No one told me the view from the lookout in Seda was this incredible

📸 [Best "God-tier" Photo Spot: Fire Lookout Tower] Highly recommended! This platform offers the highest and most expansive view with zero obstructions. You can get a complete, panoramic view of the entire Seda red house complex, and the whole path up is great for photos! ❌ Pro tip: Avoid shooting in the morning The morning light is completely backlit! Whether you're shooting panoramas or portraits, everything comes out dark and gray—this set of mine was taken in the morning! Just trying to save you the trouble 😂 ✅ Best time to shoot: Evening & Night After 4:00 PM, the light is soft. After dark, the red houses across the mountains are dotted with starlight. It's quiet and breathtaking—this is Seda at its most beautiful! 🚌 Life-saving tip for getting down the mountain if you're running late The visit to the Buddhist Academy is limited to 60 minutes, and it's easy to miss the shuttle bus at the distribution center while taking photos! Don't panic, and don't walk the long way! Just take the internal scenic area bus to the last stop; getting off there puts you super close to the exit. I've tested this myself, and it works! Another method is to try and catch a shuttle from a different time slot, but you have to wait until everyone with a reservation for that slot has boarded. If there are empty seats, they'll let you fill in, and the bus leaves once it's full.

For the National Day holiday in Western Sichuan, I suggest focusing entirely on Garzê (itinerary included

· This is the busiest and most congested time of the year. Besides traveling off-peak, route planning is key. By "Garzê," I don't just mean the county seat, but the entire Garzê Prefecture. Its main features can be summarized as: snow-capped mountains + grasslands + river valleys + forests + lakes + Tibetan culture. And it's not a "sightseeing destination" type of place. Recommended route: G317 + Ganbai Road + Genyen (optional) 1️⃣ Avoid crowded commercial scenic spots 2️⃣ Travel a bit further ahead or behind the peak times to avoid the crowds 3️⃣ Besides the iconic snow-capped mountains and alpine lakes of Western Sichuan, you can add cultural sites like Yarchen Gar, Zhuqing Monastery, and Derge Parkhang. Visit Katok Monastery and avoid Seda 4️⃣ Photography-friendly; a wide-angle and a telephoto lens are enough. The snow-capped mountain scenery is all along the way 5️⃣ All are free attractions; no tickets or reservations required 6️⃣ If you have enough time, add Genyen (hotels are expensive during peak season) 🗺️ D1. Chengdu - Luding - Danba D2. Zhonglu Tibetan Village - Dangling - Dandao Secret Realm - Dorje Yuchong Snow Mountain - Yuke Grassland - Luhuo D3. Kasa Lake - Garzê County - Yarchen Gar - Lalong Lake - Ganbai Road - Baiyu D4. Baiyu - Katok Monastery - Xinlu Sea (Yulong Lhatso) - Que'ershan Glacier Viewing Platform - Danxia Town - Garzê D5. Garzê - Daofu - Moshi Park - Tagong Town D6. Tagong Grassland - 434 Airport Highway - Chengdu tip🔔: If you only have 5 days, after finishing Garzê on the 4th day, the last day involves 10 hours of pure driving back to Chengdu. It is recommended that 2 people take turns driving. Sharing an 8/10-day route; if you get stuck in traffic, come find me D1. Chengdu - Zhonglu D2. Dangling - Dandao Secret Realm - Yuke Grassland/Daofu County D3. Kasa Lake - Luori Campsite - Garzê County D4. Baili Barley Gallery - Danxia Town - Cuotong Cuihu Lake - Manigange D5. Dangzhen Lake - Zhuqing Monastery - Derge D6. Baiyu - Ronggai Township - Yarchen Gar - Changtai Grassland - Lalong Lake - Zhuodala Mountain - Garzê County D7. Luhuo County - Gunong Village - Balang Shengdu Starry Sky Campsite - Tagong Town D8. Muya Grand Temple - Provincial Highway 434 - Honghaizi - Chengdu · Or add 2 more days for Genyen to complete the loop ⚠️ Note 1. Recently, the mountain passes near Jiagenba for viewing Gongga and Yala Snow Mountains have been closed. Don't make the trip for nothing 2. The road to Guanyinqiao is under construction; it will be very tight if you drive there from Chengdu on the same day 3. This route is also suitable for autumn in Western Sichuan in November 4. There are many geological hazards in mountainous areas; check local disaster forecasts

Traffic-free Western Sichuan route for the National Day holiday (niche! — traveler post in Sertar

Traffic-free Western Sichuan route for the National Day holiday (niche!

After three trips to Sichuan, I've really mastered the routes. Because I've already been to Seda, Mount Siguniang, and Jiuzhaigou, last National Day, my friends and I chose Daocheng Yading as our destination. It's a hard-earned vacation, and I was really afraid of getting stuck in traffic (working folks will understand). Considering flight prices, we chose to travel off-peak (Oct 2). This is also an idea for friends planning to go to Western Sichuan this National Day. (Route map is on P14) Oct 2: Ya'an After arriving at Tianfu the night before, knowing that the army of Chengdu-registered vehicles would be on the move between 7–8 AM (you can also check real-time future travel times on Amap), instead of driving an hour back to the city center, we chose to head straight to Ya'an to rest. Oct 3: Mianning – Jiulong County (Wuxu Lake) Here's the key point: everyone chooses to take the 318 National Highway, but in reality, the most beautiful scenery of the 318 is in the latter half. So, we chose to take the 248 National Highway to enjoy the scenery of the Daliang Mountains. Here, you can check out the same spots featured in "Pegasus 3" and Ding Zhen's "Land of Truth" – Wuxu Lake. It's less crowded and beautiful, with mountains, rivers, and lakes to explore. Oct 4: Wuxu Lake – Tinong Secret Realm – Yajiang We took a short detour to return to the 318 route, having already avoided a congested section. On the way to Xinduqiao, we originally planned to visit the Tinong Secret Realm, but because there were too many cars and it was too late, we didn't make it up the mountain to see Mount Gongga (I recommend going when it's less crowded, as the roads and facilities at these mountain passes aren't fully developed and can't handle high traffic). If you're not going to see Gongga, you can also choose to experience the charming scenery of small bridges and flowing water in Jiagenba. Oct 5: Yajiang – Litang – Shangri-La Town Seeing Ding Zhen after coming out of the tunnel, I knew we had arrived in Litang. Thanks to the "King of Litang" for getting this road built so well. We went to the Litang Monastery (Changqing Chunke'er Temple) at sunset (you can drive up). It's truly photogenic from any angle. Compared to the prayer flags, I feel the hillsides have a wilder, freer vibe. Oct 6: Daocheng Yading No need to say too much about this classic 5A scenic spot. If you have average physical fitness, don't try to do both the long and short trails in one day; I suggest splitting it over two days. If you aren't obsessed with seeing Milk Lake, hiking at the foot of the mountain to enjoy the autumn colors is also beautiful. Oct 7: Daocheng – Litang – Xinduqiao (Travel day) Oct 8: Xinduqiao – Kangding – Chengdu For lunch, we had the same Tibetan meal in Kangding as Li Xian, and also checked out Zheduo Mountain and the Tianquan Service Area. Although it was on the opposite side, there's a tunnel that lets you cross the road, so you can still take a photo with the "Must-Drive in This Lifetime" sign. Since we stopped on our return trip, there were very few people and no lines. Overall, there was basically no traffic. If you aren't heading to Mount Siguniang in Xiaojin County, you can consider this route.

Take my advice: you absolutely must bring a windbreaker to Western Sichuan!!! — traveler post in Sertar

Take my advice: you absolutely must bring a windbreaker to Western Sichuan!!!

I haven't even returned from Western Sichuan yet, but I can't wait to share some heartfelt advice with you all: You can't go to Western Sichuan without a windbreaker. On this road trip, we started from Chengdu and went through Siguniang Mountain, Zhonglu Tibetan Village, Seda, and Genie—all the way to Daocheng (we haven't reached Daocheng yet, but as long as there's no altitude sickness, we're pushing through). I only brought one orange windbreaker. I don't need to tell you how photogenic orange is in Western Sichuan. The snow-capped mountains are white, the meadows are green, and the lakes are blue—when you stand there, that orange is the only focal point in the entire photo. Plus, the weather on the plateau changes in an instant. A rain shower in the afternoon, a gust of wind at the mountain pass—a windbreaker is a lifesaver. But while it's a lifesaver, who doesn't want to take some great photos for their social media? So, my sincere advice: You must bring a windbreaker to Western Sichuan, and a bright color is even better!

My journey to western Sichuan, fulfilling my dream of visiting Seda and Daocheng, was the most healing and breathtaking trip of the year. The entire experience was incredibly fulfilling, and every scene was soothing. — traveler post in Sertar

My journey to western Sichuan, fulfilling my dream of visiting Seda and Daocheng, was the most healing and breathtaking trip of the year. The entire experience was incredibly fulfilling, and every scene was soothing.

My journey to Western Sichuan, fulfilling my dream of visiting Seda and Daocheng, was the most healing and awe-inspiring trip of the year. The entire experience was incredibly fulfilling, every scene soothing and healing, truly living up to all the journeys and expectations! Stripped of the influencer filter, the beauty of Western Sichuan is pure and magnificent, offering both a profound spiritual impact and a gentle, healing embrace of the mountains – a true hidden gem worth making a special trip for. The most moving scenery of this trip was half the serene faith of Seda and half the idyllic mountain paradise of Daocheng. Stepping into the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in Seda, I was instantly overwhelmed by the countless red houses covering the mountains. Layer upon layer of red houses, built against the mountainside, stretched from the foot to the summit. The vibrant, pure crimson, paired with the clear blue sky and soft, flowing white clouds of the plateau, created an exquisitely healing scene. Here, there was no urban hustle and bustle, only prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the distant, serene chanting of sutras, and the pure, devout hearts of the practitioners. Strolling through the mountains, the mind and body unconsciously calm down. All anxiety and inner turmoil are soothed by this pure land, allowing one to truly understand the gentleness and power of faith. Leaving the tranquility of Seda, head to Daocheng Yading, hailed as "the last pure land on the blue planet," for an immersive encounter with the ultimate scenery of the plateau. The scenery changes layer by layer along the way, from vast alpine meadows and blooming wildflower fields to crystal-clear alpine lakes and majestic ancient snow-capped mountains. The landscape changes at every turn, with the healing effect intensifying with each step. The Xiannairi and Yangmaiyong snow mountains are perpetually snow-capped, their peaks rising amidst the sea of clouds, sacred and magnificent. Milk Lake is crystal clear, its waters reflecting the blue sky and snow-capped mountains, pure and untouched by any dust. Luorong Pasture is lush with vegetation; a gentle breeze ripples through the grass, and cattle and sheep graze leisurely, creating a serene and healing scene where every snapshot is a stunning, unfiltered masterpiece. The entire itinerary was thoughtfully and reasonably arranged, with a relaxed yet progressive pace. The gradually increasing route was perfectly suited to the high-altitude environment, greatly alleviating altitude sickness. The driver was familiar with the complex road conditions of western Sichuan, driving smoothly and steadily, patiently explaining the local culture and scenery along the way, and thoughtfully stopping for us to take photos. There were no forced purchases or sales pitches throughout the trip, offering a free and comfortable travel experience that allowed for both deep immersion and ample rest and relaxation. Along the way, we witnessed the humanistic faith of Seda and admired the magnificent mountains and rivers of Daocheng. The beauty of western Sichuan is both grand and gentle. It heals fatigue with snow-capped mountains, cleanses the soul with pristine lands, and soothes restlessness with purity. This journey to western Sichuan was more than just a trip; it was a spiritual journey. Living up to the mountains and seas, living up to our passion, the romance and grandeur of Seda and Daocheng will forever be cherished memories! A Qing Monastery escape guide — traveler post in Sertar

A Qing Monastery escape guide

The most healing hidden gem in western Sichuan has to be A Qing Monastery! Unlike the bustling commercialization of Seda, this is a pure place of spiritual practice. The Changqu River surrounds the entire island, with tens of thousands of crimson huts scattered across the mountains and fields. Morning mist and chanting, sunset in the Buddhist kingdom—the Tibetan atmosphere here is fully immersive. We've compiled a tested route with zero detours, perfect for first-timers to follow exactly. Basic core information (must-have for travel) 1. Location: Acha Town, Baiyu County, Ganzi, Sichuan, about 4,000 meters above sea level 2. Admission: No main entrance fee, free access throughout the area 3. Best time to visit: May–October (June–September optimal), with green grasslands and mild weather. Afternoon light rain creates an exceptional atmosphere. March–April offers snowy red house scenes with fewer visitors for great photos. November–March sees heavy snow closing the mountains for a 100-day retreat period, with some areas closed—visiting is not recommended. 4. Required documents: Apply in advance for the Baiyu County border pass (can be obtained at your registered residence or Kangding Public Security Bureau) 5. Strict prohibitions: Adult men are not allowed on the Nuns’ Island; drones are banned throughout; no photographing nuns’ faces, loud noise, or stepping on prayer flags and ritual instruments 6. Dress code: Simple, solid colors, no exposed skin or short skirts. Respect religious customs and fit the Buddhist atmosphere Transportation & accommodation (not ideal for self-driving) · External transport: Take a direct bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station to Ganzi County (12 hours), then charter a car to A Qing Monastery. It’s recommended to stay overnight in Baiyu County or Acha Town and head up the mountain early the next morning to avoid night driving. · Accommodation tips: The monastery offers basic dormitory-style lodging without private bathrooms and harsh conditions. Ordinary travelers should stay in Baiyu County for better facilities and more comfortable rest. Precise timed routes (two tested itineraries) Route 1: One-day streamlined visit (ideal for beginners or passersby | 6-hour immersive experience) Suitable for tight schedules and first-time visitors who want to see all key spots without rushing or missing anything Best entry time: 9:00 AM 9. 00–10:00 Great Perfection Sutra Hall + prayer wheel corridor (60 minutes) Arrive at the first stop to experience the purest Tibetan spiritual atmosphere. Follow local nuns counterclockwise around the giant prayer wheels, quietly praying and listening to chanting. Immerse yourself slowly in the Buddhist kingdom—this is the best starting point for beginners. 10. 10–11:30 Outer loop of Nuns’ Island (80 minutes) The world’s largest female spiritual community, only viewable from the outside. Overlook the river-surrounded clusters of red huts. The scattered “matchbox” red houses are the iconic sight of A Qing Monastery. Every photo is a healing western Sichuan masterpiece. Remember not to approach or photograph people. 11. 30–12:30 Mountain rest and simple meal (60 minutes) The scenic area only offers basic snacks. Bring your own food and hot water. Slow your pace to adapt to the high altitude and prevent altitude sickness. Avoid strenuous activity. 4:00–6:00 Back mountain panoramic viewing platform (highlight | 120 minutes) The ultimate photo spot at A Qing Monastery! Afternoon soft light is perfect for photos. At sunset, the valley of red houses is bathed in golden light, with distant mountains, rivers, and red huts blending together. Mist drifts quietly, creating a serene and stunning scene. Wait quietly for the sunset to fade and capture the most beautiful light and shadow of the Buddhist kingdom. Finish around 6:00 PM and head down. Route 2: Deep light and shadow photography route (for enthusiasts | full sunrise and sunset experience) Focuses on off-peak times with fewer people and extreme light and shadow effects, unlocking two ultimate atmospheres of A Qing Monastery 7:00 AM sunrise viewing (arrive early at the back mountain viewing platform) Morning mist drifts through the mountains, and gentle sunlight falls on the red houses. The entire Buddhist kingdom feels hazy and sacred. Few visitors mean exclusive panoramic shots, perfect for atmospheric wide shots. 9:00 AM cultural slow walk Visit the sutra hall for morning prayers and spin prayer wheels for blessings. Immerse yourself in the daily spiritual practice and avoid afternoon crowds. 5:00 PM wait for the golden hour sunset The best light and shadow period of the day. The sunset gradually dyes the sky red. The peaceful, healing feeling of the 4,000-meter plateau is fully realized. This is a must-see core scene of A Qing Monastery. Must-know travel tips 1. Altitude protection: At 4,000 meters, slow your pace throughout. No running or jumping. Bring oxygen bottles, cold medicine, and dress warmly. Seda Jinma Grassland

After going through a lot of hardships from Jiuzhi, it took 7 and a half hours to finally reach Seda. Although it is only 378 kilometers, all of them are provincial or county roads, with washboard roads and cannonball roads everywhere. On one side are mountains that may fall rocks at any time, and on the other side are rolling rivers under cliffs. But along the way, the grasslands, mountains, lakes, villages, and temples made us feel that the scenery is on the road again.

Mandala

The huge and magnificent mandala is located on the highest mountain in the Buddhist Academy. The mandala has three floors. Most people circumambulate on the first and second floors. The first floor is a prayer corridor with a circle of prayer wheels. People circle here every day, morning and evening.

Seda Sky Burial Platform

When someone shared photos with me before! I said I wanted to go! And I actually went alone! I saw the sky burial! The Mingjiao school! I caught a groundhog! Although it was smelly! It was really worth the trip.

Dongga Temple

Dongga Monastery is a photographer's paradise in Seda!!! It's a shame it's not more widely known!!! I visited Dongga Monastery this morning. Unfortunately, it was drizzling, overcast, and lacked sunshine. However, I still witnessed its photographic potential. Dongga Monastery is surrounded by ravines, small grasslands, large grasslands, and a winding river. Located halfway up a mountain, it offers excellent views. Morning and evening are both great times for taking photos. I suggest the Seda County Photographers Association take inspiration from Aba County's "Luorinaze Light and Shadow Scenic Area" and promote Dongga Monastery as a photographer's paradise.

Sertar Grassland

Seda Grassland is the most famous natural pasture in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Going north along the Sequ River, there are hundreds of gullies with lush pastures and colorful wild flowers on both sides of the river, and rolling ridges extending east and west. In between, there are black yaks and white sheep flowing like musical notes, and pastoral songs that are sometimes soft and like clouds blown by the wind.

Gesa'er Wenhua Museum

Seda Town is a small town that is not very eye-catching. However, for those who travel independently, it is a good choice for rest and recuperation. You can also visit the "Seda Gesar Cultural Museum". In front of the Agricultural Bank of China in Jinma Square, there are buses that can go to Seda Wuming Buddhist College and Seda Sky Burial Platform. We took the first bus before 9 am. Private carpooling is also available. It is recommended to take the bus to the Buddhist College first. The Sky Burial Platform ceremony will be held from 1 pm to 4 pm. There is also a distance of 4-5 kilometers between Seda Wuming Buddhist College and Seda Sky Burial Platform. It is not easy to wait for the bus for this distance, so we walked.
