town, where spring water gushes from the cracks in the rocks. Locals wash clothes and vegetables here—a daily routine that has continued for hundreds of years, which is a novel sight for tourists. 🌉 [Dailong Bridge] The Dailong Bridge in the town has an arched deck. Water flows beneath it, and the stone slabs on the bridge have been worn smooth by foot traffic. The area by the bridge is the most photogenic spot in the ancient town. In the evening, the slanted light makes the bridge and its reflection merge into one. 🏮 [The ancient town at night] After nightfall, red lanterns light up along the streets of Huangyao. The bluestone roads glisten, and the leaves of the ancient banyan trees turn into silhouettes in the light. The town is quieter at night than during the day. Finding a teahouse to sit in, listening to the chirping of insects and the sound of flowing water, is very relaxing. 📌 [Practical tips] The Huangyao Ancient Town admission ticket includes the main attractions. There are many accommodation options in the town; staying overnight allows you to better experience the tranquility of the ancient town. Most of the inns in the town are converted from old houses, making an overnight stay even more atmospheric. Fermented black beans are Huangyao's signature product; take a jar with you when you leave. Please refer to the latest announcements from the scenic area for opening hours and ticket policies.

I didn't go to Jiangnan, but I found the most beautiful water town in Fuchuan, Guangxi — traveler post in Hezhou

I didn't go to Jiangnan, but I found the most beautiful water town in Fuchuan, Guangxi

This place in Guangxi is a true hidden gem. I can't wait to share it with you. Fuchuan is located at the intersection of Hunan, Guangxi, and Guangdong, boasting rich ethnic customs and historical and cultural landscapes. It is very convenient to reach from Guangdong and Hunan. The local dialect is identical to that of Guilin, and the food culture is similar, though less spicy than in Guilin. Recommended one-day itinerary: Guishi Reservoir – Shenxian Lake – Ancient Ming City night tour Located on the upper reaches of the Hejiang River in Fuchuan, Guishi Reservoir is one of the six major reservoirs in Guangxi and the main drinking water source for Hezhou. During the dry season, it reveals a strange stone grassland, while in the wet season, its blue waters resemble a mini Erhai Lake. The blue sky, white clouds, windmills, and islands create a picturesque scene. The Fuchuan Shenxian Lake Scenic Area is located in the core area of the International Slow City in Fuli Town and is a national 4A-rated scenic spot. It is famous for its lake and mountain views and year-round flower seas, featuring Gesang flowers in spring and pink muhly grass in autumn. Cycling or strolling along the lakeside path allows you to fully enjoy the rural leisure of the "Slow City." Fuchuan Ancient Ming City was first built in the 29th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. It was a military stronghold on the Xiaohe Ancient Road and is one of the best-preserved ancient Ming cities in Guangxi. Inside the city, the bluestone streets are inlaid with copper coin patterns, and the Confucian Temple, Martial Temple, and ancient stage stand quietly. Six hundred years of time seem to have frozen here. 🏮 Night tour guide: After dark, lanterns light up one by one, and the coin patterns on the flower streets appear and disappear in the interplay of light and shadow. Stroll along Zhensheng Street, stop by "Mingcheng Tea & Coffee" for an osmanthus latte, and lean against the window to watch the figures moving under the city wall. On weekends, there are often "Mingcheng Appointment" live performances, and you can see intangible cultural heritage crafts like dragon dancing and brocade weaving at the Yao market. Taking a bite of golden, crispy Guotiao in the night breeze, the vibrant atmosphere of the ancient city settles into your stomach. Every year on the first day of the lunar new year, the annual Dragon Firework feast begins here. The scene is truly spectacular and well worth experiencing! This trip to Fuchuan—the night lanterns of the Ancient Ming City, the grassland windmills of Guishi Reservoir, and the flower-filled slow paths of Shenxian Lake—all combined to create a slow, healing feeling. What moved me most was that relaxed sense of not being in a rush. 🚗 Transportation: Self-driving is the most convenient, with about a 20-minute drive between attractions 🍗 Food: Don't miss the Guotiao, oil tea, and Yao-style cured meat 🏨 Accommodation: You can choose a homestay near the Ancient Ming City, where you can open your window at night to see the antique lanterns

Guangxi | An underrated ancient town, the Pomelo Lantern Festival is stunning

🏮 This is truly an underrated, niche, hidden gem of an ancient town. No crowds, just bluestone paths, ancient bridges, flowing water, and karst peaks for company. This national 5A-rated scenic spot, which originated in the Song Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties, is simple and tranquil, preserving over 300 intact Ming and Qing Lingnan-style buildings. It's perfect for a relaxing weekend stroll. Plus, photo spots are easy to find, and there's no need to wait in line. 📸 Photo spots: Dailong Bridge, Xingning Temple, Nongqu Garden, Dragon Claw Banyan, the lake in front of Nongqu Garden, the entrance, and intangible cultural heritage sugar painting 🌿 I only planned to stay for 2 hours, but ended up staying from the afternoon until night, and even caught the annual Pomelo Lantern Festival (Held annually on the 14th and 15th of the seventh lunar month at 7:30 PM) This is a traditional folk custom passed down in Huangyao for hundreds of years. The word for pomelo ("you") sounds the same as the word for blessing ("you"), so locals call them "peace lanterns" or "lucky lanterns." It was super crowded! So lively! 📌 Event highlights: · Villagers peel fresh pomelos on-site and use bamboo skewers to connect them into clusters · Led by a colorful paper dragon head, the pomelo lanterns are connected into a 40-meter-long dragon of light that floats down the Yao River · After the parade on the night of August 27, villagers will retrieve the pomelo lanterns and give them to tourists, symbolizing the collection of peace and good fortune for the whole year 🌿 Regular activities: [Fish and Dragon Leap over Yao River - Song Rhyme Starts a Millennium] Every Friday and Saturday night, enjoy an immersive Song-style grand show and Ao fish blessings. Daytime activities include regular performances in the ancient town, intangible cultural heritage shadow puppetry, the intangible cultural heritage fish and dragon experience hall, and a thousand-person sketching competition where you can watch the "thousand people painting the ancient county" art scene 🌿 · -- 📍 Address: Huangyao Ancient Town, northeast of Zhaoping County, Hezhou City, Guangxi 🚗 Transportation: · Self-driving: Navigate to "Huangyao Ancient Town". About 1 hour from Hezhou city center. From Guangdong: About 4.5 hours drive from Guangzhou. Huangyao Ancient Town

There are so many ancient towns nowadays, but very few have the rich history and cultural heritage of Huangyao Ancient Town. The town is beautiful, surrounded by karst landforms, and the ancient banyan trees exude a sense of history. It's definitely worth a visit.

Guposhan eco-tourism area

This trip to Gupo Mountain was definitely worthwhile! 💦The waterfall was at its lowest water level, so we took photos along the way. The dense trees allowed sunlight to filter through, making every shot a beautiful one.📸 What I want to praise most is the景区 service. Bringing the family wasn't tiring at all! 👍 The signs were clear, the restrooms were clean, and the staff were very helpful when we asked for directions. We also strolled around Fangjia Tea Garden and the winery, and relaxed on the large lawn – so comfortable! 😌 Half a day was well worth the ticket price, and I'll definitely come back!

Jade Stone Forest

The Jade Forest in Hezhou is definitely worth a visit; the scenery is beautiful. The jade stones are white marble, slowly exposed due to mining. The scenic area isn't too big or too small; you can walk through it in about two hours. It happened to be during the Qingming Festival, and along the way, we saw many people shoveling stones and setting off firecrackers on the mountain.

Xixi Forest Hot Spring Resort

The entire mountain is filled with hot spring pools. Although the weather wasn't cold in the first month of the lunar calendar, the children wanted to eat after soaking in the water, and we were wearing wet swimsuits. Not long after, we felt dizzy, had headaches, and vomited, but we returned home satisfied.

Ziyun Xianjing Scenic Area

The attraction is well-designed, and since there aren't many visitors right now, it's a good time to enjoy it at a leisurely pace. From the main gate to the cave entrance, it's 1.2 kilometers; you can take a round-trip electric cart for 8 yuan, or walk. At the cave entrance, guided tours are offered in batches, lasting about 40 minutes. Having a guide makes the experience much clearer, which is commendable.

Zhongshan Shuimo Tianyuan

The scenic area is actually quite large, especially the later parts with many beautiful views. However, walking around can be tiring, and it also requires the right time and lighting. With good lighting and the right season, it's truly beautiful, and I would definitely go again.

Hezhou Guposhan Banshan Hot Spring Resort

The restaurant's buffet breakfast is very rich, the hot spring area swimming pool is also nice, the cave is very photogenic, and the waiters are very friendly. The scenery is very good. The unlimited hot spring bathing is really great, and the unlimited hot spring bathing alone is very cost-effective and very cost-effective.

Hezhou Shibashui Original Ecological Scenic Spot

The hydrangeas are abundant and definitely worth seeing. There are tons of photo spots, perfect for photography enthusiasts. There are waterfalls, one of which looks like a miniature version of the Jiulong Waterfall in Qikong and Daqikong. There's also a slide where you can slide down in a flash.

Dailong Bridge

Huangyao Ancient Town, a Lingnan version of a dreamlike hometown. Nestled deep within karst mountains, surrounded by verdant peaks, a thousand years of time have polished the bluestone slabs of the ancient alleys to a smooth, rounded surface. Stone bridges and clear streams connect the old houses, scattered at varying heights, creating a poignant sense of nostalgia. Here, time can pass slowly; by the pond, under the banyan tree, a chair and a cup of tea, one can "sit for so long that one forgets the rising sun, and idly laugh at the busy white clouds." Or time can pass quickly; life is fleeting, like grass in autumn, decades and centuries seem like yesterday. All sorts of joys and sorrows seem to be etched into the vicissitudes of the ancient town, yet everything remains unchanged.

Huangyao Poetic Yaojiang Scenic Area

There are three small dams where you can experience the thrill of rushing through them, but it's only for a fleeting moment. The manual rafts are a bit pricey at 80 yuan per person. The whole trip takes about 40 minutes. The scenery is decent. If you don't want to crowd onto the Li River but prefer Huangyao Ancient Town, this is a good option. It's less crowded and the scenery is nice, so overall it's worth a visit.
