Autumn offbeat small-city trips | 8 comfortable nearby destinations with fewer crowds — traveler post in Taizhou

Autumn offbeat small-city trips | 8 comfortable nearby destinations with fewer crowds

Autumn temperatures are pleasant, making it a great time for short getaways. I compiled eight small cities with different characters, covering ancient villages, water towns, mountain towns, coastal spots, and wetlands. Avoid the crowded popular attractions and enjoy a relaxed pace—this is a good reference for everyday trips. 📍Shexian Overview: A typical Huizhou-style ancient village surrounded by mountains. In autumn, you can see traditional drying scenes on the eaves, and thin morning mist often lingers in the hills, creating a quiet, natural setting. Highlights: Tachuan, Chengkan, Yuliang dam Getting there: Take high-speed rail to Huangshan North station, then transfer to a bus or chartered car. Villages are far apart, so driving gives more flexibility. Local specialties: Huizhou rice cake, bamboo-shoot-wrapped pork, Huangshan sesame cake Travel tips: Mountain roads are often slippery in the early morning—wear non-slip shoes. Dining near attractions can be pricey; consider eating on the county's old street first. Suggested duration: 2 days When to go & crowd tips: Weekdays have fewer visitors, making it easier to calmly enjoy the village autumn scenery and local character. 📍Linhai Overview: A laid-back ancient city in eastern Zhejiang. The old streets retain local daily life, and the countryside's autumn colors are soft—ancient walls with autumn light make it great for strolling. Highlights: Ziyang ancient street, Taozhu ancient city, Linghu Getting there: High-speed rail arrives directly at Linhai station. City sights are walkable; for outlying attractions, renting a car is recommended. Local specialties: seaweed cake, wheat shrimp, egg-white lamb tail Travel tips: The ancient city can be crowded during holidays and feel noisy; buy street snacks as needed. Suggested duration: 2 days When to go & crowd tips: Travel off-peak to slowly wander the old streets and lake views and soak up the daily atmosphere of the ancient city. 📍Xinghua Overview: A pristine water-town small city. The water forest turns color in autumn, waterways are dense, and the woodland is serene—ideal for relaxed walks. Highlights: Lizhong water forest, Qiandu scenic area, Jindongmen old street Getting there: High-speed rail to Xinghua station. Some attractions offer shuttle buses; driving gives more freedom. Local specialties: lotus root fritters, Shagou fish balls, Xinghua smoked roast Travel tips: Water areas can be windy—bring a light jacket. Expect more insects in the woods. Confirm boat fees in advance. Suggested duration: 2 days When to go & crowd tips: Avoid weekend peaks for a more comfortable experience on woodland trails. 📍Qingzhou Overview: A rustic northern ancient city. Streets and alleys retain the old-town feel, and surrounding hills show rich autumn color layers—the overall vibe is simple and quiet. Highlights: Qingzhou ancient city, Yunmen mountain, Jingtang ancient village Getting there: High-speed rail goes directly to Qingzhou station. City sights are easy to reach by taxi; mountain attractions are better reached by car. Local specialties: Longsheng pastries, Qingzhou griddle cake, mutton soup Travel tips: There are many steps when hiking—wear comfortable flat shoes. Buy specialty pastries from reputable shops. Suggested duration: 3 days When to go & crowd tips: Slow down your itinerary—spend separate times exploring the ancient city and hiking for views without rushing. 📍Xinchang Overview: A Jiangnan mountain-town landscape with widespread Danxia forests. Surrounding rice fields turn golden in autumn and villages are peaceful—great for a short relaxing trip. Highlights: Shijiufeng, Great Buddha temple, Xiayanbei village Getting there: High-speed rail to Xinchang station. Attractions are scattered—charter a car or drive. Local specialties: taro dumplings, fried rice cakes, farmhouse mushroom stew Travel tips: Some mountain trails are steep—take care when walking. Temperatures vary greatly between day and night—bring a jacket. Suggested duration: 2 days When to go & crowd tips: Weekday travel has fewer visitors, letting you better enjoy the mountains and village autumn atmosphere. 📍Rongcheng Overview: A northern coastal small city with a long coastline. Autumn sea breezes are mild, reed beds grow across the tidal flats, and the coastal views are wide open. Highlights: Chengshantou, Yandunjiao, Naxianghai Getting there: High-speed rail to Rongcheng station. Coastal attractions are far apart—driving is best for sightseeing. Local specialties: seafood noodles, Spanish mackerel dumplings, flower-shaped steamed bun Travel tips: Coastal winds can be strong—bring a windproof jacket. Confirm seafood prices before ordering. Suggested duration: 3 days When to go & crowd tips: Avoid holidays for a quieter coastal experience and to slowly enjoy the autumn shoreline. 📍Changshu Overview: A gentle Jiangnan water town where lakeside foliage changes in autumn and woodland tones are soft. The old town moves at an easy pace—perfect for a relaxing holiday. Highlights: Yushan, Shanghu, Shajiabang Getting there: High-speed rail to Changshu station. Attractions are connected by bus; driving is more convenient. Local specialties: mushroom oil noodles, osmanthus chestnuts, beggar's chicken Travel tips: It can be windy by the lake—keep warm. Popular restaurants have long lines at peak times—eat off-peak. Suggested duration: 2 days When to go & crowd tips: Daily visitor levels are moderate—suitable for walking, sightseeing, and relaxation. 📍Panjin Overview: A distinctive wetland city where the red beach turns color widely in autumn. Rivers weave through the wetlands, creating unique landforms. Highlights: Red beach boardwalk, Liaohe wetland park, Dingxiang ecological zone Getting there: High-speed rail to Panjin station. Attractions are far apart—self-driving or carpooling is recommended. Local specialties: river crab tofu, stewed bamboo shoots with meat, homestyle stir-fries Travel tips: Wetlands are exposed with little shade—bring sun protection. Expect big day–night temperature swings—pack an extra layer. Suggested duration: 3 days When to go & crowd tips: Choose clear weather for the best wetland views and a better travel experience. 💬 End note interaction Of these eight autumn small cities, do you prefer the gentle autumn scenery of Jiangnan's ancient villages and water towns, or the wide-open autumn views of northern mountains, seas, and wetlands?

5 chill family-friendly getaways within 1.5 hours of the Yangtze River Delta — traveler post in Taizhou

5 chill family-friendly getaways within 1.5 hours of the Yangtze River Delta

The best photos of kids on trips aren't posed; they're the moments when the child is truly immersed in play. So, when choosing a destination, think backward: where can the child forget about the camera? These 5 spots are all within a 1.5-hour trip, with ready-made photo ops—starting with Tianmu Lake. 1 | Tianmu Lake Tourist Resort (Liyang) | 4 photo spots, snap away in order The first spot is the lakeshore in front of the Shanshui Garden pier. When the boat docks at Longxing Island, the island trail stretches along the waterline. When the side light hits, it creates a bright ribbon on the lake. Have your child stand at a corner of the trail with the water in the background, and you'll get a full-face shot without needing to direct them. The second spot is inside the ground cable car at Nanshan Bamboo Sea. There are 35,000 acres of bamboo here. The car glides deep into the forest, brushing against the treetops, and when it turns, the bamboo tips press against the glass—snap a photo through the window for a completely green frame, capturing your child's profile against the glass. Along the stream-tracing path, there's a 7.77-meter-tall "Fortune Deer" that's visible from far away and is the most photogenic spot in this area. The solid copper "God of Longevity" statue at Longevity Square is draped in red this year, with a scarf stretching a full 199 meters. Stand back and snap the shutter to frame the entire red scarf. The third spot is at the entrance to Jiming Village. The monument marking the intersection of three provinces is right at your feet. Have your child stand with one foot on the monument for a unique photo you can't get anywhere else. The fourth spot is at Wuyue No. 1 Peak, up the aerial cable car. When the clouds lower in the evening, the mountain ridges recede into the distance layer by layer. A backlit silhouette shot is all you need. After taking photos, take care of food and lodging: look for the silver carp in the clay pot fish head soup—the broth should be white when served. Eat the black rice with white sugar, and try the sliced braised liver rolls with rice. In the evening, head to Yushui Hot Spring: 60 pools are scattered throughout the mountains, and on weekends, they stay open until 10:00 PM. The steam rising from the pools against the backdrop of bamboo shadows makes for the last great photo of the day. Of the Shanghai-Nanjing-Hangzhou triangle, the trip from Nanjing is the fastest, taking about 26 minutes to reach Liyang Station, followed by a 15-minute drive. 2 | Hangzhou Safari Park (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) | Photographing animals from the small train The easiest way to see the park is the free forest train. Animals in the drive-through area walk in groups right by the train, and the moment your child looks out through the railing is the best time to snap a photo. The park is flat, so strollers are easy to use. You can also drive your own car into the park for a different perspective. It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao to Fuyang Station, which is over 20 kilometers away. There is a free shuttle from the Wild Animal Park East Station on Metro Line 6. Admission is free for children under 1.2 meters, but reservations are required during peak season. 3 | Taizhou Qin Lake National Wetland Park (Taizhou, Jiangsu) | Reeds and boats on the water Autumn and winter are the seasons for migratory birds and reeds at Qin Lake. Take a large boat into the waterways; the reed flowers on both sides are white, making for great backlit silhouettes. After getting off the boat, there's a Milu deer park. When your child feeds the deer, you can capture their hand and the deer's antlers in the same frame. There are no steps in the park, so strollers are fine, and sightseeing cars are available. The boats have a last departure time, so don't plan new activities after 3:30 PM. It takes 1 hour and 54 minutes from Shanghai to Jiangyan, followed by a 20-minute taxi ride. 4 | Nantong Langshan (Nantong, Jiangsu) | The river view from the mountaintop The mountain isn't high—106 meters—and there's a cable car, though walking up is also easy. Standing at the top and looking south, the Yangtze River unfolds before you. The golden river surface at sunset makes for the most expansive photo of the trip. The steps from the foot to the top of the mountain are gentle, but strollers aren't very convenient, so use a baby carrier for small children. October is peak season for tickets, and prices drop in November when it becomes the off-season. It takes just over an hour from Shanghai to Nantong West. 5 | Shanghai Sheshan + Moon Lake Sculpture Park (Songjiang, Shanghai) | Lawns and straw installations Moon Lake has large lawns and a waterfront beach. The autumn straw installations and pumpkin themes change every year. When children crawl in to play, adults can stand back and snap photos, making composition easy. Ticket checks stop at 4:30 PM, so don't arrive right at the deadline. It's a 20-minute drive from Songjiang Station, and you can also reach West Sheshan via Sheshan Station on Metro Line 9. Tickets for the two locations are separate, so purchase as needed. Keep these tips in mind before taking photos 1. Don't try to photograph people and scenery at the same time; it's smoother to shoot scenery in the morning and people in the afternoon 2. Cable cars, ropeways, and boats close early, so check the last departure times first 3. It's windy in the reed marshes and by the lake, so make sure children's hats and jackets have strings or are secured 4. You don't need a flash for backlit silhouettes; just stand in the light and shoot toward the dark 5. There are many mosquitoes in wetlands and forests, so keep insect repellent handy 6. Buy attraction tickets online to save time for taking photos Confirm ticket prices and opening/closing times one day in advance.

Avoid the crowds! 4 hidden slow-living paradises in Jiangsu to head to this weekend — traveler post in Taizhou

Avoid the crowds! 4 hidden slow-living paradises in Jiangsu to head to this weekend

Tired of the crowded, internet-famous ancient towns during holidays? Don't want to rush, wait in lines, or just want to find a quiet little town to zone out and get some fresh air! We've curated 4 truly off-the-beaten-path, uncrowded, and charmingly authentic hidden gems in Jiangsu. Reachable in as little as 1 hour by high-speed rail, these towns offer a soothing, slow pace perfect for a weekend escape, a short getaway, or a relaxing family trip✨ ① Taicang | The closest "blank canvas" Jiangnan town to Shanghai Taicang is truly an underrated Jiangnan treasure! Despite being right next to Shanghai, it completely lacks the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. The whole town is clean, gentle, and relaxed—the most comfortable slow-living town in Jiangnan. No need to rush to check off sights; just wandering around is a scenic experience. Liuhe Ancient Town is one of the few quiet, ancient ports in Jiangnan. The old street is short, with rivers winding through alleys and ancient bridges standing still. Without dense rows of shops, it retains the simplest look of old Jiangnan, where elderly residents sit at the alley entrance chatting, and time flows slowly. Be sure to visit Yanshan Garden in Taicang in the evening. As a classic Jiangnan garden, it is quiet and uncrowded, with pavilions, waterside structures, and reflections in the pond. As the evening breeze blows, the garden's atmosphere is fully realized—quiet and soothing, perfect for a relaxing stroll. Taicang in late autumn is breathtaking, with the whole city covered in golden ginkgo leaves, clean and tidy streets, and every snapshot capturing the soothing scenery of a small town. The food is also low-key and amazing! The soft and sweet Taicang pork floss bones and the "three fresh" dishes from the river and sea are light, delicious, and non-greasy. They are addictive and are the home-style delicacies kept secret by the locals. ✅Travel experience: Clean and soothing, zero commercialization, suitable for short-term relaxation and easy family trips ② Jurong | A little fairyland right on Jiangsu's doorstep Many people only know Mount Mao, but they don't know that the entire city of Jurong is a treasure! Hidden among the mountains, with dense forests and fresh air, it is full of ethereal mountain and water scenery—a super niche, oxygen-rich getaway in the Yangtze River Delta. The top choice is Baohuashan Qianhua Ancient Village! Unlike the dilapidated state of other ancient towns, this is a Ming and Qing dynasty village nestled in the mountains and waters. Built against the mountain with streams running through the alleys, the bluestone roads are clean and tidy, and the white walls and black tiles are arranged in a picturesque way. During the day, the mountain forests are quiet, the ancient alleys are serene, and the lush greenery is soothing. At night, lanterns light up one by one, the ancient village glows in the dim light, and the evening breeze blows through the alleys, creating an ethereal atmosphere that is simply divine. With very few tourists, you can enjoy the entire Jiangnan night view all to yourself. If you don't want to hike or rush, come to Jurong's Fure Flower Sea. Flowers bloom in rotation throughout the four seasons, and with vast lawns and fresh air, it's perfect for picnics, taking photos, and walking the kids. Lying on the grass watching the blue sky and white clouds will cure all your urban anxiety. ✅Travel experience: Ethereal mountain and water scenery, uncrowded and beautiful, away from the hustle and bustle, a top choice for healing and stress relief ③ Danyang | A thousand-year-old Jiangnan town overshadowed by its eyewear industry Mention Danyang, and everyone only thinks of eyewear, but they don't know that it hides the gentlest Jiangnan water town! Without crowds of tourists, locals live and work in peace. The old streets, ancient bridges, and river and lake scenery are low-key yet stunning. You must visit the Jiuli Scenic Area; it's so niche that there's almost no one there! The river water is crystal clear, ancient stone bridges span the river, the banks are shaded by trees, and the ancient architecture is simple and elegant. This is a thousand-year-old ancient ferry crossing, quiet and pristine. The wind blows across the shimmering water, which is incredibly soothing. The Ximen Old Street in the old town is full of vibrant local life. It retains the complete style of the old southern city, with old-fashioned shops, vintage storefronts, and old houses in the alleys. It hasn't been renovated into an internet-famous spot, offering an authentic taste of old Jiangnan life. Danyang's food is also exceptional! Danyang barley porridge, Yaorou (cured pork), and pufferfish feasts are specialties that locals have eaten for generations. They are light, easy on the stomach, and full of authentic local flavor. ✅Travel experience: Niche and off-the-beaten-path, pristine, rich in local atmosphere, suitable for those who love quiet old towns ④ Jingjiang | A gentle Jiangnan-style town in northern Jiangsu with soft river breezes Jingjiang is truly too low-key! Living by the river with vast river views, it has no crowded throngs of people. The local customs are gentle, the town is peaceful, and it is a soothing, niche destination hidden by the river. You must go to Mucheng Park! It's a super large riverside ecological park with a vast river surface, swaying reeds, and gentle river breezes. Stroll along the riverside walkway, watch the river flow east and the sunset over the river—the view is incredibly open, soothing, and relaxing. The park has forests and vast lawns, and it's quiet and uncrowded, perfect for walking, cycling, camping, and watching the sunset. The pace in the old town is slow, the streets and alleys are clean and tidy, and there is no commercial noise. The small shops along the street are full of vibrant local life, and the small-town life is relaxed and comfortable. You must try the authentic delicacies when coming to Jingjiang! Jingjiang crab roe soup dumplings, pork jerky, and river fish stir-fries—with thin skins and juicy fillings, they are sweet, savory, and flavorful. It's a small-town taste you won't forget after visiting. ✅Travel experience: Soothing river views, relaxed and comfortable, uncrowded and quiet, suitable for a weekend of relaxing and slow travel Overall Summary | Why recommend these 4 small towns? No internet-famous crowds, no over-commercialization. They have mountains, water, ancient towns, gardens, river views, and vibrant local life. Reachable in 1 hour by high-speed rail, no need for long-distance travel. A two-day, one-night weekend trip is enough to escape urban anxiety and immerse yourself in the gentleness of Jiangnan🌿

I thought there were no good hotels in Xianyou, but I was proven wrong. — traveler post in Taizhou

I thought there were no good hotels in Xianyou, but I was proven wrong.

I was on a three-day business trip in Xianyou and had to try two other places before settling on this Jingjiang Boutique Hotel (Xianyou High-Speed Railway Station Branch). Honestly, I didn't have high expectations; I just hoped for a clean hotel in a small town. To my surprise, it was renovated in 2024. The environment is simple and elegant, and they even have robot delivery service. It's great to enjoy such quality for a reasonable price. The room is spacious, bright, and clean. The mattress is truly soft—once I lay down, I didn't want to move. The bathroom has a separate wet and dry area, so I finally don't have to step on a wet floor with bare feet. The suite even has a tea area. Brewing a pot of tea and zoning out alone at night, the fatigue from my business trip vanished instantly. The family room even has a children's tent prepared for families—so thoughtful. I didn't have to worry about food at all. The hotel offers breakfast, and a food street is just a few minutes' walk away, featuring local snacks like Xianyou bianshi and Xinghua rice noodles. I ate at the Mingdu Restaurant next door twice. Locals were actually queuing up, so it's not a tourist trap. ⭐Amenities: Free parking, washing machines, and a gym are available, so I didn't have to save up my laundry to take home after a few days of business travel. It's very close to the high-speed railway station, making overnight layovers very convenient. 🚕Nearby attractions: ✅Walking distance: Fengting Food Street, where you can find local snacks like Xinghua rice noodles, Xianyou bianshi, and Fengting cake all in one place. ✅30-min drive: Putian Arts and Crafts City to see traditional crafts like wood carving, stone carving, and gold and silver jewelry. ✅Within 1-hour drive: Jiuli Lake to see waterfalls, Caixi Rock for hiking, a day trip to Meizhou Island (the holy land of Mazu), praying at Nanshan Guanghua Temple, and hiking at Shigu Jie. Xianyou is more than just a transit stop. Choosing a good hotel to stay and explore at a leisurely pace is actually very comfortable.

Lizhong Water Forest Scenic Spot

I saw a CCTV recommendation many years ago. Although there's a water forest in Qingpu, Shanghai, this place offers a more immersive experience with a boat tour. In early November, the cedar trees hadn't turned red yet, but it still had its own seasonal beauty.

Qin Lake Tourist Attraction

I took advantage of the weekend break and drove with friends to Zhenhu Lake in Taizhou to relax. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and breathing in the fresh air, I felt much more relaxed. I even saw some Père David's deer up close. I think this trip was really great!

Qianduo Scenic Area

The rapeseed flowers are especially spectacular when they bloom, and there are many photo spots set up. However, the ladies on the tour boats seem to be trying to earn tips, which is a bit shady. I hope the scenic area will strengthen its management.

Taizhou Navel Vessel Cultural Park

As a descendant of a veteran naval officer, I feel extremely honored to be able to visit and see my country's first-generation replenishment ship and destroyer. I also forwarded the photos to the veteran, who expressed great satisfaction.

Qintong Ancient Town

The ancient town is very old, with ancient camellia and banyan trees. My child, just over 1.4 meters tall and wearing sneakers, was charged at some attractions, but was allowed to pass through Zhenhu Lake without paying. Another unique feature of Taizhou is its paid parking; street parking is also quite expensive, especially during holidays.

Fengcheng River Scenic Area

Meiyuan Garden, located on the banks of the Fengcheng River on the east side of Taizhou's old city, is a garden commemorating Mei Lanfang. It attracts many tourists during holidays and is one of Taizhou's most visited attractions. Transportation is convenient, with multiple bus lines nearby. The Taizhou Old Street commercial area is directly opposite, offering plenty of food and drinks. There is a parking lot at the entrance, but spaces are limited and are usually full of tour buses during holidays.

Wanghai Tower, Fengcheng River

The night view of Fengcheng River is really great. There are opera performances on the shore from time to time, which inherit the artistic culture of Master Mei Lanfang. It is also very pleasant to walk around Taoyuan next to the old street at night.

Taizhou Old Street

Taizhou Old Street is so charming! Once you enter, the bluestone pavement and antique buildings instantly take you back to the old days. There are a wide variety of street snacks, such as stinky dried tofu and fish noodle soup. There are also various specialty shops where you can find a lot of treasures. When the lanterns are lit at night, the atmosphere is immediately full, I love it!
