Last mid-April, I went cherry blossom viewing in Sendai with my travel buddies. Centered around Sendai, we also visited Shibata Town and Ishinomaki, capturing many beautiful cherry blossom shots. From city parks to riverside thousand-cherry blossom rows, and even seaside cherry blossom hills, spring in Miyagi is more layered than expected. Here’s a three-day cherry blossom route for friends who love to check in at lesser-known cherry blossom spots for some reference. · Day❶ Sendai City Citywalk 🚄 Ueno ➡︎ Sendai Shinkansen about 1.5h 🌸 Tohoku University Second visit to Tohoku University, the campus has many cherry blossoms, and the historic buildings make for great photos. You can also visit 🆓 the museum introducing Lu Xun’s life in Japan. 👣 Walk from Sendai Station 🌸 Nishi Park Sakuraoka Hanami A popular cherry blossom viewing spot in Sendai city, with many cherry trees in the park. During cherry blossom season, there is the "Sakura Matsuri" festival, lively but not crowded. 👣 15-minute walk from Tohoku University, with many cherry blossoms along the way. · Day❷ Ogawara Town to Shibata Town One-Day Tour 🚃 Sendai ➡︎ Funaoka JR Tohoku Main Line about 30min 🌸 Shiroishi Riverbank Hitome Senbonzakura An 8km-long cherry blossom avenue that is unforgettable. Cherry blossoms + train + remaining snow on the Zao mountain range, every snapshot is a “standard answer” for spring. 🌸 Funaoka Castle Ruins Park You can climb up to overlook the entire cherry blossom line. There’s also the classic scene of a small train passing through a cherry blossom tunnel. · Day❸ Ishinomaki One-Day Tour 🚃 Sendai ➡︎ Ishinomaki JR Senseki Tohoku Line about 1h 🎨 Ishinomaki Manga Road & Ishinomori Manga Museum Starting from the JR station to the Ishinomori Manga Museum, stroll along the approximately 1km "Ishinomaki Manga Road." Explore statues of characters and anime Easter eggs from various anime IPs. The Manga Museum details the life and works of manga master Shotaro Ishinomori. 🌸 Hiyoriyama Park One of Miyagi Prefecture’s top cherry blossom spots. When in full bloom, the mountaintop is a sea of pink. In the distance, you can also see the magnificent Pacific Ocean view.

Last spring, I chased the cherry blossoms of my life in a small town near Sendai🌸 · Starting from Sendai, in just over half an hour, you can reach the famous "Cherry Blossom Ceiling," Senbonzakura, where thousands of cherry trees bloom simultaneously along the Shiroishi River. Stretching 8 km, it looks like a pink and white springtime galaxy. ✨ And the best part: there really aren’t many people!! Compared to the crowded cherry blossom spots in Kanto and Kansai, the experience here is simply unbeatable. · 🌸 Recommended route: Funaoka Station ➡︎ Funaoka Castle Ruins Park ➡︎ Shiroishi Riverbank ➡︎ Ōgawara Station 🏯 Climb up Funaoka Castle Ruins Park for a panoramic view of the entire cherry blossom river + the snow-capped Zao Mountain Range — an instant photo masterpiece📸 👣 Stroll along the riverbank, with neatly lined cherry trees on one side and gently flowing water on the other. A breeze blowing through creates a romantic shower of cherry petals. 🚞 Check out the cherry blossom train, a vintage little train weaving through the blossoms. With just a bit of patience, you can capture stunning anime-style Japanese shots. 🍡 Enjoy local snacks During cherry blossom season, many food stalls appear, offering grilled beef tongue, dango, taiyaki, ice cream, making it a truly delightful experience to eat while enjoying the blossoms. · 🚃 Transportation Sendai ➡︎ Funaoka Station/Ōgawara Station via JR Tohoku Main Line, about 30 minutes. From the station, it’s a short walk to the cherry blossom path — very convenient. · 📅 Recommended viewing time Early to mid-April each year (varies slightly with temperature). The full bloom period is very short, so it’s best to check the bloom forecast in advance! Photo taken: April 17, 2025 · 📷 Photo tips ✅ Soft light in the morning or evening ✅ Wear light-colored clothes for better photos ✅ Must-shoot composition: riverbank + cherry blossoms + distant mountains

Amidst the drizzle and city lights... this city tells its story more beautifully than you might expect. If you have one night in Sendai, I urge you not to rush back to your accommodation. Instead, take a moment to "walk" and let yourself be immersed in the rhythm of the city under the evening lights. 🏮 Iroha Yokocho: A timeless chapter that remains open We begin at a small alley under the glow of red lanterns. This place feels like time has paused, allowing us to soak in the warmth of tradition before continuing our journey. 🏙️ Sunmall Ichibancho: The light of new beginnings From the narrow alley, we step into a historic street with a large arched roof, "Sunmall," symbolizing the light of city revival after the war. Both sides of the street are lined with Showa-era shops and cozy cafes that operate at a leisurely pace. ✨ Clis Road: A street of smiles and raindrops Next, we move to the bustling Clis Road (Clear & Smile), a street where locals truly live their lives. The polished stone pavement reflects the glow of shop signs on a rainy night, creating a moving painting as people pass by. 🏛️ Marble Road Omachi: Quiet elegance We end at a street paved with marble, blending modernity with warmth. Even as shops begin to turn off their lights, the atmosphere here makes you feel that the city continues to "breathe" at all times. 💡 Trip Insights: · The Route: Start at Iroha Yokocho > Sunmall > Clis Road > Marble Road, ending at Sendai Station · Convenience: This route is covered by an arcade roof, making it comfortable to walk even in rain or snow. · Tip: If you get hungry, before heading back to your accommodation or Sendai Station, don’t forget to recharge with a bowl of hot ramen. "My first night in Sendai didn’t feature grand landmarks. It was just a walk... letting the city tell its own story."

The image that comes to mind for Japanese morning markets is usually rows of stalls selling fresh seafood. But Sendai Asaichi (仙台朝市) has a different charm, because some stalls don't just sell fish; they offer "standing sushi" that you can enjoy right there. It's no wonder that so many YouTubers review this place. The atmosphere is quite different from the big fish markets in other cities – the freshness is evident, with chefs slicing the fish right in front of the stalls, and the authentic way locals stand to eat sushi early in the morning. It's a simple yet powerful culinary experience. As I walked past, seeing the chefs slicing and serving the fish to the people next to me, the aroma and the sight were incredibly tempting. But at that moment, I couldn't because I was under immense time constraints. I had to rush back to check out of my hotel and then immediately check in at the airport. It was a strange feeling; seeing the deliciousness that everyone's reviewing on social media right in front of me, but all I could do was walk past. I could only remember that image and promise myself that next time I'm in Sendai, I'll definitely try it. I'll definitely make time to come back here again. 📍 Sendai Asaichi (仙台朝市) Just a 3-minute walk from Sendai Station. Open Monday–Saturday, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM. #SendaiAsaichi #SendaiMorningMarket #JapanTravel #TripMoments #JapanFoodTrip #MiyagiTravel #MrChoon

Sendai Asaichi (仙台朝市) is a local market nicknamed "The Kitchen of Sendai." Its prime location is just a 5-minute walk from JR Sendai Station, offering a lively and authentic Japanese atmosphere. This market is a hub for delicious food and premium ingredients from Miyagi Prefecture, making it a must-visit spot for anyone coming to the city. 🛒 In this small alley, over 70 shops are packed, ensuring a delightful stroll. The main products focus on fresh, local goods: · Seafood: Freshly caught from the port, including fish, shrimp, shellfish, and crabs. Seafood lovers will be thrilled. · Fruits and vegetables: Seasonal produce from Miyagi's farms, fresh, crisp, and reasonably priced. · Ready-to-eat food: Highlights include small eateries and street food, such as Kaisendon (sashimi rice bowls), large sushi pieces, and popular snacks like freshly fried croquettes. Although it's called a "morning market," it actually operates from 8 AM onwards: · Advantage: No need to wake up at dawn; you can visit comfortably. · Recommendation: For the best selection and peak atmosphere, visit between late morning and early afternoon. 🌟 This market is perfect for those who want to experience the real lifestyle of Sendai. Whether you're looking for souvenirs, fresh fruits to enjoy at your hotel, or a place for breakfast or lunch, it's convenient and worth it.

Rinnō-ji, Sendai Located in the northern part of Sendai City, Rinnō-ji is a temple of the Sōtō Zen sect, a historical landmark of Sendai. Originally built in the 15th century, it was moved to its current location in the early Edo period under the patronage of the Date family. Rinnō-ji is characterized by its simplicity, reflecting the essence of Zen. The original wooden buildings are free of lavish ornamentation. The centerpiece of the temple is its Zen garden, which utilizes the Japanese gardening technique known as Shakkei (Borrowed Scenery), where the surrounding landscape blends with the temple's interior elements, such as ponds, rocks, and shaded trees, to create an atmosphere conducive to mindfulness. Traces of Time Within the temple grounds are an ancient cemetery from the Edo period, housing important figures, including monks, devotees, and members of the Date family. The tranquil atmosphere under the shade of pine trees and faded wooden plaques serve as reminders of the truth of life. Today, Rinnō-ji remains an important place for Buddhist practice. Sendai residents enjoy meditating and absorbing the tranquility, particularly in the garden's pavilion, designed to allow visitors to experience nature at eye level. #Sendai #Miyagi #JapanTrip #ZenGarden #SotoZen #Rinnoji #MrChoon
