Li Xiaolu's Nanny-Level Travel Guide — traveler post in Kangding

Li Xiaolu's Nanny-Level Travel Guide

Five People's Road Trip Along the Lixiaolu Road | 3 Days 2 Nights, Taking in the Snow-capped Mountains, Red Rocks, and Colorful Forests of Western Sichuan from the Car Window If you ask me if there's a road in Western Sichuan that can combine snow-capped mountains, red rock beaches, primeval forests, alpine meadows, and colorful forests within 100 kilometers, all free and without long queues, I would answer without hesitation—the Lixiaolu Road. It's not a "scenic spot," but a road that is scenic in itself. Starting from Putou Town in Li County, crossing the Qionglai Mountains, and plunging into Jiesigou in Xiaojin County, the entire route is about 96 kilometers long. It was fully paved and opened to traffic in 2026, and can be driven by sedans. Five people in one car, 3 days and 2 nights, not rushing, not forcing your way into scenic spots, slowing down—that's the right way to experience this road. Pre-trip Preparations | This road isn't difficult, but it's riddled with potholes. Vehicles: The official description is "paved throughout, suitable for sedans," but some sections have sharp bends, steep slopes, and loose gravel, making SUVs more suitable. If your vehicle has a low chassis, avoid driving after rain; it shouldn't be a problem. Fill up your tank in Lixian or Xiaojin county before departure—there are no gas stations or shops along the entire Lixiao Road, so top up when your tank is below half full. Traffic Hours: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Entry into the mountains is prohibited after 6:00 PM; avoid driving at night. Speed limits are 30-60 km/h on cliff bends; honk your horn before meeting oncoming traffic. Altitude Sickness: The highest point on the entire road is around the Daerpu and Lixiao tunnels, at an altitude of approximately 3800-3850 meters. The good news is that both nights' accommodations are at altitudes below 2400 meters—approximately 1800 meters in Lixian and 2367 meters in Xiaojin, significantly reducing the probability of altitude sickness. However, avoid running and jumping in Daerpu; walk slowly and keep one or two oxygen cylinders in the car. Accommodation: Five people need three rooms. The first night, stay in Lixian or Gulgou. Gulgou's hot spring hotels are recommended; they have free parking, and you can relax in the hot springs. The second night, stay in Xiaojin County. Choose a guesthouse or hotel with free parking; it's cost-effective and convenient for dining. Two nights in three rooms will cost approximately 1800-3000 yuan. Luggage: The temperature difference between day and night in the high-altitude area is over 15℃. A windproof jacket and a light down jacket are essential. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are indispensable. Download offline maps in advance, as there is basically no signal in Jiesigou and Daerpu sections. Bring enough dry food, drinking water, and a power bank, as there are almost no supply points along the way. Day 1|Chengdu → Lixian, Adapt to the Altitude Morning|Chengdu → Lixian, 2.5 hours Depart from Chengdu in the morning, taking the Rongchang Expressway through Wenchuan to Lixian, a journey of approximately 2.5 hours. You can have lunch in Wenchuan along the way, or take a quick look at the watchtowers of Taoping Qiang Village (exterior view is free, just take a few photos and leave). Afternoon | Gurgou: Soaking in the hot springs is more important than rushing to see the sights. After arriving in Gurgou, check into your hotel first, don't rush into the side roads. Gurgou is at an altitude of about 1800 meters, the best place to acclimatize. In the afternoon, soak in the hotel's hot springs to relieve the fatigue of driving. Five people chatting in the pool is more worthwhile than rushing to any viewpoint. Evening | Yak Meat Hot Pot Have a yak meat hot pot in Gurgou town, with barley cakes, about 60-80 yuan per person. Get some rest, tomorrow is the main event. Day 1 Cost Reference: Fuel + tolls approximately 300 yuan | Accommodation 900-1500 yuan (three rooms) | Hot springs (included in hotel or extra) approximately 200-300 yuan | Dinner 350 yuan | Total approximately 1750-2450 yuan Day 2 | Full Route Traverse of the Li Trail, from Red Stone Beach to "Little Switzerland" 7:30 AM | Fill Up Gas and Head into the Mountains Starting from Gulgou, fill up the gas in Li County or Putou Town, then drive to the 0km mark of the Li Trail. The first 20km follow the Suoluo Valley upstream. The valley is humid, with Tibetan and Qiang villages scattered along the banks, and the forests gradually become denser. Morning | Liangtaigou Red Stone Beach + Leishenwang Waterfall The Red Stone Beach is located at approximately kilometer 38, with free parking available by the roadside. Orange-red pebbles cover the stream banks in the valley, with fir forests and snow-capped mountains in the background—a striking contrast. Red stones are extremely sensitive to their environment, surviving only in places with clean air and excellent water quality. Just admire them; don't step on or move them. A short distance further is Leishenwang Waterfall, a 10-minute hike after parking. The mist and snow-capped mountains create a tranquil atmosphere, and the wooden bridge offers excellent photo opportunities. We had a simple picnic at noon on the roadside meadow in Hongshitan – self-heating rice, bread, and fruit; everything tasted delicious in the sunshine. Afternoon | Lixiao Tunnel + Da'erpu: The Highlight of the Entire Route After passing through the 7-kilometer-long Lixiao Tunnel, the altitude instantly rose to approximately 3850 meters, directly facing the continuous snow-capped mountains – this is the most breathtaking vantage point on the Lixiao route, where many people stop to take photos. Continuing on, we reached Da'erpu, the essence of the entire route. At an altitude of approximately 3800 meters, the expansive alpine meadow was surrounded by snow-capped mountains, with streams flowing through it, cattle and sheep scattered about, and small wooden cabins standing on the meadow, like stepping onto a Windows desktop. Five people should spend at least 40 minutes here, walking slowly, taking photos at their own pace, and avoiding running or jumping. Evening | Crossing the Pass and Entering Xiaojin Continuing downhill from Da'erpu, we entered Jiesigou. Unlike the open terrain of the Heli County section, Jiesi Valley is a secluded and deep primeval forest, densely covered with spruce and fir trees, with rushing streams and stone houses of the Jiarong Tibetan people built along the slopes. We arrived in Xiaojin County in the evening and checked into our hotel at an altitude of approximately 2367 meters, ensuring a good night's sleep. Evening | Wild Mushroom and Yak Hot Pot The wild mushroom and yak hot pot in Xiaojin County is recommended by locals. It features matsutake mushrooms and porcini mushrooms paired with fresh and flavorful yak meat in a sweet broth. Five people ate until they were stuffed for 60-80 yuan each. Day 2 Cost Reference: Accommodation 900-1500 yuan (three rooms) | Fuel approximately 150 yuan | Food approximately 400 yuan | Total approximately 1450-2050 yuan. Day 3 | Xiaojin → Jiajin Mountain → Chengdu, Saving the Colorful Forest for Last Morning | Xiaojin → Jiajin Mountain Pass We departed from Xiaojin and returned to Chengdu via Jiajin Mountain. Jiajin Mountain Pass, at an altitude of 4114 meters, is the highest point of the entire route. From mid-October to early November, the colorful forests along this route undergo a concentrated transformation, with layers of red birch, larch, and fir trees, creating a stunning panorama of snow-capped mountains, sea of clouds, and meadows. Don't spend more than 15 minutes taking photos at the pass; due to the strong winds and high altitude, descend immediately after taking your pictures. Noon | Simple Lunch in Baoxing or Along the Way After crossing Jiajin Mountain, the altitude gradually decreases. Have lunch in Baoxing or other towns along the way, costing approximately 30-40 yuan per person. Afternoon | Return to Chengdu Return to Chengdu via Baoxing and Ya'an, a journey of about 5 hours. Five people took turns driving, arriving in Chengdu in the evening. The trunk was filled with photos of the Red Stone Beach, memories of the meadows at Da'erpu, and the colorful forests of Jiajin Mountain. Day 3 Cost Estimate: Fuel + Tolls approximately 350 yuan | Lunch 200 yuan | Total approximately 550 yuan. Budget Overview | Moderate Comfort for Five People, Not Too Expensive Item | Cost (Total for Five People) Round-trip fuel + tolls: Approx. 800 RMB Accommodation (Two nights, three rooms): Approx. 1800-3000 RMB Lixiaolu Route: Free Hot Springs/Issue Parking Fees: Approx. 300-500 RMB Food (All-inclusive for three days): Approx. 1000-1200 RMB Oxygen Cylinders/Snacks: Approx. 200 RMB Total: Approx. 4100-5700 RMB The Lixiaolu Route has no entrance fees or tolls. The biggest expenses are accommodation and fuel. For a moderately comfortable trip for five people, you can complete this "Little Duku Highway of Western Sichuan" for less than 1200 RMB per person. Any extra budget can be used to upgrade to a private hot spring hotel in Gulgou for one night, or stay an extra night in Xiaojin to slow down the pace for another day. Practical Tips | Follow These Guides to Avoid 90% of Pitfalls 1. Fill up your tank in Lixian or Xiaojin before entering the mountains – there are no gas stations along the entire route, so don't wait until the fuel light comes on. 2. Exit the mountains before 6 PM – the daily exit time is 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so don't stay out too late. 3. Don't jump or jog on Da'erpu – the altitude is approximately 3800 meters, so walk slowly and keep an oxygen cylinder in your car. 4. Red rocks are best viewed from a distance – stepping on or moving them will cause them to fade and become unusable. 5. Don't stop randomly on curves – find designated parking areas, and honk and slow down when passing oncoming traffic near cliff edges. 6. Download offline maps beforehand – there is basically no cell phone signal in Jiesigou and Da'erpu sections. 7. Don't try to cram in Bipenggou and Siguniang Mountain in one day – the Lixian-Xiaolu road is already full enough; trying to do more will only lead to driving at night. 8. The best time to visit is from September to early November—colorful forests, snow-capped mountains, and red rocks are all framed together. After November, the road may be closed due to snow and ice restrictions. The Lixiao Road isn't the kind of road you need to "conquer." It's more like a window to western Sichuan, framing snow-capped mountains, red rocks, meadows, forests, and colorful forests all within its 96 kilometers, then telling you: drive slowly, no rush. When you five stand on the meadow of Daerpu, watching the stream meander from the foot of the snow-capped mountains, and cattle and sheep leisurely crossing the road; when you pass through the Lixiao Tunnel, and the snow-capped mountains rush towards you the moment you emerge—you'll understand that the beauty of some roads isn't in the destination, but in the journey itself, where you're reluctant to press the accelerator too hard. Five people in one car, three days and two nights, capturing the layers of western Sichuan through the car window, and imprinting the free and vast Lixiao Road into your memory.

Yuzixi, Western Sichuan | A wilderness viewing platform facing Mount Gongga — traveler post in Kangding

Yuzixi, Western Sichuan | A wilderness viewing platform facing Mount Gongga

If you want an easy way to see Mount Gongga when visiting Western Sichuan, you must come to Yuzixi. No strenuous hiking is required. With its gentle meadow platform and 360° panoramic mountain views, the main peak of Mount Gongga stands clearly before your eyes when the weather is good. The sunset is the most worth waiting for. The setting sun dyes the clouds orange-red, light slowly spreads across the snow-capped peaks, and the wind blows from the wilderness—it is quiet and breathtaking. When the blue hour arrives, the silhouette of the snow-capped mountains becomes even colder, creating a completely different atmosphere. 📍Location: Yuzixi Starlight Camp, Kangding, Western Sichuan ⏰Best time: Autumn, 5:30 PM–7:00 PM (sunset period) 🚗Self-driving: About 40 minutes from Xinduqiao. Drive slowly on the last short stretch of mountain road. 💡Tips: The altitude is high, so be sure to protect yourself from the wind and keep warm. There is a huge temperature difference between day and night. Visibility is only good on sunny days, so check the weather forecast before you go. There is no shelter, so be sure to wear sunscreen.

Half a Year in Ganzi, and the Frames That Got Left Behind 🏔️ — traveler post in Kangding

Half a Year in Ganzi, and the Frames That Got Left Behind 🏔️

May → midsummer · Garzê, western Sichuan · photos from between workdays Since May I've mostly been moving around Ganzi Prefecture, working, and quietly keeping the good light whenever it showed up. Most of those frames are already out in the world. These are the ones that got left behind — not lesser, just still sitting in the folder. July and August: the west face of Genie from Laozhelongba, Kamelong seen from Genie's Eye, and Chongbenhaluo over Zawala Pass — three different ridges, three different ways of standing still. Back in May, Yulong Lacuo in Dege and the green quiet of Duopugou. Then midsummer again on the Xiaomaoya grassland in Litang, and down into Cuopugou. Along the northern Sichuan–Tibet road: Dangzhen Tso, Yaqing Temple, the snow line of Kawaluori. And two summer days at Kasa Lake and Baihaizi. All of it inside one prefecture. Ganzi sits in the heart of the Great Hengduan ranges, and it changes its whole mood with the season — so the same road never gives you the same mountain twice. It's a treasure of a place, and half a year only made the folder thicker. If you ever get the time, come and look for yourself. 🏔️ ChinaTravel #Ganzi #Garze #WesternSichuan #Hengduan #Genie #Litang #Dege #LandscapePhotography #SlowTravel #RoadTrip #TripMoments

Places That Peaked at First Sight 🏔️ — traveler post in Kangding

Places That Peaked at First Sight 🏔️

12 frames · Xinjiang & western Sichuan · some views you only get once Some places meet you at their best and never look quite that way again. More railings, more boardwalks, a dusty path where flowers used to be — and meadows that need a couple of years to heal. I'm glad I saw these early. Good weather still helps; the rest is pure timing. 1–3 · Sayram Lake, Xinjiang — the same lakeside bend, three times: a white SUV, pink blooms soft in the foreground, then just blue water, snow peaks and a line of birds. The shore has more facilities now; even the same light wouldn't feel this untouched. 4–6 · Xiata, Xinjiang — cloud caught halfway up the spires, a van on a ribbon of road, then horseback through a purple-white sea of blossoms with almost no one around. That trail is boardwalk and dust today. 7–8 · Jia'genba, Sichuan — e-se blossoms, a cobbled lane under backlit leaves, one white-flowering tree in a green amphitheatre. Catch a clear day and this one still comes back. 9–10 · Moon Lake, Sichuan — calm water, soft light, little changed; good weather is still the whole trick. 11–12 · Ganzi barley fields, Sichuan — jagged peaks turning gold at sunset, a red-roofed Tibetan house, green-to-yellow terraces, one figure walking the path between the power lines. You don't repeat a first sight. You just keep the file. 🌾 ChinaTravel #Xinjiang #SayramLake #Xiata #WesternSichuan #Ganzi #FirstSight #RoadTrip #LandscapePhotography #TripMoments #SlowTravel

Top-tier sunset photo spots in Western Sichuan — traveler post in Kangding

Top-tier sunset photo spots in Western Sichuan

I have organized the culture, pros, and cons of five attractions—Yuzixi, Gelam Sky City, Moshi Park, Tagong Temple, and Muya Grand Temple—to help you compare and choose. 1. Yuzixi (Qumogong) Culture: Located in Qumogong Grassland, a traditional pasture for local herders. Nearby is Qumu Temple. It is a traditional Tibetan site for stargazing and mountain circumambulation, famous for sunset and stargazing views of the Gongga and Yala snow mountains. ✅Pros: 360° unobstructed viewing platform to see both Gongga and Yala snow mountains; excellent sunset and stargazing experience; vast grassland suitable for camping; wide field of view, great for photography. ❌Cons: High altitude (approx. 4,200m) with a high risk of altitude sickness; some sections of the road up are bumpy; crowded during peak season; snow mountains are completely invisible in bad weather; extremely cold at night; no shops, so bring your own supplies. 2. Gelam Sky City Culture: A viewing spot converted from a local grassland pasture, preserving the Tibetan grassland style while adding trendy installations; it is a modern tourist check-in spot in Western Sichuan. ✅Pros: Excellent view of snow mountains; features trendy props like a lighthouse and carousel, creating a strong atmosphere for photos; slightly less crowded than Yuzixi; good sunset experience; relatively complete facilities. ❌Cons: Some trendy facilities require extra payment; high altitude and very windy; roads are prone to icing in winter; on cloudy days, the snow mountains are not visible, reducing the fun. 3. Moshi Park Culture: Bamei Stone Forest, a geological wonder of mylonite. This land belongs to the ancient Muya Tibetan living area, with many local folk legends about the sacred mountains and stones; it is a physical sample of the geological evolution of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. ✅Pros: Unique black exotic stone forest landscape with strong visual impact; mature scenic area facilities with sightseeing buses; flat boardwalks, making hiking easy; chance to encounter marmots, suitable for photo check-ins. ❌Cons: The landscape type is relatively monotonous, and it may feel boring if you don't like taking photos; extremely strong UV rays; requires purchasing an admission ticket + sightseeing bus ticket; roads are slippery after rain; many tourists during peak season. 4. Tagong Temple (Core cultural site of Tagong Grassland) Culture: "Tagong" in Tibetan means "the place the Bodhisattva likes." It is a thousand-year-old temple of the Sakya sect (Varicolored Sect). Legend has it that when Princess Wencheng entered Tibet, a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha refused to move forward here, so a replica was left behind as the temple's treasure. It is an important pilgrimage site in the Kangba region. Outside the temple is the Muya Golden Pagoda, built to commemorate the 10th Panchen Lama. It features prayer wheel corridors and a pagoda forest, and hosts grand cham dance ceremonies annually, representing the concentrated embodiment of Muya Tibetan faith and culture. ✅Pros: Deep cultural heritage; golden pagoda, prayer flags, grassland, and Yala snow mountain in one frame—a classic Western Sichuan scene; you can walk the pilgrimage path to experience Tibetan pilgrimage; the temple architecture combines Han and Tibetan styles, with rich murals, thangkas, and cultural relics; convenient transportation, located right by the road. ❌Cons: The temple itself is not large, so the visit is short; many pilgrims and tourists on holidays; some private grassland areas charge a cleaning fee; you can only view the Muya Golden Pagoda from the outside, and an admission ticket is required to enter the temple. 5. Muya Grand Temple Culture: The core area of Muya culture, first built in the Yuan Dynasty. It includes a lamasery, a nunnery, a Buddhist academy, and a Tibetan medical school. Kangding Mugecuo Scenic Area

During my trip to Western Sichuan, Kangding was a stop along the way. I chose Mugecuo Lake as a place to get accustomed to the atmosphere. I had visited it 10 years ago, and the service is even better now. Since I entered the park in the afternoon and was short on time, the staff at the shuttle bus rest stop were very helpful. They arranged the boarding process in an orderly manner, explained the sightseeing schedule, and were very attentive during the handover of passengers. Perhaps due to climate change, the red stones on the beach didn't seem as red as they used to be.

Yuzixi

To be honest, if you're just watching the sunset, it's not necessary. I didn't see the stars at night because I was worried about the return trip. The road back is difficult to travel and there are traffic jams. The road is narrow and has gravel. It would be 10 o'clock by the time I got back to Xinduqiao.

Lake Honghaizi

Western Sichuan is never short of beautiful scenery, but Honghaizi in Kangding is a hidden gem, a secluded and healing paradise. This high-altitude lake, also known as Jiagacuo, nestled among the Zheduo Mountains at an altitude of 4200 meters, boasts the purest snow-capped mountain and lake scenery of Western Sichuan. It's sparsely populated, tranquil, and offers an incredibly soothing landscape. Driving from Kangding city, the journey takes about an hour and a half. The road conditions are excellent, and even a regular sedan can easily pass. As you climb the winding mountain road, the view gradually opens up, revealing continuous snow-capped mountains and vast alpine meadows. Every window offers a healing vista, immersing you in a truly serene atmosphere throughout the journey. Upon arriving at Honghaizi, you'll be instantly awestruck by the scenery. On a clear, windless day, the lake's surface is as smooth as a mirror, reflecting the majestic snow-capped mountains in perfect clarity. The mountains and water blend seamlessly, blurring the boundary between heaven and earth—a true mirror of the high-altitude sky. Colorful prayer flags fluttering in the wind along the lake create a distinctly Tibetan atmosphere, a pure and romantic scene reminiscent of Tibet. Here, there's no excessive commercialization or crowds, only snow-capped mountains, lakes, meadows, and gentle breezes. Hike along the lakeside trails, stroll leisurely, escape the city's hustle and bustle, and immerse yourself in the vastness and tranquility of the plateau. You might even encounter leisurely yaks; the pristine mountain scenery is captivating, every corner offering a unique ambiance, perfect for capturing stunning photos. Travel Tips: Temperatures vary greatly at high altitudes, so be sure to bring a thick coat, sunglasses, and sunscreen; remember to slow down and avoid strenuous activity to prevent altitude sickness; signal strength is weak in some sections, so downloading offline maps beforehand is recommended. No need to chase crowds, Honghaizi is enough—immerse yourself in the purest and most healing mountain romance of western Sichuan. Moon Lake

After exiting the tunnel from the national highway, turn right immediately and enter the rural road. It takes about 1 hour to reach the Lotus Sea National Forest Park. The parking place is Moon Lake. It is recommended to arrive before 5 pm, play along the lake, and return to the homestay in Lotus Village (6 kilometers) at night (good conditions). The next morning, enter the deep meadow of Moon Lake again to shoot. The light is best at around 9 am. At around 11 o'clock, take the van arranged by the scenic area (160 yuan/person) to enter the Lotus Lake. It takes 40 minutes to drive on the bad road. After arriving at the hot spring slope, you can only walk up the mountain for about 20 minutes to reach the Lotus Lake. Remember to make an appointment with the driver to wait at the hot spring slope before 3 o'clock, so that there is enough time to return to the scenic area and drive to Zimei Pass or Lisuohai to watch the sunrise Golden Mountain (Lenggacuo is not enough time)

Tagong Grassland

On my trip to western Sichuan, as we drove to the Tagong Grassland, an endless expanse of green stretched out in the distance. The sky was low, the clouds like giant cotton candy hanging overhead, and Mount Yala, a dazzling white peak, marked the edge of the grassland. The wind was strong, making the prayer flags flutter loudly. I crouched down and touched the grass; my fingertips were damp with morning dew from the high plateau. A Tibetan woman led a horse over, asking if I wanted to ride. I shook my head and stood there for a long time, thinking nothing. The grassland was truly vast, so vast that it smoothed out all one's worries. After returning, whenever I felt down, I would pull out that photo. Some places, once is enough, but they remain in your memory for a long time.

Lenggacuo Lake

Lenggacuo is a good place to see Gongga. However, you need to hike up and down the mountain. It is not far away. People with plateau hiking experience do not need to ride horses. They can hike up the mountain, which can save 200 yuan. Lenggacuo is recommended for seeing the reflection of Gongga in good weather. If the weather is bad, you don't need to go up.
