Shennongjia | Encounter an Autumn Secret Realm at the Roof of Central China at 30° North Latitude

📍 Hidden Gem Files · Address: Shennongjia Forest District, Hubei Province, the only administrative region in China named after "Forest District" · Altitude: Shennongding 3106 meters, Dajiuhu approximately 1700 meters · Forest Coverage: Over 91% · Reputation: Roof of Central China, World Natural Heritage Site, World Geopark · Character: Primeval forests, alpine wetlands, sea of clouds and morning mist, autumn colors in the forests 📅 When is the best time to go? Best time to view autumn colors: Mid-October to early November. The core scenic areas such as Shennongding, Dajiuhu, Tianyan, and Hongping Gallery are at their most vibrant, with seas of clouds, morning mist, and colorful forests creating a golden opportunity for photography. The autumn viewing period can last until mid-to-late November. Autumn colors unfold gradually, starting high and then gradually decreasing, allowing you to follow the red leaves according to altitude: · 🍁 Late September: Shennongding and the Lookout Tower, at altitudes above 2500 meters, are the first to turn red, making them the earliest places in Hubei to experience autumn. · 🍁 Early October: Banbiyan and Taiziya, at altitudes of 1500–2500 meters, undergo extensive color changes, with forests ablaze in vibrant hues. · 🍁 Mid-October: Tianyan Scenic Area and Hongping Gallery, at altitudes of 800–1500 meters, reach their peak viewing period, with mountainsides ablaze in red. · 🍁 Late October–Early November: Dajiuhu and the area around Muyu Town enter the late autumn twilight, with morning mist and red leaves a limited-time autumn spectacle. 🚗 How to get there? 🚄 High-speed rail (most convenient): Take the high-speed rail to Xingshan Station (closest to Muyu Town), then transfer to a tourist bus or shared ride for about 1 hour to Muyu Town. Shennongjia High-speed Rail Station is now open, connecting several major cities including Wuhan, Xi'an, Zhengzhou, and Xiangyang. There is a shuttle bus stop in front of the station square. 🚗 Driving (most flexible): Navigate to "Muyu Town". Approximately 5 hours from Wuhan, and 3 hours from Yichang. The mountain roads are winding; prepare motion sickness medication. At Shennongding, you need to transfer to an eco-friendly bus; at Dajiuhu, you need to transfer to a bus and a lakeside train. These two transportation options require separate tickets. 🎫 How to buy tickets? We recommend purchasing a combined ticket for six scenic areas (Shennongding, Dajiuhu, Tianshengqiao, Shennongtan, Guanmenshan, and Tianyan). In autumn, climb the observation tower for panoramic views of rolling hills covered in colorful forests and clouds drifting through the valleys. 1. **Shennong Valley:** Witness the rolling sea of clouds; **Banbi Rock:** Explore the mysterious rock formations of Banbi Rock; **Golden Monkey Ridge:** Traverse the primeval forest of Bashan fir trees, where centuries-old fir trunks are covered in moss, and the gentle wooden boardwalk is incredibly easy to walk on. **Xiaolongtan:** There's also a wild golden monkey rescue point where you can observe them up close. 2. **Dajiu Lake (Alpine Wetland, Enchanted by Morning Mist):** Located at an altitude of 1700 meters, this alpine wetland is breathtaking. In autumn, morning mist blankets the lake, reflecting the golden meadows in the clear water, creating a fairytale-like scene. Best way to experience it: Arrive before 6:30 AM to see the mirror-like surface of the lake shrouded in mist. Take the lakeside train to visit lakes 2-5 in sequence. At the deer park, you can feed the sika deer. The wetland, distant mountains, and deer create a scene reminiscent of an oil painting. 3. **Natural Bridge + Shennongtan + Guanmenshan (Cultural and Leisure Route):** These three attractions are adjacent to each other, easily covered in half a day. Natural Bridge Canyon Waterfall, gentle wooden boardwalk, waterfall cascading over a natural stone bridge, autumn maple leaves and moss-covered stone walls create a picturesque scene. Shennongtan features a 21-meter-tall Shennong statue and a thousand-year-old fir king, perfect for photos and prayers. Guanmenshan offers views of giant pandas, cliffside beehives, and a geological exhibition hall, making it a top choice for families. 4. 🌈 Tianyan Scenic Area · Rainbow Bridge (Autumn Scenery Ceiling) – Best time to visit: Mid-October. The red leaves of Yanziya paired with the Rainbow Bridge offer a stunning drone view, with a vibrant sea of colorful forests below, earning it the title of the pinnacle of Shennongjia's autumn scenery. 5. 🖼️ Hongping Gallery (Self-Driving Highlight) – A deep canyon, autumn leaves adorning the rock walls, every step a picturesque scene, a self-driving journey offering ever-changing views. 🗺️ 3 Days 2 Nights Classic Loop (No Backtracking) · Day 1: Entering the Forest - Cultural and Leisure Route: Arrive at Muyu Town → Natural Bridge (Canyon Waterfall + Ba People's Ancient Village) → Shennong Altar (Shennong Statue + Millennium Fir King) → Guanmen Mountain (Panda Pavilion + Geological Exhibition Hall) → Overnight in Muyu Town, dinner: Braised Pork Trotters Hot Pot · Day 2: Ascending the Roof of Central China - Shennong Peak (Full Day): Depart early at Shennong Peak → See golden monkeys at Xiaolongtan → Walk through the primeval fir forest at Jinhouling → Watch the sea of clouds at Shennong Valley → Explore the strange rock formations at Banbiyan → Overlook the forest from the observation tower → Overnight in Pingqian Ancient Town · Day 3: Morning Mist at Dajiu Lake - Return Trip: Arrive at Dajiu Lake before 6:30 AM → Take the mini-train to chase the morning mist on the lake → Visit Lakes 2-5 in sequence, feed the sika deer at the Deer Park → If time permits, visit Tianyan Rainbow Bridge along the way → Return Trip 🍜 What to Eat? 🥇 Braised Pork Trotters Hot Pot – Shennongjia's number one specialty. The mountain-grown cured pork trotters are stewed until tender and fall off the bone, then cooked with high-altitude potatoes. The broth is rich and the meat is fragrant; it's a must-order at every table in Muyu Town. 🥘 Rock Ear and Free-Range Chicken Soup – Rock ear is a specialty of the forest area. Stewed with free-range chicken, the soup is fresh and nourishing. A bowl after a hike in autumn will warm you up completely. 🐟 Cold-Water Fish Hot Pot – The cold-water fish from the mountains has tender flesh. Whether stewed or in a sour soup, it's sweet and delicious, a taste that locals have enjoyed since childhood. 🥔 Roasted Potatoes + Wild Vegetable Cakes – A farmhouse snack, fragrant and delicious, perfect for snacking while strolling around. Where to Eat: Muyu Town's food street has the most restaurants. Local wild vegetables are the top choice in the town. Cold-water fish stew with tofu, stir-fried wild bamboo shoots with cured pork, and wild vegetable cakes are all worth trying. 🏨 Where to Stay? · Muyu Town (Base Camp): The scenic area's distribution center, with supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants. It's close to all scenic spots by car, offers many affordable guesthouses, and is the most convenient place for travel and dining. · Pingqian Ancient Town (Top Choice for Morning Mist Viewing): Located next to the Dajiuhu transfer point, it's convenient for early morning mist photography. Guesthouses are quiet, but dining options are limited. If you want to photograph the Dajiuhu morning mist, you must stay here at least one night. · ⚠️ Avoid: Avoid staying in scattered guesthouses deep in the mountains; facilities are poor, and nighttime travel is inconvenient. Hotels inside the scenic area have high markups. 💡 Practical Tips 1. 🧥 Onion Layering: Temperature differences on the mountain are extreme; daytime temperatures can reach 20℃, but mornings and evenings can drop to 5℃. A light windproof jacket or light down jacket is essential, and long pants and non-slip hiking shoes are standard. 2. 🌂 Bring a raincoat: Weather can vary greatly in mountainous areas, with frequent showers; a raincoat is more practical than an umbrella. 3. ☀️ Don't skimp on sun protection: High altitude means strong UV radiation; bring SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat. 4. 📱 Download offline maps in advance: Many sections of the mountain roads have no cell phone signal; prepare your navigation before entering the mountains. 5. ⛽ Fill up your gas tank before entering the mountains: There are no gas stations within the scenic area; if driving, be sure to fill up at the foot of the mountain. 6. 🚫 Reject unlicensed guides on the roadside: Do not participate in forced shopping trips or home visits; hike on designated trails; do not enter undeveloped areas; do not feed wild animals. 7. 💊 Prepare motion sickness and altitude sickness medication: The mountain roads have many curves, making motion sickness easy; Shennongding is at an altitude of 3100 meters; for mild altitude sickness, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and avoid strenuous exercise. 8. 📅 The best window is only 2–3 weeks: Mid-October to early November is the peak season for autumn foliage colors. Check the real-time autumn color information before you go. The beauty of Shennongjia is the rolling sea of red leaves below the Shennongding observation tower, the fairyland of mist swirling around Dajiu Lake at 6:30 am, the rustling sound underfoot through the thick layer of fallen leaves in the primeval fir forest of Jinhouling, and the gentle moment when sika deer walk through the dew-covered dew in the deer park. It's not elaborate or noisy, but with its 91% forest coverage and a gradual change from mountaintop to valley, it offers the most vibrant autumn colors of the roof of Central China to those willing to rise early. Choose October and go to Shennongjia to chase autumn colors in this hidden paradise at 30° North latitude. 🍂 📍 Hidden Gem Files · Address: Shennongjia Forest District, Hubei Province, the only administrative region in China named after "Forest District" · Altitude: Shennongding 3106 meters, Dajiuhu approximately 1700 meters · Forest Coverage: Over 91% · Reputation: Roof of Central China, World Natural Heritage Site, World Geopark · Character: Primeval forests, alpine wetlands, sea of clouds and morning mist, autumn colors in the forests 📅 When is the best time to go? I've been to Xiangshan 33 times, and here's my guide to the "sea train" version of a Xiangshan trip. — traveler post in Xiangyang

I've been to Xiangshan 33 times, and here's my guide to the "sea train" version of a Xiangshan trip.

Visit Ningbo during the National Day holiday to check out the new viral sea train in the Yangtze River Delta. A 2-day trip to Xiangshan is absolutely amazing. Arrive in Ningbo by plane ✈️ or high-speed train 🚄, take the subway 🚇 to Xiaoyangjiang, and transfer to Line 12 to Damu Bay. I recommend renting a car after exiting the station; it's the best way to experience the sea train and explore Xiangshan at your own pace. Recommended self-drive route after arriving in Xiangshan ✅ Day 1: Xiangshan Global Studios → Check in at Shipu Shatangwan ✅ Day 2: Sunrise, Dongmen Fishing Village, Changsha Village. ✅ Xiangshan Global Studios: Since you're here, treat yourself. Rent an electric scooter right at the entrance to easily explore all the hidden gem filming locations! Route: Starlight Plaza → Star Forest → Ten-Mile Peach Blossom Forest → Tomb of the Living Dead → Water Curtain Cave → Tang City → Stunt Show → Peach Blossom Palace → Spring and Autumn and Warring States City → Xiangyang City → Watch the molten iron flower show at Tang City Waterfront (night tour) → Xiangyang City Wall Show (night tour) ▫️ Tang City A landmark featured in "Wuyoudu" and "The Longest Day in Chang'an"! Note that it has limited opening hours, so be sure to check the schedule before you go. ▫️ Peace Elite Live-Action Theater An incredibly immersive live performance with stunning visual effects. ▫️ Final stop: Xiangyang City (a must-visit‼️) There are many NPC-style interactions, perfect for completing challenges to win "silver notes" and exchanging them for gifts near the exit. You can also film a short drama; for less than 200 yuan per person, you get a full costume, makeup, and production team, and you'll receive a one-minute short video the next day. ▫️ Mid-Autumn & National Day Exclusive | Tang & Song Dynasty Night Tour Flyboard show + intangible cultural heritage molten iron flower show + the spectacular Xiangyang City Wall performance. ✅ I personally love the small fishing village of Shatangwan. You can go clamming for free at the entrance when the tide is out. Find a homestay with a sunrise view, and you can watch the sunrise without even getting out of bed. It's very close to Shipu and Dongmen Island, so you can spend half a day there on the second day. Have a seafood noodle soup in town for lunch, and if you have time on your way back in the afternoon, you can stop by Changsha Village. No need for a complicated itinerary. Just follow this route to easily unlock a one-stop film-world adventure filled with food, fun, and sightseeing!

Xiangyang Chunqiu Village | Is the truth about Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" at night hidden in this stone village? — traveler post in Xiangyang

Xiangyang Chunqiu Village | Is the truth about Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" at night hidden in this stone village?

The moment I climbed onto the ridge, the wind rushed up from the Maoping River, making it hard to stand steady. Beneath my feet was a stone fortress wall nearly 500 meters long, with over 150 stone houses spread along the spine of Liyu Mountain, like a stone dragon stranded deep in the Jing Mountains. I stood in front of the stone house at the highest point, where only the foundation remained, and the tour guide said, "This is the site of the Chunqiu Pavilion." In 2012, a construction crew dug up a stone foundation block here measuring 4.5 meters long and wide and 60 centimeters thick, just 1 meter away from the ruins of the Guandi Temple stele—archaeological experts confirmed after verification that this is the legendary place where Guan Yu read the "Spring and Autumn Annals" by candlelight. 📜 The truth is hidden in the cracks of the stones: A clash between legend and archaeology The story of Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" at night has been passed down for 1,800 years. Legend has it that when Guan Yu was guarding Jingzhou, he met the Deng brothers, who built a five-story bluestone pavilion for him at the most dangerous part of the mountain fortress. No one was allowed to enter, and every time Guan Yu came, he would sit upright, stroking his beard with his left hand and holding the book with his right, reading by candlelight. That is how the name Chunqiu Pavilion came to be. However, Ye Zhi, a professor at Hubei University of Arts and Science, believes after studying the remaining stele and the Deng family genealogy that Chunqiu Village was actually built by the Deng family during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty to defend against bandits. One ancient village, two timelines—standing in front of the Chunqiu Pavilion site, I suddenly felt that the truth might be hidden between these two accounts: the village may have been built later, but the legend of Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" here has long since grown into the texture of the stones. 🏯 Stone house cluster on the ridge: Walking on the spine of the "No. 1 Village in China" Chunqiu Village is the second-largest ancient mountain fortress in Asia, with over 150 stone houses spread along the ridge from south to north, surrounded by water on three sides and facing the mountain on one. I walked slowly along the ridge plank road; most of the stone houses only have walls left, with no roofs, but the traces of door frames, window openings, and window lattices remain. The narrowest part of the city wall only allows one person to pass sideways. Standing at the battlement and looking out, the Maoping River makes a huge "S" curve at the bottom of the valley. The layout of being surrounded by mountains and water really looks like a natural Tai Chi diagram. Inside the village, there are also ruins such as watchtowers, city gates, general's rooms, and "flying stones from the sky," with a story at every few steps. 🚡 Cable car and Via Ferrata: Two perspectives to see the ancient village I chose the cable car to go up the mountain, which costs 87 yuan for a round trip. It takes 15 minutes to slowly ascend, and the panoramic view of the entire Liyu Mountain ridge and Maoping River unfolds beneath your feet. If you are brave enough, you can experience the Via Ferrata rock climbing, which is 200 meters long with a vertical height of over 70 meters, taking anywhere from 40–100 minutes. When you are climbing against the cliff, the stone walls of Chunqiu Village are right above you. I chose the cable car, and my friend chose the Via Ferrata. When we met up after coming down the mountain, he said, "My legs were shaking so much I couldn't even take a steady photo." 📌 Practical information · Tested and verified 📍Address: Lupi Village, Donggong Town, Nanzhang County, Xiangyang City (navigate to "Chunqiu Village Scenic Area") 🚗Transportation: About 1.5 hours by car from Xiangyang, parking is 10 yuan/day; or take the tourist shuttle bus from the Xiangyang Tourist Distribution Center (departs every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday) 🕒Opening hours: 8:30 AM–5:30 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM) 🎫Admission ticket: General admission is about 65–72 yuan, half price for students/seniors aged 60+; round-trip cable car is 87 yuan, Via Ferrata is 54 yuan, one-way boat ride is about 15 minutes ⏳Recommended duration: 3–4 hours 🗺️ Route recommendation: Cable car up the mountain > Wangyue Terrace for sightseeing > Chunqiu Pavilion site (where Guan Yu read at night) > Guan Gong statue > Walk through the stone house cluster along the ridge plank road > Boat ride down the Maoping River > Ancient Mountain Fortress Culture Museum 🍜 What to eat at the foot of the mountain: There are many farmhouses opposite the scenic area. Nanzhang cured meat, firewood-cooked konjac tofu, and acorn noodles are local specialties. You can eat very well for about 50 yuan per person. Standing on the Chunqiu Pavilion, the wind rushes up from the Maoping River. When Guan Yu read the "Spring and Autumn Annals" here 1,800 years ago, he must have been looking at the same landscape. Whether the truth is real or not may not be that important—what matters is that this stone village has kept that posture for him until today. 🏯

Local beef noodle shops are only open in the morning and are basically closed in the afternoon, so don't make a wasted trip. 5. Dining inside the Tang City scenic area is not cost-effective. City of Tang Dynasty

The ancient city is vast and full of historical atmosphere. It's a pity I didn't go at night and missed the night view. The East Market and West Market were very interesting, with various performances!

Ancient Longzhong

A fantastic scenic spot, combining culture and beautiful scenery. It recreates various historical events. Tenglong Pavilion is beautiful, but climbing up the mountain is a bit tiring. We watched a dramatic performance depicting the Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage, which was very interesting!

Xiangyang Ancient City

The Xiangyang Ancient City Wall is located in Xiangcheng District, Xiangyang City, Hubei Province. Originally built during the Han Dynasty, it underwent several renovations from the Tang to the Qing Dynasties. The wall was initially roughly square, with a perimeter of 7331 meters, a maximum height of 10.84 meters, and a thickness of 11-14 meters. The overall structure includes trapezoidal cross-section walls and arched gates. The city wall has six gates on its four sides, each with a barbican or inner city, and corner towers at the four corners. Along the wall are watchtowers and beacon towers, and over 4000 crenellations are built. A moat surrounds the city, reaching a maximum width of 250 meters and an average width of 180 meters. On June 25, 2001, the Xiangyang Ancient City Wall was designated as a fifth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Speaking of the ancient city of Xiangyang, it inevitably evokes memories of Jin Yong's martial arts novels for a generation. The legendary stories of the heroes Guo Jing and Huang Rong defending the city and Yang Guo losing his arm all took place here. It was also a place where Yue Fei's army once fought.

This time, I brought my child to Fun Childhood and had a great experience! The park is large and divided into indoor and outdoor areas. On a hot day, we could first relax in the Super Wings Exploration Base, where the temperature-controlled room kept us from getting sunburned. The energy bar obstacle course, the bouncy castle, and the cave exploration were full of fun.

Overall, the scenic area is rich in content, with good cultural and natural landscapes. You can see the thousand-year-old mountain village and the mountain village museum, take the cableway, slide and cruise, ride horses, pick fruits, drink tea, and walk via ferrata. The mountain is not very high, so it is not tiring to climb. There are also special performances and robot interactions during the festival, and parking is free.

Xiangyang Museum (New Building)

Family, does anyone know anything about this?! The Xiangyang Museum truly amazed me! I initially thought this kind of niche museum would be ordinary, but I was blown away the moment I stepped inside! The general history exhibition here is incredibly comprehensive, covering everything from ancient times to modern times with a crystal-clear historical timeline. The exhibition layout is also incredibly thoughtful; the lighting is just right—not too bright, not too dim. Many artifacts of similar categories are neatly arranged in display cases, making it look incredibly organized and a very comfortable place to browse! I especially love this way of categorizing and displaying artifacts. You can immediately tell the age and type of an artifact, which is so helpful for a history novice like me! And there weren't many people, so I could take my time looking at everything without worrying about being crowded. Overall, it was a fantastic experience! If you also enjoy history and culture, and appreciate in-depth travel and cultural experiences, then the Xiangyang Museum is definitely worth a visit! Trust me, you will be amazed by the artifacts and displays!
