The location of the hotel was amazing, just a 3-minute walk from Nagano Station, and there was a 7-Eleven store next door.
The hotel staff were really nice and helpful.
The hotel lacked a laundry room, but there is a big and very good coin laundry about 15 minutes walking distance from the hotel.
Although the hotel was okay in terms of cleanliness, it looked old and, in some areas, a little rough and outdated.
The room was small, but that’s not surprising for Japan. We managed with two people and two large suitcases in the room, you just have to be a bit creative.
In the end, for the price you pay for this hotel (at least what we paid), it was a steal.
The room and bathroom was clean and nice. We were driving but there were ample parking lots. We got the free welcome drinks, free ice cream, free chazuke and free morning coffee during our stay. We were able to see sunset from our room too. The public bath was clean too with all amenities provided, even with massage chairs. Totally enjoy our stay, the receptionist spoke good english too. very recommended.
The staff was very helpful and professional. Before our stay, I inquired about shipping our luggage to the airport, and as we checked in they had information for me for when I needed to bring my luggage down. Also, I didn't need to do any of the paperwork (as I did at Karaska Hotel in Tokyo). The staff took care of everything for me. All I had to do was pay for it.
The hotel is connected to the train station via the Midori market place. From the second floor of the hotel we accessed the Midori market area where we purchased a lof of our omiyage(gifts for friends). The train station had about 4 floors of stores attached to it. We had breakfast at the train station -- a small udon stand. The location was very good and I would definitely book here again. The train station has a pedestrian bridge on the second floor that connects to the Don Quixote across the street. 2 km away is the Zenkoji Temple, where there is a shopping street and a large Buddhist temple to visit.
Our room was cleaned every day and they were very conscientious and very careful. They left a note saying that any cups with liquids are left as is just in case. There was three of us sharing a room with two singles and an additional bed. The room was spacious even with three of us sharing. There was a little table with two chairs on the side.
Booked a room here for 1 day just to explore matsumoto. this hotel was a pretty good distance to walk to the tourist attraction such as the matsumoto castle and nawate shopping street. loved that they offered free icecream or ramen between 8:00-10:00 pm. If you ever check out and you still have time before your bus leaves, you can also ask front desk to keep your luggage so you can be luggage free exploring. they were super kind and understanding with all the requests we had.
Great Stay at Hotel Courtland, Matsumoto!
Just wanted to drop a quick review for Hotel Courtland in Matsumoto—what a pleasant find!
The location is absolutely fantastic. Seriously, it's about a 5-minute, worry-free walk from the station. This was a huge plus, especially since we had luggage; no need to struggle or look for a taxi. Adding to the value, the price at the time of booking was very cheap, making this a fantastic deal!
As for the hotel itself, I have to say, it's exceptionally clean. Like, super clean. It made our stay feel very comfortable and relaxing.
What really stood out was the amazing hospitality. We arrived after a 4-hour ride from Tokyo and were pretty frozen from the winter shock. The staff kindly offered us a free early check-in, which was incredibly thoughtful and exactly what we needed to warm up and refresh. It really saved the day!
We didn't get a chance to try the breakfast this time, but based on everything else, I imagine it's great too.
Highly recommend this hotel if you're ever in Matsumoto!
I stayed three nights in Nagano, and the hotel's location was super convenient. It was easy to catch buses for day trips to Togakushi Shrine and Hakuba Iwatake. The room was spacious enough, and the breakfast was excellent with local specialties. Plus, there were tons of dining options nearby.
Toyoko Inn is always my go to when travelling outside of Tokyo. Location is always fantastic, rooms are clean, beds comfortable and you get everything you need (including breakfast).
Highly surprised with thjs room! So spacious and well-equipped with amenities! Parking is also available although one has to walk abit as it is behind the hotel. There are 2 TV’s and 1 remote so will need to toggle left and right. Bed is good although pillow can be more firm in my own opinion.
With mountain view and waking up to sunrise, what a way to wake up. We didn’t have breakfast so we wouldn’t know about the variety. There’s a convenience store just a few blocks down.
Overall, we enjoyed out stay here in Hotel JAL - specifically this room :D
Extremely close to the station, with plenty of dining options nearby. The onsen is excellent, and they even offer free ice cream and a late-night snack. The room was a bit small. I'd definitely choose to stay here again next time I'm in Nagano.
I absolutely loved Karuizawa; it was truly the highlight of our trip. The hotel is very conveniently located, and both the setting and the service were exceptional. Basking in the warm late-summer sun, we savored the relaxed holiday atmosphere. There's also a Japanese restaurant called Atago downstairs, which I highly recommend – just remember to book in advance. I'd definitely choose to stay here again if I have the chance to visit Karuizawa in the future.

GGuest UserI am a solo traveler who stayed in the room with private open bath. I enjoyed my 2 nights stay. Hotel looks tired and old but it was all good . Btw, you have to use a key to open the door not access card.
I paid for my room with breakfast and dinner. I have a private dining space in a restaurant which I like it. Skip all queue and I dine at the same place for all meals. Dinner was great. Breakfast spread was wonderful too.
I tried the one hour jap massage and it was so good.
There isn’t anyone who can really speak English. The guests are mainly locals.
There is free shuttle to check in and check out.
Overall I give 9/10!!
MM38368****The hotel is nestled in a quiet forest. The Shinshu apple pastry at the hotel shop was surprisingly delicious. If you're planning to have dinner, you'll likely need to book it at the hotel, as the surrounding area is quite secluded, making it hard to find dining options without a car. The hotel's dinner is a semi-buffet, and the taste was just average.

BBryce van de LaarFrom the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there.
The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance.
- The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit.
- The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning.
- After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics.
- Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30.
- The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want.
- The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this.
- Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern).
We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.
CChenieeOne of the best hotels I’ve stayed in. We visited in early November 2025 during the autumn season, and the beautiful foliage added such a romantic touch to the surroundings.
I loved the modern interior, the comfortable bed, and the overall room layout. The hotel looks incredibly romantic at night too, especially with the reflections on the pond.
The outdoor onsen was a highlight. It felt serene at night, and the maple trees lit up in the evening made it absolutely scenic. The onsen is located in a separate building, so you do have to walk through the cold, but it wasn’t an issue as the hotel provides thicker robes. If I had to nitpick, the indoor slippers weren’t the most comfortable.
We drove during our stay, so getting to nearby attractions was easy. There’s a large supermarket and a pharmacy about 5–10 minutes away, which was very convenient — we didn’t even need to visit any convenience stores.
This hotel impressed me so much that it made me look up where else Hotel Indigo has branches in Japan!
AAdil AdelshinRoom a bit tired, need some update. Location is good enough, about 10 min walk from train station. Free bycicle rent, nice breakfast
Nice little city among mountains
NNuonuokafeiThe classic Karuizawa Resort Hotel, which has been passed down for more than 100 years, has been restored to its original state. It will welcome guests with a brand new look in 2024. There is a pick-up at the hotel's pick-up area at the south exit of Karuizawa Station. The car is parked a little inside and you have to look for it. There is a bus at 2:30 in the afternoon. If there is no bus, take a taxi directly to the hotel, which costs about RMB 60. The hotel's etiquette reception is impeccable. Every staff member is warm and friendly. The room is just the best time to live. It is brand new but no longer decorated. I booked a better room with a terrace than the basic room. I was given a corner room with large double-sided glass. The room is so beautiful. The terrace is quite small and I have never been out. The basic room of the hotel is also very large. There is no problem. Every room is comfortable to live in. It is recommended to include meals. Dinner is 16,500 yen plus 1,000 yen to upgrade the meat. The meat is tender and delicious. It is worth it! Every dish was delicious, the right temperature, the best quality. Breakfast was 5700 yen, not bad, but the quality was not as good as the breakfast in Nikko Jingu. The boiled egg was hard to open without an egg opener, the bacon was not crispy, and the toast was not toasted. I was a little disappointed, but the service was still perfect. The curtains in the room were very blackout, which was highly praised. There were many buses going to and from the station to go shopping at the outlets. It was easy to buy. There were all the big sports brands and the styles were new. In summary, I would stay here again if I went to Karuizawa.

GGuest UserSkiing in Karuizawa in December, good location, 10 minutes drive to the ski resort. The room size is moderate, but the biggest problem is that the weather is cold, the air conditioning and heating in the room are invalid, and the temperature in the room is as cold as outside.
There is no door password and room password on the morning of the check-in day, and you will reply only if you take the initiative to ask.
MMeowVanWhat an awesome experience! The hotel offered exemplary service before we even arrived. Due to special travel arrangements, we arrived late and the staff quick to arrange an in-room bento dinner for us before our arrival. When we got there, we were immediately blown away by the gorgeousness of the hotel.
Despite its age, everything was very clean and polished. I can see that great care had been taken to upkeep the hotel and it’s premises, which are extraordinarily beautiful. We couldn’t resist taking pictures even after check-out, and it took us an hour to finally reluctantly leave. Words cannot actually do the place justice, you must visit there yourself.
We were very impressed with how delicious the food was, and the attention to detail, including the placement of the food, the coordination of food color. My mouth is still watering as I recall how delicious it was. I had 10 helpings of their prime rib one day. Besides, I had a dietary restriction and the staff were really careful with that, to the extent of reminding me what dishes not to eat everyday at their breakfast and dinner buffet.
In addition to excellent food and service, the hotel went out of its way to be very eco-friendly. For every day that we did not need our room to be tidied, we earned points, which can be traded in for ice cream or other goodies.
Finally, the staff spoke perfect English. This is rare indeed, and it made everything so much easier and so much more enjoyable. Thanks for the experience!
