Xiangyang Chunqiu Village | Is the truth about Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" at night hidden in this stone village? — traveler post in Jingzhou

Xiangyang Chunqiu Village | Is the truth about Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" at night hidden in this stone village?

The moment I climbed onto the ridge, the wind rushed up from the Maoping River, making it hard to stand steady. Beneath my feet was a stone fortress wall nearly 500 meters long, with over 150 stone houses spread along the spine of Liyu Mountain, like a stone dragon stranded deep in the Jing Mountains. I stood in front of the stone house at the highest point, where only the foundation remained, and the tour guide said, "This is the site of the Chunqiu Pavilion." In 2012, a construction crew dug up a stone foundation block here measuring 4.5 meters long and wide and 60 centimeters thick, just 1 meter away from the ruins of the Guandi Temple stele—archaeological experts confirmed after verification that this is the legendary place where Guan Yu read the "Spring and Autumn Annals" by candlelight. 📜 The truth is hidden in the cracks of the stones: A clash between legend and archaeology The story of Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" at night has been passed down for 1,800 years. Legend has it that when Guan Yu was guarding Jingzhou, he met the Deng brothers, who built a five-story bluestone pavilion for him at the most dangerous part of the mountain fortress. No one was allowed to enter, and every time Guan Yu came, he would sit upright, stroking his beard with his left hand and holding the book with his right, reading by candlelight. That is how the name Chunqiu Pavilion came to be. However, Ye Zhi, a professor at Hubei University of Arts and Science, believes after studying the remaining stele and the Deng family genealogy that Chunqiu Village was actually built by the Deng family during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty to defend against bandits. One ancient village, two timelines—standing in front of the Chunqiu Pavilion site, I suddenly felt that the truth might be hidden between these two accounts: the village may have been built later, but the legend of Guan Yu reading the "Spring and Autumn Annals" here has long since grown into the texture of the stones. 🏯 Stone house cluster on the ridge: Walking on the spine of the "No. 1 Village in China" Chunqiu Village is the second-largest ancient mountain fortress in Asia, with over 150 stone houses spread along the ridge from south to north, surrounded by water on three sides and facing the mountain on one. I walked slowly along the ridge plank road; most of the stone houses only have walls left, with no roofs, but the traces of door frames, window openings, and window lattices remain. The narrowest part of the city wall only allows one person to pass sideways. Standing at the battlement and looking out, the Maoping River makes a huge "S" curve at the bottom of the valley. The layout of being surrounded by mountains and water really looks like a natural Tai Chi diagram. Inside the village, there are also ruins such as watchtowers, city gates, general's rooms, and "flying stones from the sky," with a story at every few steps. 🚡 Cable car and Via Ferrata: Two perspectives to see the ancient village I chose the cable car to go up the mountain, which costs 87 yuan for a round trip. It takes 15 minutes to slowly ascend, and the panoramic view of the entire Liyu Mountain ridge and Maoping River unfolds beneath your feet. If you are brave enough, you can experience the Via Ferrata rock climbing, which is 200 meters long with a vertical height of over 70 meters, taking anywhere from 40–100 minutes. When you are climbing against the cliff, the stone walls of Chunqiu Village are right above you. I chose the cable car, and my friend chose the Via Ferrata. When we met up after coming down the mountain, he said, "My legs were shaking so much I couldn't even take a steady photo." 📌 Practical information · Tested and verified 📍Address: Lupi Village, Donggong Town, Nanzhang County, Xiangyang City (navigate to "Chunqiu Village Scenic Area") 🚗Transportation: About 1.5 hours by car from Xiangyang, parking is 10 yuan/day; or take the tourist shuttle bus from the Xiangyang Tourist Distribution Center (departs every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday) 🕒Opening hours: 8:30 AM–5:30 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM) 🎫Admission ticket: General admission is about 65–72 yuan, half price for students/seniors aged 60+; round-trip cable car is 87 yuan, Via Ferrata is 54 yuan, one-way boat ride is about 15 minutes ⏳Recommended duration: 3–4 hours 🗺️ Route recommendation: Cable car up the mountain > Wangyue Terrace for sightseeing > Chunqiu Pavilion site (where Guan Yu read at night) > Guan Gong statue > Walk through the stone house cluster along the ridge plank road > Boat ride down the Maoping River > Ancient Mountain Fortress Culture Museum 🍜 What to eat at the foot of the mountain: There are many farmhouses opposite the scenic area. Nanzhang cured meat, firewood-cooked konjac tofu, and acorn noodles are local specialties. You can eat very well for about 50 yuan per person. Standing on the Chunqiu Pavilion, the wind rushes up from the Maoping River. When Guan Yu read the "Spring and Autumn Annals" here 1,800 years ago, he must have been looking at the same landscape. Whether the truth is real or not may not be that important—what matters is that this stone village has kept that posture for him until today. 🏯

Unlike short-term Three Gorges routes that last only three or four days, this 11-day/10-night Chongqing–Shanghai route connects the upper Yangtze canyons, middle-reach ancient cities, and lower-reach Jiangnan water towns into a complete scenic corridor. You eat and stay on the cruise for the entire trip, without the need to repeatedly pack luggage or change hotels, truly achieving a "lie-flat" travel experience. The itinerary pace is relaxed and balanced. The first half travels through the secret realms of the Three Gorges: set sail in the early morning from the mist-covered Chaotianmen Dock, and the cruise slowly enters Qutang Gorge to witness the magnificent scenery of Kuimen standing majestically on both banks. Traveling to Wu Gorge, Goddess Peak appears faintly in the sea of clouds, and the ink-wash landscape comes into view. When the cruise enters Xiling Gorge, the five-stage ship lock slowly opens and closes, allowing you to experience the magnificent momentum of a world-class water conservancy project up close. Six vertical landscape scenes unfold one by one, capturing the majestic natural scenery of the Yangtze River. Leaving the canyons, the cruise enters the Jianghan Plain. Jingzhou Ancient City carries the history of the Three Kingdoms; Wuhan's Yellow Crane Tower stands by the river, where you can climb up to overlook the rolling river water. Mount Lu in Jiujiang is shrouded in clouds and mist; Mount Jiuhua in Chizhou is filled with ancient temples; Nanjing, the ancient capital, has a long-standing charm; and Yangzhou's Slender West Lake features small bridges and flowing water. The journey transitions from high mountains and canyons to plains and water towns, with scenery layers progressing step by step. In leisure time, tourists can stay on the top open-air deck, lie on rattan lounge chairs, enjoy a cup of tea with the sunset, watch the orange-red river merge with the sky, and see migratory birds skimming across the water, creating a fully relaxed vacation atmosphere. The final leg sails downstream into the Huangpu River, docking at the Bund pier at night, where the skyscrapers of Lujiazui are brightly lit, and the international architectural complex reflects on the river, bringing the entire journey to a perfect conclusion. In terms of travel costs, the all-inclusive package at 15,999 CNY per person offers excellent value for money, including 10 nights in a river-view balcony room, three buffet meals throughout the trip, all shore attraction tickets, and tour guide services, with no hidden consumption, making it suitable for family trips and leisure vacations for middle-aged and elderly people. Regarding diet, we strictly abide by food safety regulations and the Yangtze River fishing ban policy. All aquatic products are selected from regular farmed ingredients; no wild Yangtze catches are used, and the menu contains no non-compliant promotions. Sichuan/Chongqing "Jianghu" cuisine, Hubei fish cake, and Jiangnan Huaiyang cuisine are served in rotation, with a balance of meat and vegetables, traceable ingredient sources, and standardized, hygienic cooking processes. This allows you to taste local specialties along the river while firmly adhering to the bottom line of compliant operations. The entire 11-day journey spans six provinces, from the mountain city of Chongqing to the metropolis of Shanghai, covering 2,400 kilometers of the Yangtze River waterway, including majestic canyons, historical ancient cities, Jiangnan water towns, and urban night views. The slow-paced cruise abandons rushed travel, turning the journey itself into scenery. During the day, go ashore to visit cultural relics; in the evening, quietly enjoy the river sunset on the deck; at night, fall asleep to the sound of the river. If you are planning a long-haul leisure trip of 10 days or more, this Yangtze River panoramic cruise route is absolutely an irreplaceable first choice.

Jingzhou hotel recommendation | An immersive, neo-Chinese style hotel — traveler post in Jingzhou

Jingzhou hotel recommendation | An immersive, neo-Chinese style hotel

Choosing the right hotel for your trip to Jingzhou really makes things worry-free and adds so much to the experience✨ This Anta Hotel is in a prime location, close to the ancient city and the high-speed railway station. I was on a self-driving tour and even went to the nearby Garden Expo Park. Staying here made getting around, sightseeing, and dining very convenient. The rooms and public areas are antique and charming, with an elegant and serene neo-Chinese style, full of thoughtful details. The biggest surprise was the hotel's public lounge; the atmosphere is incredible, and stepping inside feels like traveling through time. You don't need to go out looking for photo spots; every corner is photogenic, and you can take great pictures without needing extra lighting. The biggest plus was the butler service, where everything was clearly written out for me in great detail. The room includes complimentary fridge drinks, a self-service laundry room on the second floor, a wide variety of disposable amenities, and electric curtains. They clearly marked where to go for sightseeing and how long the drive would take. I didn't have to do any research myself. After a tiring journey, this level of attentiveness was truly healing. When traveling, finding a hotel that puts in this much effort really makes you feel incredibly happy. 📍Anta Hotel (Jingzhou Ancient City Wanda Plaza Branch)

Zhanghua Temple Travel Notes — traveler post in Jingzhou

Zhanghua Temple Travel Notes

Zhanghua Temple 📍Address: No. 34 Taishiyuan Road, Shashi District, Jingzhou City Located right in the Shashi urban area, it is a quiet retreat amidst the hustle and bustle. This temple is famous not only for being one of the three major Buddhist monasteries in Hubei, but more specifically, it was built on the site of the Zhanghua Terrace of King Ling of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period, which is also the legendary site of the "Slender Waist Palace." Construction of the temple began in the Yuan Dynasty, originally called Zhangtai Temple, and was later renamed Zhanghua Temple. During the Qing Dynasty, it received the imperial gift of the Tripitaka, and it was very popular with worshippers back then. Walking through the temple gate, the noise of the city is instantly shut out. Walking along the central axis, the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Mahavira Hall are lined up in sequence. The architecture carries a bit of the old imperial palace layout, with red walls and upturned eaves, looking very grand. In front of the Mahavira Hall are two old trees that you must see when you come here. One is a Chu plum tree, said to have been preserved from the Chu Dynasty, with a tree age of over 2,000 years. When it blooms in winter, the plum blossoms on the vigorous old branches are very charming. Next to it is an ancient ginkgo tree from the Tang Dynasty. Every late autumn, the whole tree turns golden, and when the leaves fall to the ground, it is very atmospheric. In the adjacent courtyard, there is also an ancient Chenxiang well, said to be a relic from the Chu Palace. Continuing your tour, you can see the Jade Buddha Hall and the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats. The Sutra Library houses the imperial scriptures gifted back then, as well as a jade Buddha gifted by Myanmar. You can climb the Ganlu Pagoda. Standing at the top of the pagoda, you can overlook the entire old city of Shashi. When the wind blows, the wind chimes on the corners of the pagoda ring, which is very peaceful. No admission ticket is required, you can get incense for free, and there are no mandatory purchases. After visiting the temple, it is a short walk to the Dasai Lane Food Street, where you can stop by to eat some local snacks. To be honest, if it is not the season for plum blossoms or ginkgo, the trees lack the vibrant flowers and yellow leaves, so it has a bit less visual impact. But what is rare here is that what you are stepping on is both the site of the Chu King's Palace and an ancient temple from the Yuan Dynasty. The history of the Chu region and the Zen spirit of Buddhism are layered on the same land. No need to rush, just walk slowly and soak in this sense of history; it is very nice.

Jingzhou Museum

The museum is relatively well-preserved, and the guide's explanations were incredibly vivid and engaging—it was fantastic! I especially remembered the only male wet-body exhibit in the country, which was remarkably well-preserved and all original pieces… hahaha. It was much bigger during the National Day holiday; I'd like to come again next time when it's less crowded…

Jingzhou Ancient City

Jingzhou is a famous city from the Three Kingdoms period. My child was very interested in the city after hearing about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, especially wanting to see Guan Yu. It is said that the Guan Yu Temple is the original site of Guan Yu's residence. The place inside is not big, but the incense is very strong. We even tried to use the Green Dragon Crescent Blade. We used all our strength but it didn't budge. It must weigh more than 82 jin (41 catties). It is a good place to bring children to learn about history.

King Chu's Mausoleum

Definitely worth a visit! Magnificent! The exhibition hall is designed in a dreamlike style, with 3D video displays that make you feel like you've traveled back in time! The park is nestled among lush greenery, and the environment is wonderful! It truly deserves its reputation as a southern chariot and horse formation site comparable to the Terracotta Army in Xi'an! Because it was the off-season, there were fewer people, and the experience was even better than at the Terracotta Army! A must-see for anyone who loves history and culture.

Jingzhou Fantawild Oriental Heritage

This hotel was a fantastic experience! From the moment we entered, the front desk staff were all smiles. Check-in was quick and attentive; they even gave the kids toys and upgraded our room for free. The room was spacious and bright, the bedding was soft and comfortable, and we slept soundly until morning. The cleanliness was impeccable, even the corners of the bathroom were spotless. The hotel's location is also very convenient, making it easy to get to attractions and shopping areas. Whether for business trips or family vacations, this is an excellent choice.

Former Residence of Zhang Juzheng

The main buildings of Zhang Juzheng's former residence include Taiyue Hall, Chunzhong Hall, Zhang Wenzhong Ancestral Hall, Pengri Tower, etc., and there are stone inscriptions of articles written by Zhang Juzheng. The former residence provides a detailed illustrated display of Zhang Juzheng's life and deeds, which is highly readable, informative, and highly praises Zhang Juzheng. It is a worthwhile attraction to visit in Jingzhou.

Guandi Temple

The Guandi Temple in Jingzhou was first built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, rebuilt during the Wanli period, and repaired and expanded during the Shunzhi and Yongzheng periods of the Qing Dynasty. It is considered one of the four major Guandi memorial sites in China, along with the Guandi Temple in Jiexiu, Shanxi; the Guanling Mausoleum in Dangyang, Hubei; and the Guanlin Temple in Luoyang, Henan. The temple now only contains the main hall and the Sanyi Hall; the Guanyin Shrine and other buildings mentioned at the entrance no longer exist. The temple lacks sufficient pictures and textual explanations, and has few ancient artifacts, resulting in a limited amount of information.

Binyang Tower

You need to buy tickets online two hours in advance to get a ¥3 discount if you buy them on-site. We went in the evening, and the sunset view from upstairs was beautiful, and the night view was also quite nice.

Jingzhou Ancient City Wall

Guan Yu Temple

Guan Gong is renowned internationally, so a visit to Jingzhou is a must. The 27 yuan ticket isn't expensive, but the tour doesn't offer much. The entire tour takes about half an hour, and with more careful observation, it should take no more than an hour. The content is still a bit limited, and I hope to expand it in the future. Also, Jingzhou is Guan Gong's hometown, and we recommend making such attractions free of charge to attract more tourists to Jingzhou.

Honghu Eco-Tourism Scenic Area

Overall, it was just average. The price-performance ratio wasn't particularly high. Perhaps due to the season and weather, the boat trip on the lake (I'm not sure of the name) took too long. The scenic area management lacked attention to detail. There was basically no concept of service. No one intervened when tourists smoked on the boat, posing a safety hazard. There was virtually no explanation or commentary, and no written materials were provided. The only redeeming quality was the environment. It would be suitable for an autumn stroll.
